Dear Residents

This year marks Singapore’s 52nd year of independence – an occasion that we celebrate with great joy and happiness. May Singapore continue to flourish in the years to come, growing steadfastly in prosperity and strength!

As part of our yearly tradition, we celebrated National Day together as one Sembawang family, commemorating the years of sacrifice and hard work which have made our little red dot into a thriving and prosperous home for everyone (Pages 3-5). A little closer to home, we also celebrated the launch of new developments in Sembawang GRC, such as the BW Monastery (Page 7) and the much-anticipated Kampung Admiralty (Page 6). Kampung Admiralty especially, will function as the heart of our growing community here in Sembawang, promoting inter-generational bonding and providing cohesive care for our pioneer generation.

What also brings a community together is good food, and Sembawang GRC has no

lack of it! This issue, we bring you a special feature called #MakanTrailSembawang (Pages 8-9), which shares some of the hidden food gems in our corner of the North. Why not make a date with your family and friends to explore Sembawang GRC together and try out all this good food?

How well do you know your neighbours? Here in Sembawang, we are fortunate to be part of a close-knit community, made possible only through caring and thoughtful neighbours. Check out some of the stories of neighbours living in Kampung Sembawang, and find out some of their simple tips on how to get to know your neighbours better (Pages 10-11).

Home is truly made up by the people who live in it. I believe that by working together, we can continue to make Sembawang and Singapore into a wonderful and gracious home for everyone. Majulah Singapura!

dr Lim Wee Kiak, pBMChairman

Sejauh mana anda mengenali jiran-jiran anda?

Majulah Singapura!

dr Lim Wee Kiak, pBMpengerusi

day!S ingapore is fortunate to have sustained

peace, security and independence for the past 52 years. This year’s National Day Parade theme –

#OneNationTogether, is a timely reminder for Singaporeans to stand together as one, against adversity and uniting our hopes for the future!

National Day celebrations have been a yearly affair for Sembawang GRC, and it is of no exception this year. We enjoyed a time of celebration and cheer in the National Day Carnivals and Dinners held in Admiralty, Canberra, Gambas, Sembawang and Woodlands divisions. Residents of all ages gathered together to commemorate Singapore’s independence and successes over the past 52 years. Lively stage performances were put up by the younger generation, igniting the celebratory mood of residents. Residents also sang to their hearts content as National Day songs rang through the various events.

This year is especially special as we also commemorate fifty years of National Service in Singapore. At our National Day Observance Ceremonies held in Canberra and Sembawang divisions, we paid tribute and recognised generations of Singaporeans who have defended for our nation, keeping our homes safe and secure.

adMiraLty Expectant residents could not contain their delight when

they explored their new residences – bearing testimony that Kampung Admiralty is progressively opening its doors to residents and the public. Known as the first

retirement kampung, the two blocks of 11-storey Housing Board flats bounded by Woodlands Drive 71 and Woodlands Ring Road boast of a two-level Admiralty Medical Centre, a hawker centre, a community garden and a childcare centre. The integrated development will also house shops and a supermarket.

MP for Sembawang GRC, Minister Khaw Boon Wan, took the honour to launch the Community Day @Kampung Admiralty on 12 August 2017. Recognising the efforts of many agencies, Minister Khaw spoke of the vision for seniors to live happily, actively and healthily in this HDB town. Thus, Kampung Admiralty has been designed in a way that encourages inter-generational bonding, social interactions and active ageing. These will help residents fight against loneliness, ill-health and depression.

Elderly-friendly features in the studio apartments come in the form of grab bars, alert alarm systems, induction hobs, resilient vinyl strip flooring that are slip- and moisture-resistant, and retractable clothes drying rack. This will help to ensure the safety and convenience for the elderly residing there.

Mdm Rohani Bte Ahmad, 60, who will be moving in, said, “When I open the door, I immediately like the concept, and the finishing was neat. I am very satisfied. I have already met some of my neighbours. They are all friendly.” She cited the proximity to the Admiralty MRT, and the various facilities as the major reasons for choosing to age-in-place in Kampung Admiralty.

Other healthcare facilities include the Admiralty Medical Centre, which offers treatment for elderly health issues such as diabetes and eye-related conditions right at their doorsteps. Active ageing programmes will also be organised for senior learning opportunities. With the co-existence of both the childcare centre and the Active Ageing Hub, the seniors can look forward to more inter-generational bonding through planned activities.

W oodlands residents have another option to attend Dharma lessons and give offerings to Buddha, at the BW Monastery (吉祥宝聚寺) that opens its door on 11 August. A five-storey monastery at 1 Woodlands Drive

16, it houses a basement carpark, offices, classrooms, library, a multi-purpose hall and dormitories for the Sangha. Replacing its previous headquarters in Geylang, the spacious facility is built to fully serve its 3,500 members.

MPs for Sembawang GRC Minister Khaw Boon Wan and Dr Lim Wee Kiak graced the official launch, amid Buddhist chants to bless the auspicious opening. The CEO of the Management Committee, Mr Simon Quek, said, “Besides propagating Buddhism through Dharma classes and ceremonies, the temple also holds a broad range of workshops spanning from healthcare, calligraphy, Tai Ji and flower arrangement to engage residents.”

Broaching on community involvement, Simon announced that the temple will hold ‘Joyfeast’ – free vegetarian meals for residents every first Sunday starting from 3 September 2017. Its volunteers have also been indefatigable in promoting inter-religious harmony. They helped in the provision of free meals for the needy during the opening of the Masjid Yusof Ishak in April this year as well.

“We will continue to service the community, promote interfaith harmony for the stability of our society,” Simon concluded.

THIS IS HOME:oUr SeMBaWang

neigHBoUrSMeet our young national recipient for the good neighbours award 2017, thulasiraman ranganathan Sammyukta!

nominated by her neighbor, Meenakshi Sundaram Sanshitha, for the good neighbours award 2017, Sammyukta has a kind and generous heart and takes the effort to look out for her neighbours, young and old.

HDB’s good neighbour award (gna) gives recognition to residents who have gone

the extra mile to enrich their community with selfless acts of care and neighbourliness, making a difference to the

lives of their neighbours.

W hen Sammyukta was first introduced to her next door neighbour, she was surprised to find that she already knew

her neighbour – they attended the same school together.

“I had met Sanshitha through another friend in school.” Sammyukta says. “So actually, when our neighbour introduced both of us, it was funny that I already knew who she was. But at the same time, I was glad to see a familiar face and know that she was living close by to me. This was how our friendship started.”

Sammyukta and Sanshitha, who are 10 years old and 8 years old respectively, soon started spending more time together. On weekday afternoons, they would study together or even stay active through badminton matches at the court downstairs. Over time, Sammyukta became an older sister figure to Sanshitha.

“I nominated Sammyukta for the (Good Neighbours) Award, because she is caring and she is always there to help me.” Sanshitha explains. “Whenever I have problems with my homework, I will just walk over and ask her for help. Even though she has her own homework to do, she will always make time to help me, cheerfully and willingly.”

“I am so happy that Sammyukta won the award because I feel that she deserves it. I am very, very happy for her.”

During the course of their friendship, both girls even discovered a common passion: arts and craft.

“I picked up crafts from my mother when I was about 4 years-old.” Sammyukta tells us. “I started off with the basic drawing, and slowly moved on to colouring and painting. Nowadays, I really enjoy making silk thread earrings, 3D art and paintings.”

Not only does Sammyukta share this knowledge with Sanshitha – but she shares her art skills with

other neighbours living along the same corridor. Accompanied by her mother, she conducts regular craft-making sessions over at their home on weekends for their neighbours.

“Arts and crafts is something everyone can do,” Sammyukta says with a smile. “So when everyone comes together to learn, and we can all take home something beautiful to look at – it reminds us of the fun times we had together.”

We ask both girls how we can make the first step to getting to know our neighbours better.

“arts and crafts is something everyone can do. So when everyone comes together to learn, and we can all take home something beautiful to look at – it reminds us of the fun times we had together.”

“When you can, you should try to include them in what you do.” Sammyukta says. “Ask them if they want to join you – whether to do something fun, or even to eat together. Be kind and caring towards your neighbours, and they will do the same for you.”

“I love my neighbours in this corridor, because they are all kind and friendly.” Sanshitha smiles. “We have parties together or they will invite me to their house to play or even sleepover at their house. I feel lucky to be living alongside such nice neighbours.”

HOW TO BE A

You don’t have to invite your neighbour for a meal right

away if you’re shy – but if you ever make any extra, you can always give them some. That’s always a good way to break the ice.

My mum always taught me to be kind and friendly to others,

which is something I live by. And I think when you’re kind and friendly to others – when you show a genuine interest in getting to know them – they’ll respond likewise.

People bond over food – our families exchange

food so many times and we go over and eat meals together. I think this has helped us become closer over time for sure.

Everyone takes the lift. So even asking a

simple question like, ‘which floor do you stay on?’ so you can help them press the button is a good way to break the ice.

– Mdm Tan, Good Neighbours’ Award Recipient for Admiralty Constituency

– Jasem, Good Neighbours’ Award Recipient for Sembawang Constituency

Being a good neighbor can be as simple as helping my

neighbours water the plants. My family lives next to an elderly couple and we often look out for them as much as we can.

– Jia Hui, Good Neighbours’ Award Recipient for Woodlands Constituency

A good neighbor is someone who simply helps—even

through the smallest gestures. If you see that your neighbour needs help, you can just go up to them and offer a hand. I don’t know if this will make that person’s day but it will definitely make mine!

– Yun Yu, Nominator

You have to show that you’re open and willing to strike up

a friendship. Even simple gestures like holding the lift for your neighbours in the morning or evening can go a long way.

– Mdm Lim, Nominator

Smile more! A smile is an instant way of

making everyone feel at home.– Mdm Sofia, Good Neighbours’

Award Recipient for Canberra Constituency

W oodlands residents can look forward to upgraded common areas and facilities, with three neighbourhood renewal programmes due to complete progressively by 2019. Apart from

the upgrading of 66 blocks as well as community spaces, new facilities will also be introduced to the neighbourhood.

On a ministerial visit to Woodlands on 11 June 2017, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, highlighted that estate upgrading projects should cater to the needs of residents. She explained that barrier-free access ramps will be built in anticipation of an ageing population. New facilities such as playgrounds, a basketball court and other sporting facilities will also meet the needs of our younger children and youths.

MP for Woodlands Division, Mr Amrin Amin joined Minister Grace Fu in attending two block parties and a time of Zumba at Blk 827 Woodlands Street 81 with our residents. They also visited and spoke to stallholders at the wet markets in Admiralty Place and Woodlands North Plaza.

“Such activities are a way to turn neighbourhood facilities into a very liveable and communal space where people can bond through sports or exercise and get to know their neighbours better,” Ms Fu said. Referring to upgraded facilities as ‘hardware’, Ms Fu shared that her ministry is looking into ways of making the hardware work better for residents.

In agreement, Mr Amrin Amin also added,” We are working hard to improve the software, to bring residents together. For instance, we have an open house to celebrate festive occasions and distribute nasi briyani during Ramadan.”

Wong Suying, a mother with a three-year old daughter, welcomed the proposed sheltered barrier-free access ramp near Blk 859A. Not only will it serve the wheelchair-bound, it also facilitates the use of strollers. “This makes it more convenient for young mothers like me to bring my kid around, especially when it rains,” she commented.
