    ^ A V A ^CHURgfT^ Cf^IST MISSION w 'fn JAN 10 1955P .O . BOX 1727Windhoek , SWA

Dear Chriatlan FV le nda ; ' 1s t . January, 1955We wish to thank each one of you for your many prayers for , andyour continued support of the work of the Lord here in Africa duringthis past year. V/e have enjoyed hearing personally from many of youTYour l e t t e r s have always "been a joy to receive since we have so l i t t l e

r e a l con tac t with european f r i ends here ;Severa l parce ls arr ived in time fo r Ghriatmas making i t a joyfuloccasion, especially for the ^i r l s . They love above a l l else , openine anewly a r rWed pa rc e l . The Christmas program fo r the mission was held^onSunday night immediately after Ghristmai. This happened to be a verystormy evening which made the group somewhat smal le r than we had expected , yet there were over twenty presen t . Brother Qwemesha presented themessage of the evening in Afrikaans for ua and i t was erreatly appreci a t ed by those p re sen t .Brothe r Qwemesha only rece ived h is permi t s to come to SouthWest Afric a v ery short ly before i t was time to depart from Klmberleyfor here, so we did not learn of his arrival unti l the day before he"was he re . He arr ived here very ear ly on the 23rd of December a f te r having spent three days and nights on a very alow t r a i n . His t r a in waswhat la called a "mixed train" here, that is i t bad both freight andDaaaenser ca rs . He began v/ork immediate ly and helped me prepare the*Gospel Lights for the mail most of the day and ^hat evening dis t r ibuted t rac t s to the people as they re turned home from work. Each a f t e rnoon t h i s week we have had c la s se s fo r the ch i l d r e n .These clasaea have been very aim llar to D.Y,b,3 . at home. The f i r s t

period la assembly, during which we sing famil iar choruses and I teacha l e s son us ing the f l anne lboard . Brother Nick in te r iore ts fo r th is le ssen. He then teaches a class in Afrikaans, af te r which we have a handwork class and f inal ly a re-assembly and dismissal .At eight o:clock, or as soon thereafter as possible v the eveninste'/angelistic services comm.ence. The people are usually very slow inarriving so i t la invariably eight thirty or later by the time we actually are able to s ta r t . This does not allow a very long period for themeeting i tself aa brother Qwemesha understanfebly enough, wishes to be"on the location by the time curfew s tar t s . This is nine ojclock. He isusually of necessity, a few minutes l a te . He has been preachins a verygood se lec t ion of aermons at the meetima and they have in f?eneral, been quite ve i l rece ived by those presen t . We have found durinc thef i r s t week however that the attendance, is very unrel iable; One'^nightthere wil l be a very encouraging group, then the next i t la ao low aa

to be very discouraging. Do continue to pray for these people that thevmay be brought to see ^heir very r ea l need of sa lva t ion. Most of themhave been sprinkled as infants and do not aee anymore that they needeven so much aa to attend church, le t alone be Scripfcurally bapt lzedl 'They simply can not seem to grasp that Christ ianity la a way of l i feand not Jus t something you once "join" then fo r s e t . To date even brother Nick has not been able to persuade any adults to attend the services. The majority of those 'attending have been teen-age young people".We personally had found this to be our problem, but had fervently hoped and prayed that he,being of their own race ,and speaking in theirl anguage , could reach them be t t e r .

The Gospel continues to reach out to other par ts of Africathrough the lessons-by-mail . We nov7 have over seven-hundredenrolled in this phase of the work. One interesting fact is that nearlyone hundred-f i f ty of them are from a small I50 mile radius ci rc le insouthe rn Niger ia and Gold Coast 1 The ind ica t ions are t ha t th is shouldbe an ideal place for nevr missionary recrui ts coming to Africa, to planto 50. We know of no one planning to q:o to this area, but do susccest'i t as an area for which Chris t ian brethren should pray.

    God bless you a 111Yot^ I^y.s3ionary to Africa",R o b e r t S. Mills

I t is our great pleasure to announce to you the arr ival ofa new daughter in our home. She was born early on the morning ofFebruary 24th, and weighed 8 lb . 4 oz. at birth. We have named herDonna May. Both mother and daughter are doing very well and the restof the family are looking forward to their soon returning home fromthe hosp i t a l to be with u s .As you know, for many months we have been experiencing dif-ficultiea with the work locally while that part which is done^bymail has prospered and grown beyond our fondest hopes. This s i tua t ionhas been much on our thoughts and prayers for several months, so weconducted an evangelistic meetincc late last year with a view toreally discovering what hope there is for the loca l phase of the v;_ork.Brother Nick's calling and teaching on the location revealed verythat there is l i t t le hope of reaching: these people now, esp

ecial ly as i t is necessary to have the meeting place off the locationand to use a European evangelist. The people are not enough interestedin the Lord's vrord to make the additional effort needed to walk a fewhundred yards to hear, or even for that matter to attend the otherchurches in their very midet on the location. During and since theunderstand v^ithout any doubt our stand and turnedtheir backs on the teachir^ of the Gospel by not attending'. This s ituation has not improved with the passing of time,

a f t e r much p raye r , we have dec ided to ac -S standir^ offer to teach at the Preacher Training School inKimberley for a period, while we investicrate areas which the responseto the correspondence work shows to be vitally interested. Do nrav fov^us while we make these investigations. One area we are especiallyin te re sted in investigating has nearly one-hundred students in an areaniiles radius I I t is also the very hub of the postal^yatem of southern Africa and would give us the very best postal service for the remainder of the students that could possibly be obtained.

re q ue s ts fo r a new church in the area and so^e2 students are at work toward that end. Such a move will make i tfor the first time, possible for us to contact personally many of ourstudents by mail, and we are easterly lookincs forward to i t as a creatforward s tep in the Lord's work^ gr ta iTV'p-ini IS teaching at the Preacherraining School V7ith the start of the new term, immediately after:^aster and the annual conference of the South African Mission at whichI have been invited to deliver one of the raessasea. To this end, weplan to move temporarily to Kimberley tov^ard the end of March.

con t inues to p ro sp er n rre at lv . There are nowfile nearly 850 addresses. Many of the studentsare now sending thenames of their friends who have seen their papers or lessons and^also^^ong these people there are very few New TestamentChriatiana. there are Catholics, nearly all thFde nominat loMfmanynative cults, and simple paccans represented. One recent

letter came f^'om a man representing a^group practicinc: polycramy. Hisgroup was searching for a mission which did not consider the matter ofKia person had of importance and would sponsor them!n S several v/ives was that they could not affordarm labor and thus used their wives to work on the farm. He askedfor the course on Bible Doctrines. It was sent with Dleaaure as wpHquest ions . Such a s i tua t ion is far 'more common than we would like to believe, especially in the more remote parts

    God bless you a l l .Your's in the Master's Service,Yoi^ Missiojnary to Africa,

We now have1085 enrolled, and the enrollments are s t i l l coming in every post .We do rejoice for them, but we often v;onder just how we are TOingto be able to adequately care for them.

    Many of the newer enrol lments are coming from the r>old.Coas t and Niger i a . We r e j o i ce fo r th i s in t ha t v/e are anx ious lvlooking forward to the tune when v.'e sha l l be able to supply theirnames and addresses to Brother G-oldsberry and h is .^ood wife , whohave answered our plea for vrorkmen for tha t a rea . Do keeo them inyour praye rs t ha t t h e i r r ecen t app l i c a t i on fo r v i s ae s w i l l bepromptly approved. They are badly needed. The number o f co ntac tswhich we have in those two countr ies has in cre ase d so rapidly thepas t few weeks t ha t we have l o s t a l l count , but it now numbers inthe hundreds . . _ _

We have a t t ended and t aken par t in the vrorship a t s eve r a ld i f f e r en t churches th i s month, among them being the church in theKimberley loca t ion, the church at Greenpoint . the Chinese church,European se rv ic e s in the Stan leys home, se rv i ces on one of thef a rms , and s e rv i c e s a t the con fe rence .F r s M ill s a t t e nd s women ' smeetings vjith Mrs Stanley at G-reenpoint. One of the highlights ofthe month v/as the openino: of the new chu rc h buil di nc f a t Hopetcivnjus t before the conference began a t Douglas. At the time being, we are still l iv ing in the home- of the

Stanley ' s , but vre are certainly hopeful that before our next le tter, we s h a l l be in our ovm home We have found, a sma l l two bedroomhouse at 13 Lake Road which vje hope to be able to occupy in abouttv7o weeks or l e s s . I t i s not so co nv en ie nt an house as the one herebut we she l l be happy to be se t t l ed in our home accain. There areseveral good things in i t s favor among v/hich is a'nice variety ofthriving young f ru i t t rees , and an excellent lawn and ^^arden. Theseare the th ings which we most missed in V^"indhoek. The chil dr en , e sp ecia lly Kathy and Ruth Kllen, are t h r i lled with Kimberley'. Here for the f i r s t time, they have playmates.Larry Stanley is about their age and they have a great time to-::-ether even though they do often end up in violent disa^treement, especia l ly over h is toys . Our immediate neithbors in our new homewill be basically Afrikaans speaking , but there are several En^-'llsh speaking fdmilies in the same block including the Stanley's.Do continue to pray for us, and especial ly for our studentsover Africa, ''.'"e need your prayers always.

//e are happy to be able to say that we are once a^raini n our own home. I t was only about the middle of the montB thatwe were able to complete the transactions and to take posesslonof the house at 13 Lake Road here in Kimberley. It has beendecided that we shal l remain permanently here at Kimberley andconduct the correspondence lessons from here. Our home is onlyfive doors down the street from the Stanley's and is on the nextblock over from the Killiam Rees ^ so we are looking forvjard toChristian fellowship which we have loncs not been able to enjov.Forthe f i r s t time since we l e f t v;^indhoek, I able to unoack '\riy supplies and do the lessons with some degree of convenience. The house has a dining? room which we have chosen to use as ano f f i c e a t l e a s t f o r the time beinjz. T h e convenience of an office in the house is especiallyappreointed in vievj of the fact that I am teochinnr every v/eekday in the preacher t raining school, serving as the "to-between"between the ministers and the railways for cheaper travel rates,f'^ct t h a t we have nearly 1200people to keep track of in regards to the lessons-by-post, rcnymore of these students are nov; askinor ouestions when thev writeme p e r s o n a l l y and t h i s r e q u i r e s considerable research i n a d d i t -ion^to extra letter writing. THE PREACHER TRAINING SCHOOLThis was the first class which I had the opportunity of helping to teach

in the preacher training school at Kimberley. Pictured above are the ninestudents and two teachers who began the term. Brother Qwemesha, immediately to the right of Brother Stanley, as well as being a student, alsotaught a class in Personal Evangelism. I taught two classes, Homiletics, and The Life of Christ from John. Two of our students did not get to finishthe term, they both dropped out for personal reasons early in the term andthe remaining seven all completed the work.

My classes were the first two in the morning. They started at 7:20 andclosed at 9:00. My purpose in taking the first two classes was to leavethe remainder of the day free for doing my correspondence in connectionwith the students by mail. This phase of the work is ever-growing and requires much time. During this coming term, I shall take the evening classeswhich meet from 6:00 to nearly 8:00. This term I am planning to teachHomiletics again and also the Book of Mark. We are looking forward togood term in the classroom for the Lord.

Mission Services i_ . .Joliet. Illinois opposite page is a mapshowing the many countries (14) which are beingtouched by this work. For each country, we have listed the number of students and people reading the GOSPEL LIGHT that we have there. Thisfigure was as of the first.of July and of course will not be accurate by thetime that this issue of the South VJest African Messenger can go to press, but it will give you a good idea of the field being served. Only a fractionof these areas are now being preached the New Testament Gospel by anyother means than through this work. They must be reached! It was withgreat joy that we received the letter from the Goldsberrys of their hopesto enter into Nigeria. We have given them references from among our students, and one of them recently wrote me of his eagerness for the arrivalof the missionaries. As you can see, Nigeria is only second to SouthAfricain interest in the Gospel. The Gold Coast is only a short distance behind. It too should not be neglected. Many of these people are eager to learn,

but have no one to teach them.Only a casual glance at the figures on the opposite page will revealthe reason we have moved to Kimberley. South West Africa ranks last in

interest save for one request from French speaking Ivory Coast. Of thefive students from South West Africa, none are in the least promising. Itwas with much sorrow and regret that we came to the obvious conclusionthat there was little we could do in Windhoek, but the Lord has shown thewisdom of our move in His great blessings since. In Kimberley, we canhelp with the Preacher Training School as well as do the work by mail. For the work by mail, we have a much better postal service, and we aremuch more centrally located in respect to the people we serve.

of the more recent ones .Youwill be pleased to know that this Lord's day afternoon, I baptizedL. N. who has done your Bible study courses.

    F. M.N. Rhodes i a

Brother Stanley introduced me to Brother M. of Lamontville near Durban sohe baptized me on the 6th of February. I hope you shall tell BrotherStanley about the news. I beg to remain yours faithfully.A. R. R.Umkoomas, S. A.

Many thanks for your monthly Gospel Light. It is very interesting toread. The reading of the Gospel Light has already helped me to preparea sermon and preach it.

    M. J.Durban, S. A.I had been in darkness, but since I started corresponding with theChurch ofChristMissionlfound that the darkness is fast disappearing away.

    J. M.Rustenburg, S. A.Sir, I have tried very hard to organize the Church of Christ here inBloemfontein... .1 hope sir, the Church ofChrist will really be organizedby those who wish to follow His commandments and obey His instructions.

    God will bless us all .H. R.Bloemfontein, S. A.

These are but a few of the letters we receive, but they do serve toshow that theGospel is reaching out and the Light isgoing into the heartsof people where there had before been only darkness. The mails are trulycarrying light into the dark hearts of many African men and women.S. W. Africa Church of Christ Mission Sec. 34.65(e) P. L. & R.Mrs. Mabel Mills, Forwarding Agent U. S.
