Plastic Marine Litter Programme: An integralapproach towards a plastic-free North Sea
• Programme with concrete projects aimed at a plastic-
free North Sea
• Flagship project of PlasticsEurope
• Science based, aiming at win-win-win solutions
• Aiming for improved waste management, behavioural
change, circular business models, habitat restoration,
science and policy development
• First project successfully completed in the Netherlands
in 2011; 2 projects running; 1 large grant application
• Up-scaling to North Sea countries in 2013 (?)
• Successes to be used in other seas

Main conclusions report
• Plastics do not belong in the ocean
• Plastic marine litter is one of the pollutants that
adds to existing threats to ocean health
• The unsustainable life cycle of plastics, and
especially the “leakage” in the end-of life phase,
forms a major cause of plastic marine litter
• Action is required at all levels of the current life
cycle of plastic
• Scenarios are lacking and need to be developed
for the North Sea

Project 1: Improve waste management
• Led by Stuf Kaasenbrood, PlasticsEurope
• Supported by PlasticsEurope and Desso
• Objectives:
1.Increase collection
2.Increase recycling
3.Close the leaks
• 2012: Inventory with Dutch stakeholders
• 2013: Scale-up to North Sea countries
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 25
Project 2: Closing the Chain of 0.5-literPlastic Drinking Bottles - led by DPI
• Question: how to prevent small (or all) plastic bottles in
NL ending up in the sea
• Supported by Sabic and Van Gansewinkel
• Aim: develop concepts for a closed cycle that will apply
to many types of packaging
• Research and solution development
• Partners: North Sea Foundation, Copernicus Institute
(Utrecht University), DPI and DPI Value Centre (Mgmt),
Kruidenier Food Services, IMSA Amsterdam,
PlasticsEurope, NRK
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 26
Project 3: “Mosa Pura” research -led by Hogeschool Zuyd
• Latin for “clean Maas”
• Startup supported by Sabic, Chemelot and
PlasticsEurope
• Research project on the presence of floating litter in the
river Maas, including microplastics and testing a
Thomsea
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 27
Project 4: The Plastic Sea Journey - fundingproposal to Dutch Postcode Lottery
• ! 2 million requested by de Waddenverenigingtogether with the North Sea Foundation, IMSAAmsterdam and Sterke Yerke
• Aiming at reducing plastic in the North Sea andWadden Sea by:
• Involving the public with actions, adventure andall media
• Beach cleanups and the raft voyage• Innovation Labs with industry and governments to
develop options for action and concrete solutions• Improving the knowledge base• Focus on the top 5 top of plastic marine litter
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 28
Deliverables PML work stream 2:Enable circular business models
• Development and extension of best practices
• Contribution to improved plastic labelling system
• Contribution to improving LCA methodology
• Start up new pilots for current sources of PML
• Promote an approach to avoid potential toxicants as the
industry norm and to increase eco-design products
• Problem analysis of microplastics in cosmetic products
• Contribution to integrate principles of cyclic business
models in education
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 29
Acties bedrijfsleven
• Probleem onderkend door wereldwijde plasticsindustrie
(maart 2011) inclusief NRK en PlasticsEurope; tientallen
acties waaronder Operation Clean Sweep, zie Marine
Litter Solutions
• Desso, Sabic, DPI, Chemelot, Van Gansewinkel,
Kruidenier, Nederland Schoon
• Cosmetica: industrie in defensief, retail reactief: HEMA,
Etos, De Tuinen, Rituals, Kruidvat en Trekpleister weren
producten met microplastics (2012)
• Probleem geenszins opgelost
! IMSA Amsterdam PMW015 30
Hoe nu verder
• PML bijeenkomst begin 2013
• Bijeenkomst Europese Commissie April 2013
• Publieksdialogen (Marlisco)
• Belemmering: Gebrek aan politieke wil, gevoel
van urgentie en budgetten
• Ecodesign! Circulaire economie!
