Preface

Even today Bach, the musical universal genius, still fillsthe musical world with reverent wonder. And even todayno composer and no interpreter can choose to ignore thismaster’s cultural legacy. No other composer’s works havebeen understood and performed over generations in sucha variety of ways or made to suit contemporary tastes inso many different arrangements.

This song, “If Thou Be Near” (“Bist Du bei mir”), is takenfrom the second Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.In 1721 she married the Kapellmeister, organist andcomposer Johann Sebastian Bach, whose first wife haddied a year before, in Köthen, where she herself had beenwell on the way to a successful singing career. By doingso she sacrificed the possibility of her own artisticdevelopment, cared for his four children from his firstmarriage and bore him thirteen more in the next twentyyears, seven of whom died as children. Anna Magdalenasurvived her husband by ten years, and died in Leipzig in1760 in poverty as an “almswoman”.

The song “Bist Du bei mir” is one of the most moving andbeautiful declarations of love in the history of music. Thetext is by an unknown poet. Bach set the simple words tomusic with all the passion of a lover:

„Be thou with me, and I’ll gladly goTo death and to my repose.Ah, how my end would bring contentment,If, pressing with thy hands so lovely,Thou wouldst my faithful eyes then close.”

May this wonderful music still find its way into the heartsof today’s listeners!

Noch heute erfüllt Bach als musikalisches Universalgenie dieMusikwelt mit andächtiger Bewunderung. Und auch heutenoch kommt kein Komponist, kein Interpret amkünstlerischen Vermächtnis dieses Meisters vorbei. Vonkeinem anderen Komponisten wurden die Werke überGenerationen hinweg so unterschiedlich aufgefasst undmusiziert und in unterschiedlichsten Bearbeitungen demZeitgeschmack angepasst.

Das vorliegende Lied „Bist Du bei mir“ entstammt dem 2.Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach. 1721 hatte dieseden ein Jahr zuvor verwitweten Kapellmeister, Organistenund Komponisten Johann Sebastian Bach in Köthen, wo sieselbst einer erfolgreichen Karriere als Sängerin entgegensehen konnte, geheiratet. Sie verzichtete damit auf eineeigene künstlerische Entwicklung, versorgte seine vierKinder aus erster Ehe und gebar ihm in den folgendenzwanzig Jahren noch dreizehn weitere, von denen siebenbereits im Kindesalter starben. Anna Magdalena überlebteihren Mann um 10 Jahre. Sie starb 1760 völlig verarmt inLeipzig als sogenannte „Almosenfrau“.

Das Lied „Bist Du bei mir“ ist eine der ergreifendsten undam schönsten klingenden Liebeserklärungen derMusikgeschichte. Der Text stammt von einem unbekanntenDichter. Bach vertont die schlichten Worte mit der Inbrunsteines liebenden Menschen:

„Bist du bei mir, geh’ ich mit Freudenzum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh’.Ach, wie vergnügt wär’ so mein Ende,es drückten deine lieben schönen Händemir die getreuen Augen zu!“

Möge diese wunderbare Musik auch heute noch den Weg indie Herzen der Hörer finden!
