In my letter home from May 2, 1976, after sharing my priorities with my fam-ily as a way to get them clear in my own mind, I continued with this re lection, “Iamwellawarethathappiness istobefound inthestriv-ing, inworkingwith the strengthprovidedbyGod.Happi-nessisnotfoundintheendproductofcountingthefruit---because,as illustrated in Jesus’ life, it isoftenthecasethatdeathovertakesapersonbeforethereismuchfruittocount.Thefruitcanonlybecountedfullyfromthevantagepointofeternity---whereas,happinesscanindeedbeenjoyedinthepresentsimplybyappreciatingGod’sLoveinthepresent.Itis theFather’swill thatwebearmuch fruit.SometimesweneedthelightofFaithtoappreciatethefruitofGod’sever-presentLove,where,withoutFaith,we’dbeoblivioustoit.

After two good years at our Berkeley House of Studies with Fr. Lupe Sanchez, Bro. Larry Toschi, and Bro. Philip Massetti, an ordination Mass on April 3, 1976 at St. Joa-chim Church meant that Father Larry and Father Phil would be leaving Berkeley and moving on to their irst pastoral assignments. Come September, I would begin my last two years in Berkeley with Fr. Lupe, Bro. Carlos Es-quivel and Bro. Chester Starr as my companions. (More to come). Blessings, Fr. John
