Als… dan.. 2 voorbeelden

If I had more time, I would help you with your homework.

Wat betekent: Als ik meer tijd had, (dan) zou ik je helpen met je huiswerk.

If he had a girlfriend, he would give her flowers.

Wat betekent: Als hij een vriendin had, (dan) zou hij haar bloemen geven.

De zin hoeft niet te beginnen met if, het kan ook halverwege de zin staan.

My sister would join the party if she didn’t have to work.

Wat betekent: Mijn zus zou naar het feestje komen als ze niet hoefde te werken.

They wouldn’t understand my answer if I didn’t explain it.

Wat betekent: Ze zouden mijn antwoord niet begrijpen als ik het niet had uitgelegd.

Het verschil met if vooraan of halverwege in de zin?

Niet in de betekenis, maar…

halverwege de zin betekent dat je geen komma gebruikt.
