als je ambitie hebt, van competitie houdt en de beste wilt zijn,

moet je niet bang zijn om in de schijnwerpers te staan en bereid

zijn een teleurstelling te incasseren. er kan er immers maar één

winnen.

Het overkwam Eindhoven een paar jaar terug. We grepen nét naast de

titel World Design Capital. Jammer. Toch was er reden voor tevredenheid.

Het was een leerzaam traject. Bovendien lieten we talloze wereldsteden

achter ons en maakten we wereldwijd een prima indruk. Gelukkig weten

we in Eindhoven ook wat winnen is: in 2011 ‘World Smartest Region’,

in 2013 ‘Most Inventive Region’ en dit jaar nog de ‘Best economically

performing city’ in ons land. Daar zit toch wel muziek in.

Dan nu die 28 deelnemers die dit jaar met elkaar de strijd aangaan.

Presteren onder druk, ten overstaan van een deskundig publiek en een

uiterst kritische jury: je moet het maar kunnen. En willen. Daarom alleen

al verdienen zij ons respect. Als ik de balans opmaak, zie ik alleen maar

pluspunten: een wereldvermaard concours met voortreffelijke kandida-

ten, dat plaatsvindt in ons prachtige Muziekgebouw Frits Philips

Eindhoven, met zijn uitmuntende akoestiek. Graag een roffelend applaus!

if you are ambitious, relish competition and want to be the

best, you can’t be scared of standing in the spotlight and must

be willing to deal with disappointment. after all, there can be

only one winner.

It happened to Eindhoven a few years ago. We just missed out on

the title of World Design Capital. Such a shame. Yet there was still

cause for satisfaction. It was an educational process. Furthermore, we

finished above numerous other cities of the world and we made a great

impression worldwide. Luckily we do know what winning feels like in

Eindhoven: in 2011 ‘World’s Smartest Region’, in 2013 ‘Most Inventive

Region’ and this year even the ‘Best economically performing city’ in

our country. That’s very promising.

And now it’s the turn of the 28 participants competing against each

other this year. Performing under pressure, standing in front of an

audience of experts and an extremely critical jury: it’s no easy task.

And for this alone they deserve our respect. If I weigh things up, I see

nothing but positives: a world-renowned competition with outstanding

candidates, taking place in our beautiful Muziekgebouw Frits Philips,

with its excellent acoustics. Please, give them a round of applause!

welkom bij TROMP 2014! waarschijnlijk staat u die dit leest op

het punt een van de concerten te bezoeken. Misschien bent u

nog bezig te kiezen welke het zal worden. in elk geval gaat u

naar slagwerk luisteren.

Maar u beseft vast niet dat u zelf ook percussionist bent, altijd al

geweest. Sta even stil en luister naar uw eigen lichaam. Da-doem,

da-doem, da-doem. Nauwelijks hoorbaar maar met een vinger aan

de pols altijd voelbaar, uw eigen hart dat het ritme van het leven slaat.

Ook muziek heeft zijn eigen heartbeat, en dat is percussie, altijd

aanwezig, altijd voelbaar, ook als je er niet speciaal naar luistert.

Bij TROMP is percussie tien dagen lang wel overweldigend hoorbaar.

In de gedreven uitvoeringen van de concoursdeelnemers, jonge

topmusici van over de hele wereld. In het enthousiasme waarmee

honderden schoolkinderen laten zien wat een eerste kennismaking

met slagwerk kan betekenen.

En natuurlijk staat percussie centraal in de talloze concerten en

concertjes van het festivalprogramma.

Wees welkom, bezoeker, om bij TROMP een vinger aan de pols van deze

muziek te houden. Ik hoop dat uw hart van enthousiasme zal overslaan.

welkom to TROMP 2014! as you are reading this, you are

probably on the verge of attending one of the concerts.

Perhaps you are still trying to choose which one. in any case,

you will be listening to percussion.

But you do not realise that you yourself are a percussionist, always

have been. Just stand still and listen to your own body. Da-doem,

da-doem, da-doem. Hardly audible but with a finger to the pulse,

always palpable, your own heart beating out the rhythm of life.

Music also has its own heartbeat; percussion. Always present, always

palpable, even when you are not particularly listening for it.

Percussion is overwhelmingly audible during the ten days of TROMP.

In the passionate performances of the competition participants, young

musicians from all over the world. In the enthusiasm with which one

hundred school children show what a first encounter with percussion

can mean.

And of course, percussion is in the spotlight of the numerous

concerts and performances included in the festival programme.

So welcome, visitor. Hold a finger to the pulse of this music during

TROMP. I hope that your heart will skip a beat with enthusiasm.

Lucas Vis is een veelgevraagd specialist op het gebied

van hedendaagse muziek. Hij werkte met beroemde

componisten en dirigeerde talrijke wereldpremières.

Vis dirigeerde verscheidene binnen- en buitenlandse

orkesten en was van 1979 tot 1982 vaste dirigent van

Het Brabants Orkest. Van 1988 tot 1996 was hij chef-

dirigent van het Noordhollands Philharmonisch in Haar-

lem. Aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, waarvan

hij van 1998 tot 2005 artistiek directeur was, doceert

hij orkestdirectie. Lucas Vis fungeert geregeld als jurylid.

Lucas Vis is a highly sought after specialist in the field

of contemporary music. He has worked with famous

composers and has conducted numerous world premières

with both national and international orchestras. He was

permanent conductor for Het Brabants Orkest from 1979

to 1982 and was head conductor of the Noordhollands

Philharmonic in Haarlem from 1988 to 1996. Vis teaches

orchestral direction at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam,

where he held the position of artistic director from 1998 to

2005. Lucas Vis can often be found judging competitions.

Christian Dierstein, oud-student van Bernhard Wulff

en Gaston Sylvestre, won prestigieuze concoursen en

ontwikkelde zich in een glansrijke carrière tot één van

de meest interessante artiesten in de hedendaagse

muziek. Hij is percussionist bij het ensemble recherche,

vormde het Trio Accanto en gaf soloconcerten in heel

Europa in de Rising Stars serie. Zijn talrijke opnames

zijn vele malen bekroond. Dierstein doceert percussie

en nieuwe kamermuziek aan de Hochschule für Musik

in Basel en geeft masterclasses over de hele wereld.

As a former student with Bernhard Wulff and Gaston

Sylvestre, Christian Dierstein won numerous competitions

and has established himself among the most interesting

performers in the contemporary music of our time. He is the

percussionist of the ensemble recherche, formed the Trio

Accanto and has given solo concerts throughout Europe in

the Rising Stars series. His numerous recordings have been

awarded many times. Dierstein teaches percussion and new

chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel and

gives master classes worldwide.

De legendarische Russische percussionist Mark

Pekarsky speelde als student al met het Opera-

Symfonieorkest van Radio & TV Moskou, en later bij

het Moskouse ensemble voor oude muziek Madrigal.

In 1976 richtte hij Ruslands eerste percussie-ensemble

op en wist daarmee componisten tot ruim 200 nieuwe

composities voor slagwerk te inspireren: ‘Een ware

katalysator voor de Russische componeeractiviteit’,

schreef de Berlijnse Tagesspiegel. Pekarsky startte in

2000 ook het beroemde Pekarsky Percussion project,

gewijd aan de problematiek van het moderne

slagwerkrepertoire. Mark Pekarsky is professor aan

het conservatorium van Moskou sinds 1997.

Mark Pekarsky is a legendary Russian percussionist. As a

student, he performed with the Opera-Symphony Orchestra

of Radio & TV Moscow, later joined the Moscow Ensemble

of Early Music Madrigal. In 1976 he founded the first

Russian percussion ensemble, with a choice of 200 scores

composed for the ensemble by several generations of

Russian composers. ‘A catalyst for Russian composers’

creative activity’, according to The Berlin Newspaper

Tagesspiegel. Pekarksy also started the famous Pekarsky

Percussion Project devoted to the problems of modern

percussion repertoire in 2000. Since 1997 Mark Pekarsky is

a professor at the Moscow Conservatory.

aRnOld MaRinissen The neTheRlands

Arnold Marinissen is naast gelauwerd slagwerker

ook componist en bedient zich daarbij graag van stem

en het veelzijdige slagwerkinstrumentarium. Hij

componeerde voor o.a. Asko|Schönberg, het

Nederlands Kamerkoor, Ives Ensemble, Orgelpark, Club

Guy & Roni en de Nederlandse film Bernard. Nieuw

werk werd recentelijk uitgevoerd door onder meer

Slagwerk Den Haag, Silbersee, het Insomnia Percussion

Trio en door het duo Niek KleinJan/Konstantyn Napolov

in de NJO Muziekzomer. Een directe uitwisseling met

musici vindt hij inspirerend. Zo is hij leider van de

slagwerkafdeling van het Conservatorium van

Amsterdam en ensemble Lunatree.

Arnold Marinissen is a praised percussionist, who as a

composer likes to write for voices and the multi-coloured

family of percussion instruments. He composed for

Asko|Schönberg, Nederlands Kamerkoor, Ives Ensemble,

Orgelpark, Club Guy & Roni and the Dutch film Bernard

among others. New work was recently performed by

Slagwerk Den Haag, Silbersee, the Insomnia Percussion Trio

and by the percussion duo Niek KleinJan/Konstantyn Napolov

in the NJO Music Summer. A direct contact and exchange

with performers inspires Marinissen. He is study leader of

the percussion department of the Conservatorium van

Momoko Kamiya verwierf internationale bekendheid

toen ze in 1995 het internationale marimbaconcours in

Luxemburg won. De Toyota Foundation koos haar als

één van The Top Ten Young Artists Today en in 2005

ontving ze de Azalea Cultural Prize van Kawasaki City.

Ze speelt met grote orkesten als het Radio Symphonie

Orkest van Luxemburg, het Litouws Kamerorkest en

het Boekarest Radio Orkest. Van haar vijf cd’s won

‘Marimba Cocktail’ in 1996 de Best Recording Prize.

Momoko Kamiya jureerde bij internationale concoursen

in tien landen.

Momoko Kamiya received international recognition

when she won the Luxembourg International Marimba

competition in 1995. She was chosen by the Toyota Founda-

tion as one of The Top Ten Young Artists Today and in 2005

she received the Azalea Cultural Prize of Kawasaki City. She

performs with major orchestras such as Radio Symphony

Orchestra Luxembourg, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra,

and the Bucharest Radio Orchestra. Marimba Cocktail,

one of her five recordings, won the best recording prize in

1996. Momoko Kamiya served on the juries of international

competitions in ten countries.

nancy zelTsMan uniTed sTaTes

Nancy Zeltsman is een toonaangevende marimba-

artieste, studiomuzikante, docent, auteur en festival-

directeur. Ze bracht meer dan 125 solo- en kamer-

muziekwerken voor marimba in première, waaronder

composities van Paul Simon, Michael Tilson Thomas,

Gunther Schuller, Carla Bley en Louis Andriessen. Onder

meer met haar lesmethode Intermediate Masterworks

for Marimba: 24 marimba solo’s, heeft ze prominent

bijgedragen aan het marimba-onderwijs en -repertoire.

Zeltsman doceert marimba aan het Berklee College

of Music, is regelmatig gastdocente aan het

Conservatorium van Amsterdam en voorzitter van de

slagwerkafdeling van het Conservatorium in Boston.

Nancy Zeltsman is a leading marimba performer, recording

artist, teacher, author and festival director. She has premiered

over 125 solo and chamber marimba works including

compositions by Paul Simon, Michael Tilson Thomas,

Gunther Schuller, Carla Bley, and Louis Andriessen. She

has made an evident contribution to marimba pedagogy

and repertoire with her method Intermediate Masterworks

for Marimba: 24 marimba solos, among others. Zeltsman

is a prominent marimba teacher at the Berklee College of

Music, regular guest professor at the Conservatorium van

Amsterdam and Chair of the Percussion Department at

The Boston Conservatory.

Leerlingen van het Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in

Eindhoven kiezen tijdens de Finale hun eigen favoriet

voor De Annelie prijs. Zij vormen samen de jeugdjury.

Ze volgen de deelnemers vanaf het begin van het

concours en schrijven voor iedere kandidaat een

juryrapport. Dit zijn de leden van de jeugdjury van

TROMP 2014: drummer Sjoerd Bakker (15), klarinettist

Frank Buisman (17), celliste Rebekka Groeneveld (16),

zangeres Marleen Ruigrok (15), pianiste Anne

Thomassen (17) en Tom Veltman (17) die onder andere

zingt, piano speelt én componeert.

Deskundige muziekrecensenten van de binnen- en

buitenlandse pers beoordelen tijdens de Finale welke

slagwerker in hun ogen het meest getalenteerd is.

Expert music critics from the national and international

press will judge which percussionist they think is the most

talented during the Finale.

Students from the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in Eindhoven

will choose their own winner during the TROMP Finale. Six

students will form the youth jury. They will follow the

participants throughout the competition and will write a jury

report for each candidate. The members of the youth jury

Bryce Dessner is drie seizoenen lang als composer in

residence verbonden aan Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.

In Music for wood and strings, waarvan Sõ Percussion

de Europese première brengt op de TROMP Opening

Night, laat Dessner ons horen dat hij op volstrekt eigen

wijze voor slagwerk weet te schrijven. TROMP

Miniature voor marimba en crotales componeerde hij

als verplicht werk voor de negen halvefinalisten. Een

echte ‘Dessner’ met stuwende, syncopische ritmes en

een bezwerend einde, waarin de hoofdrol wordt

opgeëist door de indringende klank van de crotales.

Louis Andriessen zet zijn 75ste verjaardag luister bij

met het speciaal voor de TROMP Finale geschreven

Tapdance, een concert geïnspireerd op de bigband- en

tapdancecultuur uit de jaren ‘20 van de vorige eeuw.

Het ongeveer 15 minuten durende stuk bestaat uit

slechts één deel, maar daarbinnen focuste Andriessen

op drie secties. ‘De eerste is puur ritmisch, met

Charleston-patronen. De tweede, een toccata voor

marimbasolo, introduceert toonhoogte. In het langzame

slotgedeelte speelt de solist alleen pauken’, aldus

Andriessen. Dat belooft een zinderende finale te

worden, waarin de drie finalisten bij uitstek kunnen

laten horen wat zij waard zijn.

Bryce Dessner has been linked to Muziekgebouw

Eindhoven as composer in residence for three seasons.

In Music for wood and strings, the European première

of which will be performed by Sõ Percussion during the

TROMP Opening Night, Dessner shows us that he knows

exactly how to write for percussion in his very own way.

He composed TROMP Miniature for marimba and crotales

as a compulsory piece for the nine semi-finalists. A true

'Dessner' piece with driving, syncopated rhythms and a

mesmerizing end, in which the leading role is claimed by

the unique sound of the crotales.

TaPdance | lOuis andRiessen

Louis Andriessen adds extra lustre to his 75th birthday with

Tapdance, a concert written especially for the TROMP Finale

and inspired by the big band and tap dancing culture of the

nineteen twenties. Lasting around 15 minutes, the piece

consists of only one part, yet within this Andriessen focuses

on three sections. ‘The first is purely rhythmical, with

Charleston patterns. The second, a toccata for marimba

solo, introduces pitch. The slow closing section consists

of a soloist playing only timpani’, said Andriessen about it.

That promises to be a scintillating finale, in which the three

finalists really show us what they’re made of.

BRÜCKEN | Music für Köln plaats rondom heden-

daagse muziek. In deze vijfde editie is ruim aandacht

Op zoek naar toptalent uit heel Latijns-Amerika reisden Arnold Marinissen, Tatiana Koleva en Alexandre Esperet naar São Paulo. TROMP komt jonge talenten niet alleen op het spoor, maar helpt hen ook bij hun verdere ontwikkeling.

TROMP de Repertoire days. deelnemers over de hele wereld krijgen de

mogelijkheid om masterclasses te volgen bij gerenommeerde slagwerkers

en samen te studeren aan het verplichte repertoire voor de competitie en

ander solorepertoire. sinds de start van de Repertoire days in 2010 zijn de

masterclasses wereldwijd uitgebreid met edities in onder andere boston,

shanghai, Moskou en Tokio.

Afgelopen september begon TROMP met de eerste editie van de Repertoire Days in

São Paulo aan een nieuw avontuur. Op zoek naar toptalent uit heel Latijns-Amerika

reisden masters Arnold Marinissen (jurylid TROMP), Tatiana Koleva (mallet-specialiste

en kenner van het verplichte Nederlandse concoursrepertoire voor marimba) en

Alexandre Esperet (winnaar TROMP 2012) naar de EMESP, de Escola de Música

do Estado de São Paulo ‘Tom Jobim’.

Van de 35 deelnemers kregen er zes actief les in individuele masterclasses. Onder

de deelnemers waren naast Brazilianen ook studenten uit Ecuador, Chili en Peru.

Zij toonden zich zeer geïnteresseerd en gaven aan veel nieuwe inzichten te hebben

gekregen. Vooral de grote concentratie viel op. Projectmanager van TROMP

Percussion Eindhoven Arthur van der Drift was erbij. ‘Onder de ramen van het

gebouw was het maandelijkse sambafestival losgebarsten dat behoorlijk doorklonk in

de zaal’, vertelt hij. ‘Maar de studenten noch Arnold Marinissen lieten zich erdoor van

de wijs brengen. Zelfs niet bij het afspelen van Morton Feldmans heel ingetogen ‘King

of Denmark’ of bij de uitvoering door Arnold van ‘Hit me with your rhythm stick’ van

Chiel Meijering voor snaredrum.’

Een paar deelnemers toonden hun interesse om in Nederland te gaan studeren. Door

de Repertoire Days komt TROMP jonge talenten dus niet alleen op het spoor, maar

helpt hen ook bij verdere ontwikkeling. ‘En met de lijst van ruim 150 werken voor

setup die Arnold Marinissen behandelde, kunnen zij nog lange tijd uit de voeten’,

aldus Arthur van der Drift.

TROMP organises the Repertoire days in preparation for the international

percussion competition. Participants from all over the world are given the

opportunity to follow master classes with renowned percussionists and to study

together for the competition’s compulsory repertoire and other solo repertoire.

since the start of the Repertoire days in 2010 the master classes have expanded

worldwide with editions in cities such as boston, shanghai, Moscow and Tokyo.

TROMP embarked on a new adventure last September with the first edition of the

Repertoire Days in São Paulo. Searching for top-class talented musicians from all over Latin

America, masters Arnold Marinissen (TROMP jury member), Tatiana Koleva (mallet-specialist

and expert in the compulsory Dutch competition repertoire for marimba) and Alexandre

Esperet (winner TROMP 2012) travelled to the EMESP, the Escola de Música do Estado de

São Paulo ‘Tom Jobim’.

Of the 35 participants, six were given active lessons in individual master classes. Among

the participants were students from Brazil, Ecuador, Chilli and Peru. They demonstrated a

great deal of interest and gained many new insights. Particularly striking was their intense

concentration. Project manager of TROMP Percussion Eindhoven Arthur van der Drift was

also present. ‘The monthly samba festival had erupted outside the windows of the building

and the sound penetrated the hall’, he explains. ‘But neither the students nor Arnold

Marinissen allowed this to distract them. Not even when playing Morton Feldman’s very

subdued ‘King of Denmark’ or during Arnold’s performance of ‘Hit me with your rhythm

stick’ by Chiel Meijering for snare drum.’

A few participants expressed interest in studying in the Netherlands. Through the Repertoire

Days, TROMP therefore not only discovers young talented musicians, but also helps them to

develop further. ‘And the list of around 150 pieces for setup arranged by Arnold Marinissen

will keep them busy for a long time’, according to Arthur van der Drift.

Rondom Garrett Mendelow, in 2012 tweedeprijswinnaar

van TROMP, verzamelt zich een slagwerkensemble van

zes mede-laureaten om samen het veeleisende

Pléïades van Iannis Xenakis uit 1978 te spelen. Een

moderne klassieker, genoemd naar het sterrenbeeld

Pleiaden, voor zes percussionisten en een enorm

instrumentarium waaronder de door Xenakis zelf

ontworpen ‘sixxen’ (‘zes’ plus ‘Xen’). De groep startte

met succes een crowdfundingcampagne via Kickstarter

om het concert, met ondersteuning van TROMP en

Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, mogelijk te maken.

Garrett Mendelow, second prize winner of TROMP 2012,

is surrounded by six fellow laureates to perform the

strenuous piece Pleiades by Iannis Xenakis from 1978.

The piece, which Xenakis named after the constellation

Pleiades, has become a modern classic composed for

six percussionists and a huge collection of instruments,

including the by Xenakis designed ‘sixxen‘ (‘six’ plus ‘Xen’).

The group successfully started a crowd funding campaign

via Kickstarter to realize the concert supported by TROMP

and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.

Jeff Mills opent met Sõ Percussion en het Residentie Orkest TROMP Percussion

Eindhoven 2014. Mills, ook bekend als ‘The Wizard’, kent wereldwijde faam als

grensverleggend techno-dj, producer en grondlegger van de Detroit techno-sound.

Zijn 70 minuten durende orkestwerk Where Light Ends wordt slechts eenmalig

uitgevoerd in Nederland, met de meester zelf achter de draaitafel. Voor de pauze

brengt de New Yorkse slagwerkgroep Sõ Percussion de Nederlandse première van

Music for Wood and Strings van National-gitarist Bryce Dessner, composer-

in-residence van Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Ook klinkt Man made van David Lang:

een ‘soloconcert’ voor slagwerkgroep en orkest dat afgelopen mei in London in

première ging. Na afloop geeft Lady Aïda een afterparty met Alexandre Esperet,

winnaar TROMP 2012.

Jeff Mills baseerde het project Where Light Ends op de eerste ruimtereis van

Dr. Mamoru Mohri met de Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. In samenwerking met

de Franse componist Sylvain Griotto weet hij op unieke wijze techno te versmelten

met symfonische muziek. Wat weinigen weten is dat Mills ook drummer is.

TROMP Percussion Eindhoven koppelt hem daarom aan het New Yorkse klassieke

slagwerkensemble Sõ Percussion, dat ook graag de grenzen en raakvlakken met

elektronische muziek opzoekt.

Jeff Mills, the Residentie Orkest (The Hague Philharmonic) and Sõ Percussion open TROMP

Percussion Eindhoven 2014. Jeff ‘The Wizard’ Mills is worldwide renowned as a pioneering

techno-dj, producer and founder of the Detroit techno sound. His 70-minute orchestral work

Where Light Ends is only once performed in The Netherlands, featuring Mills on stage.

Before the intermission, the New York percussion ensemble Sõ Percussion performs the

first Dutch performance of Music for Wood and Strings, composed by National’s Bryce

Dessner, composer-in-residence at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Additionally Man made by

David Lang is performed: a ‘solo concert’ for percussion and orchestra that premiered in

London last May. After the performances, the Dutch techno-dj Lady Aïda hosts an after

party featuring Alexandre Esperet, winner TROMP 2012.

Where Light Ends was inspired by the first Space flight of Dr. Mamoru Mohri in 1992 on the

Space Shuttle Endeavour. In collaboration with French composer Sylvain Griotto, Jeff Mills

manages to merge techno with symphonic music. Only few people know that Mills is also

a drummer. TROMP Percussion Eindhoven therefore invited the New York percussion

ensemble Sõ Percussion to join on stage, which also has a great love for electronic music.

In de houtwerkplaats van ontwerper Piet Hein Eek geeft

het New Yorkse Sõ Percussion samen met TROMP

2012-laureaten Alexandre Esperet en Garrett Mendelow

een performance met het toepasselijke werk Timber

(timmerhout) op zes houten balken. Michael Gordon

schreef het werk oorspronkelijk voor Slagwerk Den

Haag. Die nemen vervolgens het ‘stokje’ over van Sõ

Percussion in de nieuwe productie HEX van Dyane

Donck met mezzosopraan Els Mondelaers uit de stal

van Silbersee (ex vocaallab). Daarin bespeelt Slagwerk

Den Haag naast de reguliere percussie-instrumenten,

ook speel- en kraakdozen, wijnglazen en gevonden

voorwerpen.

HEX is een co-productie van November Music, Slagwerk

Den Haag, Intro in Situ en stichting Mono. De compositie is

gefinancierd door Fonds Podiumkunsten.

The New York ensemble Sõ Percussion gather with TROMP

2012 laureates Alexandre Esperet and Garrett Mendelow

at interior designer Piet Hein Eek’s wood workshop to

perform Michael Gordon’s piece Timber for six wooden

beams. Michael Gordon originally composed the piece for

the Dutch percussion ensemble Slagwerk Den Haag, from

which 3 percussionists will take up the baton with a new

production: HEX by composer Dyane Donck, featuring

mezzo-soprano Els Mondelaers from Silbersee (ex vocaal-

lab). For this theatrical piece, the percussionists will not only

perform on regular percussion instruments, they will also

use musical and creaking boxes alongside wine

glasses and the lost and found.

HEX is a co-production of November Music, Slagwerk Den Haag,

Intro in Situ and the Mono Foundation. The composition is

supported by the Performing Arts Fund NL.

slagwerktalenten, maar ook jonge componisten. Alle inzendingen worden tijdens dit

Dutch music students. The competition stimulates not only young percussion talents, but

Louis Andriessen heeft zijn 75ste verjaardag luister bij gezet met het speciaal voor deze

Finale geschreven Tapdance, een concert geïnspireerd op de bigband- en tapdancecultuur

uit de jaren ‘20 van de vorige eeuw. Daarnaast speelt elke finalist een solowerk naar eigen

keuze. Een opwindend spektakel dat een uitdaging voor de finalisten en een belevenis voor

de luisteraars vormt. Aan het einde van de middag worden de winnaars van TROMP 2014

bekendgemaakt.

Louis Andriessen celebrates his 75th birthday with a new work which is specially composed for

this Finale. Tapdance is a concerto inspired by the bigband and tapdance scene around the 20’s. In

addition, each finalist perfoms a solo of their choice. An exciting spectacle as a challenge for the

finalists and an unique experience for the audience. At the end of the afternoon the winners of

TROMP 2014 will be announced.

TROMP Percussion eindhoven maakt zich sterk voor de ontwikkeling van

slagwerkers, repertoire en nieuwe aanwas van talenten in de dop.

Met de Repertoire days gaat TROMP actief op zoek naar nieuwe toptalenten en

geeft hen masterclasses in het brede slagwerkcanon, met speciale aandacht voor de

voorbereiding van het verplichte repertoire tijdens het concours. Zie ook pag. 32.

Met de compositiewedstrijd op donderdag 13 november leert de nieuwe generatie

componisten van de Nederlandse conservatoria werken te schrijven voor slagwerk.

Daarnaast begeeft TROMP zich binnen een netwerk van slagwerkdocenten die de

weg voor jonge talenten naar het conservatorium voorbereiden. Zo geeft garrett

Mendelow, tweedeprijswinnaar TROMP 2012, op donderdag 6 november een

masterclass in de aula van de muziekschool van het CKE in Eindhoven.

Het zeer groot TROMP zelfgemaakte schoolplein Orkest is een project voor

alle groepen binnen het basisonderwijs, inclusief de kleutergroepen. Ten slotte

komt iedereen bij elkaar in een ‘schoolpleinconcert’. Er wordt op van alles muziek

gemaakt: cementkuipen, gestemde steigerpijpen, gestemde bierflessen, shakers,

klapkokers en klankplanken.

Trompbot. Middelbare en VMBO-leerlingen gingen een uitdagende opdracht aan:

‘Design en bouw een drumrobot en programmeer een performance met samenspel.’

TROMP is committed to the development of percussionists, repertoire and

recruitment of young talent.

With the Repertoire days, TROMP is actively looking for new talent and provides them

with master classes in the percussion repertoire, with special attention to the required

repertoire during the competition. Read the article on page 32.

The composition competition on November 13th teaches a new generation of

composers of the Dutch conservatories to compose percussion scores. Read more on

page 43.

Additionally TROMP is part of a network of percussion teachers who prepare young

talents for the conservatory. Contributing for example with a master class by garrett

Mendelow, second prize winner of TROMP 2012, in the auditorium of the CKE music

school in Eindhoven during TROMP on November 6th.

The TROMP homemade schoolyard Orchestra is a project aimed at all groups of

primary education. In conclusion, all the students come together in a ‘schoolyard concert'.

They’ll make music on all kinds of things; cement tubs, tuned scaffolding pipes, tuned beer

bottles, shakers, tubes and boards.

Trompbot. College and VMBO students accepted an impressive challenge: ‘Construct

a drum robot, compose a rhythm for multiple percussion instruments and programme a

need a great deal of support. Why not join the

Friends of TROMP? For just € 15 a year (€ 25 with a

partner) you can become a supporter of our circle

of Friends. The annual contributions and any other

financial support given by the Friends provide a

significant boost to the Eindhoven music scene. Yet

a friendship works both ways. The benefits of beco-

ming a Friend include discount on entrance tickets

for the concerts and events during TROMP and an
