Inleiding

In de Oracle adviestrajecten uitgevoerd door COMPAREX is een trend gesignaleerd van compliancerisico’s die veel voor-

komen en een hoge financiële impact kunnen hebben. Veelal blijkt dat door infrastructurele wijzigingen of herinstalla-

ties de risico’s drastisch beperkt kunnen worden. In deze whitepaper gaan wij in op deze risico’s en geven wij aan wat

de alternatieven zijn om deze risico’s te beperken.

Veelvoorkomende risico’s:

1. Nieuwe Oracle LMS guideline ten aanzien van VMware 5.1 en hogere omgevingen.

a. Niet het cluster maar de gehele vCenter-omgeving moet gelicentieerd worden volgens de Oracle LMS

guidelines.

Recent heeft Oracle zijn guidelines ten aanzien van de Oracle licentieregels gewijzigd. Voor VMware 5.1 en hogere

versies moeten alle fysieke hosts die gebruik kunnen maken van de shared storage gelicentieerd worden.

Hiervoor beredeneert Oracle dat er sprake is van een installatie voor alle hosts binnen de vCenter omgeving. Contracten

zijn dus ongewijzigd maar door veranderingen van de VMware-technieken past Oracle een andere interpretatie toe.

De financiële impact voor klanten kan zeer groot zijn wanneer Oracle deze guidelines actief gaat handhaven. Recent

zijn de eerste casussen gesignaleerd waar blijkt dat Oracle deze guidelines actief handhaaft. Voor versie 5.1 dienen alle

fysieke hosts in het VMware cluster gelicentieerd te zijn.

Oracle heeft de volgende informatie hierover (niet online toegankelijk voor klanten) gepubliceerd:

Licensing Requirement: With VMware 5.1 or later, the customer has the ability to easily move the vm running Oracle via

vMotion to any 5.1 host within the vCenter Server Instance.

All 5.1 hosts within the vCenter Server Instance will need to be licensed. Further, due to the 5.1 environment having

access to the shared storage of the 4.1 Cluster A, the Cluster A must also require licenses.

The vMotion feature can move the Oracle across the 5.1 host to 4.1 cluster by connected shared storage.

Partitioning document Oracle:

Soft Partitioning:

Soft partitioning segments the operating system using OS resource managers. The operating system limits the num-

ber of CPUs where an Oracle database is running by creating areas where CPU resources are allocated to applications

within the same operating system. This is a flexible way of managing data processing resources since the CPU capacity

can be changed fairly easily, as additional resource is needed.

Examples of such partitioning type include: Solaris 9 Resource Containers, AIX Workload Manager, HP Process Resource

Manager, Affinity Management, Oracle VM, and VMware.Unless explicitly stated elsewhere in this document, soft par-

titioning (including features/functionality of any technologies listed as examples above) is not permitted as a means to

determine or limit the number of software licenses required for any given server or cluster of servers.

Hard Partitioning:

Hard partitioning physically segments a server, by taking a single large server and separating it into distinct

smaller systems. Each separated system acts as a physically independent, self-contained server, typically with

its own CPUs, operating system, separate boot area, memory, input/output subsystem and network resources.

Oracle-approved hard partitioning technologies as listed in this section of the policy document are permitted

as a means to limit the number of software licenses required for any given server or a cluster of servers.

Oracle has deemed certain technologies, possibly modified by configuration constraints, as hard partitioning,

and no other technology or configuration qualify. Approved hard partitioning technologies include: Physi-

cal Domains (also known as PDomains, Dynamic Domains, or Dynamic System Domains), Solaris Zones (also

known as Solaris Containers, capped Zones/Containers only), LPAR (adds DLPAR with AIX 5.2), Micro-Partiti-

ons (capped partitions only), vPar, nPar, Integrity Virtual Machine (capped partitions only), Secure Resource

Partitions (capped partitions only), Fujitsu’s PPAR.

Using IBM processors in TurboCore mode is not permitted as a means to reduce the number of software

licenses required; all cores must be licensed.

IBM Power VM Live Partition Mobility is not an approved hard partitioning technology. All cores on both

the source and destination servers in an environment using IBM Power VM Live Partition Mobility must be

licensed.

Oracle VM Server may be used as hard partitioning technology only as described in the following docu-

ments:

Any technology not listed in the Hard Partitioning section of this document is considered soft partitioning

technology.

Onduidelijk is waarom deze guidelines nu pas van kracht zijn, terwijl VMware 5.1 al 3 jaar bestaat.

Database-export met Advanced Compression

Er zijn verschillende manieren waarop u de optie Advanced Compression kunt gebruiken. Hieronder staan deze weer-

gegeven.

• Table compression – compressie van tabellen in de database.

• RMAN compression – compressie van de backup.

• Datapump compression – compressie van de export van de database.

COMPAREX voert regelmatig licentie-adviestrajecten uit en ziet dat in bijna alle gevallen klanten gecomprimeerde

exports van de database uitvoeren, hierboven datapump compression genoemd. In de database wordt het gebruik

hiervan gelogd en zo is er te zien hoe vaak er een gecomprimeerde export heeft plaatsgevonden. Het gebruik hiervan

vereist de optie ‘advanced compression’ welke ongeveer EUR 10.000,- per processor kost exclusief support. Vaak ma-

ken klanten hier onbewust gebruik van zonder dat men zich realiseert dat dit licentieconsequenties heeft.

Bij table compression zijn klanten zich meestal wel bewust van het gebruik. Uiteraard vereist dit ook de optie Advanced

Compression.

COMPAREX biedt ondersteuning bij het proactief detecteren van optiegebruik en het bieden van oplossingen door

herinstallatie. Mocht de optie advanced compression wel gewenst zijn, dan biedt COMPAREX ondersteuning bij het

maken van de business case.

Hosting licenties

Contractueel kunnen klanten Oracle licenties gebruiken voor hun interne bedrijfsdoeleinden. Doordat er steeds meer

interactie komt tussen software en er ook steeds meer Software as a Service (SaaS)-oplossingen komen is het niet in

alle gevallen duidelijk wanneer er hostinglicenties benodigd zijn en wanneer gewone licenties voldoen.

Een duidelijk geval van hosting is een SaaS-oplossing die verkocht wordt aan klanten waarbij gebruikgemaakt wordt

van Oracle technologie. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan Salesforce. Dit CRM systeem gebruikt een klant van Salesforce

voor zijn interne bedrijfsdoeleinden en niet voor de bedrijfsdoeleinden van Salesforce. Vandaar dat Salesforce ook hos-

tinglicenties heeft van Oracle.

Maar er zijn ook andere voorbeelden te bedenken waar er wel toegang is door derden maar de Oracle software toch

voor de interne bedrijfsdoeleinden wordt gebruikt.

Data recovery-omgevingen

In de meeste gevallen dienen data recovery omgevingen gelicentieerd te worden. Enkel wanneer klanten gebruikmaken

van een failover-omgeving en voldoen aan de volgende regels dan kan er één node ongelicentieerd blijven:

1. Nodes moeten in een cluster geconfigureerd zijn.

2. Failover node mag niet meer dan 10 keer een dagdeel (op verschillende dagen) actief zijn.

3. Nodes moeten één shared disk array delen.

4. Na reparatie van de primaire node moet er terug geswitched worden.

5. Slechts één ongelicentieerde node per geclusterde omgeving is toegestaan.

Communicatie vanuit Oracle hierover:

Failover:

Failover: In this method, nodes are configured in “clusters” with the first installed node acting as a primary node. If

the primary node fails, one of the surviving nodes in the cluster acts as the primary node. In this type of environment,

Oracle permits its licensed Technology customers to run the Technology Programs (listed on the Technology Price List)

on an unlicensed spare computer for up to a total of ten separate days in any given calendar year. The above right only

applies when a number of machines are arranged in a cluster and share one disk array. Once the primary node is repai-

red, you must switch back to the primary node. Only one failover node per clustered environment is at no charge for

up to ten separate days even if multiple nodes are configured as failover nodes. When licensing options on a failover

environment, the options must match the number of licenses of the associated database. Additionally, when licensing

by Named User Plus, the user minimums are waived on one failover node only. Any use beyond the right granted in this

section must be licensed separately. In a failover environment, the same license metric must be used for the production

and failover nodes when licensing a given clustered configuration.

Standby:

Standby: One or more copies of the primary database are maintained on a separate server(s) at all times. The sites in

a standby configuration may be dispersed geographically and are connected by Oracle Net Services. As the primary

database is modified, log information generated by the changes are sent to the standby database(s) and subsequent-

ly applied to the standby database. If the primary database fails, a standby database can be activated to be the new

primary database. In this environment, the primary and the standby databases must be fully licensed. Additionally, the

same metric must be used when licensing the databases in a standby environment. If any Option or Management Pack

(except RAC) is licensed on the primary server, then it must also be licensed on the Standby server. If RAC is on the

primary server but not on the standby server, then licensing it is not required.
