OUR ASSOCIATION...ICRI, the only association in the concrete industry devoted solely to repair and restoration, publishes a bimonthly magazine and technical guidelines for concrete repair, and cosponsors the World of Concrete. Local chapters provide regional networking opportunities. Worldwide membership include contractors, manufacturers, engineers, distributors, owners, and other professionals with a common goal: prolonging the useful life of concrete through quality repair, restoration, and protection.

OUR MISSION...The mission of the International Concrete Repair Institute is to be a leading resource for education and information to improve the quality of repair, restoration, and protection of concrete and other structures in accordance with consensus criteria.

LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

As everyone in the repair industry is busy, Labor Day sneaks up on us as a reminder that summer is coming to a close. Based on discussions with ICRI members, it seems as though we have a lot of projects still in full swing and a number of new projects starting late in the season. The size and the extent of the structural repair projects seem to be getting larger.

This makes me reflect on where the repair industry was 25 years ago in regards to both repair methods and materials. What a long way we have come! So many improvements have been made in materials, cathodic protection and repair procedures. It is inspirational how research, testing and evaluation of repair methods and materials have all come together with the aid of top professionals in the industry at ICRI. Better than that, is the sharing of information between competitors, which is found in no other industry. We need to continue to inspect and police our own repairs, to make sure they are being performed properly. With quality control and the aid of ICRI certification programs, we can take the repair industry to the next level.

This is a reminder of the importance of ICRI, repair procedures and technician certification programs. I’d like to invite you to attend our upcoming September Dinner meeting on 9/18/18 at the Erie Café where Ken Lozen will be speaking on the ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician (CSRT) Certification Program and the Impact on the ACI 562 repair code.

Sincerely,

Jim FadellinICRI Chicago Chapter President

On April 17, 2018, The Westwood Tavern hosted a joint event for the Chicago Chapter of ICRI and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). Peter Tarara and Tim Fitzgerald from Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. and Steve Genovese from Western Specialty Contractors presented Distress and Repair of Precast Parking Decks.

The presentation focused on common issues observed in pre-topped double-tee precast parking garage decks, performance issues related to flange-to-flange connections, various repair techniques that have been successfully used in the past, and construction methods and coordination. The specific parking deck case study highlighted solutions to a variety of problems ranging from partial collapse of the double-tees, significant cracking adjacent to the double-tee flange connectors, failed connections and water leakage throughout. The presenters also emphasized the construction logistics of the project to satisfy the owner’s daily parking requirements.

All 80 members from ICRI and PCI enjoyed the delicious food, presentation and networking. Our thanks go out to our presenters and our friends at PCI who helped make the dinner meeting such a success.

23RD ANNUAL GOLF OUTING HIGHLIGHTSOn Thursday, June 7th, The Chicago Chapter of ICRI hosted our 23rd annual Golf Outing & Scholarship Fundraiser at White Pines Golf Course in Bensenville. This year’s event was another great day of golf and fun, providing a much needed break from the rigors of our industry in the midst of another busy construction season.

This year’s scholarship recipient, Dominic Raffin, will be enrolled at Purdue University, pursuing a career related to our industry. We would like to send a big thank you to our attendees, generous sponsors, and volunteers for making this another successful event.
