STYRENE : CONCLUSIONS ON MONITORING OF EFFECTS Conclusions: Early effects: adducts: DNA- and Hb-adducts possibly can make differentiation between low- and high-exposed workers single strand breaks (SSB): positive in studies having examined workers exposed to airborne concentrations below 70 ppm sister chromatid exchanges (SCE): negative in studies having examined workers exposed to airborne concentrations below 100 ppm. Genetic changes: gene mutations (GM): potentially useful but time consuming; micronuclei (MN): inconclusive; chromosome aberrations (CA): studies having examined workers exposed to airborne concentration higher than 60 ppm have yielded positive associations. For a critical appraisal the reader is referred to the in depth discussion of each study On the basis of these data, chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes seem to be the most sensitive for the follow- up of workers exposed to styrene
