During the search of the premises, metro po-lice discovered the drugs buried under-ground in a plastic container.“A third suspect, a South African woman,

was arrested after she was found with thedrugs. The total street value of the drugs isR1.2 million, which is regarded as a signifi-cant blow to the drug trade,” said Traut.“These arrestswere the result of very good

cooperation between the city and the policeand I want to commend all officers in-volved,” said Smith.“They removed a significant quantity of

drugs from the streets and provided a timelyreminder to those in the drug trade that theyneed to watch their step.”He adds last year the city focussed more

on lower level users, but this year were “bi-ting further up the food chain”.ParklandsNeighbourhoodWatch chaiper-

son, Bjorn Harrison Sagar, said the drugproblem in Parklands is “extensive”.“The only way we can fight this is to in-

form the authorities, which you can also doanonymously,” he says.

Ready for action: With the festive season rapidly approaching, some MelkbosstrandNeighbourhood Watch (MNW) members equipped themselves with the necessary knowledgeto sharpen their skills and awareness when it comes to fire safety.

“I know now what they mean by a secondchildhood,” laughed Archbishop EmeritusDesmondTutu ashe struggled to get onto thepodium to lead the tenth annual TygerbergChildren’s Hospital thanksgiving service.

Staff and patients of the hospital attendedthe interfaith service at the Tygerberg DisaHall on Thursday to pray together with theReverend Mpho Tutu, Rabbi Malcolm Mati-tiani and Moulana Nazeem Jongie, afterwhich Tutu delivered his message.

“I have been thinking what it must be liketo be God,” he told the children and staff.

“And I thought, siestog, armeGod. Hemustspend a lot of time crying. But He looks andlooks again and peers at Tygerberg Hospitaland He sees all the beautiful things that arehappening here. And all the beautiful thingsthat all of you do, and He smiles.”

At times whispering into the microphone, one could hear a pin drop in the full hall.

The service was followed by a candlelighting ceremony for the children at thehospital.

Tighter control over dogs on Melkbos-strandBeach are likely to come into ef-fect before month end.

This follows Melkbosstrand Beach awar-ded pilot Blue Flag status this summer.Pilot BlueFlag beaches are considered for

full Blue Flag status if certain criteria aremet within a specified period of time. The dog-control measures set out in the

city’s Beach Management Policy, were re-cently opened for public comment. The beach has been demarcated into six

sections, eachwith it’s owndog-walking cri-teria.From 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue dogs will

be allowed to bewalked on a leash, and from5th Avenue to 11th Avenue (between 1 De-cember and 31 March), no dogs will be allo-wed on the pathways. From 11th Avenue to 19th Avenue (bet-

ween 1 May and 31 October), dogs will beallowed on a leash, and from 1 Novemberto 30 April no dogs will be allowed between09:00 and 19:00.From19thAvenue to Soutrivier, dogswill

be allowed on a leash and from Soutrivierto Strand Road, free running dogs will be

allowed at all times. Finally, from Strand Road to Edward

Crescent, dogs can run free from 09:00 to17:00 and dogs on a leash from 06:00 to 09:00and from 17:00 to 20:00.This final point has been decided on to al-

low horses access to the beach front from06:00 to 09:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00.According to Melkbosstrand Ratepayers

Association exco member John Taylor, the-se measures will go a long way to establis-hing Melkbosstrand as a Blue Flag Beach. The Blue Flag is an international accredi-

tation awarded to beaches that display ex-cellence through meeting 33 criteria cove-ring four categories: environmental educa-tion and information; water quality;environmental management; and safetyand Services.“We generally accept this proposed poli-

cy,” says Taylor, who is also the chairper-son of the Community Police Forum (CPF).“The CPF likewise generally supports

anymeasures that will helpminimise nega-tive incidents and attacks by dogs,” he adds. The City states that they recognise the

fact that animals may negatively impact onother beach user’ recreational experience. At the same time they knowmany people

love walking their dogs on the beach, so inmanaging the times they are trying to plea-se everyone.

The “kind-hearted” Monica Mendela hasbeen applauded by the City of Cape Townfor being a “wonderful, amazing lady”.She is a security guard at theMyCiTi sta-

tion in Wood Drive.Mendela gave a 14-year-old girl R20 to lo-

ad onto her myconnect card so that shecould get to school recently, despite the factthat she herself had only R50 left for theweek. The learner only realised that she had no

money left on her myconnect card for thebus after her father had dropped her off atWood station in Table View. She was apparently in a complete state

and close to tears when Mendela approa-ched her to see if she could help. The learner’s mother and a local resi-

dents posted this tale of Mendela’s nobleand selfless act on their Facebook page andit subsequently came to the city’s attentionas well.Brett Herron, city mayco member for

Transport, said they are extremely proudof Mendela.“Her kindness is a reminder that it is pos-

sible to create a caring city and to buildcommunities where we share a commonhumanity with one another. The city willbe celebratingMendela’s selfless act on ourFacebook page and Twitter account. Wedeem it very important to acknowledge ourresidents’ generosity in times when many

people have lost faith in humanity,” saidHerron.Mendela is a parent herself and lives in

Khayelitsha. She is employed by Enforce, one of the partners of the joint venture thatis contracted to manage the MyCiTi stati-ons.Mendela will soon receive an Excellence

Award – the first to be awarded by Enforceto an employee.

The city’s draft Coastal Management Pro-gramme, developed, in part, to give effect tothe Integrated Coastal Management Policy,is ready for comment.Council adopted the policy - a first for a

South African municipality, in September.Thepolicy seeks tomitigate the risks posed

by climate change, and optimise the socio-economic and environmental potential thecoastline offers to residents of Cape Town. The city is the largest coastal metro in

South Africa with 307 km of coastline. It is arguably its greatest socio-economic

and environmental asset and it provides acritical support base to residents.Interested parties haveuntil 3December to

comment on the proposed programme.

City coastal plan ready for public comment

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

“We would like to thank the traffic depart-ment ofMilnerton for acting on our requestto investigate or have a traffic officer moni-toring the accidents and near-accidentshappening weekly in the mornings at theT-junction of Tygervalley Road and Conter-manskloof Road,” says Barend Esterhuizensarcastically.Esterhuizen and his daughter saw an ac-

cident at this T-junction after informing thetraffic department “numerous times” ofreckless driving at this junction.“We have not seen a traffic officer at this

junction. Ever. Possible reasons are thatthey’re busy somewhere else, they’re on teatime or it’s too early for them,” he raves.TygerBurger askedCapeTown traffic ser-

vices spokesperson Richard Coleman howbest to lodge a complaint.“I don’t think people realise what we are

responsible for. We help with traffic enfor-cement, respond to complaints, assist atfilm shoots, process vehicle registrationsand conducts tests for drivers and learnerdrivers, to name but a few,” says Coleman. The department is also understaffed.“We have about five teams per day bet-

ween Vanguard Drive and Hout Bay. Theseteams consist of about four officers, so wehave just 20 people to cover thatwhole area!We cover massive areas for the amount ofpeople we have.”Colemanadds, however, that every single

complaint will be taken seriously if it wasmade through the right channels.“It’s better to use email, then there is a

paper trail. It becomes a C3 notification, which means we will reply to the complai-nant, the complaint will be attended to andwithin seven days we will reply to the com-plainant again. The public can, of course, also phone the call centre at 107, but thenthere will be no correspondence,” he says. The perception that traffic officers only

work towards the end of themonth to reachtheir quotas was rebuffed by Coleman.“Wedon’t havequotas.A lot of people also

think you’re working for your bonus, butthis is false. Otherwise I’ll get a bonus everymonth. There are so many places you cansit and just write! But that’s not what we’rethere for.”With the festive season just around the

corner, Colemanurged the public to be vigi-lant when driving.Pedestrian safety and drunk driving will

be high on the list of priorities, with thenumber of road blocks soon set to increasedramatically.Coleman emphasises the importance of

wearing seatbelts.“From a special enforcement side, in Ja-

nuary 80 people were fined for not wearingtheir seatbelts. In February 172 and in Sep-tember 1 569 people. We cannot emphasisethe importance of buckling up enough.”V For any traffic related complaint, Coleman volunteered to channel complaints to the relevant authority. Mail him at [email protected].

Sea level rise risks to Table View identified

Infrastructure along the Table View coastline is under pressure. PHOTO: SEEFF BLOUBERGSTRAND

The Table View beachfront road infrastruc-ture has been identified as a risk to in-creased urban pressure and rising sea lev-els, according to the City of Cape Town’s SeaLevel Rise Assessment ReportNow the city is looking at ways to accom-

modate the existing and future traffic de-mands on the Table View beachfront area. One possibility for protecting infrastruc-

ture would be to reconfigure the currentroad infrastructure to allow for the widen-ing of the existing dune corridor. It is fore-seen that this would serve as a first level ofprotection against sea level rise.“Sucha reconfigurationwould also enable

increased economic and social opportuni-ties for this area and for the broadermetro,”says mayco member for Energy, Environ-mental and Spatial Planning, Johan van derMerwe.“A conceptual transport study was there-

fore undertaken to see whether a proposedreconfiguration would in fact result in a suf-ficientmeasure of protection against sea lev-el rise. The study successfully identified anumber of feasible options for reconfiguring

the transport infrastructurewithin thearea. With the highest rate of urbanisation in thecountry, we certainly cannot rest on our lau-rels if wewant to create a financially and en-vironmentally sustainable future.”After public consultation, a preferred

transport option will be identified and in-cluded as part of a broader developmentframework for the Table View beachfront asa local area planning priority for the Blaau-wberg District. The development framework must pre-

pareaholistic plan for theTableViewbeach-front area that responds to the issues ofcoastal management, sea level rise, built en-vironment pressures, traffic management, public amenity and economic development,by giving direction to future developmentthat will guide both public and private deci-sion-making and investment.During the preliminary investigations, it

apparently became clear that the issueswhich the development framework soughtto resolvewere intimately linked to the roadinfrastructure of the area. The city now urges residents to give input

on the various transport options that havebeen identified in the draft report. They will be presenting the outcomes of

the study at a public workshop on 27Novem-ber from 19:00 to 21:00 at the BloubergstrandLibrary Hall in Andrew Foster Road.

New intensive care unit for children opens inNetcare Blaauwberg Hospital

Anewpaediatric intensive care unit (PICU),which has been developed in response to a growing need

for quality privatemedical services for children in the Sunningdale area of Cape Town, has opened its

doors at theNetcareBlaauwbergHospital.

Dirk Truter, general manager of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital points out that the medical care of

children differs from adult care in some important respects because children often show different

clinical signs to adults, therefore treatment that would be appropriate in an adult may be

inappropriateandevendamaging toa child.

The new ICU consists of two paediatric ICU beds, each in its own cubicle within the paediatric ward.

The state-of-the-art amenities have been purpose-designed for maximum efficiency and infection

control. The cutting-edge equipment includes the latest in ventilator technology, including non-

invasiveventilation.

The new facility has the latest equipment at hand and can also call on outstanding expertise. The unit

is thereforeable todealwithall paediatricemergencies.

Threepaediatricianswill be supporting the unit, namelyDr ColinGrindlay, Dr ZakiyyaOmarjee andDr

Tevia Zieff. They will be backed up by paediatric gastroenterologist, Dr Shrish Budree; paediatric

pulmonologist,DrGrahamPoole; andpaediatric surgeon,ProfessorDaniel Sidler.

The venue,of course, is spectacular, withamazing views of Paarl Valleyand all the surrounding moun-tains, but then we also had themost wonderful weather toaccompany the concert – luckilyfor us, the wind died down.It was really a tremendous

SLICE OF LIFE

In alle gevalle moet medemense natuurlik in ag geneem word, of dit nou naaanleiding van honde of kinders of grootmense is. Groter verdraagsaamheid salook help. - Anti-selfsug

- Beskaafd

Bejaardeswil vrylik rondloop.

- Anoniem

MilnertonPlayerswill behostingauditionsfor their next production at the playhouseon Sunday 23 November.Directed by Johann Van der Merwe,

Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey willbe staged at the Playhouse in Pienaar Roadin March 2015.The play, adapted from its original set-

ting of a council housing estate in southLondon, plays off in a run-down block offlats in Rugby, Cape Town. Five actorsmake up the cast, three male and two fema-le and performers must be prepared to usecoarse language. All five characters are victims of their

circumstances; and as the pathos of theplay unfolds, the audience almost gets thesense of viewing reality television, withthese five hapless characters as the prota-gonists.However, thegeneral feeling is thatof light-heartedness and the dialogue isscattered with laugh lines. The character of Sandra is an attractive,

spunky barmaid, roughly 37 years old. Theactress playing Sandra will be required toshow cleavage in certain scenes.Jamie, Sandra’s son, is a school-going

teen, a bit of a nerd, but good-looking.The character has a crush on Ste, a hand-

some sportsman, also still at school, withbuilt up anger and frustration.Brief nudity is required for both charac-

ters in one scene, but will be approacheddelicately.Leah is slightly older than the boys and

has been expelled from various schools. The character is promiscuous and doesdrugs. The role of Sandra’s lover, Tony is amedi-

um one. Tony is 13 years younger thanSandra and although the character is a bitof a loser, he sees himself as a stud, but sur-prises by demonstrating insight and sym-pathy at times.V Auditions will start at 13:30 for 14:00. roir. The berries and bunches are large andthe grapes are late ripening, all of which fitin perfectly with the existing varietals onthe farm and the harvesting schedule. I alsoknow and love the varietal as it produces ar-omatic white wines which can handle woodand give you a beautifully powerful wine.”According to Johan Wiese of Voor Groen-

bergNurseries nearWellington, whowas re-sponsible for the propagation of this brand-new varietal from the original plant materi-al, it’s always a huge privilege to be part ofa totally new venture like this.“It’s good for South Africa to bring in and

test new varietals and in that way broadenour cultivar choices, and we look forwardwith excitement to seeing the eventual re-sults in the bottle,” he says.Guests had the opportunity to taste four

of Sardinia’s highest rated Vermentinowines to introduce South African guests tothe potential of this varietal. The tastingwasled by Fabbro, who travelled to South Africaespecially for the event.V Ayama is situated in the Voor Perdeberg region andis a mere 30 minutes’ drive from Durbanville.

Despite never having sailed, a group ofEerste River locals working as volun-teers at one of the world’s greatest oce-

an races say the experience is memorable. The group of about ten volunteers from

the areahave for the past twoweeks – duringthe Cape Town stopover of the Volvo OceanRace – looked after the crews and boats, andinteracted with curious visitors who fre-quent the pop-up centres located at the V&AWaterfront.Devon Park-resident Annalene Hollaway,

who also works as a volunteer at the EersteRiver Multi Purpose Centre, said she enjoyseach moment.

Friendly people“We meet a lot of people here, take them

to the boat so that they can get an experienceof what it is like for the sailors,” she said.Hollaway works at the Cross Section – an

exhibition areawhere people can climb ontoa yacht to see how the craft operates. She enjoysmeeting lots of friendly people.“The fact that I met IanWalker and his pa-

rents, that was the highlight,” she added.Walker is the skipper of Team Abu Dhabi,

the team who arrived first on the first legof the race from Alicante to Cape Town.Benn Carey, volunteer coordinator in the

Volvo Ocean Race’s operational team, saidbeing a coordinator is the best job.“The friendship and the bond that you

make over here in 19 days is that you’remee-ting the volunteers who are giving up theirtime for this race, without them this wouldnot happen,” the formervolunteer fromLon-don, England, said.He said he understands what it means to

give up one’s time.“I have had a fantastic experience here

with these volunteers.“It is humbling, it is a privilege for me to

meet people who come from the backgroundthat these people come from,” he said.

Learning experienceJuleen van Rooyen from Electric City,

who helps out at the exhibition centre, saidshe learned a lot while volunteering.“This was a learning experience for me.

I never had an interest in sailing, but nowI can actually explain to people how the boatworks. This was a nice experience.“It is my first time that I am involved in

this project, but it is absolutely amazing,”van Rooyen said.Edward Davids from Stratford Green said

this year was the second time he’s bee invol-ved.“Iwas also involved in the project in 2012,”

he said.“Volunteering is one of the city’smain pri-

orities, where we can get volunteers invol-ved, to give the opportunity to people to ex-perience new things in the city,” he said.He said he wants to encourage others, es-

pecially young people, to get involved.“By volunteering, it also leads to employ-

ment. There is not just one event the cityhosts, there are many and there is a lot onecan learn,” said Davids, who works as a hallattendant at the Kleinvlei Community Hall.Mawabo Siwela from Wesbank helps out

at the dome, an area where they display mo-vies about the race.“I enjoy it. I love the whole event.“I met most of the participants, they are

very friendly and it is fun speaking to them.“One can network a lot. and we also learn

some of the foreign languages,” he said smi-ling.Tonight the fleet will set sail for Abu Dha-

Dit was my eer-ste keer in ’n plakkerskamp.

As they sing in “Desert Rose”, Crimson Hou-sehasbeen“Hereand thereandbackagain”.

Well, two of the Cape Town band’s mem-bers have anyway. Saxophonist Nick Beckerand frontman Riaan Smit recently returnedfrom a whirlwind American adventure.

The duo went overseas to build connecti-ons, experience the music industries and“see if the grass is really greener”.

“There’s just a lot more grass, I think,” Ri-aan says.

They busked wherever they could andtried to take in the lifestyle in New York, SanDiego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and NewOrleans, amongst other places.

Price of a beerA highlight for Nick and Riaan was wor-

kingwithAlanSanderson, aGrammyawardwinning producer and engineer known forhis work with the likes of B.B King and TheRolling Stones, and all it cost them was a Ta-fel Lager.

“He really loves Namibia and beer and re-ally wanted to meet us,” explains Riaan, whois a Namibian.

Despite only having 14 shows lined upwhen they went over, the two ended up play-ing more than 50 across the states.

Riaan says musicians in America earn thesame as South Africans, there’s simply moreplaces they can play, and some even earn adecent living from busking, which adds vi-brancy and culture to cities overseas.

“Busking isn’t considered begging, it’s aprofession,” Nick adds.

Riaan says the biggest lesson he learnt inAmerica is that the talent in South Africais on the same level, if not better. “We’re stillgrowing,” he says and points out that SouthAfrica still needs to create a creative com-munity to help grow local industries. “Weneed to water our own grass.”

Crimson House will open the tap whenthey perform with a host of South Africanblues acts at theTable Mountain Blues Sum-mit at Hillcrest Quarry on Saturday 6 andSunday 7 December.

Spirituality and inclusionRiaan says it’s the spirituality and inclusi-

on of blues that draws him to the genre. “Youdon’t need to be good to do it; you just needto be real”.

“The foundations of the blues have beenlaid down for the last 100 years,” Nick saysand says it’s a common denominator for ma-ny musicians, but still something they canmake their own.

“I’ve had instances where I open my eyeson stage after a song and I couldn’t believewhere I’m standing, because I completelywent into another world, and that for me isspecial.”

Because of its rich history, Riaan saysblues is a difficult genre to pin point. Usingthe Blues Summit as an example, he sayseveryone has a different interpretation andstyle of playing.

“Each performance is different,” Nickadds, pointing out that a song’s interpretati-on depends on the environment and themood of the artists and audience.V Visit www.bluesfest.co.za for more informationabout the Blues Summit.V Nick and Riaan visited the Orange Couch to chatabout the band’ s plans and give readers a taste oftheir performance at the Table Mountain Blues Summit. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their interview and performance.

WIN! WIN! WIN!V Two readers can each win double full weekend passes to attend the Table Mountain Blues Summit. Visitwww.tygerburger.co.za to enter.

What’s On | Wat’s Waar

MARITA MEYER

Hy lei ’n eenvoudige lewe: “Krismis gaanek altyd na my ma toe in Beaufort-Wes ennuwejaar probeer ek by die see wees.”

Dat sy optrede vanaand (19 November) enmôreaand by Die Boer iets spesiaals salwees, is verseker.

VlokNel, SA se eie Dylan, insolodebuut by Die Boer

WPKRIEKET: MILNERTON EN NOORDELIKESGOODWOOD GOED GEPLAAS VIR SEGES

Durbies val vas teen UKSAREL BURGER

The fourth annual Melkbos NeighbourhoodWatchGolf Day recently took place at theAt-lantic Beach Golf Club, and has apparentlyset the standard for future golf days. The fundraising team managed to raise a

whopping R84 000 for the MelkbosNeighbourhoodWatch, which is R20 000mo-re than last year. The day attracted a fairly large field of pla-

yers with each and every hole being sponso-redby local businesses, aswell as companiesfrom outside of Melkbosstrand. All these sponsors went out of their way

tomake it a special day for the golfers bypro-viding delicious refreshments, which weremost welcomed on what turned out to be aglorious andperfectwindless summer’s day.The evening prize giving and auction din-

ner also turned out to be a great hit.The funds will be used to purchase equip-

ment and to improve the service and effici-ency of the watch, with a direct focus on thesafety of theMelkbosstrand community andfighting crime in the area.
