The validi ty of the Bible and Christian fai th are my teaching and preachingthemes r igh t now. One of the great proofs of scr ipture i s the l iving miraclestha t we can see eve ry time Christ fu l f i l l ed an Old Testament prophecy. Thereare hundreds of them. I started compiling a complete l i s t of the propheciedi tems and t he i r ful f i l lments in Chinese. Also, each fu l f i l lment i s ra t ed on a9-point scale of credibil i ty. Another great thr i l l was the discovery of 14 typesof evidence t h a t demand Ch ris t's r ea l resur rec t ion . Thank God for the substanceo f hope .My BA degree was in pastoral care not carpen try, b ut I spent a week remaking aportable bapt is t ry . I t s t i l l leaks a lo t , but I 'm s t i l l trying and hoping.Joyce is doing better than I . Besides taking care of Sandy, she's busy keepinghouse, enter ta ining guests , p lanning packing , making clothes , baptismal robes, choir capes and bapt is t ry curtains. (I th in k h er mother se t a good example.)Mong Kok church star ted a fellowship on February f i rs t . The Christians are fullyin charge. They want to learn how to express themselves concerning Christ andhow to handle more responsib i l i t ie s since we are leaving.Chinese New Year i s always exci t ing and fun with homemade goodies. But since iti s shrouded in superst i t ions , it i s also a big religious holiday? so on New Year'sday, I visi ted the largest temple. I was the only nonChinese among thousands ofpeople in the courtyard. What surprised me most was not the r i tua l s , but theatmosphere: no joy, no adorat ion, no praise j us t suffocat ing tenseness.

Also, I recent ly bought a Chinese-English copy of "Quotations f rom ChairmanMao." After reading this and visi t ing the temple, I more greatly admire Christ.I was raised in church, and I often took God's message for g ranted, but now I saywith r ea l meaning, "No man ever spoke l ike Jesus! No man e v er 'l iv e d l ik e Chris t IA new Mandarin-speaking church will s tar t soon, the Lord willing. Mr. Lau, apreacher and co'-worker feels a burden to more fully express himself in this way.We desi re your prayers on h i s behal f .Don & Raque l Major stayed with us on t h e i r way to Indonesia as new miss ionar ies .We enjoyed the r ich sp i r i t ua l sharing with close friends in Christ .My parents, Mr. &Mrs. Carl Anderson, plan to be here for the f i rs t half of Maya t the end of a 3-month mission t r ip , thanks to the kindness of Pantano Church ofChri s t . We are looking forward to th e ir v is it !

    Recent GuestsWe enjoyed a v i s i t and gospel conce r t from th e R ostv it twins t h i s month. Yes

    t e rday , we had a br i e f v i s i t with my fa the r , who stopped fo r 22 hours on h is way toteach and preach in India . Joyce sa id , " I t was to o shor t . I f e l t l ike I didn ' tget to say everything I wanted to . ""Maybe," I said, "But I thought it was great . Our conversat ion was the bestcompact seminar ' in prac t i ca l theology tha t I 've had in ages."

Dad, Mom and Grandma Anderson wi l l a l l be with us fo r tw o weeks before we l eaveHong Kong.

Sn SMandarinWhen he had lunch with Mr . Lau and h is fami ly , th e l a s t th ing he sa id was,

"Please ask the American Chris t ians to pray fo r o ur work ."Mr. Lau i s a Mandar in-speaking preacher who preaches r egu la r ly fo r us . On h is

    own i n i t i a t i v e he p lans to s t a r t a Mandarin se rv ice in h is home soon.Although Cantonese i s the loca l d i a l ec t , Mandarin i s the na t iona l language of

China; so many people are a t t r a c t ed to Mandarin meet ings , and some p eo ple o nly speakMandarin. Such people are never re al ly a t home in a Cantonese congre ta t ion . Soth i s group 's needs should be m et, as Mr. Lau hopes to do.

Please pray tha t God wi l l give the Laus wisdom and charac te r equal to thechallenge they have accepted , and tha t God in His mercy wi l l b less them as they plantthe Word .

    Also pray fo r the Mong Kok fe l lowship group s t a r t ed th e f i r s t of February . Ibel ieve God's hand i s molding them, but it has meant some t es t ing . Pray tha t theym ight be kep t from the ev i l one and t h a t they might grow to f u l l matur i ty in Chr i s t .

Dear Chr i s t i an Family,I t cou ld o nly happen in America. In near ly th ree years in Hong Kong, we nevercontracted any of the d is ea se s a s so ci at ed with foreign count r ie s , but a f t e r onlya few days back in the Sta tes , I had a l l the symptoms o f d yse nte ry ; vomitingand d ia rrh ea . F or tu na te ly , it was sho r t - l i ved .Our l a s t few weeks in Hong Kong were pre t ty hec t ic with packing, f inishing upour par t in the church work and doing f ina l s igh t - see ing w ith our fam ily . I 'maf ra id some th ings tha t should have been done didn ' t get done. I almost believethat moving one's home across i nt er na ti on a l l in e s i s the supreme t es t of C hristia n p atie nc e and charac t e r . There were governmen t re l ease and ent ry papers ,I .R .S . c lea rance papers , sh ipp ing company dead l ine s and con t rac t s , i temizedcustom tax l i s t s , plane t i cke t s , and f igu r ing out what to do with the thousandsof things we couldn ' t take with us.

    In con t r a s t , c ro ss in g th e i n t e rn a t i ona l ba r r i e r of dea th should be apleasure as long as our "visas" are in order .Our most moving and encouraging exper ience in Hong Kong was a su rp r i se fa rewel lpar ty by the Chinese Christ ians and fr ien ds of the church. We'll remember the i rges ture of love fo r a long t ime. I fee l th a t the p ar ty was also a gen t l e rebukefrom my S av io r, s ay in g, "Oh, Gary of l i t t l e fa i th , why did you doubt My power int h e i r l i v e s ? "Even a t the a i rpor t , nearly 30 Chris t ians came to say "Good-bye" the Sunday thatwe l e f t . Fina l ly , we had to urge them to go back to church . We had a comfortable 15^2 hour f l igh t to Oakland v ia Anchorage. Upon ar r iv ing , we had lunch withf r iends and family , and then a t tended the evening se rv i ce a t Rinconada Hil l sChr i s t i an Church (RHCC). Fina l ly , we got to bed (3 6 hours a f t e r we got up) a tmy s i s t e r ' s home. Rod and Linda Peterson.I renewed my d r ive r ' s l icense without a mishap. I haven' t even forgotten todrive on the r igh t side of the road. But I'll admit th at c ul tu re shock caughtus o f f guard. Everyth ing about America shocked us a t f i r s t , bu t now it has a l lfa l l en in to p lace as if we never left.We a t t ended 18 mee t ing s , speak ing a t 13 o f them and t r ave l ed over 50 0 mi le sdur ing our two weeks in C a lif or nia . But ju st a fte r we brought it up here , it got bent up in anaccident ; so it's out of commission for a few days.Today a t th e b ar ber shop, I overheard tw o o ld fe llow s d is co v er t h a t they hadbeen f r i ends way back be fo re 1941. Over the year s , f a te pa r t ed t he i r ways un t i lnow they didn ' t recognize each other . Dear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d s ,(June 25th) I ' d bet ter s t a r t this l e t t e r now or I ' l l forget a l l t h a t ' s happened. Remember, t h i s l e t t e r i s bi-month ly whil e we're on furlough.We planned to spend the f i r s t week in June with Dad and Mom Wymore in Oregon.They had given us their second car to use this year, but i t was h i t the day afterwe got there. So i t spent eight days and $390.00 in the repair shop.Joyce, however had to start summer school in Los Angeles before the car couldbe fixed! I t seemed best to l e t Joyce fly down and stay at my Uncle Jim's home

    u n t i l I drove down. J oy ce , b eing a f a i t h f u l s tu de nt, c alle d the school as soona s s h e arrived.

    What summer school? Most o f the c l a s s e s s he p la nn ed to take had beencancelled. Now, she c a n ' t possibly get her BA t h i s year. After weighing thepossibi l i t ies, she flew r ight back so that we could be with Dad Wymore throughhis hernia surgery ( a l l ' s well). Unfortunately, Oregon's rye grass kept me sneezi n g most o f t h e t i m e .

    June 18th we l e f t f o r L.A. On our way, we spoke a t Green Valley C h r i s t i a nC h u r c h i n San J o s e a n d v i s i t e d w i t h f r i e n d s i n E l R i o .

    (July 27th) Since I would be going to school in Pasadena, we thought i t bestfor Joyce to attend some college in Pasadena rather than commuting 35 miles toPacific Christian College , but five days of house-hunting in summer's heat mademe wonder if t h i s was t h e L o r d 's w i l l . Then, we found a n i c e apar tment c l o s e t oPasadena City College and F u l l e r Theological Seminary.

    Our new home address i s a t the bottom of t h i s l e t t e r . As soon as we'd rented,our car was h it again from th e rear. So back to the shop just 20 days after th el a s t accident. I'm glad we're not commuting! Insurance covered both accidents.

July 5th we went to Denver for the North American Christ ian Convention andthen on to Minneapolis and a few, days with my grandparents in Wisconsin where wespoke. From there, we went to speak in Amherst and Bartley, Nebraska, where Joyce'sr e l a t i v e s were having t h e i r annual reunion, and we were back home via Denver onJuly 20th. We picked our car up from the shop and spent Some time with Chinesef r i e n d s from o u r church i n Hong Kong.

Most recently, we spoke at Westminister Christian Church in L.A. Before wes t a r t school in September, we'l l be in Arizona for a week of camp and two churches, and then sharing in El Rio, Californ ia for a weekend.

    Visiting our relat ives was a s p i r i t u a l blessing and a lesson. We saw thatthose which we re founded on Chris t ian p r i n c i p l e s h a l f a century ago have reproducedthat l ight many times over through their descendants in many areas of society andthe w o r l d .

P.S. from SandyIt sure Is good to be home and get the same bed every night. I was just beginning to get tired of all that variety. Trouble is, Mom and Dad are the only

ones to play with, and I need to teach them how before they're much good.

We noticed that some people read the "P. S. from 3an(^" f i rs t , and that somedon' t even read th^ res t . So we thought it v/as time the tables were turned.MAO'S DEATH - OPEN DOOR?Recently a few people asked me i f Ohairman I'lao's death might lead to great changesin China. Almost four years ago I quoted one observer as saying 'political overthrowat his death is a serious possibility' (Ja. , 73 newsletter). Since then, I havebeen praying that that change would coine f/iithin three to five years. i).llions ofother believers have been praying also that China's doors would open to "tiie gospel.I'fore than ever before, I be3j.eve that opening is close at hand. Here's why.

1 )1 don't belisve that our Heavenly Father in His mercywill neglect this generat io n o f mainland Chinese who have n ev er h ea rd th e g osp el.

    2) God iS/by His promises, not slow to ansiier the persistent, urgent prayers of hispeople .

    3) God is alreacfy raising yp an aru^r of dedicated Chinese believers throughout theworld. Just today, a missionaiy from the Philippines told me that Chinese andKoreans are the only two Asian groups that are really turning to the Lord right now.I t is hard to doLument, but I believe that there may be more Chinese-speaking believers throughout thn world today than ever before in human history. From themmust r i s e th e la bo re rs t o work i n China-U) cSince the early 1960s, l-lao's regime has been fallinr from favor with the massesof mainland Chinese. The re:;ime wants perpetual revolution, but the people wanta quiet productive life where they can raise thfir faniilies. I'lao's id-fe tried touse the Cultural Revolution to break this resistance. Manj'- good, just citizensdied needlessly. They becajiie martyrs for a just cause. Through i t all. Chow En Laiwho was sensitive to the people' s needs kept friction do>ni, but i^hen he diedtensions amazing^ly rose to the surface agciinst i^iao.^) Ilao's government has never been financially strong. These last great earth-ouakes may have put a great strain on the strength of his government. Will theybe ^ le to feed and' clothe those that were -made homeless? li* not, v jil l they be ableto resist the impatient demands of hungry people who are now better educated?Chinese can see that throughout the free world peoples rush to the needs of otheroeoples caught in disasters. from Gary and Joyce page 26) Earthquakes are a bad omen. To the old Chinese mind, great earthquakes foretel l

At l e a s t one and maybe s ev er al o f China 's grea t dynast iescollapsed fo llowing earthquakes . Do old Chinese today remember and believe thesesigns? I f so, then the people are notanxious to support a government tha t even heaven opposes.Today's China needs and irdght accept a Christian leader like i ts founding father.Sun Yat Sen who wi l l speak fo r the deep sp i r i tua l needs of the people. More thaneve r b ef or e our eyes should be focused on God's act ion in China, Itore th an ev erbefore we ought to dedicate ourselves to the evangelizat ion of these people inprayer and personal committment.l^fen and women must dedicate themselves to Chinese evangelism. As a whole, the" Chr i s t i a n^hu i ^ ^ ar^^ se r iWsly lacking in th i s area. In August.we s^nt 90l e t te rs to churches in the Los Angeles area to find out how much in teres t therewas in star t ing a Chinese church in Los Angeles county. SadHy, to date, we havenot heard of one single Chinese-American Chris t ian desp i te the fact th at nearly100,000 Chinese l ive in the L,A. area. Are we real ly concerned about reachingth e unr eached?

Abou t Ou r s e l v e sBefore we l e f t Hong Kong, we sorted out our belongings and decided to ship onlythose things we essentially needed. They were to arrive June 7th, in Los Angeles.Aft er s ever al l e t t e r s , extra money and the help of friends, they f inally arrivedin late August in Seattle! The V^ymores arran,.;ed to get them as far as San Jose, where we picked them up. V7e sure were glad fo r that .Recent and Tentat ive spealcing dates are as fol lows:

THE WHOLE STORY"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son."Oh, what love. Half of the world lived under the shadow of Greek culture and

Roman troops when Jesus came. He couldn't have come at a better time for them.got Qod loved the whole world, and the other half lived under the shadow of thegreat Han Dynasty of China. Jesus couldn't have come at a better time for them, either. Itwasindeed "the fulness of time". Yet, you haven't heard this Christmas story before.Jewish traders had established communities in China at least 700 years before Christ.Since these communities had copies of the Old Testament, they managed to keep up their hope

in the coming King.jhen "After his birth, astrologers from the eastarrived in Jerusa:lem, asking, 'Whereis the child who is born to be king of the Jews? We observed the rising of his star, and we havecome to pay him homage.'" (N.E.B.)Near that time, an astrologer reportedly disappeared from China and was gone for a longtime. Was he one of the astrologers who came to pay homage to the newborn king? Had he heardthe Jews tell of their hope and seen the prophecies of his star? God apparently didn't forget theChinese and that half of the world. He sent them a star. And, these astrologers at least didn'tforget to worship God, They brought gifts to his son. But, have weforgotten them for whom Jesus came? While Paul wentwest to the Greeks and the Ethiopian eunuch went south to the blacks, the apostle Thomas went east. He planted churches in Syria, Persia, India and . . . . did he reachChina: History doesn't say, but from earliest times, crosses appeared on a few Chinese tombs.Throughout the centuries, the church in China lived. Sometimes it grew to hundreds ofthousands. At other times it disappeared from view. Those oriental Christians were persecutedby national Chinese pride, even as the Western Christians were persecuted by Catholic Rome'sspiritual pride. But they survived even to this day."For God so loved the world . . .," the whole world. Let's remember that the wholeChristmas story was for the whole world,

WHO IS GOD CALLING TO MISSIONS TODAY?"Facing^the Divine Command" is a sermon that helps answer that question. It is theserhion that I've preached more than any other. If you care about theworld, take time to read it . It's free to anyonewho writesand asks for it.

    Q

    - ' f " .

"We wish you a very happy Christmas"

A t ra ve le r w ent to a well to draw water, but th ebuilders of the well warned him, "Draw as much water asyou can, but remember that you are expected to also drawwater for those who sent you, and to help deepen the wells o t h a t m o r e w a t e r w i l l flo w in . "

This parable tells something about the School of WorldMissions, where I'm studying here in Pasadena. Studentscome not only to get for themselves, but to give and share;so they are called "research associates" instead of students.Really, though, I 'm learning a lot more from themthan they are learning from me. At 25 years of age, I amthe second youngest of the nearly 100 research associates

    here. The average age is 41. These career missionariesand m a t u r e c h u r c h l e o d e r s c a m e from o v e r 30 c o u n t r i e ssuch OS Iceland, Sweden, France, Greece, Uganda,Nigeria, India, China, Viet Nam, Cuba, Ecuador an d SriL a n k a .

They have averaged sixteen years experience. Theyare radio broadcasters, TV producers, college presidents.Notional evangelists, Bible translators and preachers. They have faced witch doctors, head-hunters, kings, wars and church problems. Idi Amin tried toassassinate one associate before he left Africa, but killed a guest at his home instead. Another associatewas the third most wanted Christian by South African rebels, but ^1 was recently assassinated, and ^2 just disappeared.

So why do they leave wives, children and friends to come here? They come to learn "missiology"which is the science of cross-cultural communication of the Christian faith. The school has one goal:Seeing God's church grow.. Whatever hinders people from being saved is challenged. Like Christiandoctors, we must learn to analyze, diagnose and prescribe solutions to the hindrances, trusting Godf o r t he r es ul ts .

It's very practical. Every "associate" is expected to ably reproduce his Christian faith in otherparts of the world. I believe that this School ofWorld Missions is doing one of the best jobs at helpingpeople learn how to do that.MORE THAN TRIPLED it's size in five years! That's the story of the Mong Kok Church of Christ, I'vejust finished a fl5 page analysis of the church as well as faith-promise projections for the future. It'savailable to anyone who will send me $1 to cover copy costs. Just ask for, "An Accurate Picture ofth e Mong Kok Church of Christ."We need your prayers. 1) That we will use wisely the funds that God has entrusted to us. 2) Thatthis school year will be as profitable for the Kingdom as possible. 3) Above all, China needs theGospel. Dr. McGavron said that he regularly prays that 1,000 Christian workers, no matter whatcountry they are now in, would take the time to learn Chinese, so that they will be ready when thedoor opens.

    Best Wishes, ^
