MPH Catholic December 29, 2019

The lyrics on the side of this page are from John Lennon and his song: HAPPY CHRISTMAS. It has

a good tune and a meaningful message—that we have a good CHRISTMAS SEASON, with love for all, the rich and poor and the young and the old. We are very thankful that the Lord has gotten us through some difficult moments the past year, and we do hope we can rejoice in the year ahead. Today is the feast of HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH—who are in BETHLEHEM AT THE BIRTH OF JESUS-THE LONG AWAITED MESSIAH. The Gospel begins with the Magi having visited and departed another way. The Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said, ‘Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.’ Thus the Holy Family became a family of DISPLACED, ON THE RUN, REFUGEES. They are a model for those in our time who experience similar treatment and status. We are all invited to see the negative in the

world, and as John Lennon said, ‘and so this is Christmas, for weak and for strong, for rich and for poor ones…’ I hope that Christmas this year was one of joy and hope and peace. In a few days it will be a NEW YEAR, and hopefully a wonderful year of hope and of joy. As CHRIST THE DIVINE SHEPHERD PARISH, may we live as the CHURCH which gives comfort and care, the Church of protecting the refugee, the lost sheep, the unwanted, the hurting, and the abused in any form. May Jesus the Lord, Mary His Blessed Mother of love, and Joseph, the PROTECTOR of the entire Church reach out to touch and comfort and satisfy all our needs and resolutions we may plan for the year ahead. On behalf of Fr. Larry, Fr. Thom, Fr. Rick, Fr. Faustine, Deacon Rick, and Deacon Mike, and all the staff, WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. LET’S HOPE IT’S A GOOD ONE, WITHOUT ANY FEAR. God bless you all each and every one. Fr. Al Zapf+

So this is Christmas And what have you done

Another year over And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas I hope you have fun

The near and the dear one The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas And a happy new year

Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear

And so this is Christmas For weak and for strong

For rich and the poor ones The world is so wrong

And so happy Christmas For black and for white For yellow and red one Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Christmas And a happy new year

Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear.

Thank You!

The St. Vincent dePaul Society wishes to thank all of the parishioners who so generously provided Christmas gifts to support the Angel Tree project this year. A total of 209 presents were delivered to the various agencies we supported. Our friends at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church were most appreciative of the gifts we supplied to the children of their food pantry clients. The other recipients of the gifts were also very appreciative. Your generosity has allowed the true spirit of Christmas to be shared with the less fortunate of our neighbors.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY will meet Wednesday, January 8th at 7:00 PM in the NAM Rectory Conference Room.

Stitching Angels

The Stitching Angels will not hold a meeting this December. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 15 at 1:30 PM. It will be held in the meeting room in the NAM school. As we begin the new year, we are in need of lap afghans, fleece shawls, hats/scarves and chemo caps. Please bring all completed items, as we will need them for deliveries this month. Let me know if you are in need of patterns or yarn. There will be a Mass on Sunday, January 19th at 11:00 AM for the Living and Deceased members of the Stitching Angels. Please let me know if you are able to attend, so we can take up the gifts at the Offertory. Questions and Comments: Mary Harrill, 412-372-3181, [email protected].

Taizé Service

Taizé is a small village in the eastern part of France. It is the home of an ecumenical community where prayer, three times a day, is the center of life. Part of that prayer time is spent in singing short repetitive refrains or ostinatos. Our Taizé Services borrow from this tradition. Our next service will be Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 7:00 pm at St. Bernadette Church. If you are interested in joining our Taizé Ministry email Josh Bandish at [email protected].

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE

On January 6th our new parish, Christ the Divine Shepherd, becomes a reality. In today’s Gospel we hear about how Joseph, following God’s message in his dreams, gave life-saving protection to Mary and Jesus. He saw their danger and he responded. We pray that Joseph can and will protect us, too, especially from any apathy, indifference, sadness, fear, or anxiety we have about our future and our new

parish. Saint Joseph envisioned new horizons for Mary and Jesus. May we be confident, through the intercession of Saint Joseph, that our new parish will be vibrant with Christian joy and minister in effective ways to all who are in need.

We welcome those who are interested in joining our parish family. We invite new members to complete a

registration form which can be obtained by calling one of our Church offices.

New Parish Contribution Envelopes

As Bishop Zubik announced earlier this month, the parishes of Monroeville and Penn Hills will become “Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish” on January 6, 2020. Therefore, the contribution envelopes that are mailed to you will be updated to reflect the new parish. In order to make these updates, it was necessary to merge all our systems. As a result, your envelope number will change. In addition, due to the updates in our systems, it’s possible that some parishioners will receive duplicate envelope mailings. If you receive multiple envelope mailings, or if you receive envelopes for family members who no longer live at your address, or if you have any questions about your new envelopes, please call Cathy at 412-373-0050 x215, and let her know which envelopes we should use (and which we should stop sending). Thank you for your patience as we update our systems!
