Hiëronymus Bosch (1450-1516) leefde en werkte in 's Hertogenbosch waar hij raadselachtige schilderijen en tekeningen vol bizarre wezens, fantastische monsters en angstaanjagende nachtmerries schiep. Hij schilderde ook gedetailleerde landschappen. Zijn inspiratie vond hij in fundamentele morele begrippen: bekoring, zonde en oordeel. Dit prachtige boek verschijnt naar aanleiding van de grootste tentoonstelling die ooit aan zijn werk werd gewijd. Hiervoor werd belangrijk nieuw onderzoek verricht over de 25 schilderijen en 20 tekeningen die van hem bekend zijn. In de zes secties van het boek komt de hele carrière van de kunstenaar aan bod. In het verleden hebben de kunsthistorici zich vooral toegespitst op de onderwerpen en betekenissen van Bosch' werken, terwijl aan aspecten als schildertechniek, de medewerking van een atelier en de bewaringstoestand van de nog bestaande schilderijen aanzienlijk minder aandacht werd besteed. Sinds 2010 bestudeert het Bosch Research and Conservation Project de werken aan de hand van moderne onderzoeksmethoden. Het team heeft Bosch' bewaard gebleven schilderijen zo grondig mogelijk gedocumenteerd met infraroodreflectografie en digitale macrofotografie in ultrahoge resolutie, zowel bij infrarood als bij zichtbaar licht. Röntgenfoto's werden gedigitaliseerd en de volledige fotografische documentatie werd in een coregistratieproces verwerkt. Dat alles, samen met de microscopische studie van de schilderijen, verschafte het team de mogelijkheid om uitvoerige en kritische onderzoeksrapporten te schrijven over de techniek en de conditie van de werken. Hun bevindingen, die in dit buitengewone boek voor het eerst worden gepubliceerd, zullen bijdragen tot een beter inzicht in het oeuvre van Bosch.

The revolutionary aesthetic of Japanese woodcuts also inspired Vincent van Gogh to depict the natural environment to the smallest detail. Claude Monet travelled from France to Oslo to paint winter mountain landscape, in a true Japanese spirit. Ateneum’s exhibition, opulent decorativeness of international art and design meets the delicate Nordic naturalness.This research and exhibition project, which Ateneum Art Museum has engaged in since 2011, will go on tour from Ateneum to the national galleries of Norway and Denmark. The chief curator of the exhibition is the internationally renowned art expert Professor Gabriel P. Weisberg.

Japanomania in the Nordic Countries 1875-1918

Munch - Van Gogh

The Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) and artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) were contemporaries. Only six years apart in age, they belonged to the same circles and the same artistic movements of their time. For a period they lived in adjoining rooms in Berlin.This richly illustrated book is the first extensive joint presentation of the two giants of Norwegian art history. The relationship between Vigeland and Munch is surrounded by myths, and many believe they were rivals. This book clarifies the connections between them by examining their artistic careers side by side. Their work, artistic development and ambitions have interesting features in common, and many previously undiscovered links are uncovered here. These include reciprocal influences and shared sources of inspiration, as well as thematic and formal similarities. For example, both artists followed contemporary trends and depicted angstridden figures, ambiguous love motifs and gloomy doomsday themes. Na het prille begin van de popart in Engeland in 1956, ontwikkelde zich amper enkele jaren later een soortgelijke stroming in de New Yorkse kunstscene: de Amerikaanse popart. Als reactie tegen het abstracte, cerebrale en ernstige expressionisme stelde deze kunststroming zich volledig open voor het optimisme dat de ontluikende consumptiemaatschappij alom opwekte. Alles waarvoor de kunstenaars uit de tweede helft van de jaren 1940 en de jaren 1950 onder de vleugels van de illustere Clement Greenberg hadden gestreden - de kunst omde kunst, de pure schilderkunst, kunst zonder inhoud en, belangrijker nog, puur abstracte kunst - werd zomaar overboord gegooid door meesters als Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist en Tom Wesselmann. What would it mean for choreography to perform as an exhibition? That is the question at the origin of Work/Travail/Arbeid, a newly commissioned project by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Inresponse, the legendary Belgian dancer-choreographer takes her stage piece Vortex Temporum, choreographed to the eponymous music of composer Gérard Grisey, and reimagines it for the radically different temporal, spatial, and perceptual conditions of an art space. Rather than simply bringing a dance performance into a different space, De Keersmaeker reimagines and recasts the choreography as a nine-week-long exhibition. The result is a project that transforms the very material and conditions that have long been essential to dance, in particular the rigorous structure and choreographic language for which De Keersmaeker is known, into an entirely new exhibition form. It also reveals, in a way that perhaps no other dance piece by the choreographer could, the complex conceptual, technical, and physical labor-in sum, the work-that is the backbone of her entire oeuvre.

The exhibition Port City Talks / Istanbul-Antwerp will motivate the audience to walk through the traces of Istanbul, discovering art works and artefacts from different centuries and using multimedia installations, and to discover the Bosporus, its inlet Golden Horn and their hinterland. The first part of the exhibition will show for the very first time in Belgium a selection of archeological objects from Yenikapi, the oldest harbor of Istanbul, in use between the 4th and 11th Century. Het Gentse Museum voor Schone Kunsten bezit ruim zestig Hollandse schilderijen uit de 17de eeuw, de zogenaamde 'Gouden Eeuw' van het Noorden. Niet alleen een indrukwekkend geheel, maar ook een van de meest opmerkelijke collecties Hollandse schilderkunst buiten Nederland. Ze omvat werk van meesters als Frans Hals, Jan van Goyen, Willem Claes. Heda, Albert Cuyp enRoelant Savery. Bovendien heeft het museum enkele uiterst zeldzame stukken in huis, zo onder meer het enige bekende werk van A.E. van Rabel, terwijl 'Het armenhuis te Utrecht' van Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot de enige bekende afbeelding is van die instelling. Een aantal werken kunnen we met reden 'curieus' noemen. Sommige werden in de loop van de tijd overschilderd of aangevuld, andere werken blijken te zijn uitgesneden uit grotere doeken en afzonderlijk verkocht - een typische praktijk in kunsthandel van de 19de eeuw. En dan zijn er nog de eigenaardige interpretaties van bepaalde stukken, de één al geloofwaardiger dan de ander...

CERAMIX vertelt aan de hand van meer dan 200 kunstwerken het verhaal van de keramische kunst vanaf het begin van de vorige eeuw tot heden, met ruime aandacht voor de naoorlogse artistieke keramiek productie en hedendaagse kunst in Europa, Noord-Amerika en Azië. Er zijn kunstenaars geselecteerd die in uiteenlopende vormen het materiaal hebben gebruikt, van schilderijen en sculpturen tot installaties in gemengde techniek. De opstelling van de tentoonstelling is zowel chronologisch als thematisch en omvat ook een aantal monografische zalen die zijn ingericht in nauwe samenwerking met de kunstenaars in kwestie, onder wie Johan Creten en Klara Kristalova.

Het gaat om een eigenzinnige selectie, samengesteld door de gastconservatoren Camille Morineau en Lucia Pesapane, met werken van meer dan 100 kunstenaars waaronder Matisse, Rodin, Picasso, Thomas Schütte en Ai Weiwei. In het voorjaar 2016 reist de tentoonstelling naar Parijs en Sèvres.

In de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw kreeg de relatie tussen fotografie en psychiatrie een heel ander karakter. Fotografen documenteerden het leven in de psychiatrische instellingen en klaagden het falen van de psychiatrie aan. Ze leverden het propagandamateriaal bij de radicale omwentelingen in de psychiatrie. Ondertussen was fotografie uitgegroeid tot een kunstvorm.Psychiatrie blijft tot de verbeelding spreken en patiënten zijn gewilde modellen. In het tijdperk van de selfie drukken mensen met een psychiatrische problematiek een eigen stempel op de beeldvorming van psychiatrie. Fotografen blijven worstelen met de vraag hoe om te gaan met de stigmata van een psychiatrische aandoening. Alleen een waarachtige ontmoeting met de ander kan stigma reduceren. Lichtgevoelig. Psychiaters Patiënten Portretten toont een lange en intense geschiedenis van het fotograferen van mensen die psychisch lijden, en is een poging om hen te ontmoeten.

In 1565 bracht de Antwerpse uitgever Hieronymus Cock twee gravures uit die het beeld dat wij ons van heksen hebben gevormd voor altijd heeft bepaald. De prenten waren ontworpen door Pieter Bruegel de Oude en kenden een ruime verspreiding binnen en buiten de Lage Landen. Tot vele generaties na Bruegel putten kunstenaars inspiratie uit zijn voorbeeld door het te herhalen en aan te vullen. De heks zoals wij ze kennen, die op een bezem door de schoorsteen naar buiten vliegt terwijl de heksenketel in de haard staat te pruttelen en haar kat zich bij het vuur warmt, is ondenkbaar zonder Bruegels prototypes. Aan de hand van schilderijen, prenten en tekeningen, eigentijdse nieuwsbrieven en literaire bronnen maar ook processtukken en handboeken van heksenvervolgers schetst Renilde Vervoort, die in 2011 promoveerde op dit onderwerp, een spannend beeld van de heks in de kunst.

Het dagelijks leven uit de 16de eeuw staat dit najaar centraal in Rotterdam met bordelen, feestvierende boeren, kwakzalvers en ongelijke liefde. Niets ontsnapte aan de aandacht van deze generatie kunstenaars. Nooit eerder is een tentoonstelling met topwerken uit de periode vanaf de late Middeleeuwen tot circa 1570 rondom dit thema gemaakt. De tentoonstelling 'Van Bosch tot Bruegel' bevat een selectie van politiek incorrecte schilder- en prentkunst van het hoogste niveau.
