1. Taal

Erasmus schreef zijn Colloquia (Gesprekken) rond 1500 voor de rijke jongens aan wie hij privéles Latijn gaf. Een van die jongens bewaarde zijn schrift, verkocht die door en zo belandde de tekst uiteindelijk tegen de zin van Erasmus op de drukpers.

Wie had gedacht dat Erasmus’ Adagia zulke boeiende lectuur zouden

blijken te zijn? Veel meer nog dan een spreekwoordenverzameling – al

prettig op zich – is dit een bundel columns, kleine geschiedenislessen

over de oudheid, humoristische anekdoten en persoonlijke

beschouwingen van een sprankelende intellectueel.

2.2 Vertaling

Nieuwe Testament

Erasmus' levenswerk was zijn uitgave van het Nieuwe Testament in het oorspronkelijke Grieks met daarnaast een eigen Latijnse vertaling. De eerste druk verscheen in 1516.

Erasmus had grote ruzie met Maarten Luther. Een onderdeel van hun ruzie was de vraag of mensen uit eigen vrij wil keuzes kunnen maken en dingen kunnen doen. Volgens Luther is alles wat mensen doen, vooraf bepaald door God. In dit boek probeert Erasmus zijn eigen gelijk aan te tonen.

In dit boek getuigde Erasmus dat de wil van de mens wel vrij moet zijn,

omdat anders begrippen als Gods rechtvaardigheid en moraliteit zonder

enige betekenis blijven.

Er kwam veel kritiek. In deze apologie (verweerschrift) verdedigt Erasmus zich tegen de Franse geleerde Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples.

Dit boek van Erasmus heet "Klacht van de Vrede die overal door iedereen buiten de deur is gezet en in de vernieling geholpen." Pacifisten gebruiken Erasmus graag als boegbeeld. Daarbij komt dit boekje goed van pas. Mevrouw Vrede vertelt hoe treurig het met de wereld is gesteld. Overal woedt oorlog.

INSPIRATIE

Dit is een beschrijving van het leven van de heilige Hieronymus geschreven door Erasmus. Hieronymus was Erasmus' held. Je ziet hem hier zitten in z'n studeerkamer.

Hij gaat naar Venetie, Aldus Manutius. 1507. Logeert bij schoonvader. Hij breidde hier zijn Adagia uit met Griekse auteurs (niet eerder gedrukte manuscripten), Plato, Plutarchus, Pausanius. Haast je langzaam (festina lente), adagium in logo van Aldus: dolfijn en anker. De kleine letters van Aldus, kleine uitgave die je mee kan nemen.
