Current Political Environment

The European Union is continuously encouraging the plastic industry to become more circular and to increase the amount of recycled polymers in products.

The European Commission recently made legislative proposals introducing new waste-management targets regarding:

• reuse, recycling and landfilling

• strengthening provisions on waste prevention and extended producer responsibility

• streamlining definitions, reporting obligations and calculation methods for targets

• Setting up of the Circular Plastics Alliance – Roadmap 20th September 2019

More is expected from the plastic industry…

In an EU circular economy for plastics, the industry has to become more circular, for example by increasing the amount of recycled polymers used in the EU. The plastics converting industry in Europe composed of 50,000 SMEs decided to set up a common voluntary industrial approach.

Plastics converting companies play a crucial role in the transition towards a more circular economy for plastics and the industry wants to be more transparent regarding the efforts that are being undertaken.

Every kg of recycled polymers is going through a plastic converting facility and as such converters are best positioned to monitor the progress on the performance and quantity of recycled polymers used in Europe.

A mountain to be climbed towards 2025

There is a long road ahead…

Currently, the industry is annually reusing ~5 MT of recycled polymers and the aim is 10 MT of recycled polymers reused annually between 2025 and 2030 (excl. internal production scrap or by-products).

Making plastics MORE circular is a common objective of the polymer value chains.

We are on a mission for MORE in the EU.

The MORE Platform

MORE is a single, unified IT platform and tool used to monitor the performance and quantity of uptake of recycled polymers in Europe. It is a short survey for plastics converters in Europe, and it is fully in compliance with EU competition law.

Quality requirements are polymer specific and MORE is able to monitor the performance of the recycled polymers in different conversion technologies.

The MORE platform is:

• User Friendly (including a MORE APP)

• Highly Protected with certification

• Offers EU harmonised/verified data consolidation per country/market & polymers

• Available in all EU languages and free of charge for companies

Our IT team followed the best practices for the coding procedure (eloquent queries are used, passwords are hashed in the DB, etc.).

The Laravel framework is used for the web page. This framework equips all the controls necessary to prevent abuse (XSS, CSRF, SQL Injection, etc.).

The Bcrypt algorithm is applied for password encryption, which is among the strongest password hashing functions.

The data is stored on the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform. Azure is among the leading hosting and infrastructure providers.

The platform has VAT number registration to avoid double counting (pledges versus commitments).

MORE General Definitions

Post-consumer waste: Post-consumer waste is refuse or rubbish consisting of everyday items that are discarded by the public. It can be collected from residential areas (domestic/household waste), streets, parks, collection depots (container parks) and waste dumps/landfills, it includes all types of packaging, shopping bags, bottles, furniture, matrasses, etc.

Commercial waste: Commercial waste consists of waste from premises used wholly or mainly for the purposes of trade or business (eg. supermarkets, shops, offices,..) or for the purpose of sport, recreation, education or entertainment.

Post-industrial waste: Post-industrial waste is waste produced by industrial activity which includes any material that is rendered useless during a manufacturing process. For example waste which can be obtained from plastics processing, manufacturing and packaging industries including drums, components, surplus stocks and malformed parts are included in this category.

Production scrap is to be excluded from MORE: Production scraps are volumes recycled by companies that only process their own scraps, to be reused for their own inhouse production. Waste not leaving the production site.
