Basic raw materials and production initiative give low-cost monomers Over 25 years ago, Rohm & Haas initiated the commercial production of acrylic and methacrylic esters, and since then has maintained the lead in acrylic research and process de­velopment. To increase the availability of acrylics and to lower their cost, we developed economical processes for the syntheses of the monomers themselves and established means to derive many of the necessary intermediates from basic raw material sources. In recent years, multimillion dollar invest­ments have been made in new plant facilities in Houston, Texas to use natural gas and air in producing ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, acetylene, carbon monoxide, and metha­nol. These intermediates are subsequently used in making acrylates and methacrylates.

How does this benefit you? — Our 25 years of experience puts us in a good position to give you sound technical advice on the transportation, storage, and handling of these monomers. Also, price reductions have been brought about; for example, the price of ethyl acrylate has been lowered from 49c to 34c per pound within the past five years. Furthermore, Rohm & Haas puts at your disposal the widest selection of commer­cially available acrylic monomers, plus many acrylic monomers available in development quantities. You can polymerize these monomers by bulk, suspension, solvent, or emulsion tech­niques. You can also copolymerize them readily with a large number of other monomers and obtain many desirable prop­erties in the resulting copolymers. In addition, these unsatu­rated esters are valuable, reactive intermediates in chemical re­actions other than polymerization.
