Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 16 February 2020

Attending to Law. Both civil and Church law give us standards to guide

our thought and behaviors. Outward acts help us attend to inner treas-

ures. We need help for interpreting law rightly so that external actions

reflect a right and merciful heart. That is why the Penitential Act is

made early in Mass before gifts and selves are brought to the altar.

¨ How will I live in right relationship with God today?

¨ How will this spill over into right relationship with sisters and broth-

ers (real and in the Lord)?

¨ How will my interpretation of God’s law be filled with mercy and

loving-kindness?

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to

maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eat-

ing between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health

or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a

program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works

of charity and mercy.

FIRST RECONCILIATION

Many students who will be celebrating their first Holy Communion in a few months will also be celebrating the Sacrament of

Reconciliation for the first time soon. (The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also known as Confession or Penance.) The celebrations will

take place February 18, 19, 24, and March 13,during Religious Education class. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to pray as a family

every day. Please include the Sign of the Cross, Our Father, and Act of Contrition in your daily prayers. These prayers can be found in

their Religious Education books, on their prayer sheets, and printed below.

Atendiendo a la ley. Tanto la ley civil como la de la Iglesia nos dan

estándares para guiar nuestros pensamientos y comportamientos. Los

actos externos nos ayudan a atender los tesoros internos. Necesitamos

ayuda para interpretar la ley correctamente para que las acciones

externas reflejen un corazón correcto y misericordioso. Es por eso que el

Acto Penitencial se hace temprano en la Misa antes de que los regalos y

los seres sean llevados al altar.

¨ ¿Cómo viviré en una relación correcta con Dios hoy?

¨ ¿Cómo se extenderá esto a una relación correcta con hermanas y

hermanos (reales y en el Señor)?

¨ ¿Cómo se llenará mi misericordia de mi interpretación de la ley de Dios?

REGULACIONES CUARESMALES

1. Todas las personas mayores de 14 años tienen que

abstenerse de comer carne durante el miércoles de Ceniza

y todos los Viernes de la Cuaresma.

2. Todas las personas mayores de 18 anos y menores de

59 años de edad obliga el ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza

3. En estos tres días de ayuno y abstinencia, solamente

un platillo sin carne es permitido. Dos platillos sin carne

son suficiente para mantener la fuerza. Puede ser tomada

con la diferencia de cada caso. Comer entre comidas no es

permitido en estos días, pero líquidos, incluyendo la leche

y jugo de fruta son permitidos. Cuando la salud y la

habilidad de trabajar esta afectada seriamente, la ley no es

obligada.

4. Quebrar completamente la ley de ayunar y abstener es

un pecado serio.

La Cuaresma es una época principal de penitencia en el

año Cristiano. Todos los fieles son invitados a hacer un

programa voluntario, orar, y actuar en trabajos de caridad.

Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

“…….. I have come not to abolish but fulfill.” Matt 5:17

In these last couple weeks in February, the Diocese of Joliet

reminds us of our obligation to support the work of our Diocese in

its works of charity and formation. Many dioceses throughout the

country do this. The funds raised in this appeal contribute to

Catholic schools and various formation efforts, continuing

education of laity, diaconate formation, priest retirement, and

charitable outreach.

This weekend, the readings talk about the commandments and

Jesus as the fulfillment of the law. The reading from the Book of

Sirach invites us to obey the commandments and trust God. In the

Gospel we hear the familiar teaching of Jesus as the fulfillment of

the law. We know that if we are in Christ our charity and our self

giving is demonstrated in the ways that we commit ourselves. An

important way to do this is through our charitable giving. We are

mindful of the many ways that the Diocese of Joliet provides

hope for those who need help. The percentage of funds allocated

to each category break down as follows:

Catholic Charities 14%

Catholic Schools and Christian Formation 14%

Seminarian Education and Priest Care 26%

Christian Life 11%

Human Dignity, Justice and Peace 4%

Child and Youth Protection & Development of Stewardship 20%

Parish Rebates 11%

The Diocese of Joliet set a goal for our parish of $32,200. 70% of

the amount collected that exceeds the goal comes back to the

parish in the form of a rebate. I understand that in recent years the

parish has exceeded the goal. For example last year the parish

received a rebate in the amount of $2,016.

Next weekend in place of the homily, we will hear Bishop Conlon

reflect on the appeal and it’s importance to the diocese. We will

also be given a time to make a commitment to the appeal.

In conducting the appeal, the Diocese reminds us that the efforts

of the Church in matters like charitable outreach, Catholic

education, formation and care for our elderly priests are needs far

greater than any one parish can satisfy. We see that as a local

Church, we can collaborate to be a sign of hope. It is a great and

visible sign of the kingdom of Christ.

Sexta Semana del Tiempo Ordinario

En estas últimas semanas de febrero, la Diócesis de Joliet nos

recuerda nuestra obligación de apoyar el trabajo de nuestra Dióce-

sis en sus obras de caridad y formación. Muchas diócesis en todo

el país hacen esto. Los fondos recaudados en esta apelación con-

tribuyen a las escuelas católicas y diversos esfuerzos de forma-

ción, educación continua de los laicos, formación de diaconados,

retiro de sacerdotes y divulgación caritativa.

Este fin de semana, las lecturas hablan de los mandamientos y de

Jesús como el cumplimiento de la ley. La lectura del Libro de

Eclesiástico nos invita a obedecer los mandamientos y confiar en

Dios. En el Evangelio escuchamos la enseñanza familiar de Jesús

como el cumplimiento de la ley. Sabemos que si estamos en Cris-

to, nuestra caridad y nuestra entrega se demuestran en las formas

en que nos comprometemos. Una manera importante de hacer

esto es a través de nuestras donaciones caritativas. Somos cons-

cientes de las muchas formas en que la Diócesis de Joliet brinda

esperanza a quienes necesitan ayuda. El porcentaje de fondos

asignados a cada categoría se desglosa de la siguiente manera:

La Diócesis de Joliet estableció una meta para nuestra parroquia

de $ 32,200. El 70% de la cantidad recaudada que excede la meta

regresa a la parroquia en forma de un reembolso. Entiendo que en

los últimos años la parroquia ha excedido la meta. Por ejemplo, el

año pasado, la parroquia recibió un reembolso por un monto de $

2,016.

El próximo fin de semana en lugar de la homilía, escucharemos al

Obispo Conlon reflexionar sobre la apelación y su importancia

para la diócesis. También se nos dará un tiempo para comprome-

ternos con la apelación.

Al llevar a cabo la apelación, la Diócesis nos recuerda que los

esfuerzos de la Iglesia en asuntos como el alcance caritativo, la

educación católica, la formación y el cuidado de nuestros sacerdo-

tes ancianos son necesidades mucho mayores de las que cualquier

parroquia puede satisfacer. Vemos que, como Iglesia local, pode-

mos colaborar para ser un signo de esperanza. Es un signo grande

y visible del reino de Cristo.
