Een weerbare samenleving

Waar ben jij bang voor? Voor spinnen? Voor oorlog en terreur? Voor de dood? Voor het zika virus? Voor gebrek aan aandacht? Voor een trol? Om te falen? Voor pleinen? Of voor de toekomst? Kom daarom naar onze Night University, al was het alleen al om over die angsten en fobieën te leren en er misschien wel van af te komen! Face your Fears! Volg een college psychologie of gedragswetenschappen, leer van een rampenanalist en bestrijder, neem een kijkje in de keuken van het instituut Victimologie voor slachtoffers of kom anders gewoon lekker insecten eten. Je kunt het zo gek niet bedenken of een mens kent er wel angst voor. Kijk maar eens in onze eigen directe omgeving, en dan leven wij nog eens in een regio die betrekkelijk veilig is en waar mensen wonen die behoren tot de gelukkigste op aarde.

Angst is een natuurlijk mechanisme om ons te waarschuwen voor fenomenen die gevaarlijk voor ons kunnen zijn. Maar ze moeten niet ons leven gaan beheersen. Ik moet bij het thema angst denken aan het oude gezegde: Een mens lijdt het meest onder het lijden dat men (hij) vreest. Angst kan makkelijk in een obsessie transformeren.

Freud was een van de eerste psychologen die ontdekte hoe angst, neurosen en ons onderbewuste ons dagelijks leven kunnen verzieken. Zijn wetenschappelijke analyse en methoden stonden aan de basis van de psychologie. Hij leerde ons niet alleen hoe we kunnen begrijpen wat er aan de hand is, maar het gaf mensen handvatten om verandering in hun leven te brengen.

Onze wetenschappelijke disciplines dragen eraan bij dat de samenleving kan doorgronden hoe (maatschappelijke) fenomenen in elkaar zitten en hoe we ze kunnen ordenen om veiligheid te creëren. Door onze ratio te gebruiken leren we onze emoties kennen en beheersen. En onze samenleving vooruit te helpen. En zij zorgen ervoor dat we snel kunnen handelen bij herkenbare situaties, het maakt onze samenleving weerbaar en veerkrachtig.

Ons motto is Understanding Society in order to advance it en Night University maakt het met een rijke, bijzondere programmering extra inzichtelijk.

Tilburg University Tilburg University draagt bij aan het oplossen van maatschappelijkevraagstukken. Dat doen we vooral door het ontwikkelen en overdragen van kennis en hetsamenbrengen van mensen uit diverse vakgebieden en organisaties. Daarom nodigen webedrijven, organisaties, overheden en burgers uit samen met ons te werken aan nieuweinzichten en waardevolle antwoorden voor de maatschappij. Die innovatie vinden we door teonderzoeken, te leren en te begrijpen. In dat licht laat Night University op een voor iedereentoegankelijke manier zien wat Tilburg University in huis heeft.

Weekend van de WetenschapRondom het Weekend van de Wetenschap (1 en 2 oktober 2016) organiseren Nederlandse uni-versiteiten gezamenlijk de jaarlijkse U-Meet. Doel is het draagvlak voor het wetenschappelijk onderwijs en onderzoek versterken. Hoe kan wetenschappelijk onderzoek een antwoord geven op maatschappelijke vraagstukken? Wetenschap, maatschappelijke organisaties, politiek en publiek ontmoeten elkaar tijdens de vele activiteiten. Tijdens Night University worden diverse programma’s georganiseerd die aansluiten bij het landelijke thema: De Digitale Samenleving. Lees er meer over op nightuniversity.nl

De programmaonderdelen van Night University zijn allen gerelateerd aan een bepaald aspect van Face your Fears: het veilige pad, het duistere pad, de weg van de veerkracht, en het actietraject. Je kunt een van deze thema’s nemen als leidraad voor je avond, of willekeurig programma’s bezoeken. Op diverse plekken op het campusterrein zijn programmaoverzichten beschikbaar die in één oogopslag laten zien waar je voor welk onderdeel moet zijn. Heb je vragen? Opening Night University19.30 - 19.50 uur, Foyer Dante, Dante BuildingRector Magnificus Emile Aarts, wethouder onderwijs Marcelle Hendrickx en student Amber Kraak openen Night University 2016! De muzikale omlijsting wordt verzorgd door een ensemble van Koninklijke Harmonie Orpheus. Orpheus is opgericht in 1864 en onderscheidt zich als Tilburgse Harmonie door haar respectabele geschiedenis en vooral door haar muzikale kunnen. Al jaren behoort ze tot de top van de landelijke harmonieorkesten.

Junior Night UniversityHet Wetenschapsknooppunt Brabant organiseert de derde editie van de Junior Night University. Van 18.30 tot 20.00 uur is er voor bezoekers van 9 tot 14 jaar (ouders zijn welkom!) een speciaal programma over angsten. Inschrijving vooraf is noodzakelijk.

Tijdens Night University organiseert Mundial We Are Mundial, met Charles Groenhuijsen als bijzonder gastspreker. Groenhuijsen beziet als Amerika-deskundige de naderende (en waarschijnlijk zinderende) Amerikaanse verkiezingen tussen Donald Trump en Hillary Clinton.

Debat Reshoring: Do you dare to produce it yourself?20.00 - 20.45 uur, Dz 6, Dante BuildingProductie in lageloonlanden neemt af in populariteit. Besparen op loonkosten is steeds minder zaligmakend; steeds vaker kiest een bedrijf ervoor om productie (deels) naar eigen land terug te halen. Beste bezoeker,

Welkom op op 4e editie van Night University. Na de gezellig kermis van vorig jaar werd het dit jaar tijd voor wat meer actie in de tent: we gaan de confrontatie aan met onze angsten!

Laten we ons eerst even voorstellen: wij zijn Wessel en Patty en maken dit jaar voor de tweede keer deel uit van het studentenbestuur van Night University. Samen met vier nieuwe collega’s (Naomi, Maartje, Leonie en Tetyana) zijn we in mei vol enthousiasme begonnen om dit mooie evenement mogelijk te maken. Dit doen we niet alleen, maar samen met verschillende afdelingen binnen Tilburg University. De medewerkers die met ziel en zaligheid werken aan Night University treden zelf niet vaak op de voorgrond, maar zonder hun inzet zou deze avond niet mogelijk zijn. Door het grote succes van vorig jaar is die organisatie dit jaar een stukje groter geworden dan de afgelopen jaren. Waar we vorig jaar met een kleine groep mensen nog veel moesten improviseren, wisten we dit jaar beter bij wie we konden aankloppen en wat ons te wachten stond. Veel nieuwe gezichten dus, maar de sfeer is gebleven: geen formele vergaderingen en taakverdelingen maar veel afspraken via Whatsapp, taken oppakken als je er energie voor voelt, en een vakantie betekende niet dat iemand onbereikbaar was. De organisatie laat zich kenmerken door een veelgebruikte uitspraak: “komt goed”.

Vol trots presenteren we het programmaboekje van dit jaar, met wederom zeer uiteenlopen-de sessies. Aan de hand van vier routes nemen we je mee langs je grootste angsten.Lig je wakker na een enge film en krijg je kippenvel van een spannend boek? Dan is de route van het duistere pad misschien iets voor jou. Ben je eerder bang voor een sollicitatiegesprek of om opgesloten te worden in een Escape Room? Kies dan een van de interactieve work-shops uit het actietraject. Wil je meer weten over wetenschappelijke visies op angst en de veerkracht die mensen hebben met deze emotie? De weg van de veerkracht biedt programmaonderdelen over verslaving, ‘Fear of Missing Out’ en ontvoerd worden in het buitenland. Wordt het je allemaal even te veel? In de veilige route ontsnap je aan je angsten en kun je genieten van muzikale optredens, eten of ga je in debat met de gemeente. Je bent uiteraard ook vrij om te kiezen voor losse onderdelen uit de verschillende routes!

Namens het studentenbestuur Night University 2016, wensen we je veel succes met het confronteren van je angsten, maar vooral ook veel plezier!

Gemeente TilburgTilburg heeft jou, als (toekomstig) student, een bruisend studentenleven te bieden. Natuur-lijk bepaal je zelf hoe gezellig jouw studententijd is, maar aan de stad zal het niet liggen. Tilburg heeft een compacte binnenstad waarin je je medestudenten zeker tegenkomt. 1 op de 7 inwoners is namelijk student: ruim 29.000! De studenten- en studieverenigingen organiseren allerlei activiteiten in de stad en zorgen zo voor extra sfeer. Naast hetuitstekende onderwijs zijn er in de stad volop mogelijkheden voor uitgaan, cultuur, sport en ontspanning.

Night University 2016 wil op meerdere manieren de brug tussen universiteit en stadversterken. Gemeente Tilburg is een belangrijke partner in de organisatie van Night University. Wetenschap en stedelijke problematiek komen samen in drie interessante debat-ten die de Gemeente Tilburg samen met Tilburg University organiseert rond de thema’s Zorg, Reshoring en de Verdraagzame Wijk. Ook dit is Understanding Society.

The City of TilburgTilburg has much to off er to students, which includes a vibrant student life. Of course how active and fun your time here will be is up to you, but in Tilburg the possibilities are endless. Tilburg has a compact city center, so you will probably run into familiar faces and classmates. 1 out of 7 inhabitants is a student, which adds up to over 29.000 students. The student associations organize all kinds of activities in the city, giving it a real special atmosphere. As well as being an excellent place to study, there are plenty of places to go out, whether it’s culture, sports or recreation that you’re looking for.

Night University 2016 wants to strengthen the bridge between the university and the City of Tilburg in a number of ways. The City of Tilburg is an important partner in the organization of Night University. How science can help to tackle urban problems is the subject of three interesting debates that the City of Tilburg and Tilburg University are organizing around the themes of Care, Reshoring and the Tolerant Neighborhood. This too is Understanding Society.

Dear visitor,

Welcome to the fourth edition of Night University. After last year’s Brain Fair, it was time for some more action: this year we are going to face our fears!

Let us start by introducing ourselves: We are Wessel and Patty, and this is the second year we are on the Student Board of Night University. It was with great enthusiasm that in May of this year, together with four new colleagues (Naomi, Maartje, Leonie and Tetyana), we started working on the realization of this great event. It is not just our board that has been engaged in this these past few months; we have been working together with staff from various divisions/teams within Tilburg University. They have put their hearts and souls into the Night University, working in the background most of the time. Without their commitment this event would not be possible. As a result of the tremendous success of last year’s event the organization has become somewhat bigger than in previous years. While the small group of people organizing the event last year still had to improvise a lot, this year was easier because we knew who to turn to for what and what to expect. Lots of new faces therefore, but the atmosphere is still the same: no formal meetings or division of tasks, but instead making arrangements via Whatsapp, doing things when you feel you have the energy for them, and being able to reach people also when they were on vacation. The organization is best characterized by an expression frequently heard in the months leading up to the event: “No worries, we’ll get it done.”

We are very proud to present this year’s program booklet, once again featuring very diverse sessions. We have four routes, taking you past your greatest fears. Do you lie awake at night after a scary movie; do suspenseful books give you goosebumps? Then the route you might want to take is the Dark Path. If what scares you most is a job interview or getting locked up in an Escape Room, you might want to opt for the interactive workshops from the Action Range. Would you like to find out more about scientific views of fear and people’s resilience against this emotion? The Road of Resilience offers program components on addiction, ‘Fear of Missing Out’, and getting kidnapped abroad. If things get too much for you, you can take the Safe Path to escape from your fears and enjoy musical performances, grab a bite to eat, or enter into a debate with the local authorities. Naturally, you can also pick and choose from among the separate components of the various routes!

On behalf of the Student Board, we wish you lots of success facing your fears, but above all lots of fun!

In Tilburg, there are two reception centers for asylum seekers, in which over 900 refugees are being received, which has led to resistance and great concern in the eastern part of Tilburg. You can choose to go for one of these themes, or pick and choose freely from among the programs offered. There are overviews of the programs at various locations on campus showing you at a glance where to be for what component of the program. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to talk to someone from the organization. In the middle of the campus, in the white tent, is a meeting- and information point especially for international students. They will be happy to help you. Have a great time!!

Opening Night University19:30 - 19:50 hrs, Foyer Dante, Dante Building Rector Magnificus Emile Aarts, Alderman Marcelle Hendrickx and student Amber Kraak will open Night University 2016! The musical accompaniment is provided by an ensemble of Koninklijke Harmonie Orpheus.


A resilient society

What are you afraid of? Spiders? War and terror? Death? The zika virus? Lack of attention? Trolls? Failing? Open spaces? The future?

Whatever your answer may be, come to our Night University, if only to learn about those fears and phobias, and perhaps even get rid of them! Face your Fears! Attend a lecture on psychology or behavioral sciences, learn from a disaster analyst and disaster fighter, find out what the International Victimology Institute is all about, and while you are there, why not try having insects for dinner?

People can be afraid of virtually anything. You only need to look at world right around you to find this is true, and then remember we are living in a fairly safe place compared to most, and the people here are among the happiest in the world.

Fear is a natural mechanism to warn us against phenomena that might be dangerous for us. But we should not allow our fears to control our lives. The theme of fear reminds me of an old saying in Dutch, which comes down to people tending to suffer most from the suffering they fear might be in store for them. Fear can easily turn into an obsession.

Freud was one of the first psychologists to discover how fears, neuroses and our subconscious can spoil our daily lives. His scientific analysis and methods stood at the cradle of psychology. They not only taught us how we can understand what is ailing us, but also gave people tools to change their lives around.

Our scientific disciplines contribute to society finding out about the nature and structure of (societal) phenomena, and how to establishorder in them so that safety can be can created. By using our ratio we get to know our emotions and we learn to control them, advancing our society in the process. Thanks to our scientific disciplines we can act fast in familiar situations, making our society strong and resilient, one that can withstand shocks without crumbling.

Our motto at Tilburg University is Understanding Society in order to advance it, and Night University presents a wealth of proofpoints on how we realize this mission.
