A Message from Santos

What’s new for 2013

Vision, dedication and inspiration lie at the heart of our 2013 season. Maestro Arvo Volmer, our Chief Conductor and Music Director, has the vision that the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will present excellent concerts and events that show not only the Orchestra at its best in core repertoire, but how it can transform itself as a flexible ensemble to handle the jazziest of repertoire with James Morrison, the world of rock meets symphony, and epic works of the 20th century such as Britten’s War Requiem.

Our wonderfully talented 75 full-time musicians have the dedication to continue to perform at world-class standards, to present works that have been seldom played in Adelaide, and keep our industry fresh and alive with important new commissions by exemplary international composers such as James MacMillan, Arvo Pärt, Einojuhani Rautavaara, and Australia’s own Paul Stanhope, Graeme Koehne and Brett Dean.

The inspiration comes in no small part from you, our loyal subscribers and supporters, who, year after year, look at what we have on offer and come along to be entertained, challenged, immersed in splendid sound, and to enjoy.

In 2013 we present a four concert Gala Series that includes Beethoven’s 9th and 5th Symphonies; Britten’s War Requiem; and the return of one of the world’s greatest violinists, Pinchas Zukerman – and he’ll be playing what he plays best – Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, amongst other favourite works.

Our Master Series of 12 concerts (Masters ASO) presents core orchestral repertoire with international conductors and soloists. All are worthy of note, so please come to all or as many as you can throughout the year. Highlights include Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring; Britten Concertos; Brahms Symphonies; and Russian friends including Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov.

Due to popular demand we have taken four of our Master Series concerts and will be performing them on Thursdays in our new Thursdays ASO series. These concerts are at 6.30pm so you can dine afterwards with friends and family.

New for 2013 is a series we’ve called Composer in Focus ASO. Here you will find three diverse concerts, each around a theme that focuses on one composer, his contemporaries and influencers, that help to illustrate the contribution of the composer to our wonderful world of music. In 2013 we offer Vivaldi, Debussy and Sibelius – on Wednesday nights in the Adelaide Town Hall, also at 6.30pm.

Some of you will have been waiting to see what we are playing in our Spectacular ASO series. As the name suggests, we have The Blue Planet in Concert, Cirque de la Symphonie, Triple M Symphonic Rock, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, A Night in Vienna, Last Night of the Proms and James Morrison’s Christmas Cracker.

The Matinee format is new at the ASO for 2013. We will present three day-time concerts in Elder Hall, and two Tea and Symphonies in Grainger Studio. You will notice quite different artists appearing in these concerts as we look to bring international names who are touring Australia at the time, as well as our own soloists from the Orchestra.

Again we bring you two concerts in St Peter’s Cathedral, designed with busy people in mind. These one-hour concerts start at 7pm and the programs are simply fantastic! Arvo Pärt, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Brett Dean, James MacMillan – all important composers for ensuring the ecology and longevity of orchestral music.

Learning continues to be a focus for us at the ASO and we have quite a full calendar for all the family to enjoy. In November 2012 we produce a dedicated Learning brochure and updates are available on our website throughout the year. We thank SA Power Networks for their sponsorship of this program.

It gives me tremendous pleasure to welcome you to our ASO concerts for this 2013 season.

Over the last nine years, it has been a great privilege and a joy to make music with the ASO and witness our Orchestra develop into one of the finest ensembles in Australia. It is now playing at a world-class level. Also, I feel very privileged to have enjoyed your continuing support so that we have been able to bring the greatest classical music to you in our elegant hometown of Adelaide.

Musically, 2013 promises to be a thrilling year. Together, we will play visionary music, collaborate with the most dedicated artists on the planet, and give you a feast of inspirational and memorable concerts. 2013 is the centenary of the birth of the great British composer Benjamin Britten. I believe Britten is one of the finest composers of the 20th century. We bookend 2013 with Britten’s music, starting with his virtuosic Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell and closing it with the wonderful Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. For me, one of the undoubted highlights of our year will be Britten’s epic and powerful War Requiem which we will perform in conjunction with Adelaide Festival Centre Trust featuring massed choirs, a huge orchestra and international soloists of the highest calibre.

Also in 2013, the ASO and I reach the end of our journey traversing Mahler’s magnificent symphonic canon with a performance of his final symphony, the Ninth. For me, this has been a very personal and profound musical experience. I do hope that you will join us for what will be a special concert in August, as, for the moment, we say farewell to Gustav Mahler.

I welcome returning musical friends such as James Ehnes, Nikolai Demidenko, Sophie Rowell and Steven Osborne to Adelaide, alongside a host of wonderful artists making their debuts with the ASO: Yan Pascal Tortelier, Mark Wigglesworth, Louis Lortie and many more.

But, most importantly, I welcome you to our year of music making – a season that, I hope, will delight you in its vision, its dedication and its inspiration.

ASO’s Chief Conductor, Arvo Volmer, raises the curtain on our 2013 Season with Benjamin Britten’s dazzling orchestral showpiece, Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell in this, the centenary year of the composer’s birth. Croatian-born pianist Dejan Lazić makes his Adelaide debut in the most-loved piano concerto in the repertoire, Rachmaninov’s glorious Second Piano Concerto.

Britten War Requiem

As part of the ASO’s Britten centenary celebrations, this performance of his War Requiem is centre stage and one of the major events in Adelaide’s cultural year. Composed for two orchestras, massed choirs and soloists, it is Britten’s hugely powerful response to the horrors of war. On the title page of the score, the composer quotes the war poet, Wilfred Owen: “My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity. All a poet can do today is warn…”

This 80 minute work will be performed without interval.

“The Jascha Heifetz of our day”, The Globe and Mail. Violinist James Ehnes makes a much-awaited and welcome return to Adelaide to perform Benjamin Britten’s classically-inspired Violin Concerto. Arvo Volmer opens the concert with music by another composer celebrating a big birthday (his 200th), Richard Wagner: the sublime Prelude to Act One of Lohengrin. To close the concert, Volmer directs the ASO in Brahms’ great last symphony, his Fourth.

Tchaikovsky Manfred

Tchaikovsky’s Manfred is the Russian composer’s response to the poem of the same name by Lord Byron. In this symphonic fantasy, Tchaikovsky’s Manfred adventures in the Alps, encounters magical waterfalls, and then, in the best romantic tradition, witnesses an infernal orgy, and dies! The ASO is joined by Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin (winner of the First Prize at the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels) for Prokofiev’s most popular piano concerto, his pyrotechnical Third.

Whistleblower was commissioned by Carol and Norman Schueler in 2006 in memory of Mrs Gogo Schueler.

When Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking ballet score The Rite of Spring was first performed at the Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris 100 years ago, there was an infamous riot in the audience. In this not-to-be-missed ASO centenary performance, one of the leading French conductors on the planet, Yan Pascal Tortelier, brings Stravinsky’s visceral orchestral showpiece to life in a performance which is certain to capture the mystery and great creative power of Spring.

In this colourful concert, American pianist and George Gershwin specialist, Kevin Cole, brings two of the composer’s greatest works to Adelaide’s concert platform – his virtuosic Concerto in F and the riotous Rhapsody in Blue. Cole is recognised as one of the most insightful interpreters of Gershwin’s music and has gained praise for his performances from the Gershwin Estate. He is joined by American conductor Marc Taddei for what promises to be an irresistible night with the ASO.

Mahler Symphony No 9

Arvo Volmer and the ASO reach the conclusion of their epic Mahler symphony cycle. Conductor and Orchestra began this journey seven years ago and their adventure ends with a performance of Mahler’s last completed symphonic creation - his profound and mighty Ninth, described by the composer Alban Berg as music which “expresses an extraordinary love of the earth”.

This 80-minute symphony will be performed without an interval.

Shostakovich Symphony No 10

Music by two great and revolutionary composers: Beethoven and Shostakovich. Arvo Volmer conducts Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony 60 years after its first performance in Leningrad in 1953, the year in which Joseph Stalin died. In this liberating symphony, music rejoices in the “decadence and Western disharmony” that the dictator so hated. Canadian pianist Louis Lortie joins the ASO in repertoire for which he is rightly renowned.

James MacMillan Oboe Concerto (Australian Premiere)


“Mark Wigglesworth’s lovingly-crafted Wagner is one of the revelations of recent years”, The Times. As part of Wagner’s 2013 bicentennial celebrations, Wigglesworth opens this concert with some of the most passionate music ever written - the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde. Also, new music from Scotland with the Australian premiere of James MacMillan’s Oboe Concerto, played by Nicholas Daniel for whom the work was composed in 2010. The concert ends with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony with its high-voltage finale described by Donald Tovey as full of “Bacchic fury”.

This concert is presented in conjunction with the Austral Doubleasian Reed Society.

Britten Piano Concerto


Arvo Volmer’s final concert this season opens with music very close to the Estonian conductor’s heart - Jean Sibelius’ darkly orchestrated tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter. Volmer and the ASO conclude their marking of the Benjamin Britten centenary with pianist Steven Osborne in a performance of Britten’s Piano Concerto for which Osborne won a Gramophone Award in 2009. After the interval, Volmer leads his ASO players in a symphony which the waspish German critic Eduard Hanslick dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth”.

Musical sparks will fly as Costa Rican conductor Giancarlo Guerrero and Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko join forces for Scriabin’s romantic and exquisitely beautiful Piano Concerto. By way of contrast, the program ends with the high drama of Tchaikovsky’s powerful and fate-inspired Fourth Symphony.

Arvo Volmer’s final concert this season opens with music very close to the Estonian conductor’s heart - Jean Sibelius’ darkly orchestrated tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter. Volmer and the ASO conclude their marking of the Benjamin Britten centenary with pianist Steven Osborne in a performance of Britten’s Piano Concerto for which Osborne won a Gramophone Award in 2009. After the interval, Volmer leads his ASO players in a symphony which the waspish German critic Eduard Hanslick dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth” – Brahms’ First Symphony.

Support a Musical Chair

For those of you who would like a more intimate way to connect with your Orchestra, consider a Musical Chair sponsorship.

A Musical Chair plays a vital role in maintaining high quality symphonic concerts and community programs. You are able to choose the musician’s chair you wish to support and your gift is recognised in the Master Series Concert Programs, and through special invitations to events where you can get to know “your” musician. Musical Chairs sponsorship opportunities are $2,500 per chair, and are renewable annually at any point in the year.

Chairman’s Dinner with the Artists

The ASO provides you with the opportunity to meet some of the best international and national artists, gaining a unique insight into their craft, talent, and that evening’s performance.

What is a Subscription?A subscription is the purchase of three or more different concerts per person from across the 2013 Season listed on the price guide. If you would like additional single tickets for any of the chosen concerts, they can be included at the single ticket price.

ASO’s subscriptions allow you to choose 3 or more concerts throughout the 2013 Season that are listed on the price guide on page 39.

Save on handling fees

Subscribers pay a lower ticket handling fee across their subscription purchase.

The best seats in the house

By subscribing, you secure the best seats available in the concert venue, before single tickets go on sale on 3 December 2013. If you subscribe to 9 or more concerts in the Master Series, your same seats can be renewed each year.

Buy now, pay later

Subscribers can opt to pay in two instalments to secure their seats for the 2013 Season. To pay by instalments, the booking form must be received by 1 December. Final payment will be processed in January 2013.

Excludes concerts in the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and additional single tickets purchased.

Ticket Exchanges

Subscribers are able to exchange or upgrade their tickets to any other subscription concert in the Master Series.

Exchanges are subject to availability and handling fee is applicable

How subscriptions are processed

Renewing 2012 9+ Master Series subscribers to the 2013 Master Series are processed first. Other subscriptions will be processed in order of receipt. Tickets will be mailed from December 2012. Single tickets go on sale on 3 December 2012.

1. Indicate the number of adult, concession card holders and child(ren) and the respective number of concerts they wish to subscribe to.

2. Choose your seating area preference. If your choice isn’t available, you will be given the best available seats at the time of processing.

3. Choose the concerts you wish to subscribe to by ticking the box next to the concert title, choose the reserve, circle the day you wish to attend, then write how many tickets per concert and the price of each ticket and subtotal these across the page. Finally, tally the total figure for each concert title in the last column. Continue this process for each concert you wish to subscribe to.

4. Add any additional tickets not part of the subscription.

5. Add any voluntary donation you wish. Donations over $2 are tax deductable

6. Postage and handling fees. For any Adelaide Entertainment Centre concerts add $2.95 per form, and for other venues add $6.60 per subscriber.

7. Fill in the subscriber and payment details on the back of the form.

8. Post, fax or deliver the form in person as per the detail on the form.

The Friends of the ASO is a large fund-raising body which provides significant support to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the form of donations to the annual appeal, sponsorship of Musical Chairs, study grants to players for professional development, and subsidies for musical instruments and equipment. We present an annual program of varied musical events for our members, which are well-attended and greatly enjoyed.
