performing in off-

Broadway musicals with the Tada! Youth Theater in Lower Manhattan. She had

lead roles in three productions (Rabbit Sense, Sleepover, and Heroes) in addition to

performing as a soloist. Banks was trained in the performing arts at LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts

in Manhattan. At the age of sixteen, Banks starred in a production of the comedy-noir musical City of Angels, where she was found by an

agent and sent on auditions for TBS, Nickelodeon, and Law & Order, all without success. It was at this point that Banks decided to quit acting, citing the large amount

of competition and overall sense of unfulfillment as reasons for leaving. Because of this, Banks began writing rap and R&B songs as a creative outlet. She never finished high school, instead

choosing to follow her dream of becoming a recording artist.Under the moniker ‘Miss Bank$’, she released her debut recording “Gimme a Chance” onto the internet on November 9, 2008.The recording was accompanied by “Seventeen”, a track produced by American DJ Diplo which sampled the Ladytron song of the same name. Later that year, Banks signed to record

label XL Recordings and began working with producer Richard Russell; leaving the label later that year due to conflicting ideas.

2011–12: 1991 and Fantasea“Richard was cool, but as soon as I didn’t want to use his beats, it got real sour. He wound up calling

me ‘amateur’ and the XL interns started talking shit about me. It just got real fucking funny. I was like, ‘I didn’t come here for a date. I came here to cut some fucking records.’ I got turned off on the music

industry and disappeared for a bit. I went into a bit of a depression.” Banks talking of her departure from XL Recording.

EARLY LIFEStefani was born and raised in Fullerton, California, and grew up in a Roman Catholic household. She attended Loara High School inAnaheim, California. She was named after a stewardess in the 1968 novel Airport, and her middle name, Ren–e, comes from The Four Tops’ 1968 cover of The Left Banke’s 1966 hit song “Walk Away Ren–e”. Her father, Dennis Stefani, is Italian American and worked as a Yamaha marketing executive. Her mother, Patti (n–e Flynn), is of Irish and Scottish descent and worked as an accountant before becoming a homemaker. Gwen’s parents were fans of folk music and exposed her to music by artists like Bob Dylan andEmmylou Harris. She is the second oldest of four children: she has a younger sister, Jill Stefani, a younger brother, Todd, and an older brother, Eric. Eric was the keyboardist for No Doubt; he left the band to pursue a career in animation on The Simpsons on the Fox TV network.[8]Many of the women in Stefani’s family were seamstresses, and much of her clothing was made by them or her mother. In school, she was diagnosed with dyslexia. As a child, Stefani’s musical interests consisted of musicals such as The Sound of Music and Evita. After making a demo tape for her father, she was encouraged to take music lessons to train her “loopy, unpredictable” voice. Stefani made her onstage debut during a talent show at Loara High School, where she sang “I Have Confidence”, from The Sound of Music, in a self-made tweed dress inspired by one from the film. Stefani was on the Loara swim team in an attempt to lose weight. She first worked at a Dairy Queen and later manned the MAC makeup counter of a department store. After graduating from high school in 1987, she began attending Fullerton College before transferring to California State University, Fullerton.
