HIKING Santa Rosa Mountains - Wildflowers abound here in sea-

son, and mule deer, bighorn sheep and mountain lions canoccasionally be seen. Located 35 miles north ofWinnemucca on Highway 95.

Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail (South Trailhead) -Situated along the spine of the Ruby Mountains, 42 milesfrom Elko, this well-maintained trail has many hikes tochoose from ranging from 2 - 37 miles in length.

Upper Lamoille Canyon (North Trailhead) - Located at theend of the paved highway through Lamoille Canyon, 25 milesfrom Elko, this unique canyon offers a wide variety of trailhiking possibilities. Hike to several mountain lakes includingLamoille, Island, Dollar, Liberty, Favre and Castle.

Winchell Lake - Trail located on Angel Lake Road is 4miles long, contouring the East Humboldt Mountains. Earlyin the season the trail, about 10 miles from Wells, isenhanced by ample displays of wildflowers in bloom.

Jarbidge- Jarbidge Wilderness Area. Hike to Mary’s River,Jarbidge Lake, and Emerald Lake in the Jarbidge Mountains.

Soldier Basin - This trail accesses a beautiful high eleva-tion basin with several lakes and spectacular scenery.Located 36 miles from Elko, the trail can be reached fromtwo sides of the Ruby Mountains.

MOUNTAIN BIKINGBloody Shins - Biking area near Winnemucca offers

beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. Take HighlandDrive to Kluncy Canyon Road and the trailhead.

Jarbidge - Bike spectacular Jarbidge Wilderness Area andmiles of old mining and hunting roads through the moun-tains.

Tuscarora - Quaint town 54 miles from Elko, with deepmining industry roots and rich history. The area does notprovide established trails, but plenty of scenic riding is avail-able.

Harrison Pass - This portion of the Humboldt NationalForest, 42 miles from Elko, rises to over 7,000 feet in eleva-tion. See beautiful views of Huntington Valley from the topof the ridge.

Big Bend/Sunflower Flat - Variety of routes for beginnerto advanced bikers including Point of Rocks, TennesseeMountain and Martin Creek. Convenient to Mountain Cityand Wildhorse Resort.

Hamilton Stage Road Loop - Just outside Elko city limits,this historic trail follows the Hamilton Stage Road on which

Angel Lake - Site of the Annual Race tothe Angel, held in September.

ROCK CLIMBINGLamoille Canyon - Top roping and rap-

pelling here. All types of rocks and slopesleave the route selection to the individualclimber's skill level.

Adobe Range - Possibilities for both tra-ditional and sport routes exist throughoutthis rock face for experienced climbers toinvestigate. Just north of Elko.

HORSEBACK RIDINGRuby Crest National Recreation Trail -

This rugged 37-mile trail is dotted withalpine lakes and glaciated canyons. Packtrips can be planned to last a few hours orup to four days.

Jarbidge - Ride the Jarbidge WildernessArea and experience weeklong trail ridingtrips with Lowell Prunty.

Overland Lake - There's a gorgeousalpine lake at the end of this challengingtrail in the Ruby Mountains. Top elevationof over 10,000 feet requires at least a threehour ride each way (14 miles round trip).

Secret Pass/Starr Trail - Adventurousmountain riding through prime ranchingcountry, 40 miles from Elko. A rejuvenatingand scenic day trip for any rider.

South Fork State Recreation Area -Plenty of scenic rides along the water and inSouth Fork Canyon. Ideal for a beginningrider.

Soldier Basin - Ten miles out of Elko,this trail leads to several pristine alpinelakes -- Robinson, Hidden and Soldier.Elevation rises 2,000 feet over length oftrail with unspoiled views of the Rubies fromthe rim of Soldier Basin.

Mary's River Basin Trail - This challeng-ing trail, 100 miles from Elko, leads youthrough rambling high desert wilderness.

CAMPINGRye Patch State Recreation Area - Just a

mile west of I-80 at Exit 129 near Lovelock,Rye Patch provides a popular westernNevada camping site.

Jarbidge Recreation Area - Camp in oneof Nevada's most beautiful areas. Located100 miles northeast of Elko via State Route225 and unpaved road. Camp in isolatedsites along the breathtaking Jarbidge River.Spaces with full hook-ups can be found at

the Jarbidge RV Park. Lamoille Canyon - Thomas Canyon

Campground, 25 miles from Elko, has 42overnight sites, mainly for RVs and trucks.Lamoille Terraces, a little higher, has ninewalk-in tent sites.

South Fork State Recreation Area - 16miles from Elko, features a developedcampground offering 25 campsites.

Angel Lake - 13 miles from Wells, AngelLake is the only alpine lake accessible bypaved road in the area. Campground has26 overnight camping sites with 18 sites atAngel Creek.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - 70miles north of Elko, this area offers beauti-ful views of the Independence Range. Manycampground areas to choose from.

Wilson Reservoir Recreation Area - You'llfind good facilities at this popular site foroutdoor fun. Located 83 miles north-north-west of Elko, via State Route 225 and coun-ty roads.

South Ruby Lake Campground - 37,632-acre national refuge at Ruby Lake featuresa fresh water bulrush marsh, open pondsand grassy uplands. Overnight camping isavailable close to the refuge.

WILDLIFE VIEWINGSilver Island Mountain Byway - You'll find

some great photo opportunities off thebeaten path here. The drive partially followsthe Donner Party Trail. Take Exit 4 offInterstate 80.

Goshute Mountain Watchable WildlifeArea - Wildlife abound in this area, located20 minutes south of Wendover via alternateU.S. Highway 93.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge - 65miles from Elko, a fresh-water bulrushmarsh, open ponds and grassy uplands arehome to an amazing variety of birds, fishand animals.

Chinese Garden - Located in Carlin CityLimits this unique nature study area offersa nice diversion from the high desert land-scape. Wildlife abounds and fishing isallowed.

Lamoille Canyon - Lamoille Canyon Roadruns 12 miles through this canyon that ishome to Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep,mountain goats, mule deer and birds.

Angel Lake - Depending upon the sea-son, a visitor can view bighorn sheep, deer,mountain goat and many types of alpinebirds from this scenic lake, tucked into theEast Humboldt Range.

BOATING & LAKE FISHINGRye Patch State Recreation Area - Full boat launch facili-

ties, fishing, camping and a picnic area make this a favoriteof Lovelock-area residents and visitors. Just a mile west of I-80 at Exit 129.

Blue Lake - Located 125 miles north of Winnemucca, thelake is accessed by taking Highway 95 to its junction withHighway 140; the intrepid angler must hike to the lake.Those a little less adventurous might try nearby OnionReservoir.

South Fork State Recreation Area - The park, 16 milesfrom Elko, is best known for trout and bass fishing - withsome catfish also caught. Facilities include a boat launch,campground and picnic area.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - This 120-acre statepark is centered on the northeast shore of WildhorseReservoir, 70 miles from Elko. Trout, bass, yellow perch andcatfish can all be caught from the shore or by boat.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge - Anglers will findprime large mouth bass fishing here. Fly or spin fishing isalso available, as well as the possibility of hooking a real tro-phy trout. Motorized boats are permitted seasonally with a10 hp limit.

Angel Lake - This beautiful alpine lake is accessible bypaved road from Wells and offers plenty of mountain troutand memorable fly fishing. Motorized boats are prohibited.

Wilson Reservoir - 90 miles from Elko, Wilson is remote,but offers great trout and large mouth bass fishing.Motorized boats are restricted to 10 hp.

STREAM FISHINGKnott Creek - 125 miles north of Winnemucca, Knott

Creek is accessed by taking Highway 95 to Highway 140,and turning on the Knott Creek Road.

Lye Creek - 55 miles north of Winnemucca, offers thefisherman 13 developed camping units. Travel north onHighway 95, and east on State Route 290, to the HinkeySummit Road.

Jarbidge River – Located 103 miles north of Elko off Hwy.225 on the Charleston/Jarbidge Road. Pan-sized trout canbe caught in abundance.

Salmon Falls Creek - Located just two miles southwest ofJackpot, Salmon Falls offers kayaking and canoeing in addi-tion to fishing. There is a boat launch on-site.

South Fork of the Humboldt River - Habitat for plenty oftrophy trout. The limit is one, and only artificial lures with asingle barbless hook may be used. Below South ForkReservoir, both trout and bass may be caught.

Lamoille Canyon - Lamoille Creek winds throughout thisscenic glaciated canyon and includes several beaver pondsand open, winding stretches of water. Fly fishing for trout isavailable.

Owyhee River - Just below Wild Horse Reservoir, it is pos-

sible to catch large trout in the Owyhee. Bruneau River - This remote area, 75

miles from Elko, boasts of plenty of fastfishing for rainbow trout.

Tabor Creek - This small stream, 30miles north of Wells, offers both rainbowand brook trout in abundance.

ICE FISHING Wilson Reservoir - Great trout fishing, 90

miles from Elko. The improved gravel roadmay be closed by weather, so call ahead.

South Fork State Recreation Area - This1,650 acre reservoir is accessible by pavedroad and freezes late in the season. Largetrout provide fast action.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - Verypopular ice fishing spot featuring trout andyellow perch in abundance.
