    Background

A strong controller is one that can respond quickly to adisturbance while limiting the oscillation and overshoot. Onesuch controller is the PID controller, which takes intoaccount current error (P), past error (I), and predicted error(D).

Optimal tuning parameters can be determined throughmethods such as Ziegler-Nichols, Cohen-Coon, and ITAE.

A reaction curve can be used to find the gain (K), time delay(), and time constant ()

    Key Teaching Points

A properly tuned PID controller can eliminate offset andminimize oscillation.

Different tuning methods yield different parameters. The

optimal solution can be inferred by running the dynamicsimulation and observing how the process behaves.

    Problem Statement

The system consists of two tanks, with the liquid outlet fromthe first flowing into the second. The first tank has hot andcold water streams flowing in

Inspection of a reaction curve yields the following parameters =

    %= 0.9333

    =20 seconds = 0.33 minutes

    = 200 seconds = 3.33 minutes
