Sacrament of Penance “Those who approach the Sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offenses

committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have

wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conver-

sion” (LG 11 § 2) (CCC #1422)

The key to understanding the Sacrament of Penance is to understand how glorious it is to embrace a

life of ongoing conversion. This is the Christian life! It’s a life of continually growing closer to God

and moving further away from our sins. For some, this can seem like a burden and can be undesira-

ble. But if we understood the wonderful interior rewards of ongoing and deepening conversion, it

would be our greatest desire.

How I Prepare Preparation for the Sacrament of Penance is an ongoing process. It requires a daily acknowledge-ment of two things. First, we must see God’s mercy for what it is. Second, when and only when we understand and believe in God’s mercy will we then be properly prepared to fully embrace this sac-rament. Mercy is love. It’s the form of love given to us by God. And in order to receive mercy we must un-

derstand it. And in order to properly understand mercy, we must understand who God is.

How to Go to Confession

Begin by saying with the Priest: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Bless me, father, for I have sinned. It has been (how long?) since my last confession and these are my sins… (confess all your sins…be not afraid!).

After you confess your sins briefly, the priest gives you a penance and then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition:

ACT OF CONTRITION O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins be-cause of Your just punishments, but most of all of because they offend You, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

The priest then prays the prayer of absolution (forgiveness).

If your penance is to say some prayers, immediately go say those prayers, or do whatever penance is given.

You are forgiven!

Absolution: Among the many things we say about this Sacrament of Reconciliation, the central teaching we should cling to with much gratitude is the gift of absolution. Absolution means that once we have done our part by preparing, cultivating contrition, and confessing, God then does His part. He absolves all sin. This is done through the ministry of the priest and is imparted to us through the prayer of absolution. Once the priest prays it over us, our sins are wiped clean!

CRS Lenten Rice Bowl—Each student from Grades K-8, First Communion & Confirmation classes receives the RICE BOWL as their act of alms-giving. This is a sacrifice of giving a little portion taken from their allowance money to the poor as we observe the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Children/Students are taught to give up something for Lent aside from food, playing gadgets, others, and inculcating in their minds the value of sharing whatever extra coins they can give to the needy, thus practicing one of the Corporal Works of Mercy by feeding the hungry through Rice Bowl.
