First held in July, 1905, the Speed Trials started at Black Rock andfinished at tbe Aquarium. They were restarted in 1932 and continued to1938. In 1946 the event became International and the half-mile coursewas extended to a kilometre.
Once again the Annual Brighton Speed Trials has received its usuallarge entry and on going through the programme we notice that thebeautifully made R.W.G. driven by its constructor R. W. Greenwood isclassed with the speedy Fiat driven by Le Strange Metcalfe in Class I.
Class 2 contains well known cornpeutors such as H. Lester andGerry Ruddock on Lester M.G.'s the last named having only recentlyscored a record in the II litre class of the 9-Hours Race at Goodwood whilstrunning ro team orders, Peter Gammon drives a very sprightly M.G. inthis Class so competition will be good.
Class 3 has at least tWOcars to be watched, namely the well knownAston Martin of E. Stapleton and Beckwith Smith's Frazer-Nash,whilst the Class for cars over 2500 c.e. (unsupercharged) has one of thebiggest collections of XK 120 Jaguars we have seen, others who should showup well include Scragg with the Jaguar engined Alta, Rob. Walker withthe D.B. 2 Aston, R. C. Symondson, G. Gale, J. Goodhew and the"Voice of them all" in person - Peter Cavanagh.
In the supercharged Spores Car Classes WI: are pleased to see theH.S.M. of Peter Merric and it will be inrcrest ing to sec how GordonParkers new twin-blower Jaguara fares against the Jaguette now drivenby W. Coleman.
In the Racing Car Classes, Kieft, Iota, Cooper, Marwin and J.B.S -,are well represented by capable drivers ulrhough the exisring record will behard to better in this 500 c.c. event.
We are pleased to see that famous Austin of J. W. Broad whichmany will remember when it was driven by A. N. McLachlan in the 750 e.c.Class and "Pathfinder" Bennett with his Cooper in the 1100 c.c. Class.
In the Formula I Class we welcome F. Ie Gallais from Jersey whodrives a rear engined Special with an XK 120 engine, Allan Rippon shouldbe watched in the Formula II Class whilst in Formula Libre we see"Father" Cooper in a new Cooper doing battle with Peter Stubberfieldthe Bugatti exponent and Ted Lloyd Jones with his "Triangle FlyingSaucer."
Vintage Racing Cars follow and include S. E. Sears' T.T. Sunbeamand C. W. P. Hampton's Bugatti, both of which are well known.
Last but not least the Ladies, this Class is well supported this year andIt is surely a sign of the popularity of the Speed Trials when we see tbemdriving such a variety of cars as Cooper, Jaguar and Lester M.G. to mentiononly three.
14

F. E. TAYLOR (Woking) 998 c.c. TAYLOR/VINCENT-This machine isa more or less standard racing Vincent Black Lightning and has proveditself to be extremely potent on a numberof occasions. NOEL B. POPE (Surblton) 998 c.c. COMERFORD/POPE SPECIAL-Nod Pope: of course needs no introduction, his latest successes includethe raising of the 10 Kilometres Sidecar and 3-wheeler record to106 m.p.h. and also the Montlhery track record for this class of machineto a speed of Ill. 7 m.p.h It is anticipated rhat the machine he will uscwill be one of those he took to ,viontlhery recently and it is envisagedthat this will be the Supercharged version, and may confidently beexpected to be the fastest machine participating.
