Reactions 1368 - 10 Sep 2011 S Octreotide Thrombocytopenia: case report A 54-year-old man presenting with haematemesis and light-headedness developed thrombocytopenia during treatment with octreotide [indication not clearly stated]. The patient, who had a history of oesophageal varices and alcoholic liver disease, received a 50µg IV bolus of octreotide, followed by a continuous infusion of 50 µg/hour, in addition to saline, packed RBCs, thiamine, folic acid and ciprofloxacin. After 9 hours, his platelet count had decreased from 155 000/mm 3 to 77 000/mm 3 and remained low at approximately 50 000/mm 3 for 3 days after admission. Laboratory tests for acute thrombocytopenia were within normal ranges. A diagnosis of drug-induced thrombocytopenia was presumed. Octreotide therapy was withdrawn 3 days after admission, and rapid improvement was observed. The patient exhibited a platelet count of 114 000/mm 3 and was discharged from hospital 5 days after admission. Rashidi A, et al. Octreotide-induced thrombocytopenia: A case report.
