    A TREE FULLOF SECRETS

the definitive Pink Floyd rarities compilation

    Introduction

On 18 CDs (yes, eighteen!) you'll find all the A and B sides of all the Pink Floyd singles, all thepromo, edited, obscured, or remixed versions, and all the soundtracks bits of your favorite PinkFloyd and solo tracks.

Basically, this collection includes (nearly) all songs officially released, but not on regular album(compilations, singles, promos, soundtracks...), as well as rare versions from acetates andstudio outtakes. We didn't consider live tracks (concerts, radio or TV appearances), unlessthey're part of a single or a promo single. We also left out of this scope the Syd Barrett solorarities, because it mainly consists in slightly different mixes of regular versions (we'd like to leta more hardcore fan than we are, doing the job). Some other things are not included, mainlybecause they could be treed separately, as a whole entity: "Live At Pompeii" and "The Wall"soundtracks, mono editions of albums ("The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", "A Saucerful OfSecrets"), quadraphonic editions of albums ("Atom Heart Mother", "The Dark Side Of TheMoon", "Wish You Were Here")...

We tried to make the most definitive Pink Floyd rarities compilation, in both completeness andsound quality. For each track, we tried to find the best sounding version available. As a result,we're proud to say that a lot of tracks sound better than any other version available elsewhere.

    Rules

What we mean with the word "rarity":

    1) Song officially released, but not on regular albums (compilations, singles, soundtracks...) [1]

    2) Alternate mix (acetate...)3) Outtake from unreleased studio session4) Demo

[1] with an exception for the stuff being a part of a whole "entity"(most of them are available separately, as other projects). For instance, the following stuff is not included:- "Live At Pompeii" soundtrack- "The Wall" soundtrack- mono "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", "A Saucerful Of Secrets"- quadraphonic "Atom Heart Mother", "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here"- "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" video- "P*U*L*S*E" video

    "Chronological" rules for tracklist:

    1) tracks are sorted by recording date, not release date [2]2) different versions of the same track with same recording date are sorted by release date [3]3) singles from the same album are listed in the same order than on the album [4]

[2] with an exception for the demos, placed before the actual release, to save"continuity" and to hear how the song evolved from the demo to the released version.

[3] if the release date is the same or unknown, the versions are sorted from the most"usual" to the most "unusual": single version -> extended version -> promo version

[4] unless the recording dates are known with precision for each track (in this case, seerule nr.1)

1 - Lucy Leave (uncredited) 02:512 - I'm aKing Bee (written by Moore recorded by Slim Harpo) 03:03

Recorded : London, late 1965Primary source : EMIdisc acetateSource for the tree : "A Fish out of Water" RoIO CD & "Outtakes from Outer Space" RoIO CD

These two (unreleased) songs appear on a two-sided 7" acetate discovered

early 1988. Whilst some experts consider this as a fake, Miles reproduces inhis book a setlist including "Lucy Leave" for the gig the band played onOctober 14, 1966.

3 - Let's Roll Another One (Barrett) 03:09Recorded : London, Mike Leonard's house, January 1967Primary source : cassette recordingSource for the tree : unkown gen copy

Instrumental rehearsal for the song that later became "Candy and a CurrantBun". This rehearsal took place at Mike Leonard's house and was recorded byIrene Winsby.

    4 - Arnold Layne (Barrett) - acetate 02:34

Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, January 23-25, 1967Primary source : EMIdisc acetateSource for the tree : "Anthology II" RoIO CD

Fades in 2 seconds after the actual start, strange edit skipping organ solo.

5 - Arnold Layne (Barrett) - mono 02:53Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, January 23-25, 1967Primary source : "Arnold Layne" single (1st single), released March 11, 1967Source for the tree : "The Pink Floyd Early Singles" CD

6 - Arnold Layne (Barrett) - fake stereo 02:51Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, January 23-25, 1967Primary source : "The Best of the Pink Floyd" compilation, released 1970

& "Masters of Rock" compilation, released 1973Source for the tree : "Works" CD

7 - Candy and a Currant Bun (Barrett) - acetate 01:59Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, January 23-25, 1967Primary source : EMIdisc acetateSource for the tree : "Anthology II" RoIO CD

Alternate lyrics ("please just walk with me" while on the regular single versionit's "please just f*** with me"), different verse structure, no organ and guitarsolos. Some people refer to this version as being "Let's Roll Another One" from October 1966sessions at Thompson Recording Studios, but since the instrumental tracks are thesame as the regular single version, this probably comes from the same January 1967

    sessions at Sound Techniques Studios.

8 - Candy and a Currant Bun (Barrett) - mono 02:43Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, January 23-25, 1967Primary source : "Arnold Layne" single (1st single), released March 11, 1967Source for the tree : "The Pink Floyd Early Singles" CD

On the "Masters of Rock" compilation released 1973, there was a mistake in the title:"Candy and a Current Bun".

9 - Interstellar Overdrive (Barrett, Waters, Wright, Mason) - demo 06:57Recorded : ?Primary source : ?Source for the tree : unknown gen copy

This obscure demo is probably a fake. However, it has acquired a certain famein the trading circle of Pink Floyd fans. We included it here, in order to let youmake your own opinion. Some say it was recorded on a cheap cassetterecorder, by two guys playing guitar simultaneously, sometime during the 80s.Note that the first riff after the intro is identical to the bass riff that can beheard on the "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" version, and that earlier versions of

the song (on "San Francisco" soundtrack or "Tonite Let's All Make Love inLondon" soundtrack) don't contain this particular riff. This leads to theconclusion that this "demo" was probably recorded after the release of "ThePiper At The Gates Of Dawn" album.

10 - Interstellar Overdrive (Barrett, Waters, Wright, Mason) - CBC version 10:43Recorded : London, early January 1967Primary source : CBC Canadian Radio broadcast, early 1967Source for the tree : "Stone Rust" RoIO CD & "Dark Globe" RoIO CD

& "The Sights And Sounds Of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd" RoIO CDThis obscure studio version of "Interstellar Overdrive" was used during aninterview broadcast in early 1967 by CBC Canadian Radio.

11 - Interstellar Overdrive (Barrett, Waters, Wright, Mason) - Abbey Road outtake 00:40Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, March 14-15, 1967Primary source : Capital Radio broadcast ("Pink Floyd Story"), December 1976 - January

1977Source for the tree : unknown gen from Capital Radio broadcast

Outtake from "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" sessions.

12 - Interstellar Overdrive (Barrett, Waters, Wright, Mason) - mono single version 05:13Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, March 14-15, 1967Primary source : "Arnold Layne" French EP, released 1967Source for the tree : "Anthology II" RoIO CD

This version is unique, because it only contains the basic track, without

overdubs. It fades out before the actual end of the song.

13 - Scarecrow (Barrett) - Abbey Road outtake 01:05Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, March 19-20, 1967Primary source : Capital Radio broadcast ("Pink Floyd Story"), December 1976 - January

1977Source for the tree : unknown gen from Capital Radio broadcast

Outtake from "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" sessions. All the instrumentsare heavily undermixed. This is nearly an unplugged version .

    14 - Scarecrow (Barrett) - mono 02:07Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, March 19-20, 1967Primary source : "See Emily Play" single (2nd single), released June 16, 1967

Source for the tree : "The Pink Floyd Early Singles" CD

15 - Astronomy Domin (Barrett) - Abbey Road outtake 03:26Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, April 11-12, 1967Primary source : Capital Radio broadcast ("Pink Floyd Story"), December 1976 - January

1977Source for the tree : unknown gen from Capital Radio broadcast

17 - See Emily Play (Barrett) - mono 02:52Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, May 18 & 21, 1967Primary source : "See Emily Play" single (2nd single), released June 16, 1967Source for the tree : "The Pink Floyd Early Singles" CD

18 - See Emily Play (Barrett) - fake stereo 02:49Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, May 18 & 21, 1967Primary source : "The Best of the Pink Floyd" compilation, released 1970

& "Masters of Rock" compilation, released 1973Source for the tree : "A CD Full of Secrets" CD

19 - Flaming (Barrett) - mono 02:43Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, June 7 & 27, 1967Primary source : "Flaming" US single (3rd US single), released November 2, 1967.Source for the tree : "A CD Full of Secrets" CD

"Flaming" was not on the first US release of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn"album, and was then released as a single. This version is different from theregular (stereo) mix: background noises are mixed much louder. In fact, this version is identical to the version on the mono edition of "The Piper at theGates of Dawn" album. Curiously, on the 30 th Anniversary Mono Edition CD released in1997, one chord of the final chords sequence was edited out.

    20 - Untitled (uncredited) 01:31

Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, 1967Primary source : ?Source for the tree : "Dawn Of The Piper" RoIO CD

This untitled outtake was probably recorded around the same time "JugbandBlues" and "Vegetable Man" were recorded. On a lot of circulating copies, the title of this outtake is "Sunshine", but it's wrong("Sunshine" was a working title for something that was later included in "MatildaMother", and no outtake ever surfaced for this track). On some other copies, the title ofthis outtake is "Experiment".

    21 - Silas Lang (Barrett) 02:39Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, 1967 or 1968Primary source : ?

Source for the tree : "Vegetable Man, Where Are You" RoIO LPThere's a strong debate about the exact origin of this obscure outtake. Somethink it wasrecorded by the Floyd during the "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" sessions, inJune 1967. Other think it comes from a solo Barrett session in May 1968. Thisouttake contains the early chords of Syd Barrett's song "Swan Lee (SilasLang)". Note that the piano and jazz tunes may be due to a technical errorwhile dubbing the original multitrack master tape onto cassette.

22 - Scream Thy Last Scream (Barrett) - mono 04:27Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, August 7-8, 1967Primary source : EMIdisc acetateSource for the tree : unknown gen copy

This was intended to be the A-side of Pink Floyd's fourth single (after "Applesand Oranges" single). But due to Syd's departure from the band, it remainedunreleased.

On this version, the instruments and vocals are mainly mono. However, somestereo effects can be heard, especially on the background noises (high pitched

    voices).

2 - Vegetable Man (Barrett) - mono 02:23Recorded : London, Sound Techniques Studios, September 5-6, 1967Primary source : EMIdisc acetateSource for the tree : "Magnesium Proverbs" RoIO CD

    delay.

There's an edit during the intro, the 2nd verse ("Now is the time to beaware...") is missing, the beginning of the instrumental part after the lastverse was cut, and there's an early fade out.

    11 - Corporal Clegg (Waters) - video version 02:50Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, January 31, 1968

Primary source : Belgian promo videoSource for the tree : unknown gen copy from Belgian promo video

This mono version has an alternate ending: the last chorus (just after "Hisboots were very clean") and the following instrumental part are alternatetakes from the regular version.

12 - It Would Be So Nice (Wright) - mono 03:43Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, February 12-13 & March 5-12-21, 1968Primary source : "It Would Be So Nice" single (4th single), released April 12, 1968Source for the tree : "The Pink Floyd Early Singles" CD

Due to the "Evening Standard" mention in the original lyrics, the Floyd wasforced to return in the studio to change it into "Daily Standard". The original"Evening Standard" version doesn't seem to have surfaced.

13 - It Would Be So Nice (Wright) - promo edit 03:12Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, February 12-13 & March 5-12-21, 1968Primary source : "It Would Be So Nice" UK promo single, released April 12, 1968Source for the tree : ?

The central "It would be so nice" chorus is only sung once, and the first lines ofthe second verse ("Everybody cares about the weather ... what a waste oftime") are edited.

14 - It Would Be So Nice (Wright) - fake stereo 03:39Recorded : London, Abbey Road Studios, February 12-13 & March 5-12-21, 1968Primary source : "The Best of the Pink Floyd" compilation, released 1970

15 - Julia Dream (Waters) - demo 03:14Recorded : ?Primary source : ?Source for the tree : unknown gen copy

This obscure demo is probably a fake. However, it has acquired a certain famein the trading circle of Pink Floyd fans. We included it here, in order to let youmake your own opinion. It has surfaced on the same tape that contains the

(fake) demo of "Interstellar Overdrive" (one can hear the beginning of"Interstellar Overdrive" right after the end of "Julia Dream"). So, this wasprobably recorded by the same guys.

This version is often considered as a demo. In fact, it was recorded during the"Ummagumma" studio sessions at Abbey Road, but it was not included on thealbum, because the band later decided to organise the studio disc in fourparts (one part for each member). This song first appeared in June 1970 on"Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air" Harvest sampler, without the band'sagreement. In 1983, this version was included on "Works" Canadiancompilation, this time with the band's agreement.

Note : it is also said that at some point Roger says "Bring Back My Guitar", but wehaven't been able to find this sentence during the song (or nothing that could beclearly identified as this).

Pink Floyd made at least 6 attempts to compose music that could fit in thedesert sex sequence of the film. "Oenone", from Greek mythology, is the name of a nymph deserted by herhusband, Paris, for Helen of troy. Some prefer to spell this outtake "Oneone",because it would be pronounced "oh-nee-oh-nee", the same way as the end ofZabriskie Point's director name, Michelangelo AntONIONI. From a biography of Belgian surrealist painter Ren Magritte. Although thisdocumentary was first released in 1978, it is possible that the music has beenrecorded several years before. For instance, during Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4,the strange keyboards sounds are very similar to those one can hear during"On The Run" sequence of "Live At Pompeii", where Roger Waters is trying toget different sounds from the synthesizer (this could make sense, since both"Magritte" and "Live At Pompeii" were directed by Adrian Maben). Someattribute these low-pitched pulses to Adrian Maben himself, although he's notcredited as music composer for this documentary. The song that can be heardduring Part 5 and Part 6 seems to be an unreleased song performed by PinkFloyd. Part 8 contains an extract from "Obscured By Clouds".Note that we didn't include the whole documentary soundtrack here, we justtook the snippets containing music by Roger Waters (most probably). So, partsof the documentary are missing, but the music is uncut.

Part 9 and Part 10 contain the same piece of music as Part 3 of "TheArt Of Tripping" (keyboards with high pitched guitar on the top, a la"Marooned"). The Italian film was released worldwide in 1999, with the English title "LegendOf 1900". A new soundtrack album ("Legend Of 1900") was released, and theversion of "Lost Boys Calling" is slightly different from the version on theItalian soundtrack. The vocals were re-recorded, and a guitar solo by EdwardVan Halen was added. Curiously, there's also a slight change in the lyrics:during the last verse, Roger sings "when I hear those seabirds cry", while onthe Italian soundtrack version, it's "when she hears those seabirds cry".
