    Types of Sentences

    Experienced writers use a variety of sentences to maketheir writing interesting and lively. Too many simple

    sentences, for example, will sound choppy and immaturewhile too many long sentences will be difficult to read andhard to understand

    SIMPLE SENTENCE

    A simple sentence, also called an independent clause,

    contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses acomplete thought.

    A. Some students like to study in the mornings.B. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon

    COMPOUND SENTENCES

    A compound sentence contains two independentclauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators areas follows:for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (FANBOYS)

    A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to

    speak English.B. Alex played football, so Maria went

    shopping.

    COMPLEX SENTENCE

    A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by oneor more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a

    subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or whenor a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which.

    A. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give

    the teacher the last page.

    B. The teacher returned the homework after shenoticed the error.

    C. The students are studying because they have a test

    tomorrow.D. After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to

    the movies.

    Types of Dependent Clauses

    There are at least three types of dependent clauses: nounclauses, adjective clauses, and adverbial clauses.

    Noun clauses are dependent clauses that act as nouns."They are often signaled with words such as that, which,what, who, whose, whatever, when, where, why, and how.

    For example:

    How you write the proposal doesn't matter to me. Lynn asked me what you did with the latest stress

    calculations.

    Adjective clauses "modify nouns and pronouns in otherclauses. They often begin with which, who, that, when, andwhy.

    For example: The meeting, which took three hours, was a waste of

    company time.

    The supervisor unfairly reprimanded the assistant, who was

    poorly trained in handling soil samples.Adverb clauses modify verbs, adjectives, or other

    adverbs. They often begin with words such as after, although,as, because, even though, unless, until, whether, and while.
