2 THE H A MILTONIAN.

we rejoice to sec among us any movement to increase and improve so delightful a means of enjoyment and profit.

I ssued by the Olass of l 86L

EDI T OR S .

CHARUS )!. DAVIS, FRAXK B. WlLLARD.

Since the last issue of THE H .unr.roxiAX the monotonous routine of College life has been attended by 'evrnt:; which rcn· der the year one of unusual interest, not oulv in what relates to the immediate internal organization of the Institution, but also in what relates to students us participators in the more extended organizt~tion of national forces.

Nor have we any fault to find with the monotonous routine of college duties. .An efficient corps of iush·uctor~ now made complete by the election of Prof. E\'AXS to the chair of Lnw nud Political Economy, have by their individual nud united efforts infused increasing life and energy into those under their charge, rendering those duties an object in themselves of pleasure as well as a means of discipline and future use.

:Meanwhile, the friends of the ln~titution hare not failed in the ~bsorhing whirl of rc\'olution, nnd in the pecuniary apprehenstou consequent thereon, to make depo~its in a fund sure of full and satisfactory returns. We learn from Dr. GoERT!"•:n that the finances of the College are in a most cnconragmg state.

During the past year, important changes ha>c been made in the two Literary Societies. 'J'he members of the Phcenix and Union found their libraries fast becominrr worthless on account of the constant loss of hooks; and no.., additions '~ere making from year to year. Pa~t neglect had accumulated debts which the state of their finances did not enal>le them to pay. They, tllCrefore, tran~ferrcd their libraries, in trust to the College, in consideration of the payment hy tho Colle"'~ of their debts. b

It need not be concealed that the Phcenix and Union Societies arc in a state of deadly inactivity. Circumstances have conspired to destroy intereRt in their debates. 'I'hc past year has been a time wh~n ~~~~have_ felt deeply, thought earnestly, UliU \;UU~t:lllll;llll.)' Wikl'U It'S, :\ U (iQulJt, JtuWC\"ef, the imporlanC~ of the object,; of these so<'ietie..;; will spredily awaken thetr members to a renewal of the means. And it is confidently expected that as soon as the societies reco\'er from the disorg~nizing: cffec~s of ~aukruptcy, _and factious ambition, they wtl~ be_gm ~gam thetr labors wtth increased energy, restore then l~brartcs, a~d ~nsurc success and harmony by basing their

I operations on_prmctples less open to corruption, or dcranEremcnt. But dtssolut10n seems to be the order of the day · ami perhops, we can look with hope to the patriotic sentim~nt of ~nity, w_hieh beginning and growing in love of country, shall m due ttmc restore order and usefulness to the distracted elements of our Societies.

The qu~ctness and isol~tion of our situation bas not prc~ent_e~ thts common seutuuent of patriotism from reaching and ~nspmng our ~tudcnts i. ~nd that inspimtion has expressed tts~lf not only tn f1ag-r~usmg and speech-making, but in actunl cnhstment to the a1·my of the Union.

1'he ft!AYNAnn Professorllhip of IJn.w and Political Economy was vacated by P rof. T. W. Dwwnr, in the fall of 1858; and since that time the L aw School has not hrcn in operation. The election of l'rof. ELLicon E\"AXS to the ) f AYSARD Profc. :;or,;hip, has ensured the n.'-Opcning of that important department at the beginning of the next College year.

Prof. E\"AXS will enter upon his duties with the highest recommendations of ability and adttptivcness. A graduate of Harvard, and succcssin~ly a student of the Harvard and P hiladelphia Law ~chools, liis thorough preparation has brrn enlarged and strengthened by years of carPful discipline ; and he brin~ as an important auxiliary to lrgnl studies ~uch 1\ profound and varied knowledge of history as but few men po~se:;s.

It is confidently expected that the Law School of Hamilton College will be behind that of no other in the land.

The class of 'li 1 is the last cln~s which dates its entrance before the election of President F1~11Er.. .\. new 1'1'rJime has taken the place of good old custom,; tlu~t htul cxi~tcd from lime whereof the memory of num runneth not to the contrary. 'L'hat memorable euHtom of subjecting unfortunate Freshmen to a fumigative process, technically called "Rmoking out," has become a ghostly tradition which frightens but never harm~.

Of course, in ~o large a. holly of individuals many faults and frailties incitlent to human nature arc alway~ apparent. As a means of reform, student~; have consider('d satire the most convenient and effective. .\nd it is not without regret, therefore, that we obserre thP :\ttempted suppression by the Faculty of "Burlc~que Schemes." Colle~c is eminently the place to lop ofl' disagreeable cxt•rcscences from charncter, and he who carries them through the course into life may be set down as incorri~iblc. A free pre1is is the only purifier of college conduct. ~till, Hamilton College is increl\singly prosperous; and we hare noticed no e~pecial retrogression in individual and social character among the student~.

And as we lcnre the "classit• ~hndes" of our loving Alma Mater, we go with the regrets of tho~e who cannot forget the ndvantages of healthy moral ~tnd mental training she has aft'orded us, and the many ple1tsing, memorial asRoeiations we h:we there form eel and enjoyNl ; and in the whirl of exciting creuts and thr changes which mu~t follow so momentous circumstances, we shall often look back to the e,·cr beautiful hillside of old H amilton as the !ipot where we passed four of the most delightful years of our lives.

Sixty-one I Portuuate as we nrc in living at a time so fr1wght with imp01·tant iutc::'J<lt~. we nrc .;till mor~> fortunate in entering upon the arena of active life, when inCYitaLlc forces are uphenriug into plain view the vh·c nnd corruption of society, and the real dborJranizinEr element,; of governments. P rofiting by the le!>sons thus opportunely taught u~, we should in whatever character we shnll he placed, meet events only in the spirit of tlmt motto we cho~c to guide us as a class-" ~il nobis arduum."

Half a century hence, our countrymen, in view of the manner their ancestors had risen in defense of the nation's integ· rity, will Rpenk of the spirit of "sixty-one :" Mny the year of our graduation be auspicious of our fame.

~I ARR I E D .

In the ea~ly part of the presrnt term, a beautiful flag, stnrt'pangled, tn~olored, was floated from the lofty tower of the Chapel, with the U'~ual accompaniment of ::;peechcs and firinrr of cannon. The feeling with us was no short lived outbur.:l of fOuthful enthu~>iasm, but l\ permanent, growing determinatton to art. Ten Hamiltonians are now in the number of their country's defenders ; nud if ~uch a movement shall prove necessary, Hnmilton College will be willing and ready to march in a body to share the fortunes of our country.

In Sandy llill, wn~hington Co., Alii(. 22<1, 1860, by R!'v. SA~nr:L w F1snER. D. D., Rt•v. A}lSON .J. Ul'80~, Prof. of IUwloric, llnmillon College. to )fb~ LYDIA WE....;TO~ Jo\\.RLL"{, cltml(htcr of the 11\le Rev. J. W. F.I.RI.I\, Warrensburl(h. ~- Y.
