STEWARDSHIP OF GOD’S BLESSINGS
August 19, 2018……………..……..……………. ..$6,519.50 Last year…………………………….……..……......$7,135.50
Thank you for your continued support of our parish and its many needs.
May God bless your generosity to Sacred Heart!
My Dear Friends in Christ, The process to becoming a fully professed Capuchin friar begins with a year of postulancy, which is a period of inquiry into our way of life. The next year is called the “novitiate” – where the “novices” in the Capuchin way of life enter into a period of intense prayer and contemplation to discern whether or not to take vows. I made my novitiate year on the outskirts of Pittsburgh nine years ago (how time flies!). One of my most memorable moments (and there were many) was a homily given by a local pastor on this weekend’s first reading. Again and again this Pastor repeated the words of Joshua: “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” What a powerful witness of Joshua – and what a challenge for each of us. Each week, each day, perhaps each waking hour, we are presented with the continual question: with whom will we stand? We answer this question “with the Lord,” often. At the same time, because of our human weakness, there will be times when our an-swer (and actions) is lacking. The reality of human sinfulness is what makes the end of this weekend’s Gospel to poignant: As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Yes, there are times when we will stand with the Lord; there are times when we will fail and stand elsewhere. Even in this times of failure, however, we are reminded that there is no one else to whom we can go to provide us with encouragement and forgiveness, the Lord Jesus Christ. Praised be Him, now and forever, Amen!

which the church generally considers to be 7 to 15 years old, who may not have received age-appropriate Sacraments. Children who have not been Baptized, or who did not receive the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation
at the “regular” time may begin this process beginning in September.

Faith Formation
RCIA
Thinking of becoming Catholic or of completing your Christian initiation in the Catholic community? The Catholic Church welcomes anyone who inquires about, or who seeks, full membership in the Church and Gospel life through RCIA (The Rite of Christian initiation of Adults), which is the Church’s process of preparing adults for the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Please call or email Fr. John (914-963-4205; [email protected]) if you (or anyone you know) would like to investigate or begin the process of RCIA. RCIA sessions will begin in early September.
Faith Formation Class
Br. Richard’s class will resume Tuesday, September 11 at 10:00 AM
in parish office. Subject matter will be Christology,
the study of the Person and Natures of Christ, which will include the Personality of Jesus.
Later in the year we will do Sacraments and time permitting some Church History.
New members always welcome!
Children’s Liturgy of the Word The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special opportunity for
children at the 9:45 Mass to share the word of God
in an age appropriate reflection.

Church Hall where they will celebrate the Liturgy of the Word.
They will return to the church at the Presentation of the Gifts.
Adult volunteers are always welcome!
If you would like to help, please call Deanne in the
Parish Office or email [email protected].
