Understanding Bibliometrics: From citations to ‘h- index’ - Updating research evaluation

Dr Tejaswini Vallabha and Dr Kusal Das addressing the Workshop

The Scientific Academic Research Society (SARS) and Central Library organized workshop and address on “Understanding Bibliometrics: From citations to ‘h- index’ updating research evaluation” and arranged for the demonstration on creating Google Scholar and Research Gate profile, on 7th June 2014.

Keynote address was given by Dr. Kusal K Das, Professor of Physiology, BLDE University’s Shri. B M Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Bijapur.

Dr. Das explained about the research evaluation, its need, how to evaluate Research, UGC evaluation pattern of research, meaning of Bibliometrics, Citations, importance of citations, citation analysis, sources for citation information, how to improve citations, citation evaluation, h-index and its calculation, criteria for world ranking of universities and world ranking methodologies.

Demonstration and Hands on training on Research Gate and Google Scholar and creating individual profile on these databases was given by Shri Satish G Patil, Lecturer Dept. of Physiology and Smt. Manjula Librarian respectively.

There were 90 participants for the Lecture. 29 Faculties had registered and 27 attended the workshop.

MOOT COURT

Moot Court is an innovative co-curricular activity conducted by Department of Forensic Medicine on April 05, 2014, in which participants take part in simulated court proceedings, which usually involves drafting briefs (or memorials) and participating in oral argument. Moot court does not involve actual testimony by witnesses or the presentation of evidence, but is focused solely on the application of the law to a common set of evidentiary assumptions to which the competitors must be introduced.

Under Graduate Counseling

The University conducted an All India Entrance Test, BLDEU-UGET-2014 on May 25, 2014 at twelve test centers all over India, i.e. Bijapur, Hubli, Mangalore, Bangaluru, Chennai,

Mumbai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Trivandrum, Kolkata, Ranchi and New Delhi. Total 2764 candidates applied, 2125 candidates appeared out of them

1310 candidates were eligible.First round of counseling was held on June 20 & 21, 2014. Total 112 candidates opted for UG

seats. Second round of counseling is scheduled on July 31, 2014.

Student writes…

I am very happy to write about BLDE University. I had heard about this university and college and always wanted to work or study in this institution. My dream came true when I got seat to pursue PhD Anatomy in this university.

Department of Anatomy is very welcoming. HOD is very co-operative and all staff has been supportive. The department also provides excellent research facility, and a very well established museum.

University: When I shifted, on personal grounds the university also supported by allowing me to continue my research work at my new location. The staff members in university office have also been very co-operative.

I also remember once, when many PhD scholars came from distant locations for course work-study for two months, the university extended warm hospitality by arranging accommodation in the hostel. This I can ascertain was extremely helpful for all the participants.

Though I miss working directly in the college and university, I am grateful for allowing me to continue my research. I consider myself lucky to have got an opportunity to study in this reputed university.
