i n D E X

Met een paar vriendinnen maak ik eens in de zoveel jaar een tripje. Dit keer was het mijn beurt om de bestemming te bepalen. ik bladerde reisgidsen door, struinde het internet af en vroeg familie en vrienden naar hun favoriete bestemming.‘s nachts sliep ik onrustig. ik droomde van een bijzonderpaleis. De bewoners hadden iets mysterieus en het paleis was omsloten door een prachtige tuin vol geurige bloemen en exotische vogels.

Toen ik wakker werd, schoot me ineens iets te binnen. het paleis uit mijn dromen had ik eerder gezien. Maar waar? Die middag, tijdens het wieden van het onkruid in de moestuin, wist ik het ineens. als klein meisje vond ik tijdens een logeerpartijtje bij neef Wout en neef Niels op zolder een stoffig dik boek.Het boek stond vol tekeningen van het paleis uit mijn dromen. in mijn enthousiasme belde ik neef Wout en vroeg hem of hij het boek nog had. Wout begreep meteen over welk boek ik gedroomd had. hij beloofde op zoek te gaan. Een paar dagen later ontving ik een pakketje. het sprookjesachtigepaleis bleek echt te bestaan. het was The Royal Pavilion in brighton. Een klein paleis aan de Engelse kust.

ik belde mijn vriendinnen dat ik onze vakantiebestemming gevonden had. De reacties waren minder enthousiast dan ik hoopte. brighton? Wat moesten we daar nu doen? ik hield een betoog waarom dit onze plaats van bestemming moest zijn: het paleis, strand, zee, high-tea met mierzoete cupcakes… Ze gingen overstag. De boottocht en de autorit ernaar toe voelde alsof we bijrol speelden in een Agatha Christie film. De bed & breakfast waar we overnachtten was een typisch Engelse cottage en werd gerund door een vriendelijk oud echtpaar. Toen wij vertelden waarvoor we kwamen veerde de Engelse dame op. Ze vertelde over haar grootmoeder van wie ze een gouden sleutel had geërfd. De sleutel zou afkomstig moeten zijn van het paleis. Ze had hem al die tijd bewaard. Omdat het echtpaar geen kinderen had, vond ze dat ik de eigenaar van deze bijzondere sleutel moest worden.

De volgende ochtend gingen we al vroeg op pad. Met al dat gekletsvan mijn vriendinnen, was het nog een hele klus om aan de linkerkant van de weg te blijven rijden. Maar gelukkig kwamen we zonder kleerscheuren bij The Royal Pavilion aan.Van het ene op het andere moment belandden we in een totaal

andere wereld. Een exotische, sprookjesachtige omgeving. Dit was geen typisch klassiek bouwwerk, laat staan een paleis dat je in deze omgeving zou verwachten. het was een landhuis, maar toch ook weer niet. het had koepels,pagodes en torentjes. alles met wit reliëf. En op de achtergrond zag je de zee.

Ook van binnen oversteeg het paviljoen al onze verwachtingen. Kroonluchters in de vorm van kelken, handbeschilderd behang met vogels en bloemen, de meest prachtige mozaïeken, rijkelijke draperieën met gouden motieven en kleurig tapijt.De sleutel brandde ondertussen in mijn broekzak, maar ik zag zoveel deuren en kasten dat ik niet wist waar te beginnen. anna spoorde me aan een poging te wagen. Onhandig probeerde ik de sleutel in een van de vele sleutelgaten te wurmen, maar de sleutel bleek te groot.

We besloten nog wat te wandelen door de tuin, toen mijn oog viel op een afgebladderde houten deur in de stenen muur die de tuin omringde. Dedeur was nauwelijks te zien. ik probeerde de rozentakken opzij te duwen. het zou toch niet…. ik pakte de sleutel en bewoog hem in het roestige sleutelgat. ik wilde net opgeven toen er ineens beweging in leek te komen. ik duwde tegen de deur en viel naar binnen. Mijn vriendinnen lachten zenuwachtig om mijn gestuntel. De struiken in de binnentuin waren meters hoog. achterin zagen we nog net het dak van een tuinhuis. We baanden ons een weg door de wildernis om het van dichtbij te kunnen bekijken. We gluurden naar binnen en bij het openen van de deur ontsnapte een haas die hier zijn tijdelijk onderkomen had gevonden. We hoorden stemmen en maakten dat we wegkwamen. ik deed nog een poging om de deur weer op slot te doen, maar de sleutel brak af.

Je begrijpt dat ik sinds dit bijzondere reisje alles lees wat er te lezen valt over dit mysterieuze paleis. Over de geheime tuin kan ik helaas niets vinden, dus fantaseer ik er op los:Over een knappe prins die betoverd is door een heks. Deze heks heeft hem veranderd in een haas, waardoor hij niet langer in zijn paleis kan wonen. Om toch dicht bij zijn familie te kunnen zijn, woont hij op een geheime plek in de paleistuin. Wachtend op een bijzonder meisje dat deze betovering kan verbreken…

DE VERbORGEn TUin in bRiGhTOn

Once every few years i go on a trip with a couple of girl friends. This time it was my turn to choose the destination. i looked through some travel guides, scoured the internet and asked my family and friends what their favourite destinations were. That night i couldn´t sleep well at all. i dreamt of a fabulous palace. The residents of the palace were very mysterious and the palace was surrounded by a beautiful garden full of scented flowers and exotic birds. When I woke up, it hit me. i had seen the palace in my dreams before. but where? That afternoon, while i was weeding the kitchen garden, i remembered. When i was a little girl, while staying with my cousins Wout and niels, i had found a thick, dusty book in the attic. The book had lots of drawings of the palace in my dream. i was so enthusiastic that i phoned cousin Wout straightaway and asked him if he still had the book. Wout immediately knew which book i had dreamed about and promised to go and look for it.

a few days later i received a package. The fairy tale palace really existed. it was The Royal Pavilion in brighton, a small palace on the English coast. i phoned my friends and told them that i had found our holiday destination. Their reactions were less enthusiastic than i had hoped. brighton? What on earth would we do there? i explained to them exactly why this was a great destination: the palace, the beach, the sea, high-tea with the sweetest of cup cakes ... and they agreed.

The boat trip and the drive there felt as though we were bit players in an Agatha Christie film. The bed & breakfast where we stayed was a typical English cottage and was run by a friendly elderly couple. When we told them why we had come to brighton, the elderly English lady jumped to her feet. She told us about her grandmother from whom she had inherited a golden key. That key was supposed to have come from the palace. She had kept it all these years. as the couple had no children, she thought that i should become the owner of this special key.We left the bed & breakfast early the next morning. With all the chatter in the car it was hard to remember to drive on the left side of the road. but luckily we arrived at The Royal Pavilion in one piece.from one minute to the next we entered a whole new world. an exotic, fairy tale world. The palace was not a typical,

classical building, let alone the type of palace that you would expect in this area. it was a manor house, but then, it wasn’t really. it had cupolas, pagodas and towers. Everything was in white relief. in the background was the sea.The palace exceeded our expectations on the inside too. Candelabras in the shape of flower buds, hand painted wallpaper with birds and flowers, the most wonderful mosaics, luxurious draperies with golden designs and colourful carpets.

in the meantime, the key was burning in my trouser pocket. but there were so many doors and cupboards that i didn’t know where to start. anna encouraged me to just try. Clumsily, i tried to insert the key into one of the many keyholes, but it was too big. We decided to walk around the garden. Then my eye fell on a peeling wooden door in the stone wall that enclosed the garden. The door was barely visible. i tried to push the rose bushes aside. it couldn’t possibly be ... i took the key and turned it in the rusty keyhole. i was just about to give up when the door started to give. i pushed the door and fell inside. My friends laughed nervously at my clumsiness.The bushes in the courtyard were metres tall. at the back of the courtyard we could just see the roof of a gazebo. We pushed a way through the wilderness to get a close look at the gazebo. We peered inside and as we opened the door, a hare, which had found shelter here, ran out. We heard voices and left. i tried to lock the door again, but the key broke.

You won’t be surprised to hear that since i went on this special trip i have read everything there is to read about this mysterious palace. But I can’t find anything about the secret garden. So i use my imagination to weave a story about ...

a handsome prince is under the spell of a witch. The witch had turned him into a hare so that he can no longer live in his palace. but to still be close to his family, he lives in a secret place in the palace garden. he is waiting for a special girl who can break the spell ...
