De vierde Gassan Gazette is een feit. Wederom is er met veel plezier aan gewerkt en wij hopen dat deze

uitgave met net zoveel enthousiasme wordt ontvangen als de vorige 3 edities.

Er hebben opnieuw flink wat activiteiten plaatsgevonden rondom Gassan. Om te beginnen melden wij

u met gepaste trots dat per 12 september jl. de eerste online boutique van Gassan geopend is. Wij

nodigen u van harte uit een kijkje te nemen in onze mooie webwinkel.

Verder is o.a. de juwelenlijn ‘Gassan by Danie’ met veel persaandacht gelanceerd en maakte Gassan

Dam Square onderdeel uit van de eerste Amsterdamse versie van de Vogue Fashion’s Night Out.

Alle nieuwste collecties voor het komende seizoen zijn alweer volop aanwezig in onze winkels en alle

nouveautés van de vooraanstaande horloge- en juwelenmerken zullen, zoals u van ons gewend bent,

vertegenwoordigd zijn op de LXRY Masters (v/h Miljonair Fair) die alweer voor de deur staat. Natuurlijk

zullen ook enkele spraakmakende primeurs wederom niet ontbreken!

The fourth Gassan Gazette is here and hot off the press! It was an enjoyable project again and we hope

that this publication is as enthusiastically received as the previous 3 editions.

Once again there has been lots of activity around Gassan. To start with we would proudly like to inform

you that as of the 12th of September the first online Gassan Boutique was opened. We would like to

invite you to take a look at our beautiful on-line store.

Furthermore the jewellery line ´Gassan by Danie´ was launched with much press attention and made

Gassan Dam Square part of the first Amsterdam version of the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out.

All the latest collections for the upcoming season are already fully available in our stores and all the

novelties of the leading watch and jewellery brands will, as you have come to expect from us, be

represented at the LXRY Masters (formerly known as the Millionaire Fair) which is coming up again very

soon. And of course, once again, with some high-profile premieres!

We would like to take the opportunity to emphasize how pleased we are with the support of all our

great brands to make this possible.

The jewellery themes ´Indigenuity´ and ´Ecomagination´ stand out in this publication.

With these trends the combination of yellow, white and rose gold jewellery take preference and are

used in combination with various prints.

Voor het gewicht gebruiken we de term ‘karaat’. De naam karaat is afkomstig van de zaden van de johannesbroodboom, die al honderden jaren gebruikt worden om exact hetzelfde gewicht weer te geven. Deze zaden hebben een gewicht van 0,2 gram.

For the weight we use the term ‘carat’. The name carat originates from the seeds of the Carob tree, which has been used for hundreds of years for their exact same weight. Those seeds all have a weight of 0.2 gram.

Carat

Diamanten komen in allerlei kleuren voor, variërend van bruin tot opvallend geel, roze tot paars, rood en blauw. Dit zijn de zogenaamde ‘fancy kleuren’. Kleurloze diamant lijkt met het blote oog inderdaad kleurloos, maar bij nader inzien kunnen ze een gele of bruine tint hebben. De kleurgraad van een diamant wordt bepaald door vergelijking met een reeks ‘master stones’. De hoogste kwaliteit wordt gegeven aan een kleurloze diamant. Naast kleur wordt de fluorescentie van een diamant ook ingedeeld. Bepaalde diamanten reageren op ‘black light’, met cijfers die variëren van nihil, licht, medium of sterk tot zeer sterk.

Diamonds occur in all sorts of colours, ranging from brownish to striking yellow, pink to purple, red and blue. These are called ‘fancy colours’. Colourless diamonds may look colourless to the naked eye, but upon closer inspection may show that they have a yellowish or brownish hue. The colour grade of a diamond is determined by comparison with a series of master stones. The highest grade is given to a colourless diamond. Besides colour, the fluorescence of a diamond is also graded. Certain diamonds react to ‘black light’, with grades varying from nil, slight, medium or strong to very strong.

Colour

Elke diamant is uniek. Als je kijkt naar de helderheid van de diamant kan je sporen van zijn groeigeschiedenis terugvinden. Die sporen vormen de vingerafdruk van de diamant. Bijna alle diamanten hebben in ieder geval een klein spoor van niet gekristalliseerde koolstof of andere mineralen. De meeste van deze insluitsels zijn niet zichtbaar voor het blote oog, maar kunnen wel gezien worden door een loep die 10 keer vergroot. Hoe minder insluitsels een diamant heeft, hoe hoger de waarde van de diamant. Een diamant waarbij de insluitsels niet te zien zijn, is zeldzaam en wordt ook wel ‘perfect’ of ‘loupe clean’ genoemd. Het is dus mogelijk dat een kleinere, perfect geslepen diamant van een wittere kleur en perfecte helderheid meer waard is dan een grotere steen die minder wit is en meer insluitsels heeft.

Each diamond is unique. A close look at its clarity shows traces of its growth history. Those traces form a fingerprint of the diamond. Almost all diamonds have a minimal trace of not crystallised carbon or other minerals. Most of these inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, but can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass. The less inclusions a diamond has, the higher the diamond value. One that does not show any inclusions is rare and is called ‘perfect’ or ‘loupe clean’. It is therefore possible for a smaller but perfectly cut diamond of a whiter colour and flawless clarity to be more valuable than a larger stone that is less white and has more inclusions.

Een diamant kan geslepen worden in verschillende vormen, zoals een briljant, Gassan 121, square, pear of heart. De ronde briljant is waarschijnlijk de meest bekende vorm. Een slijpvorm is perfect als de verhoudingen, symmetrie en het polijsten allemaal perfect zijn.De verhoudingen zijn bepalend voor de schittering, vuur en dispersie. A diamond can be cut in various shapes, such as a brilliant, Gassan 121, square, pear or heart. The round brilliant is probably the best-known shape. A diamond’s cut is perfect when proportions, symmetry and polish are all perfect. The proportions are determinative for their brilliance, fire, and dispersion. The symmetry describes the variations of the different parameters, which define the proportions. The polish describes the finish of the facets.

Steve Bierman (49) is de diamantinkoper van Gassan, al 25 jaar werkzaam bij Gassan Diamonds en grondlegger van de Gassan 121 diamant. Hij leerde het vak van zijn grootvader.

WAAr KOMT DE vOOrlIEfDE vOOr DIAMANT vANDAAN?Mijn grootvader, de heer van Moppes, was diamantair. In de vakanties werkte ik bij hem en zo ontstond mijn interesse voor het diamantvak. Nadat ik van school kwam heb ik 1,5 jaar lang bij verschillende bedrijven gewerkt in de diamantsector. Daar leerde ik onder andere tekenen, zagen en slijpen.HOE lANG BESTAAT DE GASSAN 121?De Gassan 121 is gelanceerd tijdens de Miljonair fair in december 2005, in de prachtige stand van Gassan.HOE BEN JE OP HET IDEE GEKOMEN?Ik werkte inmiddels al lange tijd bij Gassan en vond het belangrijk om in deze tijd waarin branding een belangrijke rol speelt, Nederlands bekendste diamantslijperij op de kaart te zetten met een eigen gepatenteerde steen. Na drie jaar research te hebben gedaan ben ik uitgekomen op de Gassan 121. Na diverse tekeningen en modellen gemaakt te hebben, heb ik in samenwerking met het WTOCD, het onderzoekscentrum van de Hoge raad voor Diamant, laten controleren of er op deze manier optimale lichtopbrengst en schittering gegeneerd werd. Dat bleek zo te zijn waarna wij voor dit model gekozen hebben. vervolgens zijn wij direct naar een reclamebureau gegaan met de vraag voor deze steen een passende naam te bedenken. Het reclamebureau gaf aan dit één van hun makkelijkste opdrachten was van de afgelopen tijd: GASSAN voor de naam van het bedrijf en 121 als zijnde het aantal facetten. WAT IS Er ZO BIJZONDEr AAN DE GASSAN 121?De extra facetten ten opzichte van de briljant. Deze zorgen voor extra schittering en dat is nu juist waar het bij diamanten om gaat. Bovendien wordt de Gassan 121 door onze eigen slijpers geslepen.WAArOM IS Er vOOr EEN rONDE STEEN GEKOZEN AlS GEPATENTEErDE STEEN I.P.v. EEN ANDErE vOrM?Amsterdam als diamantstad staat bekend om de briljant cut oftewel de ronde vorm. Daarom vonden wij het als historische diamantslijperij uit Amsterdam zeer toepasselijk om juist met een ronde vorm te gaan werken. De ronde vorm spreekt bovendien de consument het meeste aan.WAAr WOrDT DE GASSAN 121 GESlEPEN?De Gassan 121 wordt alleen door slijpers van Gassan geslepen die hier speciaal voor zijn opgeleid.HOE BElANGrIJK IS DE GASSAN 121 vOOr GASSAN?Heel belangrijk. Gassan Diamonds is een Amsterdams bedrijf met een lange historie in de diamantindustrie. Het geeft wereldwijd een extra dimensie om een eigen gepatenteerde steen te hebben en is een bewijs van onze pure vakmanschap.HOE STAAT HET PATENT AANGEGEvEN IN DE STEEN?In de rondist (“Girdle” op tekening) staat Gassan 121®gelaserd. Indien gewenst, kan de klant door ons ook een eigen tekst in de rondist laten graveren, bijvoorbeeld een naam of een trouwdatum.KUN JE HIEr EEN vOOrBEElD vAN NOEMEN?Wij hebben onlangs tijdens de lancering van het magazine ‘Helden’ aan de gouden medaillewinnaars van de laatste Olympische spelen, Marianne vos, ranomi Kromowidjojo en Maartje Paumen, een Gassan 121 diamant overhandigd. Hierin was de betreffende datum en de door hen behaalde eindtijd/eindstand gegraveerd.

WHErE DOES THE lOvE fOr DIAMONDS COME frOM?My grandfather, Mr. van Moppes, was a diamond merchant.. In the holidays I started to work with him and that sparked my interest in the diamond trade. I worked at various companies in the diamond industry for 18 months where I learned about drawing, cutting and grinding.HOW lONG DOES THE GASSAN 121 EXIST?It was launched at the Millionaire fair in December 2005 on the beautiful Gassan Stand.HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA?I had already been working at Gassan for a long time and considered it important in this day and age that branding should play an important role in putting the famous Dutch diamond cutter on the map with its own patented stone. After three years of research i came up with the Gassan 121. After several drawings and models, i checked in cooperation with the WTOCD = research center Diamond High Council if optimum light output and brilliance was generated. This proved to be the case so we opted for this design. We then went straight to an advertising agency with the request to come up with an appropriate name for this stone. The advertising agency found this one of the easiest tasks that they’d had in a long time, namely Gassan as being the name of the company and 121, which is the number of facets.WHAT IS SO SPECIAl ABOUT THE GASSAN 121?The additional facets with respect to a brilliant. These provide extra sparkle and that is exactly what a diamond is all about. Moreover, the Gassan 121 is also cut by our own craftsmen.WHY WAS A rOUND STONE CHOSEN AS PATENTED STONE INSTEAD Of A DIffErENT SHAPE?Amsterdam is known for the brilliant cut otherwise known as the round shape. Therefore, as an historical diamond company from Amsterdam we found it very appropriate to work with a round shape. The round shape is also the most attractive to the consumer.WHErE IS THE GASSAN 121 CUT?The Gassan 121 is only cut within Gassan, by our specially trained staff.HOW IMPOrTANT IS THE GASSAN 121 fOr GASSAN?very important. An Amsterdam based company with a long history in the industry. The fact that we have our own patented stone gives extra worldwide dimension. It is a proof of our pure craftsmanship.HOW IS THE PATENT SPECIfIED IN THE STONE?Our name is lasered into the girdle (see drawing). When people come to us for special occasions we can also engrave the girdle.CAN YOU CITE AN EXAMPlE?During the launch of the magazine “’Helden”, we gave the Dutch golden medal winners of the Olympics in london, Marianne vos, ranomi Kromowidjojo and Maartje Paumen, a Gassan 121, engraved with the date and achieved time/score.

WAT BETEKENEN JUWElEN vOOr JOU?

Heel veel! Juwelen zijn zeer persoonlijke bezittingen en hebben

voor mij veel emotionele betekenis. Ik draag ze elke dag.

WElKE JUWElEN DrAAG JE ElKE DAG?

Ik draag sowieso elke dag een horloge gecombineerd met diverse

bandjes. Daarnaast draag ik ook altijd mijn ‘love’ bracelet van

Cartier of de ‘Spijker’.

WElK HOrlOGE DrAAG JE?

Meestal mijn roségouden Daytona horloge van rolex. Ik ben een

enorme fan van rolex horloges en koop eigenlijk nooit een ander

merk.

AAN WElKE JUWElEN BEN JE EMOTIONEEl vErBONDEN?

Een paar ringen die ik vaak draag en waarvan ik het erg zou

vinden om deze kwijt te raken. Dit is o.a. de ‘Hyena’ ring van

Cartier, welke ik altijd als pinkring droeg. Een paar maanden

geleden ben ik beroofd en is deze van mij afgenomen. Ik ben niet

snel emotioneel, maar ik was daar heel verdrietig over.

WAArOM WAS JUIST DIE rING ZO DIErBAAr vOOr JE?

Omdat ik deze had gekregen van iemand die mij heel dierbaar is.

HOE COMBINEEr JIJ JUWElEN?

Zelf ben ik niet iemand die, als er in een kledingstuk gouden ritsen

zitten, daar dan ook altijd per se gouden juwelen bij combineer.

Ik vind het juist leuk om de verschillende metaalkleuren te mixen.

Dat geeft mij een meer ‘edgy’ gevoel.

WHICH WATCH DO YOU WEAr?Usually my rose gold Daytona rolex. I’m a huge rolex fan and actually don’t buy other brands.

WHICH JEWEllErY HAS EMOTIONAl vAlUE fOr YOU?A few rings that I often wear and which I couldn’t be without . I wore one of those on my little finger. That was the Cartier “Hyena”. A few months ago I was robbed and that ring was stolen. I’m usually not over emotional but this really did upset me.

WHY WAS THE rING SO PrECIOUS TO YOU?Somebody very dear to me gave me that ring.

HOW DO YOU COMBINE YOUr JEWElS?I’m not the type of person who always has to wear gold jewellery if I have a gold zipper in my clothing. I like mixing the different metallic colours that gives me a more edgy feeling

Ecomagination – a trend oscillating between ecology and play, encouraging a balanced, ‘green’,

optimistic consumption. In its stylistics, the jewellery draws on organic forms. The inspiration

comes from, on the one hand, a futuristic biomimicry, and on the other – the mystical art of

Arcimboldo. The protagonist of this trend is to be a butterfly, which will markedly appear in

jewellery for a good few seasons. Asymmetrical pendants, exotic patterns and surfaces as well

WAT BETEKENEN JUWElEN vOOr JOU?Accessoires zijn er om een outfit aan te kleden oftewel af te stylen. Dit geeft extra uitstraling, stijl en vertrouwen.

HEBBEN BEPAAlDE JUWElEN vOOr JOU OOK EMOTIONElE WAArDE?Ja, om te beginnen uiteraard mijn trouwring. En een aantal ringen van vroeger die ik van mijn ouders kreeg. Ook voor het huwelijk kreeg ik van hen een prachtige ring. Deze heeft voor mij veel emotionele waarde. verder vind ik het rolex vintage horloge van mijn vader bijzonder om te dragen.

WAT IS JE fAvOrIETE HOrlOGEMErK?Dit zijn vooral de horloges van Cartier en rolex. De Santos 100 die ik vandaag om heb vind ik erg fijn om te dragen en te combineren met diverse bandjes. Ik houd ervan om te mixen en matchen met mijn horloges en juwelen.

DrAAG JE AlTIJD BEPAAlDE KlEUrEN GOUD BIJ ElKAAr?Ja, ik draag zowel wit-, geel- als roségoud door elkaar heen. Wel vind ik het erg mooi om, als ik bijvoorbeeld zwart draag, daar uitsluitend witgoud bij te dragen.

HEB JE EEN fAvOrIET SIErAAD?Ja, dat is het collier dat Johnny en ik speciaal voor de geboorte van Jezebel hebben laten maken. Er hangt een witgoud rondje aan en hierin is haar vingerafdruk gezet, met aan de achterkant haar geboortedatum en naam. Wij dragen dit colliertje allebei. Ik vond dit een leuk idee en zou hier wel een eigen juwelenlijn van willen maken.

JOHNNY HEITINGA:

WAT BETEKENEN HOrlOGES vOOr JOU?Een horloge is wat mij betreft hèt sieraad voor een man. Ik ben er zelf dol op, mijn favoriete merk is rolex.

Mijn eerste rolex horloge kocht ik bij Gassan, toen ik mijn eerste vaste contract had binnengehaald. Ik zal het nooit vergeten, een Sub Mariner. Toen ze mij bij Gassan vroegen of ik met of zonder datumaanduiding wilde, dacht ik bij mezelf: “Ik neem maar zonder want dat zal wel weer een paar honderd euro schelen”. Dit horloge betekent nog steeds zeer veel voor mij.

Een andere favoriet van mij is de stalen rolex Daytona.

Ook is er door rolex voor het Nederlands elftal een speciaal witgouden Daytona horloge gemaakt. Dit is uiteraard een zeer bijzonder horloge voor mij. Deze limited edition is 2 jaar geleden uitgekomen, tijdens de halve finale van het WK waar wij tweede werden. Het was voor het eerst sinds 30 jaar dat rolex dit deed en ik ben dan ook heel blij met dit speciale exemplaar.

verder heb ik een emotionele band met de IWC Portugieser die ik tijdens ons trouwen droeg. Dit is een gelimiteerd horloge dat IWC in samenwerking met Gassan heeft gemaakt. Ik wilde een keer wat anders en ik ben er nog steeds heel blij mee, maar ik draag het vooral tijdens bijzondere gelegenheden.

verder ben ik ook heel blij met mijn groene Milgauss en op mijn verlanglijstje staat nog de Sky Dweller van rolex.

Een mooi verhaal vind ik nog altijd dat toen ik enige tijd geleden met mijn schoonouders bij Gassan was, er een horlogemaker tegen mijn schoonvader zei: “Weet u dat u een heel bijzonder horloge draagt, dit is een vintage rolex Daytona, uit de jaren’ 60.”. Mijn schoonvader was zich daar helemaal niet bewust van. Het bleek een heel zeldzaam vintage model te zijn. Dit blijft het bijzondere aan horloges.

ZIJN Er vErDEr NOG JUWElEN DIE JE DrAAGT?Ik draag bijna elke dag het zwarte koordje met daaraan de vingerafdruk van mijn dochter Jezebel, net als Charlotte. Echt een uniek en speciaal juweel dat ook voor een man makkelijk te dragen is.

DO SOME JEWElS HAvE SENTIMENTAl vAlUE fOr YOU?Yes, of course, my wedding ring. And some rings I got from my parents. for the wedding I received a beautiful ring from them. This ring has great sentimental value for me. Also my father’s vintage rolex watch is very special to wear.

WHAT IS YOUr fAvOUrITE WATCH BrAND?These are mainly Cartier and rolex watches. The Santos 100 that I’m wearing today is a very nice watch to wear and to combine with various bracelets. I like to mix and match with my watches and je-welry.

YOU AlWAYS WEAr DIffErENT GOlD COlOUrS TOGE-THEr?Yes, I wear either white, yellow and rose gold often in combination or separate. What really beautiful is for example is just white gold when wearing black. DO YOU HAvE A fAvOUrITE PIECE Of JEWElrY? Yes, that’s the necklace that Johnny and I had made when Jezebel was born. There is a round gold hanger on it with her fingerprint and on the back her birth date and name. We both have this nec-klace. This a really nice idea and I would like to make a jewellery line with this theme.

JOHNNY HEITINGA: WHAT DO WATCHES MEAN TO YOU? Watches are for me the only piece of jewellery for a man. I love wat-ches, my favourite brand is rolex.I bought my first rolex watch at Gassan, when I got my first perma-nent contract. This was a Sub Mariner without the date. When they asked me at Gassan if I preferred the watch with or without date indication, I thought to myself:“I will take it without a date. That will probably be a few hundred euro’s less expensive.” This watch still means a lot to me. Another favorite of mine is my steel rolex Daytona.

Also rolex made a special white gold Daytona watch for the Dutch team. This is obviously a very special watch for me. This limited edi-tion was released two years ago, during the semifinals of the World Cup where we finished second. It was the first time in 30 years that rolex did this and I am very happy with it. I also have a special feeling for the IWC Portugieser I wore at our wedding. This is a limited watch IWC made in cooperation with Gassan. I wanted something different and still am very pleased with this watch. I usually wear it on special occasions. I am also very happy with my green Milgauss and on my list is the new rolex Sky Dweller. It’s a nice story that a couple of years ago, at Gassan, one of the watchmakers walked over to my father in law, and said, “Do you know that you have a very special watch, this is a vintage rolex Daytona, from the 60s. “. My father was not aware of it himself . It was a very rare vintage model. This is the special thing about cer-tain watches. IS THErE ANY OTHEr JEWEllErY YOU WEAr?Just like Charlotte, almost every day I wear the black cord necklace with my daughter Jezebel’s fingerprint hanger. Truly a special jewel which can easily be worn by a man.

Agassi Prep Graduates. Allowing gifted and motivated youngsters to

learn a trade with a future, at the N.G. Hayek Watchmaking School.

tHe bOUtiqUeIn 2005 opende Gassan Diamonds Diamondland op de begane grond van het fabrieksgebouw. Deze grote cadeauwinkel biedt een uitgebreide collectie diamanten juwelen, horloges, op maat gemaakte juwelen en cadeauartikelen. In 2012 werd Diamondland volledig gerenoveerd en de look heeft een make-over gekregen op basis van de duidelijke branding strategie die een jaar eerder is ontwikkeld. Hierna werd Gassan Diamondland omgedoopt tot: Gassan The Boutique.

In 2005, Gassan Diamonds opened Diamondland on the ground floor of the factory building. This large gift shop offers an extensive collection of diamond jewelry, watches, custom-made jewelry and gift items. In 2012, Diamondland was completely renovated and the look was updated according to the clear branding strategy that was developed a year earlier. Hereafter, Gassan Diamondland has been renamed: Gassan The Boutique.
