Hi ASHRAE Family! Hello All and Happy Holidays! It’s hard to believe that the Holiday Season is upon us already. Hopefully we’ll get some snow and colder weather before Christmas so that we can all enjoy some winter activities. We have a great program coming up this month. Chris Burt with BELL will be sharing a 3D laser scanning technology available to the HVAC market. I have used similar technology both on Cook Inlet platforms and on remote North Slope Drill Sites and it can prove to be a powerful engineering tool when your brownfield jobsite isn’t somewhere easily accessible for walk downs. I look forward to seeing what Chris has in store for us. A big thanks to Craig Rohwer for pulling this together. I hope to see you all there! I am excited to announce a new scholarship fund that the ASHRAE Alaska Chapter is beginning to implement. Tracy McKeon has provided a detailed outline of what this entails further on in this newsletter. Please take a minute to consider having your company donate to this. Every day we are diligent about keeping Safety in Design at the forefront of our minds while we provide design and construction services to our clients. During this Holiday Season please also make an effort to keep personal safety in mind throughout all of the activities, parties, freezing rain, snow, etc… Wishing you and your families a wonderful Holiday Season! Mak Kampen, P.E. President, Alaska Chapter ASHRAE

Chris Burt has been with BELL for over 15 years. As a 3D-laser scanning guru, he developed BELL’s scanning department into what it is today. Chris serves as their senior civil engineer and 3D scanning manager, providing quality assurance and quality control on all surveying projects requiring 3D scanning. He is proficient with the use of multiple types of terrestrial laser-scanning equipment and their associated processing software. He has performed surveys in Alaska and overseen using this cutting-edge technology for over 10 years, the majority of which has come in the oil and gas industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage. In Chris’s leisure time you can catch him remodeling houses around the Anchorage Bowl, golfing and spending time with his wife and two daughters. Chris will be discussing the following topic: 3D laser scanning and the applications in the HVAC industry. The scanning technology has been used to provide detailed 3D models of facilities; architectural, pre– and post construction as-builts.
We hope to see you there!

Let’s Keep Future Engineers in Alaska!
The Alaska Chapter of ASHRAE is seeking donations from our members and community in setting
up a UAA scholarship and student activities fund to help support young engineers in Alaska.
Through scholarship and student activity support, Alaska Chapter of ASHRAE seeks to motivate
students and prospective students to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R
field at home in Alaska. Funds will be set aside to provide a scholarship at UAA to a local high
school senior entering the field of engineering and to sponsor student memberships for our local
UAA student ASHRAE chapter. It is the intent that this minimum $500 scholarship will be
awarded annually and 10 student ASHRAE memberships at UAA will be supported by the fund.
Currently ASHRAE does not have an active UAF chapter; however based on available funds in
the future we would like to potentially award multiple student scholarships at UAA and UAF.
Please consider donating now and in the future to help get this scholarship off the ground. All
funds designated for the scholarship/student account will be tracked separately of Chapter
dues and RP donations. If you or your company is interested in donating please contact Tracy
McKeon at [email protected].

be well attended. Please email me if you have any suggestions on course topics.
Here are some suggestions: Healthcare Facilities: Best Practices for Design & Application Integrated Building Design Energy Modeling Best Practices & Application Air to Air Energy Recovery Fundamentals or Applications
Technology Award:
The chapter is trying to get individuals or companies to submit for the 2016-2017 ASHRAE Technology Awards for next years (CRC) Chapters Regional Conferences. Please let me know if you have any questions. Just email me and I’ll send you the Technology Award Short Form. This is a great way to get recognition for the projects that you and your
colleague's have been working on. Technology awards include the following:
Milton W. Garland Commemorative Refrigeration Award for Project Excellence - Recognizes a non-comfort cooling refrigeration app which highlights innovative and/or new technologies. Refrigeration Comfort Cooling Award or Project Excellence - Recognizes designer and owner of a comfort cooling refrigeration app which highlights innovation and/or new technologies. Technology Award of Engineering Excellence - Recognizes on an international scale, successful apps of innovative design which incorporates ASHRAE standards for effective energy management, indoor air quality and mechanical de-sign management technology. L.O. Crooks Refrigeration Award – to encourage excellence in Refrigeration activities and to promote interest in Re-frigeration at the Chapter level. Ralph Robson Technology Award – to recognize the best overall winning entry amongst all the categories in the Re-gional Technology Award Competition In addition there are a number of Technology Awards on a Regional level for outstanding engineering in effective ener-gy management, indoor air quality, mechanical design management and innovative and/or new technology for: New Commercial Facilities New Educational Facilities Existing Other Institutional New Residential New Public Assembly New Other Institutional New Health Care Facilities New Commercial Facilities If you have any questions or need additional information about submitting your project for an award please email me. Fellow ASHRAE Members, Thank you to all the individual and company contributions we have received thus far!! The Alaska Chapter has raised $5,616.10 for Research this year, putting us at 43% of our annual goal!! Way to go everyone! ASHRAE Research is essential to updates that are made to the Society’s standards and guidelines, which provide uniform meth-ods of testing for rating purposes. The standards and guidelines suggest safe practices for design and installation and provide other information which guides the industry. Every dollar that is donated goes to ASHRAE Research! 100%! If you are interested in donating towards the future of HVAC&R industry standards and practices please follow one of these three donation options:
