Hoe kry mens 70 liter petrol in ’n tenkmet ’n kapasiteit van 50 liter? Dit isdie vraag wat ’n man van Monte Vis-

ta mee worstel.Jan Viljoen het vroeër vanjaar vir hom

’n nuwe Renault Sandero gekoop en elkekeer by dieselfde vulstasie, Shell Fairview,volgemaak. “Elke keer het ek vir omtrentso 70 liter petrol betaal. In die ses maandewat ek die motortjie het, het ek net by tweegeleenthede by ’n ander vulstasie ingegooien groot was my verbasing toe die tenk net46 liter kon vat,” sê Viljoen.Om uit te vind hoekom hy dan elke keer

vir byna 20 liter petrol meer betaal, het hydie eienaar van die vulstasie, Jannie Dippe-naar, gaan sien. “Eers wou hy my oortuigdat die motor wel 70 liter kan vat. Ek bel toetwee plekke wat Renaults verkoop en hulleverseker my dat my tenk niks meer as 50 li-ter kan vat nie.”

Koste aangegaanDippenaar sê op sy beurt hy het alles in

sy vermoë gedoen om Viljoen tegemoet tekom. “Ek het self weer koste aangegaan omtoleransie-toetse op my pompe laat doen endit is binne die wettige toleransie-vlakke.Ons het ooreengekom dat wanneer hy weervolmaak, hy my eers moet bel. Hy het onge-lukkig nie die kilometerlesing neergeskryfsodat hy kon uitvind of hy die voordeel vandie bykomende petrol gekry het nie. Ook hethy nie sy tenk laat toets om te kyk of dit wel’n 50 liter-tenk is nie,” sê Dippenaar.Dippenaar sê omdat hy die bewering ern-

stig opgeneem het, het hy ondersoek inge-stel. “Ek het gevind dat Viljoen oor ’n perio-de vanviermaande byvyf verskillende pom-pe en verskillende petroljoggies petrolingegooi het. Wat hy beweer is dat twee vanmy ou en drie van my nuwe pompe ’n afwy-

king van 14 liter het. Dit is baie, soveel soos28 persent,” reken Dippenaar.Om nog verder seker te maak sy pompe is

“Toe hulle daar was, het ek Viljoen gena-der en gevra dat hy by is as die toetse gedoenword, maar hy het nie opgedaag nie.”Volgens Dippenaar is hy bitter teleurge-

steld in Viljoen. “Ek het alles gedoen om tebewys dat my kant skoon is. Hy het belowehy sal sy tenk laat toets,maar het nou eerderna die koerant gegaan.”

K9 unit catches two burglars red handed

Air Force Base Ysterplaat recently host-ed the South African Air Force YoungFalcons’ annual Wings Parade.The 60 students who took part in this

programme were treated to a flight withvarious light aircraft, two of the top stu-dents flying in the L39 Albatross Jet. Itwas a day to remember for the students,the majority of whom had never flownbefore.The Young Falcon programme runs

over a period of two years for grade 10and 11 learners.The students are given formativeavia-

tion, military and virtual training andthen the training culminates in the ob-

taining of “wings” and a certificate as anindication of the students’ passion andknowledge for aviation.In his speech, the acting officer com-

manding of Air Force Base Ysterplaat,Lieutenant Colonel AJ de Castro, ex-pressed his wish to see more membersof this programme joining the aviationfraternity and in particular the SouthAfrican Air Force.He thanked thepilots from thevarious

An advert in newspapers inviting com-ment on the sale of land owned by theCity of CapeTown, has thrown the cat

amongst the pigeons in Goodwood.Rumours that the advert means the land

will be used for low cost housing have beenspreading, but Goodwood councillor CecileJanse van Rensburg says this is not true.

“It is a statutory process to obtain com-ment prior to the proposed sale of public as-sets. Approval is also to be sought from oth-er governance structures as per the assettransfer regulations. The advert is not atender document, the city has policies andprocedures in place – in other words whenthe city proposes that city-owned land besold via tender, there is a process that is fol-lowed,” explains Janse van Rensburg aftershe was overwhelmed with calls from an-gry residents fearing low cost housing willdecrease the value of their properties.

She said when under-utilised city-ownedland is identified (often by members of thecommunity with the request that the landbe developed), the city’s property manage-ment department engages relevant line de-partments to confirm whether or not suchland is needed for municipal purposes. “If

all line department indicate their approvalfor such a proposal, the department willseek “in principle approval” from councilto proceed with a public participation pro-gramme.

“This effectively means the communityat large is invited to participate in the deci-sion-making. This is a legal requirement.

“Only when the council has decided inprinciple that land may be disposed of, willit be referred to the property developmentsectionwhowill proceedbymeans of publicauction or public tender. Such public auc-tion will stipulate the proposed zoning andbroad development parameters as well asthe fact that the successful tenderer will beresponsible for all applicable legal proce-dures in order to obtain the correct zoningand development rights. It is not only pre-mature, but in fact incorrect to draw con-clusions or make reference to ‘low costhousing being built in Goodwood’,” saidJanse van Rensburg.

She added she has always trusted theGoodwood community to “own, love andimprove their neighbourhood” and shewasglad to see the community supporting oneanother.

“However, I am concerned and disap-pointed when actions are taken and infor-mation is spread that is not based on facts.”

Goodwood police secured another convic-tion for murder, a year after the incidenttook place.

On Monday 4 November 2013 at 19:58,the 39-year-old man stabbed a friend du-ring an argument at the Shell Petrol stati-on in Hugo Street Goodwood. The decea-sed died of one stab wound to the chest.It is alleged they argued about money.

The suspect then fled the scene.Two days later Detective Constable

Denver Horne, the investigating officer,arrested the suspect in Epping Avenue,Elsies River.

During the court proceedings Hornesuccessfully opposed bail and secured asentence of ten years in the Bellville Com-mercial Court.

Recent issueswith security at retail centresacross the country were at the heart of anincident where a mentally disabled manwas manhandled in the parking area at theN1 City mall.

Mohammed Gordon (25) was waiting forhis parents in the N1 City Mall parking lotwhen he was mistaken for a car thief. Secu-rity and police pulled him from the car andallegedly manhandled him. His father, Jo-hardien, is suing the police, the securitycompany, the head of security, aswell as N1City.

N1 City confirmed the incident.“N1 CityMall management confirms that

onFriday 07November 2014 at around 15:00,

parking security detected suspicious activi-ty in the parking area. Themale in questionwas approached and questioned by N1 Ci-ty’s securitymanager. During this time, theGoodwood police appeared on the scene andthe investigation was handed over to theauthorities.

“Since the incident,N1CityMall hasbeenmadeaware of the fact that themale inques-tionwas not a potential security risk for thecentre or its patrons,” says Natalie Dippe-naar, marketing manager.

She says further: “In light of recent secu-rity issues within retail centres across thecountry, N1 City Mall places a strong em-phasis on safety and security at the mall.We take a pro-active approach to our securi-ty and make a consistent effort to pre-emptsecurity incidents.”

suburban streets.It’s the 21st SPCA MySchool MyVillage

MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon.The 4,5 km charity dog-walk takes place

at the Cape Academy of Maths and Scienceon the Corner of Firgrove Way and Spaans-gemacht River Road, Constantia, at 09:00.Soli Philander will be the MC for the day.

This hugely popular event supports thework of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA(CoGH SPCA) and last year saw 1600 wal-kers and 1100 dogs strut their stuff in theSociety’s aid.

“The Wiggle Waggle is possibly the mostloved event on the Cape of Good HopeSPCA’s fundraising calendar – and peopletravel from far and wide just to take part,”said event organiser, Juan August.

All funds raised from entries will go di-rectly to helping the SPCA prevent animalcruelty during the upcoming festive sea-son.

Well, two of the Cape Town band’s mem-bers have anyway. Saxophonist Nick Beckerand frontman Riaan Smit recently returnedfrom a whirlwind American adventure.

The duo went overseas to build connecti-ons, experience the music industries and“see if the grass is really greener”.

“There’s just a lot more grass, I think,” Ri-aan says.

They busked wherever they could andtried to take in the lifestyle in New York, SanDiego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and NewOrleans, amongst other places.

Price of a beerA highlight for Nick and Riaan was wor-

kingwithAlanSanderson, aGrammyawardwinning producer and engineer known forhis work with the likes of B.B King and TheRolling Stones, and all it cost them was a Ta-fel Lager.

“He really loves Namibia and beer and re-ally wanted to meet us,” explains Riaan, whois a Namibian.

Despite only having 14 shows lined upwhen they went over, the two ended up play-ing more than 50 across the states.

Riaan says musicians in America earn thesame as South Africans, there’s simply moreplaces they can play, and some even earn adecent living from busking, which adds vi-brancy and culture to cities overseas.

“Busking isn’t considered begging, it’s aprofession,” Nick adds.

Riaan says the biggest lesson he learnt inAmerica is that the talent in South Africais on the same level, if not better. “We’re stillgrowing,” he says and points out that SouthAfrica still needs to create a creative com-munity to help grow local industries. “Weneed to water our own grass.”

Crimson House will open the tap whenthey perform with a host of South Africanblues acts at theTable Mountain Blues Sum-mit at Hillcrest Quarry on Saturday 6 andSunday 7 December.

Spirituality and inclusionRiaan says it’s the spirituality and inclusi-

on of blues that draws him to the genre. “Youdon’t need to be good to do it; you just needto be real”.

“The foundations of the blues have beenlaid down for the last 100 years,” Nick saysand says it’s a common denominator for ma-ny musicians, but still something they canmake their own.

“I’ve had instances where I open my eyeson stage after a song and I couldn’t believewhere I’m standing, because I completelywent into another world, and that for me isspecial.”

Because of its rich history, Riaan saysblues is a difficult genre to pin point. Usingthe Blues Summit as an example, he sayseveryone has a different interpretation andstyle of playing.

Beaufort Wes se Beautiful Woordehet van Gert ’n huishoudelike naam gemaaken hy’t ’n getroue groep volgelinge gekry watsy loopbaan met belangstelling volg.

“Ek reken die sukses wat ons tot dusvergehad het, is dat ons met o.10- en o.11-spannebegin het. Toutrek neem drie jaar voordat jyregtig begin presteer.

“Die sport verg baie dissipline, toewydingen deursettingsvermoë, maar die heel be-langrikste is dat dit baie spanwerk vereis,”verduidelik Deon.

Eerste jaarIn hul eerste jaar het die o.10’s se 220 kg-

span reeds hul Westelike Provinsie- A-kleu-re verwerf. Verlede jaar het die o.10’s se230 kg- en 280 kg-spanne ook hul provinsialekleure gekry.

recent South African wrestling champi-onship in Pretoria, he returned home withtwo medals.“I won a silver medal for Greek-Roman,

and gold in freestyle. It was a great feelingto win these two medals, I really workedhard for this championship,” said Johan.Johan and his brother Rymert got invol-

ved in the sport as youngsters throughtheir father Ryno, who also wrestled.“My journey started back in 2005 in the

u-9 ranks. Since then I just workedmywaythrough to where I am today. Last year Iwas chosen to compete in the Africa CadetAmateur Wrestling Championship. I won

a silver medal in my weight category.“Currently I wrestle at the Brackenfell

StrandWrestling Club, but that is about tochange. I have a great opportunity to goand study civil engineering in Perth, Aus-tralia next year.“I am definitely going to join a club over

there. I would love to compete at the Com-monwealth Games one day.“I want to thank everyone involved for
