Many parents struggle to find appropriate, affordable care, which economists say is crucial for female participation in the workforce. Thankfully, an Engadine mum is helping parents find their way through the maze of different styles of care and seemingly end- less waiting lists. Donna James started Local Child Care whose website can be found at www.localchildcare.com.au. The service, which is free for parents, allows them to search by suburb or by type of care (long daycare, family care, nanny ser- vice) or they can look for services outside the area. There is also a monthly newslet- ter which provides updates on vacancies. Mrs James said she has had an ‘‘amazing’’ response from parents as well as child-care centres. ‘‘It is really rewarding,’’ she said. Mrs James said people can get a good feel for a centre from visiting the website and viewing photo- graphs. The site lists 61 centres for Suth- erland Shire and 32 for St George. There is also information on preschools as well as child-friendly sites and local job vacancies.
