teken van liefde voor de eigen cultuur.De Nederlandse taal zit vol met unieke woorden en vreemde fenomenen die een connectie hebben met de cultuur en het dagelijks leven. Dit boekje is een poging om deze fenomenen te

laten zien in woord en beeld.

Is there a people more sarcastic and full of self-mockery than the Dutch? The Dutch soberness expresses itself regularly in the form of tough, mocking statements about themselves. Even though this might seem offensive to other cultures, this way of reflecting is a

sign of love for their own culture.The Dutch language is full of unique words and strange phenomena that are connected to the culture and daily life. This booklet is an

attempt at showcasing these phenomena in images and words.

Shouting horn[shou-ting-horn] - A short tube in the form of a cone that ampli-fys your voice when you yell through it.

Kabouterpost[Ka-bou-ter-post] - Kleine envelopjes waar ze de cocaine in vouwen.

Gnome post[Gnome post] - The small envelopes where they put the cocaine in

Rookworst[Rook-worst] - Een halve worst die je bij een kledingwinkel kunt kopen.

Smoked sausage[Smoked-sau-sage] - Half of a sausage which you buy at a clothing store.

Stoephoer[Stoep-hoer] - Een prostituee die je op de stoep kunt oppikken.

Pavement whore[Pave-ment-whore] - A prostitute who you can pick up on the side-walk.

Plofkip[Plof-kip] - Een snelgroeiende kip die speciaal gefokt wordt voor de vleesproductie.

Plofchicken[Plof-chi-cken] - A fast growing chicken, bred for meat produc-tion.

Gabber[Ga-ber] - Een cultuurstroming waarbij mensen die met een kale kop en trainingspakken gingen hakken op feesten in de jaren 90.

Gabber[Ga-ber] - A cultural trend in which people with a bald head and a tracksuit are going to hakken (dance form) on parties in the 90.

Oliebollenkar[O-lie-bo-len-kar] - Een wagen waar ze gefrituurde bolletjes deeg (soms met rozijnen erin) verkopen.

Oilball car[Oil-boll-car] - A car/stand where they sell balls of fried dough (sometimes with raisins).

Strakstaan[Strak-staan] - De spanning in je lichaam en de grote ogen die optreden nadat je een XTC pil genomen hebt.

Taut[Taut] - The tension in your body and big eyes you will get after taking XTC.

Blikvanger[Blik-va-nger] - Een net langs de weg waar mensen (rijdend) hun afval in kunnen gooien.

Cancatcher[Can-cat-cher] - A net on the side of the road where people can throw their trash in (while driving)

Bakfiets[Bak-fiets] - Een fiets met twee of drie wielen en een grote bak voorop.

Binbicycle[Bin-bi-cy-cle] - A bicycle with two or three wheels and a big binat the front.

Haringhappen [Ha-ring-hap-pen] - Het nuttigen van een of meerdere haringen uit de hand waarbij de haring wordt vastgehouden aan de staart.

Herringbite[Her-ring-bite] - Eating one or more herrings from your hand while holding the fish at its tail.

Broodje gezond [Brood-je ge-zond] - Een belegd broodje dat door Nederlanders vaak bij de lunch gegeten wordt. Vaak is het belegd met kaas, ham, ei, sla, komkommer, tomaat en mayonnaise.

Sandwich healthy [Sand-wich heal-thy] - A populair Dutch sandwich. Often there’s cheese, ham, egg, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and mayonnaise on the sandwich.

Zwartwerker [Zwart-wer-ker] - Iemand die uit arbeid inkomsten verkrijgt en deze voor de belastingdienst verzwijgt.

Blackworker[Black-wor-ker] - Someone who receives an income without telling the tax authorities.

Plakje cake[Plak-je cake] - Een plakje cake met slagroom is een veelgebruikte traktatie op verjaardagen.

Slice of cake[Slice of cake] - In Holland you can expect to get a slice of cake with whipped cream on birthday parties.

Vierdaagse [Vier-daag-se] - Een evenement waarbij wandelaars vier dagen een bepaald aantal kilometers afleggen. Dit gebeurt in een zeer grote groep.

Fourdays[Four-days] - A big event where walkers from different parts of the country come together to walk a certain amount of kilometres in four days.

Quinoa-kutje[Qui-noa-kut-je] - Een meisje dat alleen maar superfoods eet en dit vaak deelt met de buitenwereld.

Quinoa-cunt[Qui-noa-cunt] - Girl who only eats superfoods. Often they post pictures of their food on the internet.

Een ommetje[Een om-me-tje] - Een kleine wandeling.

A ommetje[A om-me-tje] - A small walk.

Vouwfiets[Vouw-fiets] - Een fiets die ingeklapt kan worden tot een kleiner format.

Foldingbike

[Fol-ding-bike] - A bicycle that can be folded to a smaller size.

Flessenlikker[Fles-sen-lik-ker] - Een langwerpig voorwerp waarmee je de restanten van een dikkere vloeistof uit een fles kan schrapen.

Bottlelicker [Bo-ttle-li-cker] - An object with which you can scrape the rem-nants of a thick liquid from a bottle.

De Wallen[De wal-len] - Een gebied in Amsterdam dat vooral bekend staat om zijn raamprostitutie. Erg interessant voor toeristen, nauwelijks voor Nederlanders.

The Red Light District[The Red Light Dis-trict] - A part of Amsterdam that’s mostly known for its “window prostitution” (where the prostitutes stand in front of windows to show off the goods). Very interesting for tourists, but barely for Dutch people.

Hagelslag[Ha-gel-slag] - Kleine korrels die gebruikt worden als broodbeleg, die de rest van de wereld alleen als cakeversiering gebruikt. De meest gegeten variant is chocoladehagel, maar ook vruchtenhagel en anijshagel zijn populair.

Sprinkles[Sprin-kles] - Small grains used as sandwich filling, while the rest of the world only uses them as cake decoration. The most popular variant is chocolate sprinkles, but fruit sprinkles and anise sprinkles are also widespread.

Kaasschaaf[Kaas-schaaf] - Keukengerei bedoeld om dunne plakken kaas te kunnen schaven. Elk Nederlands huishouden heeft er een, en elk zelfrespecterend Nederlands huishouden heeft er meerdere.

Cheese knife[Cheese knife] - Kitchenware meant to make thin slices of cheese. Every Dutch household has one, and every self-respecting Dutch household has multiple.

Kuiltje jus[Kuil-tje jus] - Kuiltje in een gerecht waar de jus in wordt gegoten. Wordt voornamelijk gemaakt bij stamppot.

Gravy pit[Gra-vy pit] - A small pit in a dish to pour the gravy in. Is mostly used for Dutch “stamppot” (literally translated as “mash pot”).

Kut NS![Kut NS!] - De meest gehoorde zin op een willekeurig Nederlands treinstation. Klagen over de NS is een nationale sport, en dit komt vaak tot uiting in deze korte, efficiënte krachtterm.

Fucking Dutch Railways![Fuck-ing Dutch Rail-ways!] - The most popular sentence on any Dutch train station. Complaining about the Dutch Railways is a national sport, and it’s often expressed with this short and efficient expletive.

Sjoelen[Sjoe-len] - Gezelschapsspel waarbij men schijven in gleuven moet schuiven en daarmee zoveel mogelijk punten moet scoren. Ondanks het feit dat alleen je opa en oma nog een sjoelbak hebben, is er een verrassend aantal spelvariaties en zijn er jaarlijks wereldkampioenschappen.

Shuffleboard[Shuf-fle-board] - A game in which you score points by shoving disks into slots. Even though only your grandparents have a shuffleboard, there’s a surprising amount of variations and there are yearly world championships.

Snert[Snert] - Dikke erwtensoep die vooral veel in de winter wordt gegeten. Echte snert is zo dik dat het nauwelijks vloeibaar meer is.

Pea soup[Pea soup] - Thick pea soup that’s mostly eaten during winter. Real “snert” is so thick that it’s only barely liquid.

Stroopwafel[Stroop-wa-fel] - Een wafel die bestaat uit twee helften van een wafel met stroop ertussen. In Nederland universeel als heerlijk ervaren, en altijd een goed cadeau als je naar het buitenland gaat.

Syrup waffle[Sy-rup-waf-fle] - A waffle that consists of two halves of a waffle with syrup in between. Is universally considered to be delicious in The Netherlands, and it’s always a good present if you’re going abroad.

Tompoes[Tom-poes] - Gebakje met enorme hoeveelheden room en een roze glazuurlaagje. Niemand weet precies hoe het gegeten moet worden maar iedereen houdt ervan, vooral als er bezoek is.

Tompouce[Tom-pouce] - Pastry with large amounts of cream and a layer of pink frosting. Nobody knows exactly how it’s supposed to be eaten but everyone loves it, especially when people are visiting.

Wipkip[Wip-kip] - Een speeltoestel dat je kan vinden in elke Nederlandse speeltuin, en in de herinneringen van iedereen die ooit jong is geweest.

Seesawing chicken[See-sa-wing chi-cken] - A playing device you can find in every Dutch playground, and in the memories of anyone who once was young.

Beschuit met muisjes[be-schuit-met-muis-jes] - Een Nederlandse traditie waarbij beschuit met muisjes gegeten wordt bij de geboorte van een kind. De muisjes zijn wit en blauw of roze gekleurd, afhankelijk van het geslacht van de baby.

Rusk with little mice[rusk-with-little-mice] - A Dutch tradition for celebrating the birth of a baby. The mice are anise sprinkles colored white and either blue or pink, depending on the sex of the newborn baby.

Tokkie[to-kie] - Een asociaal figuur uit de lagere klasse. De term tokkie ontstond na de televisieserie Familietrots waarin de asociale familie Tokkie centraal stond.

Tokkie[tok-kie] - The Dutch version of a redneck or hillbilly. An asocial figure from the lower class. The term originated after the airing of the familyshow Familietrots about the asocial family Tokkie.

Snacken uit de muur [sna-cken-uit-de-muur] - Een Nederlandse uitvinding van het bedrijf FEBO waarbij je gefrituurde snacks uit de muur kan halen door geld in een gleuf te steken.

Snacks out of the wall[snacks-out-of-the-wall] - A Dutch invention from the company FEBO in which you get fried snacks out of the wall by putting money through a slot.

Juichpak[juich-pak] - Een destijds razend populair huispak ontworpen door stylist Roy Donders in samenwerking met de supermarktketen Jumbo tijdens het WK van 2014.

Cheersuit[cheer-suit] - A comfortable indoors suit designed by stylist Roy Donders in cooperation with supermarket chain Jumbo which was immensely populair during the World Championship in 2014.

HUP HOLLAND HUP!

Omafiets[o-ma-fiets] - Een typisch, comfortabele zwarte damesfiets met dikke banden en een terugtraprem.

Grannybike[gra-nny-bike] - A typical, comfortable black ladies bike with fat tires and a coaster brake.

Patatje oorlog[pa-ta-tje-oor-log] - Frietjes met daarop mayonaise (frietsaus), satésaus en rauwe uitjes.

War of the French fries[War-of-the-french-fries] - French fries with mayonaise, satay sauce and raw onions.

PlateauWC[pla-teau-w-c] - Een WC pot met een plateau erin om terugspattend water te voorkomen en om de ontlasting beter te kunnen inspecteren. Tevens bekend als een vlakspoeler.

Plateautoilet [pla-teau-toi-let] - A toilet with a plateau in it to prevent back splashing and to get a better look at the stool. Also known as the flatflusher.

Verjaardagskalender[ver-jaar-dags-ka-len-der] - Een kalender met daarop de verjaardagen van familie en vrienden genoteerd, soms inclusief foto’s van de jarigen. Deze kalender hangt standaard op het toilet.

Birthdaycalendar[birth-day-ca-len-der] - A calendar which records the birthdays of family and friends, sometimes including pictures of these people. This calendar hangs in the toilet.

Zwarte Piet[zwa-rte-piet] - Ooit het symbool van een kinderfeest, tegenwoordig het symbool van discussies over tradities en racisme.

Black Pete[black-pete] - Once the symbol of children’s holiday, now the symbol of discussions about traditions and racism.

Kapsalon[kap-sa-lon] - Een Nederlands gerecht bestaande uit frietjes, met daarop döner of shoarma vlees en gesmolten kaas. Hierop ligt nog een laag sla. sambal of/en knoflooksaus zijn optioneel. Het gerecht wordt voornamelijk gegeten na het uitgaan.

Kapsalon[kap-sa-lon] - A Dutch dish consisting of french fries, topped with döner or shawarma meat, grilled with a layer of Gouda cheese until melted and then subsequently covered with a layer of dressed salad greens. Garlic sauce and sambal are optional. The dish is mostely consumed after a night of drinking. Kapsalon translates to hairdressing salon.
