Dankzij moderne ontwerp software kunnen architec-

ten optimaal gebruik maken van de mogelijkheden

van bouwmaterialen. Beton, staal en glas worden

toegepast op een manier die 50 jaar geleden als

onverantwoord zou zijn betiteld.

With the aid of modern design-software, architects

can make optimal use of the possibilities of build-

ing materials. Concrete, steel and glass are being

applied in a way that 50 years ago would have been

deemed irresponsible.

Verkeersbrug / roadbridge (Nieuwegein)

• Het strakke eenvoudige beton van de verkeers-

brug in Nieuwegein.

• De vrijwel volledige glazen wand van het RABO

hoofdkantoor.

• P+R. Opvallend is de vorm van de parkeerga-

rage en de klimwand aan de buitenzijde. In de

P+R is een busstation en fietsenstalling opgeno-

men.

P+R Uithof / Park & Ride Uithof (Utrecht)

• Simple and austere use of concrete in the road

bridge at Nieuwegein.

• The almost fully glass walls of the RABO bank

head office

• Park & Ride. Striking features are the shape of

the parking and the climbing wall. At ground level

a bus station and bike parking are incorporated.

Naast de bestaande symfonie-

zaal die is ‘overgebleven’ uit

het oude muziekcentrum zijn in

TivoliVredenburg 4 nieuwe zalen

gerealiseerd, ieder met een eigen

karakter. De zalen zijn verbonden

via een ‘plein’ waardoor de indivi-

duele zalen één gebouw worden.

TivoliVredenburg has 5 venues, all designed by dif-

ferent architects. In addition to the existing symphony

venue from the ‘old’ Vredenburg 4 new venues are

developed, each with it own character. The venues

are connected through a ‘square’ which makes the

individual venues into one building.

The design is by Herman Hertzberger architects, Jo

Coenen, Thijs Asselbergs and NL Architects.

Een van de opvallende aspecten

aan het gebouw is het gebruik van

verschillende materialen. Hierdoor

krijgen de zalen een eigen karak-

ter. Voor de ‘openbare’ ruimtes

is vooral staal en beton gebruikt,

waarbij naast lichte grijze tinten

opvallende rode, oranje en blauwe

kleuren zijn gebruikt.

Striking aspect in the building

is the use of different materials.

This gives the different venues

their own character. In the ‘public

spaces’ predominantly steel and

concrete is used with light gray,

striking red orange and blue col-

ors.

indrukwekkend roestig / iMpressive rusty

Industrie heeft een stoer imago. Er wordt iets

gemaakt, en liefst iets groots.

De warmtekracht koppeling van Dok Architecten

voldoet helemaal aan dat beeld. De grote ‘roestige’

constructie tegen de blauwe winterlucht toont een

industrieel product dat niet met zich laat spotten.

Industrial activities have a tough image. Something

is being created, preferably something big.

The co-generation plant designed by Dok Architects

fulfills the image completely. The tough ‘rusty’ con-

struction against the blue winter sky shows an indus-

trial product that is not to be messed with.

vijf voor twaalf / five to twelve

Industrie aan einde van zijn gebruiksperi-

ode heeft vaak een melancholische sfeer.

Voor deze hallen is dat voorbij. Ze heb-

ben de sloop overleefd en wachten op een

nieuwe bestemming.

Industry at the end of its useful period has

often something melancholic. For these

halls it is well past that time. They survived

demolition and await a new destination.

De heftorens van de Prinses Beatrixsluis,

een typisch voorbeeld van het ‘Nieuwe

Bouwen’, zijn nog steeds in gebruik.

De oude suikerfabriek heeft een herbe-

stemming als expositieruimte.

In geval van hoog water kunnen de stoom-

machines van het Woudagemaal direct

bijspringen.

En soms is het gewoon nog even wachte

op restauratie.

The lifting towers of the Princess Beatrix

locks are a typical example of the ‘Interna-

tional Style’, and are still in use today.

The old sugar factory is now used for ex-

positions.

In case of high water the steam engines of

the Wouda pumping station can spring into

action in no-time.

And sometimes you have to wait a little lon-

ger for restoration to start.

Sanatorium Zonnestraal (‘Sunbeam’) was designed

Sanatorium Zonnestraal is ontworpen door architect

Jan Duiker, samen met Bernard Bijvoet en Jan Gerko

Wiebenga en is geopend in de periode 1928-1931.

Ondanks het feit dat het gebouw bijna een eeuw oud

is oogt het nog steeds strak en modern. Het is een

Zonnestraal (Hilversum)

by architects Jan Duiker, Bijvoet and Wiebenga en opened in

1928-1931.

Despite the fact that the building is almost a century old it still

looks modern. It is one of the first designs in The Netherlands

with the motorized transport as one of the starting points.

Zonnestraal is een voorbeeld van

de ‘Nieuwe Bouwen’ stijl. De uit-

voering is in beton, met stalen

raamsponningen en enkel glas.

Duiker heeft zijn standaardkleuren

gebruikt: wit, zwart en een speci-

fieke kleur lichtblauw (“Duiker-

blauw”).

De restauratie werd uitgevoerd

door Hubert-Jan Henket en

Wessel de Jonge. Het hoofdge-

bouw is in de oude glorie hersteld.

Zonnestraal is an example of the

‘International style’. The building

is constructed in concrete, steel

and glass. Duiker used his stan-

dard colors: white, black and a

typical blue color (‘Duiker blue’).

Restoration was carried out by

Hubert-Jan Henket en Wessel de

Jonge. The main building is now

restored in its former glory.

gevangen historie / Captivating history

Wolvenplein werd geopend in 1856. Tot de sluiting in 2014 was het de

oudste nog in gebruik zijnde gevangenis in Nederland.

Momenteel worden door diverse organisaties plannen gemaakt voor

het toekomstig gebruik van dit monument.

Simon Vinkenoog en Herman

Brood verbleven hier wegens bezit

van drugs.

Dutch poet Simon Vinkenoog en

musician Herman Brood stayed

here because of drugs possession.

Wolvenplein opened 1856. Until the closure in 2014

is was the oldest prison in use in The Netherlands.

Listed as a monument, plans are being made for the

future use of this former prison.

Los van de individuele gebou-

wen hebben steden een eigen

sfeer. Een sfeer die wordt bepaald

door de combinatie van architec-

tuur, weer en tijdstip van de dag.

Vergelijk bv. de dynamiek en het

gevoel van haast in de foto van de

Erasmusbrug (rechterpagina) met

de rust en het gebrek aan haast in

de andere foto’s.

Cities have their own atmosphere,

determined by architecture,

weather and time of day. Compare

eg. the dynamics and sense of ur-

gency in the Erasmusbrug image

(right page) with the tranquility

and the lack of urgency in the oth-

er images.

Als je denkt aan de Bario Alto in Lissabon, denk je aan oude vervallen

gebouwen. Maar of de gebouwen oud of minder oud zijn, één ding heb-

ben ze vaak gemeen: de opvallende soms felle kleuren die in combina-

tie met een strakblauwe lucht tot een verrassende compositie leiden.

Als contrast de 3 appartementen complexen aan de Boompjes in

Rotterdam, waar het stoere van de stad vanaf straalt.

Think of the Bario Alto in Lisbon and old derelict

buildings come to mind. Whether the buildings are

old or less old, they often have one thing in common:

striking colors. Combined with the blue sky it leads

to a surprising composition. Compare that with the

3 apartment buildings at Boompjes which show the

toughness of the city.

“When you photograph people in color, you pho-

tograph their clothes. But when you photograph

people in black and white, you photograph their

souls!” - Ted Grant

Bovenstaande quote van de Canadese fotograaf

Ted Grant geldt niet alleen voor portretten. In deze

foto domineert de moderne stalen pyloon van de

Erasmusbrug de oude architectuur veel meer dan in

kleur, waar de kleuren het contrast zouden verzach-

ten.

The quote at the top of this paragraph from the Ca-

nadian photographer Ted Grant is not only true for

portrait photography. In this image the modern steel

pylon of the Erasmus bridge is far more dominant

over the old architecture than in a color image where

colors would soften the contrast.

Wanneer je op het Noordereiland loopt en niet al te ver voor je uitkijkt

waan je je in de 19e eeuw. Kijk iets verder en de moderne tijd dringt

zich op. Soms opvallend, soms subtiel.

Ondertussen is het eerste blok gesloopt om plaats te maken voor

moderne nieuwbouw, dus hoe lang dit nog resteert...

Walk at Noordereiland without looking too far ahead and you could think you

are in 19th century Rotterdam. Look ahead a bit further and modern times are

closing in. Sometimes spectacular, sometimes subtle.

The first housing block has been demolished to make room for modern housing,

so for how long this will be left....

Typische Hollandse landschappen: vlak,

saai en leeg. De werkelijkheid is anders.

Alhoewel vlak in een groot deel van het

land, saai en leeg is voor de goede kijker

allesbehalve waar.

A typical Dutch landscape is flat, empty and

boring. The truth is different. Although the

landscape is undeniable flat in most of the

country, boring and empty is for the careful

observer not in the least true.

Voor mij als fotograaf is de herfst

als een snoepwinkel met een over-

daad aan keus. De overvloed aan

prachtige kleuren en het warme

licht van een Indian summer

maken fotograferen in de herfst

(meestal) tot een waar genot.

For me as a photographer autumn

is like a candy shop with too much

choice. The abundance of colors

and the warm light of an Indian

summer (usually) make it a joy to

be a photographer.

Indian summer is een begrip dat

vooral wordt geassocieerd met

de Noord-Amerikaanse herfst.

De uitbundige rode kleuren van

de esdoorn in bovenstaande foto

spreken voor zich. Echter, ook

in Europa kun je genieten van

de warme kleuren van de herfst,

zoals in de Franse Elzas.

Indian summer is most often as-

sociated with North American

Autumn. The bright colors of the

Maple above speak for the them-

selves. But the colors of the Indian

summer can also be found in Eu-

rope eg. in the French Alsace.

In noord Finland zijn de winterdagen kort is de lucht-

vochtigheid zo laag dat de sneeuw als een beeld-

houwwerk van Koning Winter om de bomen hangt.

Winter in Scandinavia. From the uninviting icy plains

of Norway to the deceptively friendly looking snow of

northern Finland.

In northern Finland winter days are short and the hu-

midity is so low that snow clings to a tree as a sculpture

from Old Man Winter himself.

Temperaturen diep onder nul en een snijdende noordenwind zijn niet

altijd noodzakelijk om een fraai winterbeeld op te leveren.

De foto’s op deze pagina’s zijn in een tijdsbestek van 1 uur gemaakt

na een koude vochtige nacht. Met de zon erbij was het geheel tegen

de lunch weer weg.

The images on these pages were taken within 1 hour

after a cold and damp night. When the sun came out
