ABOUT OURSELVESServing the Lord in mission work has been in our thoughts and prayers for many years.

Even before we were married we discussed our mutual desire to, someday, go to serve on amission field. Hong Kong, in particular, has always been close to our hearts. We are bothgraduates of St. Louis Christian College. Dwain, 28 years old, has a B.S. in Sacred Literature and Becky, 27 years old, has a B.S. in Christian .Missions. We have been married 6years and have 2 children. Sara is 4 years old and Mark is li/, years old. For the past fouryears we have lived in Cape Girardeau, Missouri where we have attended the New l esta-ment Christian Church. We bring with us a variety of experiences which we feel will behelpful in our work as missionaries. Dwain has preached, worked as a counselor oftroubled youth, taught Bible studies, been a deacon for the past two years and also thechurch treasurer for that same period of time. Becky has traveled in a singing group, sung as a soloist and in church choirs and been a leader in the local ladies group. Wehave both been youth sponsors and taught in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School andchurch camps. Our desire is to make a lifetime commitment to missions.

ABOUT HOBGKQING

Hong Kong is a British Colony with a population of over 5 million, 98% of whomare Chinese. The whole colony covers an area of less than 400 square miles. This isabout the size of an average county in the mid-west. Recently the government of HongKong estimated that the population was growing at a rate of 800 new people per day.

I'he principal religion of the people of Hong Kong is Buddhism. Fewer than 4%of the people are non-Catholic believers in Christ. In the world over 1,000 Chinese dieevery hour without Christ. Yet there are probably fewer Christian workers per capitaamong the Chinese than any other race on earth.

Missionaries from the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ have been workingin Hong Kong since 1963. Today in Hong Kong there are only 8 missionary couples.(That is one couple to every 625,000 people.) There are three churches, two churchplanting projects, two preaching points, one kindergarten, one workers lounge and anevening Bible college with 12 students. There are fewer than 250 believers attendingthese congregations.

OUR GOALS

We are hoping to have our support raised so we can leave for Hong Kong in early.August 1981. When we get there we will be working under the guidance of Gary andJoyce Anderson for the first term. This is to help us learn the culture and customs as wellas the successful methods of evangelism faster. Gary and Joyce have been in Hong Kongfor seven years and since Gary is Becky's cousin there is already a close tie between us.

During our first term of 3 years we plan to learn the language, customs, and culture of the Chinese people. Learning to speak, read and write the language will taketwo years of full time language school. We also hope to evaluate what is currently beingdone in Hong Kong in light of our own talents and then determine where in HongKong and with what group of Chinese people we will begin a church planting work ofour own. While we are in language school we plan to serve with the work that is alreadygoing on in any way possible. This will be in English at first. Then, as we learn thelanguage, in Chinese.

Page 3: Anderson Dwain Becky 1981 HongKong

Our long range goal is to establish indigenous congregations and to train the Chinese Christians to evangelize their own people. We also want to train workers to be ableto go into China when this door opens up. We would very much like to go into Chinaourselves if God opens this door to-us.

OUR NEEDS

PRAYER Please pray with us for:boldness to preach (Eph. 6:19-20)the opportunity to preach (Col. 4:3)the right words to say (Col. 4:4)safety in proclaming Christ (II Thess. 3:1-2)

From Mrs, Rebecca And^son

In answer to the question - "What influenced me to become a missionary"?

I would have to say a great many factors were influencial in

my decision to become a missionary. From the time I was a young

child my parents home was always open to missionaries visiting on

furlough. I especially remember them having Bernel and Joan Getter,

missionaries in India, in our home on several occassions. parents

were (and are) missions minded people who corresponded with mission

aries and kept up with their activities thru newsletters. They were

cheerful and willing contributors to various missions programs.

The churches I grew up in, the Church of Christ in Forest Lake,

Minnesota, the Pantano Church of Christ in Tucson, Arizona and the

1st Christian Church in Florissant, Missouri were congregations

where evangelism, both at home and cross-culturally, was preached

and taught and the people backed up their words with doing and

giving.

From before the time I became a Christian I knew I wanted to go

to Bible College. After I became a Christian I became increasingly

under the conviction that my whole life was a stewardship before God,

In other words, I knew I had a responsibility to God to use the talents

and abilities He had given me to His honor and glory, I knew that

part of this responsibility included a sound Bible education - more

than I could get thru Sunday School and regular Sunday and Wen. night

services. From that time until now I have tried my best to seek out

God's v/ill and do it, I have no dougt that God intends for Christians

to share the Good News of redemption thru His son Jesus Christ to

all people everywhere. I have no doubt that my part of this sharing]

includes a lifetime commitment to evangelism among the Chinese.

Page 14: Anderson Dwain Becky 1981 HongKong

From Mrs. Rebecca Anderson (continued)

In answer to the question - "What_dp^_,.I hope to accomplish on the

Mission field"?

^ 6

I want to see souls won for Christ. I want to see Chinese people

)ecoming Christians. I want to see self-supporting congregations

established. I want to see the Gospel imparted to "faithful men" and

they , in turn, imparting it to "faithful men". I want to see

Chinese Christians becoming preachers and teachers and evangelists

and missionaries to other Chinese so feat the body of Christ might

be built up.

If you have heard our slide presentation, you most likely also heardus tell you that every hour of every day, l.QOQ Chinese people in theworld die without Christ! Almost with every breath you take as you readthis, another soul is lost for eternity. We can not accept this newslightlyl If you are a Christian today, it is because someone shared thegospel with you. As the body of Christ we have a great unfinished taskto perform. Cut of obedience to God and love for lost souls, we need tobe telling the world that Jesus savesl Of the 5 million Chinese peoplein Hong Kong fewer than 150,000 are non-Catholic believers in Christ,Please consider these facts soberly and prayerfully. Ask for God'sleading in what He would have you to do to help meet the Asian Challenge,

Hong Kong: Such A Need !There is such a great need for the gospel of Christ in the lives

of the people of Hong Kong. In one of the New Territories villageschildren in a Sunday school class were asked to name something goodthey could do. Two or three of the boys replied instantly, "Steal something" I This shocks us but to them stealing wasn't considered wrong. It was a way to get ahead in the world. Most of the nice houses intheir village were bought with dishonest profits.

In that same village, known for its robberies, black mail andmurder, a score of able bodied men spend the majority of their timedrinking and gambling. Awhile ago a two year old boy drowned in thefield watering hole while his father sat drinking and gambling only acouple hundred yards away. When the father found out, he went out tothe field and cried like a baby, but no one comforted him. In fact, there is no comfort for him outside of Christ.

Our PlansFor the past seven months we have been working toward an August

departure for Hong Kong to begin our work there. We have been warmlyrecieved in each of the 30 congregations where we've shared our hopesand plans. As of this date only one thing hinders us from leaving inAugust - committed monthly support.

Our visas for residence in Hong Kong were approved in May of thisyear. Also, we praise God, all of the money for our one time expenseshas been recieved. In both of these cases we see God at work answeringour prayers. The monthly support commitments, however, stand at alittlele^ss than half of what we need to leave for the field.

Our budget actually calls for $2415.00 per month. A few month^vago we made the decision to go to Hong Kong when we have $1800.00month committed to our work by churches and individuals. Today we$836.00 per month committed. ~ ^

At this point in our work, then, commitments of support are mostimportant to us. We will leave for Hong Kong .just as soon as the

necessary commitments have been recievedl Please pray with us forthis support.

Continuing To WorkBecause we do not have all of our support at this time, we are

continuing to present our plans and needs to the churches. Right nowwe are scheduling speaking dates thru^Hoveraber. We still have severaldates open, so if we have not been to your congregation and you'd likefor us to come, we'd be glad to do so. We will be available for morning, evening, or all day programs. Also, we'll be glad to come to rallies, retreats, or other special programs. We may be contacted by phone at(31^) 33^-1995» or by mail thru our forwarding agents.

CommitmentsMany times people feel that since they are unable to make a large

commitment, they shouldn't make any at all. Even a small commitmentthat is continued faithfully and prayerfully is of great value, however.

/If only 2^1 individuals, couples, or churches would make a $10,00 permonth commitment this would provide for our entire budget of $2415.00,We ask that you pray about the need in Hong Kong and seek out what theLord would have you do.

In each of the congregations we've been to we have distributedcommitment cards. If you wish to make a commitment either as an individual or a congregation, but no longer have the card, that's fine. Justdrop us a note in the mail telling us of your commitment. We'll praiseGod for every one we recievel

Thank YouThe Lord has already blessed us with many prayer partners and

supporters. We thank Him for this and we want to say thanks to youas well. It's only through your concern that we can share God's lovewith those in Hong Kong. Thank you so muchl

We were priviledged to "be the missionaries for a total of fiveVBS programs in 4 states this year. We participated personally in twoof them, one used our VBS packet and two others simply shared what theyknew about us and our work with the kids.

We spent a week each in Eldorado, 111. (Aug. 3-7) and Murphysboro,111. (Aug. 10-14) and we want to thank these Christian brothers andsisters for two very fine weeks. Thanks goes also to Francisville, Ind,,Bemie, Mo., and Piggot, Ark, for their interest and support of our workthru their VBS programs.

Good NewsWe recieved some good news on Saturday August 29th when Gary Ander

son wrote to tell us what we'd been guessing from news reports here inthe States. - The value of the US dollar has been significantly strengthened in recent months on overseas money markets. The US dollar will nowpurchase about 20^ more in Hong Kong dollars than it did less than oneyear ago.

We find this to be a good reason to praise God and thank Him. Thesupport that He has already provided thru His people now will be wortheven more and go even further in meeting the needs for our work. Werejoice also that since we last wrote to you we have recieved more monthlycommitments. Our total commitments of monthly support right now are upto $1,166.00 per month.

OCTOBER 1981

Hong Kong- Here We ComeWe are leaving! God has been very good to us in the past month.

He has provided more commitments of monthly support and that U.S.dollar just keeps going up on the world money market.

The decision was made in September to purchase our plane tickets30 days in advance when we reached $1300.00 in regular monthly support. We knew that we would need more than this but it was felt that $1300,00was enough to begin our work on. As of the 13th of September we hadthe necessary commitments to purchase our tickets.

We have arranged to leave from St. Louis, Missouri on October 23rdfor Hong Kong. We will fly from St. Louis to Seattle, Washington andthen on to Hong Kong. We should arrive in Hong Kong sometime on SundayOctober 25th, We are really anxious to get there! Please pray for usas we travel and then as we begin our work there.

ApartmentOne of the needs we would like to ask you to pray about is for

that of an apartment in Hong Kong. The housing situation there istight and housing is quite expensive. We are praying that we will beable to find the right apartment fairly quickly after we get there. We would like to find an apartment that is large enough for our familywith enough extra room for at least a small study area; one that isclose to the kids schools and our language schooli one that is in anarea of Hong Kong that would be good for beginning a new church work, and one that we can afford. This is a pretty big "order"! We're praying and we'd like you to pray also that God will lead us to the rightplace.

Other prayer needs include finding good schools for the kids, being able to set up housekeeping on the money we have available forit, and of course learning to live and work in a completely differentenvironment than we are accustomed to.

Language SchoolOur language studies will be a very important part of our work for

the first couple of years that we live in Hong Kong. It is our desireto leam as quickly as possible to speak, read and write the Cantoneselanguage well. Our studies will b^^n in mid-January 1982 and willcost somewhere between $200 - $300 U.S. per month and perhaps even more. For this reason we know that we will need another $200 or more inregular monthly support by the end of this year. Our studies will betaken and paid for under the semester system just like universitieshere in the states, so one time gifts earmarked for language studieswould also be helpful. God has been faithful in supplying our everyneed through His people thus far and we are confident that He willsupply this need as well.

We Made it!

Praise God we made it to Hong Kong safely. We arrived here on October 25th atabout 3:30 in the afternoon after a 22 hour flight from Seattle, Washington. On theway we stopped in Anchorage, Alaska (where it was very cold and windy) and Tokyo,Japan. Sara and Mark made the trip very well. Becky and I both suffered a good caseof jet lag— the rooms were still moving around us two days later. By the third day, though, we were ready to go and we've been on the go ever since.

Our freight arrived on October 29th and it, too, made the trip very well. When weopened the boxes not a single item was damaged. More praises!

Our first three weeks were spent in the home of Gary and Joyce Anderson. Theymet us at the airport and have been helpingus to get adjusted and settled ever since.

We want to say thanks to them for their help and hospitality.

Prayers Answered

One of the things we asked people to pray with us about in our October newsletter was finding anapartment. We wanted to be able to find one fairly quickly after wearrivedand alsoone that waslargeenough, close to schools for the children and for us, and in an area that would be good for beginningachurch. Well, someone must have done some praying. We believe the apartment wefoundis really ananswer to prayer.

Our apartment is located in Tai Po Market in the NewTerritories (the address is now printed onthe newsletter masthead). It is a fairly small apartment, only330 sq. ft., but is large enough so that weeven have a small study in it. There are several kindergartens within walking distance and we're onlyabout four miles from the language school. This will take only a 15-30 minute bus ride and for HongKong that's good! Shopping is available beginning a block away andwithin five orsixblocks wecanfindjust about anything weneed. Weare also very closeto public transportation ofall kinds. Thetrainstation and taxi stand is two blocks away and the bus, mini bus, and private van terminals are onlyfive orsix blocks from the apartment. We thank God for answering prayers by providing such a home.

Thai Po isalsoa goodplaceto begin a church. TaiPo is one ofthree oldmarket townsscheduledbythe Hong Kong government to become population centers for the New Territories. During the tenyears between 1977 and 1987 Tai Po was to undergo a massive reconstruction. This has alreadybegun. In 1978 thepopulation ofTai Powas about 30,000. Today it is a little over 100,000 andduring thenext three to five years it is expected to rise to 220,000 people. By the end of this time we will havenearly a quarter ofa million people within one-half mile ofour door. What a place to begin a church!

Our Activities

Our first three weeks in Hong Kong were spent in locatingan apartment and then making arrangements for all the things necessary to live in it. For one thing, the floors are wood andhadto besandeddown and finished. When the floor was laid, rough sawn boards were used. Then we had to have wallmounted water heaters installed for the shower and kitchen. Next came curtains, cabinets, appliances, and furniture. These things all took a great deal oftime mostly becauseoftransportationand language barriers. We are already learning to get around faster and communicate moreeffectively.

The first twoSundays were spent with the TuenMun Christian Church. This isa newcongregationand presently meets in Gary and Joyce Anderson's apartment. We really enjoyed getting to meetthese brothers and sisters. The worship services are all held in Cantonese so we didn't understand awhole lot of what was said. It's with the Tuen Mun congregation that we are planning to serve whilewe're in language school.

On November 1st, our secondSunday here, we accompanied Garyand three Chinese Christians to theNew Territories village of Lung GuTaan to hold an outdoor SundaySchool. Lung Gu Taan is a smallvillage near the border with China andhas no Christian work except for thisSunday School. Most of the men inthe village make their living in illegalactivities and spend their time drinking and gambling. The school used tobe held in the village until these menand the older boys began to disruptthe classes. Now the children aretransported a couple of miles out oftown for classes to be held. The kidsof Lung Gu Taan are_really beautifulkids. Our hearts went out to them. Knowing Jesus could make such a differehce "in their lives".

Now that we are pretty well settled into a home, we are taking a few weeks to visit all the othercongregations in Hong Kong. On November 15th we attended the Mong Kok Church of Christlocated in Kowloon. November 22nd was spent with the Fairview Park church and in the weeks aheadwe plan to visit with the Mei Foo Christian Church and the Hong Kong Church of Christ.

December 13th will be a new experience for me. Yip Mung Wai, the preacher at the Hong KongChurch of Christ, has asked me to speak there and since I do not know Cantonese, an interpreter willhave to be used for the sermon.

The new quarter, starting in December, at Tuen Mun Christian Church will find us beginning ourwork there. Becky will be teaciiing an English Sunday School class for our two and Gary and Joyce'syoungest two children. 1 will begin by learning a bus route for picking up kids for Sunday School. Welook forward to sharing more news from this congregation with you in the months ahead.

Things to Pray About . . .• the whole family in making the adjustment to living in Hong Kong.• being able to get Sara and Mark into schools by January. Tai Po is growing so fast that all theschools are filled to capacity, pray that openings come for them.• Becky and 1 as we enter language school in mid-January. Pray that we will be able to learn thelanguage quickly and accurately.• contacts for Christ in the Tai Po area. We learned an exciting fact a couple of days ago. In all thetime the Compass ofTruth radio program has been on the air very few, ifany, responses have comefrom the Tai Po area. During the past month, however, some 30 responses have come from Tai Poalone. This excites us. Pray that God will use us to accomplish His will for a church here in Tai Po.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. The Lord has been good to us through Hispeople. We look forward to serving Him here in Hong Kong.

In His Service,

Dwain & Becky Anderson
