    Carl Rogers : 10 learningsOn Becoming a Person (This Is Me), 1961

    It does not help, in the long run, to act as though I were something

    that I am not. I am more effective when I can listen acceptantly to myself, and

    can be myself. I have found it of enormous value when I an permit myself to

    understand another person. I have found it enriching to open channels whereby others can

    communicate their feelings, their private worlds, to me. I have found it highly rewarding when I can accept another person. The more I am open to the realities in me and in the other person,

    the less do I find myself wishing to rush in to fix things. I can trust my experience. Evaluation by others is not a guide for me. What is most personal is most general.

    It has been my experience that persons have a basically positivedirection.

    There is no philosophy or belief or set of principleswhich I could encourage or persuade others to have orhold. I can only try to live by my interpretation of thecurrent meaning of my experience, and try to give

    others the permission and freedom to develop their owninward freedom and thus their own meaningfulinterpretation of their own experience.

    If there is such a thing as truth, this free individualprocess of search should, I believe, converge toward it.And in a limited way, this is also what I seem to have

    experienced.

    Carl Rogers : On Becoming a Person(The Facilitation of Personal Growth), 1961

    If I can create a relationship characterized on mypart :

    by a genuineness and transparency, inwhich I am my real feelings;

    by a warm acceptance of and prizing of theother person as a separate individual;

    by a sensitive ability to see his world andhimself as he sees them;

    . Then the other individual in the relationship :- will experience and understand aspects of himself which

    previously he has repressed;

    - will find himself better integrated, more able function

    effectively;- will become more similar to the person he would like to be;

    - will be more self-directing and self-confident;

    - will become more of a person, more unique and more self-expressive;

    - will be more understanding, more acceptant of others;

    - will be able to cope with the problems of life moreadequately and more comfortably.
