COACHING STAFF

Jaime Steward of Blackwood, a former pitcher in the Anaheim Angels organization, begins his fourth season asan assistant coach at Rider.

“Jaime was an excellent addition to our staff,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “He has been successful at everylevel and has pitched for championship teams at the high school and college level.”

“I am very excited to be a part of the Rider Baseball Program,” said Steward. “Coach Davis is a proven winnerand I am constantly learning from him.”

Steward is a 1997 graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School and a 2001 graduate of Le Moyne College. AtLe Moyne Steward graduated as the career leader in strikeouts and innings pitched, and was drafted in the 39thround by the Angels.

“As a former player in the MAAC, this is familiar territory for me,” Steward said. The 2001 Le Moyne Athlete of the Year, Steward was the MAAC Pitcher of the Year in 1999, after earning

MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in 1998. At Gloucester Catholic Steward earned All-State and honorable men-tion All-America honors as a senior, leading his team to a national ranking of fifth.

“I have high expectations for our pitching staff as we work toward regaining the MAAC Championship,” Steward said. After two years in the Angels’ organization Steward pitched for the Camden River Sharks and the Atlantic City Surf, and was selected as

the starting pitcher in the 2005 Atlantic League South Division All-Star game. “That experience brings instant credibility to our pitching pro-gram,” Davis said. “I am looking forward to working with him this year.”

A pair of 2011 graduates, Karl Johnston and Jeff Giordano, return to their almamater to assist the Bronc coaching staff this year.

Johnston played three seasons at Rider, two as a starter, and compiled 119 hitsand 104 runs scored while making 105 starts in the Rider outfield. A career .287hitter, Johnston was 46 of 53 stolen bases in his career and had a fielding percent-age of .977 in right field.

Johnston came to Rider following a year at the New Mexico Military Institute. At the Peddie School Johnston earn Prep School All-State honors and was his teamMVP, setting the Peddie school record for stolen bases. He also earned Prep SchoolAll-State honors in football as a defensive back. As a junior at Rider Johnstonstarted every game and scored a team-high 24 runs in 24 MAAC games. As asenior Johnston collected his 100th hit in his 92nd start.

Giordano made 45 appearances on the Rider mound, 43 in relief, and owned a 3-1 record with a pair of saves in 77 innings of work.Last year opponents batted just .225 against “Gio” in 19 appearances. As a junior he pitched in the 2010 NCAA Regional and as a senior he owned the best earned run average on the 2011 team and was

second on the team in appearances.Giordano was an All-State selection in baseball at Massapequa (NY) High School and also earned All-County honors in track & field and

was an All-Conference defender on the soccer team.

OUTLOOK

Page 8

The Great Unknown. With the loss of two pitchers to the pros, four infielders who grad-

uated among the program’s top 15 career hitters, three in the top 15in career RBI and two in the top 15 in runs scored, the 2012 RiderBroncs will have a new look this year.

“Not one of our catchers has caught a game for us, our middle in-field hasn’t played a game for us yet, and some of the pitchers we’ll becounting on haven’t pitched for us yet,” said Rider head coach BarryDavis. “It will be like 2008 all over again in a lot of ways. That teamhad a lot of young unknowns but got better and better as the seasonwent on.”

The young 2008 Broncs reached the .500 mark at the end of theseason, finished fourth to qualify for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Con-ference tournament, and won the championship to advance to theNCAA Regional in Fullerton, California. Many of the 2008 freshmenbecame four-year starters, graduating last season.

Now the cycle begins again. The 2012 Broncs have 10 freshmen on the roster, many of which

will start or play major roles this season. The strength of the Rider squad this year, on paper anyway, is the

pitching. “Definitely, experience wise,” Davis confirmed. “They haveto stay healthy for us to be successful. We have a lot of pitchers whoare capable. It is the ones who take advantage of the opportunity whenit comes up that will help us.”

Leading the mound corps this year is third-year sophomore MikeMurphy, a pro prospect who red-shirted last season. “Murphy willstart game one,” Davis said of the hard-throwing right-hander. “He’slooked good. He’s come back from the injury and his velocity is there. We’re counting on him to be the guy to give us six, seven innings.”

Murphy won four games as a rookie before sitting out the 2011season. “He’s ready and has been waiting for two years,” Davis said.“He has a good fastball, slider, and cutter. He has a chance to be agood one.”

Also returning to the mound in a starting role will be fifth-yearsenior Patrick Devlin and junior Joe Calogero.

Devlin is a veteran of 40 games, including 30 starts, and has 13victories. “Devlin will pitch the second game of the season and thesecond game of the three-game MAAC series,” Davis said. “He’spitched in a lot of games, pitched in some big games (2008 and 2010MAAC Tournaments). There is nothing he should see that he hasn’tseen before. He has a very good curve ball.”

Rider was 7-4 in the 11 games Calogero started last season.“Calogero was thrown into the third spot when we had some injuries,”Davis said of his third starter. Calogero was third on the team in in-nings pitched last year. “This year he has earned the right to be there. He throws strikes keeping guys off balance.”

Devlin and Calogero are both left-handed. “Two lefties in topthree. I think that’s good,” Davis said. “I know we’ve struggledagainst lefties in the past.”

The fourth and fifth starters will come from a number of candi-dates, including freshmen Kurt Sowa and Zach Mawson, junior TimHogan and sophomore Kyle Kennett.

Sowa is a 6’4” right-hander who earned All-Philadelphia CatholicLeague honors last year at Father Judge. Mawson is a lefty who earned

All-State (Delaware) honors at Caesar Rodney. Rider was 2-0 in thegames Hogan pitched last year and Kennett went 4-0 as a rookiestarter last year.

“We start the season with a pair of four-game series so we will belooking for the fourth starter right off the bat,” Davis said. “Sowa andHogan will fight for that fourth starter role. Mawson could step in andbe a starter, along with Kennett. Hogan has been waiting for an op-portunity and he’ll get it this year. From those seven we will find ourstarters.”

To find the back end of the bull pen, Coach Davis needs to look nofarther than junior Tyler Smith.

A Preseason Second Team All-America selection by the CollegeBaseball Writers Association, Smith earned All-East honors lastseason and was named the MAAC and the New Jersey Closer of theYear in 2011. He finished 10th in the nation in saves with a Rider-record 15 and opponents batted .190 against him. “His numbers speakfor themselves,” Davis said. “He understands his role. He’s been as goodas it gets. We’ve gotten a few relief pitcher of the year awards withTyler and Jamie Hayes ’09 before him. It’s a nice feeling to know if wehave the lead in the eighth inning we feel pretty good about winningthe game. The last three outs are the toughest to get and he gets them.”

The ‘bridge’ between Smith and the starters will be made up of anumber of pitchers, including junior Chris Taylor, junior SeanKuberiet, freshman David Hafer, red-shirt freshman Mike Campbelland Julian Anapolsky.

Taylor has pitched in 28 games and owns a 4-1 career record. Heowned the fourth best earned run average on the team last year.Kuberiet has pitched in 19 games for the Broncs. Hafer is a 6’3” left-hander and Campbell red-shirted last year.

“Hafer has a lot of movement on his ball and we’re going to counton him to help us,” Davis said. “He also has a good breaking ball. He’s deceptive. Hafer and Taylor could be our bridge. Kuberiet hasalso looked good. We have a lot of guys we can bring in to get threeouts, between our starters and closer. Campbell has improved morethan anyone on the team. He has an unhittable slider if he gets aheadin the count. Anapolsky will add depth.”

The outfield will have the most experience on the team, returninga pair of MAAC and New Jersey award winners in senior BrandonCotten and sophomore Nick Crescenzo.

A ‘five-tool’ player, Cotten was a First Team All-MAAC selectionin 2011, was on the MAAC All-Tournament team in 2010, andearned All-New Jersey honors both years. He is a career .331 hitterand his defense is second to none. “Cotten has been the best defensiveoutfielder in the MAAC for two years,” Davis said, “and he can dosome things offensively as well. He will bat third for us.”

Crescenzo was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American andthe 2011 MAAC and New Jersey Rookie of the Year, earning SecondTeam All-MAAC honors. He collected his 50th hit in just his 38thstart. “Crescenzo will bat leadoff and play left or right field,” Davissaid. “He can really run and we are going to turn him loose on thebases.”

The third outfield spot will be manned by junior Ian Lindsay andsophomore Jerry Mulderig, while rookie pitcher Zach Mawson couldalso see action in the outfield, depending on his pitching workload.

Page 9: Ken Kremer 28 P Senior 6’0” 150 lbs Patrick Devlin 44 P Freshman 6’4” 170 lbs Eric Thomas 5 3B Junior 6’1” 190 lbs Adam Wayman 12 P/OF Freshman 6’0” 150 lbs Zach Mawson

Page 9

Lindsay was the fourth outfielder last year and made 16 starts.Mulderig batted .333 against MAAC pitching last year. “Mulderigand Lindsay will be our third and fourth outfielders,” Davis said.“Lindsay can really hit but his start has been slowed by mono duringthe off-season. Jerry has worked hard and will get an opportunity thisyear. Jerry is a very good defensive outfielder with a good arm, isathletic and can run. Mawson could be the fifth outfielder. He’s veryfast and depending on how much he pitches will determine how muchoutfield time he sees.”

The infield will have a new look, with junior Adam Wayman theonly returnee at third base. Wayman enters his junior year with 103hits, 71st on Rider’s career hit list. He batted .338 against MAACpitchers in 2011 after batting .330 against MAAC pitchers in 2010.

Graduate student Ryan Murphy will take over at first base, afterMason Heyne graduated with the career RBI record along with thefourth most hits (247) in program history. “Murphy will start theseason at first base,” Davis said. “He played behind two guys who areamong our career leaders in hits but will get his chance this year. He’searned the opportunity to start the season at first, and could see someaction in the outfield if needed.”

Freshman Justin Thomas will back up both Murphy at first andWayman at third. “Justin will back Murph up,” Davis said. “The twocould platoon, since Murph is lefty and Justin is right-handed. Way-man is coming off a slight shoulder injury so Thomas can help at thirdas well.”

The middle infield graduated John Ralston and A.J. Albee, whoturned over 100 double plays in the last three years and combined for400 hits in their careers. “Albee and Ralston played a lot of games,”Davis said.

Filling those large shoes will be freshmen Greg Fazio and MikeParsons, with freshman Troy Miller backing up both of them. Fazioearned First Team Skyland Delaware All-Conference honors as a short-stop and was named to the Courier News All-Area First Team as wellas First Team All-Somerset County honors helping Ridge HighSchool win the Somerset County Championship last year.

Parsons earned First Team All-League and All-CNY as a senior, leading Liverpool (NY) High to the League and Sectional Champi-onships.

“I feel Parsons and Fazio could develop into a ‘d.p.’ combo equalto Ralston and Albee,” Davis said. “They sure are working at it.Parson possesses above average speed and is a versatile player. Helikely will bat second and will play second. Fazio, who also has aboveaverage speed, will start the season at shortstop. Troy Miller can backup both of them.”

Miller was the YAIAA Division II Player of the Year as a senior atSusquehannock (PA) leading his team in batting average (.500), hits, home runs, RBI, total bases and on base percentage. A fine all-aroundathlete, Miller also played football (quarterback, cornerback) in highschool.

Sophomore Ken Kremer started 28 games behind the plate as arookie after being a middle infielder in high school and will see mostof his playing time at second or third this year.

Behind the plate this season will be freshman Eric Strano, juniortransfer Richie Garcia and senior Chris Pierfy.

Strano earned First Team All-Area, All-CVC and was a CarpenterCup selection as a senior, leading Robbinsville to the Mercer CountyTournament Championship, and was twice a Second Team All-CVCpick (sophomore and junior).

“Strano will catch game one,” Davis said. “He has all the tools tobe a very good catcher and a great work ethic to go with his skills.”

Garcia comes to Rider from Dean College, and was an All-Countyselection at Valley Stream North High School. Garcia’s brother EvanGarcia ’05 was a pitcher for the Broncs.

“Garcia has played in some college games and will back Strano up,”Davis said. “Pierfy, a career .500 hitter, is one of the four seniors on theteam. He’s worked very hard and could DH along with Kremer.”

The schedule begins in mid-February with trips to Virginia (Nor-folk State), North Carolina (Appalachian State, Campbell), and SouthCarolina (Charleston Southern, Winthrop). “We play 18 gamesbefore the MAAC season starts so we should have our rotationfigured out by then,” Davis said. “Hopefully we’ll be better on May1 than we are on March 1. That’s our goal, to improve as the seasongoes on. The schedule is challenging. I think it will prepare us forthe MAAC season.”

Rider has made the MAAC playoffs five times in the last six sea-sons, including the last four, winning the Championship in 2008 and2010.

“Our goal this year, as always, is to make the four-team MAACtournament,” Davis said. “I think the conference is wide open thisyear, with no prohibited favorite. Hopefully we’ll be peaking at theend of the regular season and go into the tournament as a hot team. The work ethic has been very good in the fall and preseason.”

Despite the fear of the unknown.
