Mike Lawrence has been impacting education as a teacher, speaker, technology coordinator and director for more than a decade. He has led the delivery of the Principal Training Programfor Southern California administrators,, as well as the Student Technology Showcase andTechnology Proficiency programs. He is a frequent presenter at local and national conferences and was honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2003 and cofounded the Google Teacher Academy in 2006. Mike is an author and editor and can often be found at his local coffee house on his laptop. He currently serves as Executive Director of Computer Using

Educators (

www.CUE.org), supporting its California‐based membership by advancing student achievement through technology on a national level. Each year, thousands of educators converge in Palm Springs for CUE’s annual conference, making it the premier educational technology event of the Western US.

Formerly a high school English teacher, Dr. Wagner has since served as an educational technology coordinator at the site, district, and county levels. He now serves as the president of the Educational Technology and Life Corporation, which provides professional development and consulting services to schools, districts, and other educational institutions. In this capacity, Dr. Wagner is the CUEtoYOU professional development coordinator for Computer Using Educators, Inc (CUE) and the director of the Google Teacher Academy. His doctoral research focused on the use of video games in education, and specifically on the potential applications of massively

multiplayer online role‐playing games (MMORGPs) as constructivist learning environments.

Dan McCormack has over fifteen years of public school experience as a former math and computer‐math teacher, technology administrator, and superintendent. His university work was at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received bachelor’s degrees in Math and Psychology, and his masters in educational administration. He was a fellow in the eighth cycle of the Cooperative Superintendency Program at UT, and received his doctorate in educational administration in 1991. Dan joined Apple Computer in June of 1996, and has served as an education technology consultant working with district, state and legislative leaders related to

strategies and policies for school improvement through technology integration.

143 APPLYING HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS TO LEARNER RESPONSE SYSTEMS Scott Caulfield, Promethean

Within the context of a digital lesson using an interactive whiteboard and voting system, come see how formative assessment can be used effectively in the classroom environment. Using Promethean’s ActivStudio software along with the ActivBoard and ActiVotes, teachers can bring voting beyond the standard summative assessment questioning strategies and improve student achievement while promoting higher order thinking. Participants will leave the session having received numerous questioning strategies for assessment devices. These strategies will link to all questioning classifications from Bloom’s Taxonomy, allowing participants to move beyond basic questioning strategies in relation to assessment devices.

Creating, posting, and utilizing audio and video podcasting as an instructional media for the classroom. Teachers will learn the use of digital audio recorders and flash video recorders in creating podcasts of important lessons, or concepts, that students can review on everything from their classroom computer, home computer and even their cell phones and iPods. This concept can be applied to all grade levels.

Sharing ideas, customizing answer sheets or monthly reporting requirements to meet state inquiry, including the development of data spreadsheets that will identify student deficiencies, measure performance by ethnicity and facilitate differentiated instruction. From the first day of school, creating parent brochures to weekly or monthly data analysis, once created the use of technology in a classroom can inspire, innovate and confirm student progress.

In this presentation, I will discuss ways in which teachers can create and incorporate digital video for use in the classroom and web.
