First milestone in the SME innovation cycle

SME tests new technologies and solutions without financial investment

If the test results fit with their expectations in terms of innovation, SME can then engage further collaborations with technology holders

There is no ties attached. The goal is that the SME has a better understanding of the technology capability

Test a new concept for small lot production Cooperative Foundry Concept. RTOs have built components/parts of systems, i.e. building blocks, which are available and characterised by their high Technology Readiness Level (TRL).Combine these building blocks in so-called Application Experiments (AEs), creating innovative Smart Systems which serve SMEs' needs.

Example: Demonstrator named UbeesenseSME beneficiary: Laulagun bearingsRTO that contribute: Ikerlan

The RTO, Ikerlan, has already developed a prototype that could fit, with small adaptation, in the use case identified by Laulagun.

The collaboration is directly between Ikerlan and Laulagun. Ikerlan has a limited budget to adapt the existing prototype to fulfill, as much as possible, the requirements. This modifications take around 4-5 months, then, Laulagun tests the device along 3 months

The solution provided by Ikerlan intends to validate a product concept. In case the test phase done by Laulagun covers his expectations, further development, not covered by Gateone, is expected to happen.

The Objective

Monitoring of bearings for wind turbines

Use case in a Gateone

Demonstrator

Consists of a sensor node and a concentrator. The sensor node performs measurements and sends the data wirelessly to the concentrator which is connected to a PC for data visualization. Includes:

•Control electronics: 3 PCB layers(signal conditioning/data processing/RF comm.)• Sensors: accelerometer, strain gage and temperature.•A housing for the sensor node.•A concentrator for wireless signal acquisition and USB connection to a PC.•A software code to modify sensing parameters and visualizing the results

Tests performed in the Test Center of Laulagun Bearings, show that the wireless signal is transmitted from inside the rotor hub, where the sensor node is located and monitors the state of the bearings, to outside the structure, where the concentrator is located

Technical achivement

Inside the hub, when the pitch is moving

Temperature measurements at different locations of the hub

The demostrator includes: A thermocycler, hotplate size 1x1cm on flexible PCBESE-LOG 2-wavelength fluorescence unit Control electronics (PCB)USB connection to a PC and connection to mainsAn interface for thermocycling and detection settings

Use case in a GateoneDemonstrator

Test showing Fluorescence data with Alphasipprotocol

It is a subpart of the whole system.

Performs thermal cycling(RT-100ºC) to a single microchamber(10ml).

Allows the company to adapt the in-tube parameters to the microchamber and optimize its yield

Example: Demonstrator named Microthermos. SME beneficiary: Alphasip.

The Objective

Test a rapid microthermal concept

Example: AE named Clutsen. SME beneficiary: Goizper.RTOs that contribute: Ikerlan(IKL) and Hahn-Schickard(HS)

HS contributes in energy harvesting and low power communication. IKL contributes in sensors and signal conditioning, embedded electronics and packaging. The partners need to collaborate in a common planning, typically 2years, and adapt their technology(building blocks) in order to fulfill final development requirements. The solution is clearly product oriented and finishing level of an industrial prototype. RTO partners commit that they have manufacturing capacity to respond to first and limited number of samples from the SME.

The Objective

Monitor the wear of clutch-brake pads and measure maximum temperature at friction point while clutching. Features: Sensor integration in a wheel ensuring direct measurement; Low power electronics; Energy harvesting and Wireless data transfer

Use case in Smarter-SI Application

Experiment(AE)
