ie liggaampie van n pasgebore baba-

meisie is drie weke gelede in nmuni-

    sipale asblik in Goodwood gevind

ng een van honderde soortgelyke gevalle

    in die Wes-Kaap.

Alhoewel die hawelose man wat haar ge-

vind het, omstanders en paramedici ewe ge-

skok was, het hierdie vonds omtrent geen

    verdere opslae gemaak nie.

n Lid van die Wes-Kaapse forensiese pa-

tologie-eenheid wat die liggaam vir n na-

doodse ondersoek kom haal het, s hulle

sien byna weekliks so n vonds.

In 2011 was daar meer as 500 soortgelyke

    maak.

    As honderde desperate swanger vroue

    hulp beskikbaar is.

gaampie in Goodwood gevind is, is daar n

huiswaar babas versorgwordwat nie n an-

    rende welsynsraad gestig is.

gerskappe. Hulle bring hierdie vrouens in

kontak met n maatskaplike werker, wat

hulle kan bystaan in n besluitnemingspro-

    ses.

Miems. En hulle oordeel nie die ma nie.

Op die oomblik mag die Ubuntu-huis as

plek van veiligheid ses babas versorg, maar

sodra hul registrasie-aansoek as n kinder-

en jeugsorgsentrum goedgekeur is, sal hul-

    le twaalf babas kan huisves.

Hierdie proses is al meer as twee jaar

aan die gang, s Naas. Hul infrastruktuur

aanneming, is dikwels negatief, s Elzeth

Conradie, n maatskaplike werker van Ab-

    betrokke is by die Ubuntu-huis.

    Bisarre wending in n huisbraak-

    ville, Durbanville, Goodwood, Brackenfell

    Speurspan

Die polisie se speurspan, wat kapt. Jannie

Smit en konst. Bernard Mussett ingesluit

het, het toe daarheen gegaan endi 22-jarige

    verdagte opgespoor.

Di man het hulle na Kraaifontein ge-

neemwaar die betrokke kluis en die inhoud

daarvan toe wl opgespoor is, s Nimb.

    Sonstraalhoogte in Durbanville.

di twee mans betrokke was. Tydens hier-

inligting deurgegee oor n vermeende dief

Oakdale. Volgens hul inligting is dimotor-

fiets gebruik vir huisbrake. Hulle het die

    vermeende motorfietsdief hier in hegtenis

    geneem.

sie oor n huis in dieselfde kompleks waar

hy woon, waar daar gesteelde goedere ge-

    s.

N verdere inligting het die polisie ook

op juweliersware by n Gold Coin-winkel in

    Brackenfell in die Fairbridge-winkelsen-

    trum beslag gel.

re by Cash Crusaders-winkels te gaan ver-

    koop.

nHele reeks klagte is teen die ses verdag-

tes aanhangig gemaak. Dt sluit in huis-

    Goedere

Die gesteelde goedere sluit in verskeie

    motorfiets-bykomstighede, skootreke-

    naars, selfone, juweliersware vanwisselen-

steel is in huisbrake in Ionastraat, Bellvil-

    le.

Nimb s di TVs is glo aan Nigerirs ver-

    koop.

    by komplekse in Durbanville, Brackenfell

    is sers. Eldin Siegers.

Die polisie vra dat slagoffers van diefstal

en huisbraak, veral waar daar by komplek-

konsert in perfekte weer by die Liqui-

    Fruit-amfiteater in die Paarl plaasvind.

Die konsert word deur die drie Tygers

    aangebied: TygerBurger, Radio Tygerberg

    en Tygervallei-sentrum.

Die vier kunstenaars wat die aand gaan

optree, spog elk met n unieke sangstem:

Claire Johnston, Elvis Blue, Jannie Mool-

    man en Zanne Stapelberg.

Di vier sal gewilde Kersliedere en n paar

    klassieke treffers sing, insluitendStilleNag,

Somer-Kersfees, Jerusalem, Joy to the World

    en Little drummer boy.

    optree.

Zanne Stapelberg, een van Suid-Afrika se

suksesvolste opera-sangeres, is reeds die af-

gelope twee jaar betrokke by die konsert.

TygerBurger het haar n paar vrae gevra:

    1. Jy het al by die Klassieke Kersfees-

konsert opgetree. Wat maak die konsert

    vir jou spesiaal?

Ekwas verlede jaar ook deel van Klassie-

ke Kersfees. Die atmosfeer daardie aand het

my heeljaar bygebly.

Ek het heeltyd, terwyl ek so

oor die honderde mense uitgekyk het, hoen-

    dervleis gehad.

konsert gehou. Altyd n vreugde. Jannie het

    n regte ernstige tenoorstem.Hy is n gebore

sanger.

jaarsdagviering. Ek en Elvis het Barcelona

    van FreddieMercury enMontserrat Caballe

gesing.

    saamsing.

Ek kan nie wag nie. Ek het groot bewon-

    deringvirhaar talent enverhoogpersoonlik-

    heid.

    4. Wat is jou gunsteling-Kersfeestradi-

    sie?

    Kersfeesete en persente oopmaak saam

    met my familie op Oukersaand.

    5. Wat kan mense Sondagaand verwag

    by die konsert?

    Baie bekende Kersmusiek, grootste ope-

    ra-nommers en n paar verrassings!

Kaartjies is nog beskikbaar by www.culti-

    varia.com of bel 021 872 9754.

    maak 16:00 oop.

    Bins are weapons of crime.

This is according to an alert sent out by

    the Table View Neighbourhood Watch

    (TVNW).

In the alert, they explained that crimi-

nals use the black bins, provided to resi-

dents by the city, as stepladders to climb

    over walls.

They also use the bins to hide in while

waiting for an opportunity to break into a

    property.

According to the TVNW, the bins are

used to hide stolen items and as an indica-

tion of yourmovements. They explain that

a bin left out early in the morning or the

night before could suggest that the home

    owner is away.

Similarly, abin left out formore thanone

night, sends the message that the owner

may not have been home and the house is

    possibly vacant.

Bins also attract vagrants and theTVNW

has recorded a significant drop in the

number of vagrants in streets who do not

put their bins out the night before collec-

    tion day.

The TVNWpoints out that the content of

residential bins, like old clothing, are

sometimes used as stock for informal trad-

ing and taxi ranks and open public spaces.

Scrap metal in the form of items like old

appliances are also attracting illegal scrap

metal dealers, according to the TVNW,

who buy the metal from vagrants.

Residents can help the situation by try-

ing to put their bins out only in the official

time of rubbish collection, which is 06:00

    to 23:00.

TVNW suggests donating any items that

still have life to charity instead of leav-

    ing them in bins.

They also ask residents not to give food

and other items to vagrants as the TVNW

says this encourages vagrants to return to

    the area.

A Chinese national has been sentenced af-

ter he was found to be in possession of ille-

    gal ivory in Montague Gardens.

Qi Lu was found guilty in the Cape Town

Magistrates Court recently, on charges of

possession of illegal ivory and dealing in

    ivory.

According to SAPS, SARS K9 were busy

with a routine inspection at Time Freight

    Courier Services on 29February 2012,when

a dog reacted to some of the boxes which

    were found to contain ivory.

A search warrant was obtained for Unit

    C7, Spearhead Business Park, Freedom

    Way,MontagueGardens and 35-year-old Lu

was arrested after he was found with ivory

    to the value of R12 615 083.

A followupwas conducted at a curio shop

in Cape Town city centre and ivory to the

value of R513 201 was confiscated.

Lu has been sentenced to a fine of R1m

and 10 years imprisonment, suspended for

5 years. The processed value of the ivory is

R21m and was forfeited to the state.

    The Western Cape SAPS Management

states that the sentencing of the accuser

sends out a strong message to criminals

that SAPS will not tolerate this crime.

  • 6 TYGERBURGER Milnerton Woensdag, 27 November 2013NUUS

With the silly season on its way, the Table

    View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) has

put together a list of crime tips to help keep

    local residents safe.

Crime inyourarea is on the increase, and

SAPS resources are stretched to capacity

which means the situation is unlikely going

to rectify itself, says Gemma Redelinghuys

    from the TVNW.

Just a very small effort on your part can

play a massive and vital role in alleviating

the current crime problem, she says.

Residents are advised to be aware of their

    surroundings and report suspicious behav-

iour. Tied to this, residents should make an

    effort to know their neighbours.

They are also encouraged to not hire peo-

ple off the streets for housework or garden-

    ing. TheTVNWrecommendusing awell rec-

ommended worker and keeping a copy of

their ID document to have them police

    cleared.

Redelinghuys says you can contact the po-

lice or Global Intelligence on 021 557 8669 to

    have this done.

She points out that 77 % of all house rob-

beries are due to inside information.

The TVNW asks residents to report street

lights that are out to the City of Cape Town

on 0860 103 089. A dark street makes it easi-

er for criminals to roam undetected, Rede-

    linghuys says.

Residents are also requested to only put

their bins out in themorning on rubbish col-

lection day as leaving them out the night be-

fore invites vagrants into the area.

Not only do these vagrants often leave a

mess but they are also well known to be in-

formants for house burglars and robbers,

Redelinghuys says, adding: Also dont ad-

vertise you just bought a new flat screen TV

by leaving the box outside. Rather cut it up

and place it inside your bin.

Residents are encouraged to clean rubbish

or litter in their driveway or near their front

door. According to the TVNW, such items in

front of your house have been identified as

a possible sign to see if there is any activity

    at the residence.

This also applies to mail, pamphlets and

newspapers in yourmail box. Empty it as of-

ten as you possible, Redelinghuys suggests.

It is important tomake sure that your hou-

se number is easily identifiable in the case

of an emergency and if you have a security

alarm, make sure you use it.

Redelinghuys says: Most of the burgla-

ries currently taking place are during the

early hours of the morning, (midnight to

05:00) while the owners are at home sleeping

as they often have not armed the doors and

    windows.

Residents are also encouraged to double

check that garage doors and security gates

    are closed.

    bestuurslede, wat verhoorafwag-

    tend is vir ernstige misdade

    soos moord, gewapende roof,

    verkragting en huisbraak.

Nou het hier ook n bom

    gebars deurdat die minister van

    polisie vir Robert McBride wil

    aanstel as uitvoerende direkteur

    van hierdie klagtedirektoraat.

    Robert McBride het n donker

    verlede wat aan ons almal

    bekend is.

    Die vraag ontstaan: Wil jy

    nog betrokke raak by misdaad-

    voorkoming, aangesien ek nie

oortuig is wie vriend of vyand

    is nie?

It is all good and well to

    support proudly SA products

and Im all for it, because I am

    a proud South African (We

    must all buy proudly SA,

    TygerBurger, 13 November). In

    reality though, the bus stops

    with our government, who

    allows cheap imports into our

    country. This robs the hard

    working, honest SA business

    men and women from an

    income. People who cannot

    even afford the basic necessi-

ties, will opt for the cheaper

    products.

    Also, all the foreigners who

    enter our country and open

    small businesses all over, do

not pay business taxes, but we

are squeezed to pay tax. It is

    time for government to take

    some responsibility for their

    decisions.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Almal se plig

    om geweld

    aan temeld

Met die veldtog van 16 dae van aktivisme

teen geweld teen vroue en kinders wat

vandeesweek afgeskop het, val die kollig

    weer skerp op hierdie Suid-Afrikaanse

    tragedie.

Met ons land se verkragtingskoers per

capita die hoogste in die wreld, en

    daaglikse berigte van moorde, gesinsge-

weld en ander wandade teenoor vroue en

kinders, moet n mens vra of 16 dae

    regtig genoeg is?

dalk net inslag vind. Hoeveel keer hoor

n mens van gesinsgeweld en gevalle van

    teistering en verkragting wat nooit

aangemeld word nie? Te veel om op te

    noem.

    hierdie aangeleentheid polisieer.

    Meld sulke gevalle onverwyld aan.

Werk saam om hierdie slagoffers te

verlos van n lewe van vrees. Onthou,

hulle word ontneem van hul basiese

menseregte. Dit ons ander se plig om op

te tree en hulle te help.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    S

    piking peoples drinks is

    becoming an increasingly

    dangerous trend all over

the city, especially in the time

leading up to the festive season,

    between November and Decem-

    ber, when matric farewells, of-

    fice parties and celebratory end-

    of-the-school-year house parties

    are abundant.

    So says JohnBushwell CEOof

    Rape Wise, who receives ap-

    proximately 400 cases of drink

    spiking per year.

More often than not this prac-

    tice leads to associated crimes

    like rape, robbery, illegal pro-

duction of porn or even assault.

    Moreover it happens across the

    board.

Not only young teens are vic-

tims. People of all ages and gen-

    ders including divorcees are

targeted. In the case of women

    the associated crime is usually

rape whereas with men it is

    mostly robbery, he says.

    Date rape

    Recently the lives of two

    young women from the north-

    ern suburbs were dramatically

    altered after they too became

victims of a date rape, which re-

    sulted from drinks that were

spiked at a popular pub in Dur-

    banville.

Fearful even to tell their par-

ents, and ashamed of the stigma

    attached to rape, the young

women in their late teens and

early 20s didnt report the rapes

to the police, with the result that

    the perpetrators are still walk-

    ing free.

    The two women visited a

    well-known pub and while hav-

ing a drink were joined by two

young guys who looked like the

regular boys next door, says an

    anonymous source close to the

    women.

    Although the two guys were

not known to the girls theywere

    not strangers they were the

same age, they spoke the same

    language (Afrikaans), and they

    lived in the same neighbour-

hood and shared the same inter-

    ests. Nothing about their behav-

    iour warned of stranger dan-

ger and accepting an offer of a

    drink seemed perfectly nor-

    mal, the source told Tyger-

    Burger.

    According to her the women

dont recall much and have only

    vaguememories of having sexu-

    al intercourse.

    Only hours later they real-

ised that their drinks had been

    roofied andtheir first

thought was not to tell anybody.

In case of pregnancy they have

taken the morning after pill but

have put the thought of STDs

    andHIV aside, she says adding

that the incident has left her dis-

    turbed and worried.

    Both these girls refuse to

speak to their parents or any

    other caregiving adults about

    their ordeal because they have

    repeatedly been warned not to

    accept drinks from strangers.

    They have been conditioned, in-

to believing that by accepting a

drink you are asking to be

    raped, the source said.

    They were possibly repeat-

edly raped by both the men yet

    their upbringing dictates that

they are unable to share this

with their parents. Do we tell

our sons and daughters that sex

    without consent, no matter the

    circumstances, is always rape

or do we continue the myth that

lead our children to believe that

    certain behaviour invites

    rape?

She continues to say that both

    theseyoungwomenare current-

ly trying to deal with this trau-

matic ordeal all on their own

    because, if their parents found

out, they would kill them, the

    young women apparently be-

    lieve.

    These are educated parents

    and children with professions

that society looks up to, its wor-

    rying but evenworse the rapists

are still out there and they still

look like the nice middle class

    boy next door, she says.

    Communication

    According to Bushwell the

    majority of these victims dont

    come out simply because they

    feel stupid, sometimes errone-

    ously thinking that they drank

    too much.

    Parents have to be pro-active

in their education. Open up the

    channels of communication

    with your children. Warn them

of the dangers but also make it

clear to them that you are their

parent and are there to support

them, no matter what they did,

wrong or not, or what the conse-

    quences were, he says.

    According to Bushwell this

    pro-active approach is impera-

tive, as victims of rape that

    might have been exposed toHIV

only have 72 hours to have PEP

    (Post Exposure Prophylaxis)

    treatment.

    Furthermore, it is critical

for these women to receive psy-

    chological counselling as vic-

tims of these kinds of rapes are

    very difficult to counsel, be-

    cause they have almost nomem-

ory of the rape. The questions

    and images often haunt them

    forever how many men raped

    me?Whatwas done tome?What

    else could have happened?

    Untreated, victims of this

type of rape often become sui-

    cidal, promiscuous or self-

    harming, Bushwell says.

    Drugs

    There are four major drugs

    available to spike drinks with.

    They are Rohypnol

    (roofies), Ketamine Hydro-

    chloride an anaesthetic barbitu-

    rate, and GHB, a veterinarian

    tranquilliser.

    The most common and cheap-

    est drugused for spikinghowev-

    er, according to Bushwell, are

    common eye drops.

    The perpetrator would usu-

ally drop about eight drops into

your drink and after only hav-

ing one beer, it feels as if you

had 10. In a normal soft drink it

    wont have any effect, whereas

alcohol is a catalyst and the

    stronger the alcohol the strong-

er the result. Symptoms such as

    slurred speech, vomiting and

    suppressed breathing come on

very fast, and you pass out.

    Bushwell says, it could even

kill a person if too much of the

    drug, containingBenzalkonium

    Chloride and Naphazoline Ni-

trite, which is highly soluble in

    alcohol is administered.
