De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen verzorgt kwalitatief hoogstaand onderwijs en onderzoek, is internationaal georiënteerd, honoreert verschillen in ambities en talenten, werkt actief samen met het bedrijfsleven, overheden en burgers en behoort tot de top van de Europese universiteiten. Gevestigd in de energieke stad Groningen, waar de afstanden gering zijn en de mogelijkheden groot. Een stad waar een ieder graag woont, werkt en studeert.

Vierhonderd jaar onderwijs en onderzoekDe Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) verzorgt al bijna vier eeuwen wetenschappelijk onderwijs en onderzoek op hoog niveau. Gesticht in 1614 is de RUG een van de oudste universiteiten in Europa. De RUG is een universiteit met een moderne, studentgerichte visie op onderwijs. Er is intensief contact tussen betrokken en bevlogen docenten en actieve en initiatiefrijke studenten. Studenten krijgen veel vrijheid om hun eigen studieprogramma samen te stellen. De inrichting van het onderwijs, met flexibele bachelors, majors en minors draagt hier aan bij. Negen faculteiten bestrijken vrijwel alle wetenschapsgebieden. En in negen Graduate Schools werken wetenschappers, promovendi en masterstudenten samen aan de grenzen van het weten.

Rijksuniversiteit Groningen: werken aan de grenzen van het weten

Toonaangevende research-universiteitGroningse onderzoekers en onderzoeksgroepen behoren tot de absolute wereldtop, ondermeer op gebieden als scheikunde, biologie, materiaalkunde, sterrenkunde en filosofie. De RUG spant zich in om deze positie te versterken, zeker niet in de laatste plaats door eigen talent te herkennen en vast te houden. Jonge veelbelovende wetenschappers komen in aanmerking voor een tenure track- aanstelling: deze geeft uitzicht op een complete academische carrière tot hoogleraar. Rosalind Franklin Fellowships zijn tenure tracks speciaal voor vrouwelijke onderzoekers. Verder zoekt de universiteit op allerlei manieren naar praktische toepassingen van haar wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Zo worden jonge kennisintensieve bedrijven geholpen een succesvolle start te maken. Ook is de RUG partner in diverse samenwerkingsverbanden met bedrijven, publieke organisaties en de overheid. Dat gebeurt onder andere op het terrein van de nanotechnologie, ict, life sciences, sociale cohesie en energie.

Ruim baan voor talentHet beste uit jezelf halen, dat is wat de RUG van haar studenten vraagt. Tegelijkertijd zorgt de universiteit voor een onderwijsomgeving waarin dat mogelijk is. Ambitieuze studenten schrijven zich in voor verzwaarde Honoursprogramma’s, zowel in de bachelorfase als in de masterfase. Wie serieuze sportieve aspiraties heeft, krijgt volop gelegenheid topsport te combineren met een universitaire studie. En voor wie commerciële initiatieven wil ontplooien, is er de Stichting StudEnterprise, die het ondernemerschap bij studenten stimuleert. Dat de RUG haar studenten serieus neemt, blijkt ook uit hun participatie in het bestuur. De RUG is een academic community: personeel en studenten praten mee en beslissen mee. En voelen zich daardoor betrokken bij hun universiteit.

Uitstekende faciliteitenDe RUG biedt een stimulerende studeer- en werkomgeving. De universitaire gebouwen liggen verspreid over de stad: op sfeervolle historische locaties in de binnenstad, dicht bij de patiëntenzorg in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen en in architectonisch spraakmakende nieuwbouw op de Zernikecampus. Studenten en medewerkers beschikken over geavanceerde apparatuur en de modernste ict-voorzieningen. De afstanden in Groningen zijn klein, men weet elkaar gemakkelijk te vinden. Dat is belangrijk, want op het snijvlak van wetenschapsgebieden vinden vaak ontdekkingen plaats.

Over grenzenOf het nu gaat om een carrière in het onderzoek en onderwijs, het bedrijfsleven of de diplomatie, internationale ervaring is tegenwoordig een must. Daarom stimuleert de universiteit haarstudenten en onderzoekers buiten de grenzen van de eigen studie en het eigen land ervaring op te doen. Het vinden van een goede onderzoeks- of studieplek wordt vergemakkelijkt door de uitgebreide netwerken en samenwerkingsverbanden die de universiteit heeft. Omgekeerd komen ook steeds meer buitenlandse studenten en onderzoekers naar Groningen.

Het onderwijsaanbod speelt in op deze ontwikkelingen, met nu al 83 Engelstalige master- en 8 Engelstalige bacheloropleidingen. Zo worden de universiteit en daarmee ook de stad Groningen steeds internationaler.

Groningen: City of TalentDe stad Groningen heeft de jongste bevolking van Nederland: twintig procent van de ruim 190.000 inwoners studeert in het hoger onderwijs, aan de RUG of aan de Hanzehogeschool. Groningen is dan ook een City of Talent: een kennisknooppunt dat fungeert als broeikas waarin jong talent kan rijpen en bloeien. Omgekeerd bepalen stad en omgeving het karakter van de Groningse universiteit. Groningen is een sfeervolle, historische stad van bijna 1000 jaar. Masteropleidingen zijn bedoeld om je te specialiseren in een bepaalde richting en je voor te bereiden op een loopbaan, in de beroepspraktijk of in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen kent verschillende typen masters.

Algemene masteropleidingenDe meeste masteropleidingen zijn algemeen van aard en duren één, anderhalf of twee jaar (60, 90, 120 ECTS, studiepunten). Na het succesvol voltooien van een masteropleiding krijg je, afhankelijk van de gevolgde opleiding, de titel Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) of Master of Laws (LLM).www.rug.nl/masteropleidingen Research masters en top masters binnen Graduate SchoolsBen je geïnteresseerd in onderzoek, dan kun proberen of je wordt toegelaten tot een research master (RM) of top master (TM). Deze masters duren twee jaar, zijn bedoeld voor excellente studenten en kennen een toelatingstraject. Double Degree/Joint programmesBen je op zoek naar internationale academische scholing? De RUG biedt vijftien Double Degree programmes (DD) en Joint programmes (J) aan. Dit zijn masters van één of twee jaar, opgezet in samenwerking met toonaangevende buitenlandse universiteiten, waarbij je zowel aan de RUG als in het buitenland studeert. Zo maak je kennis met andere onderwijssystemen en culturen en ontvang je na afloop een extra certificaat of een tweede diploma van de buitenlandse partner-universiteit. Negen van deze internationale masteropleidingen bezitten de prestigieuze Erasmus Mundus status. Het Erasmus Mundus programma (EM) is een samenwerkings- en mobiliteitsprogramma van de Europese Unie op het gebied van onderwijs en onderzoek. www.rug.nl/doubledegree

Masteropleidingen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

ToelatingIedere bacheloropleiding aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen kent minimaal één masteropleiding waartoe je met een bachelordiploma van deze universiteit rechtstreeks toegang hebt. Wil je een masteropleiding volgen die niet rechtstreeks aansluit bij de gevolgde bacheloropleiding, dan moet je toelating aanvragen. Dat geldt ook als je van een andere universiteit komt of een hbo-opleiding hebt afgerond. De toelatingscommissie van de faculteit waar de master-opleiding onder valt, beoordeelt deze aanvraag. Ben je van plan een masteropleiding aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen te gaan volgen, informeer dan tijdig naar de toelatingsmogelijkheden. Neem daarvoor contact op met de studieadviseur van de betreffende opleiding. Die weet of toelating mogelijk is en wat je moet doen om toegelaten te worden. Informatie over de toelatingseisen voor de verschillende masters en de adressen van de studieadviseurs vind je op de website van de faculteit.

Let op: het is niet mogelijk alvast met een masteropleiding te beginnen terwijl je je bacheloropleiding nog moet afronden! Alleen met een afgeronde bacheloropleiding ben je toelaatbaar.

Toelating en inschrijving

Veel masteropleidingen bieden aan afgestudeerden van (verwante) hbo-opleidingen de mogelijkheid om in te stromen. Je moet dan voor je de master kunt gaan doen een zogenaamd schakelprogramma voltooien.

Schakelprogramma’s na het hboBij sommige opleidingen kun je via een schakelprogramma, dat tussen de een en twee jaar duurt, een toegangscertificaat (voor één masteropleiding) of een wo-bachelordiploma (voor meerdere masteropleidingen) halen. Voor overstappen die vaak gemaakt worden, bestaan er standaard schakelprogramma’s. Wil je een combinatie maken die wat minder gebruikelijk is, dan betekent dat niet dat er geen mogelijkheden zijn, maar is een schakelprogramma vaak maatwerk. De twee opleidingen moeten overigens wel enigszins in elkaars verlengde liggen. Je kunt niet van bijvoorbeeld de PABO instromen in een master archeologie. Schakelen van hbo naar wo

Schakelprogramma’s tijdens het hboVoor sommige opleidingen kunnen hbo-studenten al tijdens het laatste studiejaar op het hbo een extra zwaar programma volgen dat hen voorbereidt op een universitaire masteropleiding. In dit verzwaarde programma halen studenten alvast 30 studiepunten van het schakeljaar. Bij een beperkt aantal opleidingen bestaat dan de mogelijkheid rechtstreeks door te stromen in de master, zonder te schakelen en zonder verder tijdverlies. In andere gevallen moeten studenten nog een kort schakelprogramma van nog eens 30 studiepunten volgen. Een en ander is afhankelijk van de gevolgde hbo-opleiding en de opleiding die je aan de RUG wilt volgen.

Afspraken met noordelijke hbo’sDe RUG heeft met noordelijke hbo-opleidingen afspraken over deze verzwaarde hbo-variant, bedoeld voor excellente studenten. Geïnteresseerden kunnen voor meer informatie contact opnemen met de studieadviseur van de eigen opleiding of met de studieadviseur van de gewenste masteropleiding aan de RUG.

CollegegeldHet collegegeld voor het studiejaar 2011–2012 bedraagt 1713 euro, wanneer je voldoet aan de volgende drie voorwaarden: 1. Je hebt nog niet eerder een bachelorgraad in het hbo of wo (als je je inschrijft voor een bacheloropleiding) of een mastergraad in het hbo of wo (als je je inschrijft voor een masteropleiding) behaald;2. Je woont in Nederland, België, Luxemburg of een van de Duitse deelstaten Noord-Rijnland-Westfalen, Nedersaksen of Bremen;3. Je hebt een EU/EER-nationaliteit of de Surinaamse nationaliteit (artikel 2.2 Wsf 2000). Voldoe je niet aan deze drie voorwaarden dan betaal je het veel hogere instellingscollegegeld, dat per opleiding kan verschillen. Let op: instellingscollegegeld mag niet in termijnen worden betaald! LangstudeerderstariefAls je te lang over je studie doet, d.w.z. als je meer dan een jaar vertraging oploopt in de bachelor- of in de masterfase, moet je naast het collegegeld een boete van 3.000 euro betalen. StudiefinancieringIedereen die gaat studeren heeft eenmalig recht op een basisbeurs voor de cursusduur van de opleiding. Onder cursusduur wordt doorgaans drie jaar bachelorfase en een jaar masterfase verstaan. Studenten die geen studievertraging hebben opgelopen, hebben dus nog gewoon recht op een basisbeurs tijdens de masteropleiding. Studenten die een tweejarige masteropleiding volgen, krijgen een extra jaar basisbeurs, omdat hun cursusduur een jaar langer is. Studenten die vanuit het hbo instromen en hun basisbeurs daar al hebben verbruikt, hebben tijdens het schakelprogramma en de eenjarige masteropleiding alleen nog recht op een rentedragende lening. Nota bene: het kabinet is van plan de basisbeurs in de masterfase af te schaffen. Als dat doorgaat heb je in de master-fase alleen nog recht op een aanvullende beurs (afhankelijk van het inkomen van je ouders) en een rentedragende lening. Recently, interest has been booming in topics related to the notions of Gnosticism, esotericism and mysticism, both in academic discourse and outside academia. The relevance of mystical and esoteric currents in the history of religion in Europe, as well as the impact of Hermetic and Gnostic spirituality, challenge monolithic narratives of European religious and cultural identities. The MA programme ‘Concealed Knowledge’ meets these challenges and offers a deeper analysis of the processes involved.

The programme is characterized by an approach that is internationally unique. You will › gain an awareness of the ancient and medieval roots of modern

esotericism › learn that religion in the West is pluralistic (including Judaism,

Christianity and Islam, but also paganism and other religious choices)

› critically engage the notion of the ‘West’ in terms of postcolonial debates and processes of globalization.

ALGEMENE INFORMATIE

Het levensbeschouwelijk veld is de laatste jaren sterk veranderd. Op heel verschillende

manieren zoeken mensen naar zin en levensoriëntatie. Van de geestelijk verzorger

wordt dan ook veel kennis en creativiteit verwacht om in te spelen op de huidige

zin- en levensvragen.

BELANGRIJKE VAKKEN› Geestelijke verzorging› Psychopathologie en religie› Ethiek in de gezondheidszorg

In de opleiding verwerven studenten kennis van de grote wereldgodsdiensten en levensbeschouwelijke tradities, van godsdienstpsychologie en psychopathologie, van ethiek en filosofie. Zij verdiepen zich in geestelijke en spirituele zorg in de hedendaagse samenleving en het functioneren van een geestelijk verzorger in een instelling. Belangrijk is de ontwikkeling van een eigen levensbeschouwelijke identiteit. De Groningse opleiding is echter niet gebonden aan één specifieke religie of levensbeschouwing. Studenten die willen gaan werken met een ambtelijke binding aan een levensbeschouwelijk genootschap, hebben aanvullende scholing nodig. De master is beroepsgericht en staat bekend om haar open, kritische en wetenschappelijke benadering van het werkveld van de geestelijke verzorging. Studenten lopen stage in een zorginstelling. Tijdens de opleiding maken zij kennis met actueel en relevant onderzoek naar de geestelijke verzorging en worden zij gestimuleerd zelf onderzoek te doen. Zij sluiten de opleiding af met het schrijven van een scriptie.

In contemporary discourse about religion, many people base their claims on particular perspectives on the origins and sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. To be able to assess modern claims and views, a thorough grounding in these traditions and an understanding of their origins is necessary. As a contested concept, the term Abrahamic Religions challenges us to consider what is shared, different or contested between the various expressions of Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions and the interactions between their adherents in different contexts in the ancient world.

In this degree programme you will learn about these pluriform traditions and contexts in their formative periods. How were sacred texts produced and transmitted? How did they transform and survive in shifting historical and cultural contexts? You will gain in-depth knowledge of the separate traditions and communities, analyse these in a comparative framework and gain a new understanding of their origins and interaction.

Religion, in particular Christianity, is omnipresent in the public domain of today’s Western World. At first sight this might seem exaggerated - don’t we live in a secular age, with religion largely privatized? However, religion has set a deep mark on our culture – in land- and cityscape, in art and architecture, and in our literary traditions. Christianity is also strongly manifest in the history of ideas. Domains such as human rights, liberty and democracy, and social structures including gender differences were all stimulated and shaped by Christianity. Even the very concept of secularity stems from Christian theology. The analysis of us living in a secular world is thus too unsophisticated to do justice to the relevance of the religious factor – in particular the influence of Christianity. The programme consists of three thematic courses (10 EC each), an internship (10 EC) and a thesis (20 EC, including a thesis training course). You will be provided with the necessary skills to analyse and assess the fundamental role of religion in Western Culture in history and today. This interdisciplinary programme offers a unique combination of cultural-historical and philosophical-conceptual approaches.

Honours College

De masterprogramma’s van de Faculteit Godgeleerdheid en Godsdienstwetenschap kenmerken zich door de gerichte aandacht op de dynamische verhouding tussen religie en cultuur, zowel in het heden als in het verleden.

In de facultaire masterprogramma’s maak je kennis met de dubbele verhouding tussen religie en cultuur. Enerzijds sluit religie aan bij cultuur en is er sprake van culturele inbedding en aanpassing (acculturatie). Anderzijds is er is een kritische distantie tussen beide.

De kwaliteit van het verzorgde onderwijs en het uitgevoerde onderzoek is toonaangevend. Het onderwijs vindt plaats in een monumentaal pand in het centrum van de stad, vlakbij de Universiteitsbibliotheek. De faculteit heeft een eigen studentenvereniging die elk jaar verschillende activiteiten organiseert.

Faculteit Godgeleerdheid en Godsdienstwetenschap

Aandacht voor de mens

Dat ik uiteindelijk de masteropleiding Geestelijke Verzorging zou gaan volgen had ik niet kunnen bedenken aan het begin van mijn studie. Ik ben begonnen met de opleiding Psychologie uit interesse voor wat mensen bezighoudt. Tijdens deze opleiding verschoof mijn interesse meer naar het spirituele en religieuze vlak. Daarom ben ik overgestapt naar de studie Godsdienstwetenschap. Na de bachelor wilde ik meer op persoonlijk niveau met religie in aanraking komen. Wat geeft mensen zin in het leven? Welke rol kan religie hierin spelen? En hoe kun je mensen hierbij begeleiden? Dit zijn voorbeelden van vragen die in de master Geestelijke Verzorging uitgebreid worden besproken.De opleiding in Groningen is van goede kwaliteit. De docenten zijn zeer betrokken bij het werkveld. Veel van hen hebben als geestelijk verzorger gewerkt; het blijft dus niet alleen bij theoretische kennis. Tijdens colleges is er door de kleine groepen veel ruimte voor vragen en dialoog. Daarbij neemt reflectie op de theorie een belangrijke plaats in. De stage is een belangrijk onderdeel van de master. Gedurende zes maanden werk je 12 uur per week mee op een zelfgekozen locatie. Het is leuk en spannend om het werkveld te betreden en te ervaren wat er speelt en wat het met je doet. Vanuit de opleiding word je intensief begeleid in alles wat je tijdens je stage tegenkomt. Reflecteren op je eigen levensbeschouwing speelt hierin ook een belangrijke rol. Al met al brengt de opleiding verdieping op zowel professioneel én persoonlijk vlak.

I chose Theology for the culturalhistory part

I really feel privileged studying here. All these great course units, the personal contact with the professors, and I am also given the freedom to focus on the topics that really interest me. I am particularly interested in cultural history – I just loveto bury myself in books and study literature and old source texts.

For my Bachelor’s thesis, I examined the diaries of an English Methodist preacher who went to America to evangelize. He was very successful, not only because he was so zealous but also because America was a great breeding ground for his message. After all, America was a place of refuge for many Europeans who were denied religious freedom at home. My thesis was part of the Religion in America course unit. This course unit and the thesis have helped me understand the important role of religion in the United States, including, for example, the religious language used by former presidents such as George Bush.

I originally started studying Pedagogy, but I soon felt that I was missing certain subjects, such as Greek and Latin. And I also wanted more philosophy and history components. Studying texts, analytical reasoning, Theology has it all. That’s whyI wanted to follow the Master’s degree programme at the Groningen faculty after my Bachelor’s.

The RM programme in Religion and Culture helps me to understand social tensions and look for ways to resolve them

Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on 9/11, Islam has been at the center of many debates. In many European countries the presence of Islamic symbols and rituals in the public domain is disputed. During my BA Religious Studies, I was already very motivated to understand these debates, as I believe that it is both worthwhile and necessary for academics to look for ways to resolve the social tensions related to these debates.To further my understanding on these matters, I decided to focus on the role religion plays in international relations, conflicts and peace building during my Research Master programme. Therefore I did four months of anthropological fieldwork on the fight of Religious NGOs against HIV/Aids in Kenya and Uganda. Furthermore, I am planning a research trip to Ambon, Indonesia, for my MA-thesis to learn from the peace building process there. This is exactly what I like about the programme in Groningen. It offers possibilities to be involved in subjects of your interest that are socially relevant in many different ways. What makes the master programme even better is the fact that you receive excellent supervision and guidance from your personal mentor. My mentor, Dr. Marjo Buitelaar, proved to be an excellent coach by advising me about practical, personal and academic choices related to the activities I undertake.

This MA is helping me understand minorities

Religion, Conflict and Globalisation appealed to me because I would like to help minorities identify their problems, analyze them and then find solutions to them. I therefore find the various perspectives on religion and culture that I learned aboutin Groningen very important. As a Bachelor’s student I conducted research at a university in Bangalore, India, where students from the north-eastern part of the country form a minority group. They are often discriminated against by other Indians and are sometimes not even recognized as Indians.As a Master’s student I am still focusing on minorities, but I am now doing a placement at the Dutch Council for Refugees. I support unaccompanied minor refugees in their asylum procedure and am involved in various practical and legal matters. The degree programme in Religion, Conflict and Globalisation helps me understand the Islamic background many of these refugees have, and to find solutions for their specific problems. During my placement I am also conducting researchinto the religious aspects of refugee aid. Humanitarian organisations often have a Christian background, whilemany refugees are Muslims. This evokes questions which I would like to answer – for example, how do refugeesview these Christian organisations? Does their Islamic background matter, and do refugees also turn to Islamicorganisations for help?I have been trained to observe people since my Bachelor’s degree programme in Religious Studies, which meansthat I am now able to accurately interpret people’s behavior and words. This will certainly help me in my workwith minorities.
