page 2troop leader could help pave the way for two of the greatest living missionaries?I wish I could have known himl Were there other influential people in theirl ives who have since been forgotten?I t 's no coincidence that some congregations year-after-year inspireyoung people to enter missions. It 's not by chance that certain Bible collegesare known as mission-minded schools. Somewhere in those groups are men andwomen so committed to missions that they ignited th e same committment in others.

In every gangling, clumsy kid is a fantastic potential to be a man ofGod, if some mature Christian could just ignite his committment. May you be ami ss iona ry - ign i te r .

FREE PLANE FAREJ . Russell Morse and I were ridina through our dis t r ic t when heshouted over the bus noises, "The more I see, the more I'm imoressed with thegreat opportunity for the gospel you have here."Yes, I said, within ten years half-a-million people are exoected

to be l i v ing here ."Later Brother Morse added, "Why, you could use several good coupleso u t h e r e ..."

"Probably, but I don't know how to recruit them. I tried all lastyear in the states, and didn't ge t even one person to come.""They need to see it!" he said. "If they saw what I see, they'drea l ize the opportuni t ies tha t God has here ."I agree. I've offered free one-way plane tickets to anyone who willtry working here, and sti l l I haven't had any takers." That offer sti l l holds. If you're not happy with doing just some thing for God . . .If you want the Lord to get the most use possible out of youIf you want your faith exercised to the limits (I Peter 1:7)If you want to be on the front line against sin (Romans 15:20)

" I found it. You can f i n d it t o o . " i s t h e s logan being usedby thousands of churches to a t t r a c t mill ions t o Christ in c i t i e s throughout the world. At f i r s t , I was opposed to the way Campus Crusade forChrist had organized this campaign, because i t actually hindered instead ofhelping most churches from leading people to C hr is t.But by the time th e campaign got to Hong Kong, many of theweaknesses had been remedied. I a l s o bel ieved t h a t Tuen Miin was ready t orespond to the gospe l, so we decided to take part. Little did I know thatGod was using us to answer the prayers of a group o f m in is te rs I had nevermet. I had been praying that God would show us some way to reachresponsive adults in Tuen Mun. There was every reason to believe that thiscampaign was God 's answer, but at every turn Satan threw up apparento b s t a c l e s , and God answered with r e p l i e d p r a y e r s .1. We joined within days of being too late to join.

    2. Of some 30 t r a i n i n g s e s s i o n s s ch ed ul ed , o nly two weres t i l l available, and both conflicted with our services (which God neatlyf i x e d ) . 3. A t r a f f i c jam made me an hour late to the l a s t trainingsession. (Temptation kept s ay ing 'Turn around and go home.) But becauseI was l a t e , I accidentally got into th e wrong section and got valuablem a t e r i a l s , I would n o t n o r m a l l y have g o t t e n .

    4. The Chinese m i n i s te rs i n o u r d i s t r i c t d i d n o t know weexisted. So by th e time I met with them, they had already divided upresponsibilities. There appeared to be no room for me to do anything. Ididn' t know they had been praying for someone from Tuen Mun to help,because o the r m in is te rs in Tuen Mun seemed un in te re st ed i n evangelism.5. They had set aside one week to s atu ra te the d i s t r i c twith l e a f l e t s . They d iv id ed t he d i s t r i c t in to six areas. Each dayvolunteers would gather in a different area and pass out l e a f l e t s .God seemed t o have h i s eyes on Tuen Mun. Tuen Mun was t ob e t h e first a r e a o n Monday.The ministers wanted Monday to be the best day, for i f itflopped, volunteers would not want to help on other days. 3,000 tractswere s e t aside for Tuen Mun. So I asked, "Who's in charge of dividingt he vol un te er s up t o reach a l l of Tuen Mun?"They replied, "You and the other Tuen Mun ministers are."'Surely not me,' I thought, ' I 'm a foreigner, and a newcomer to t h i s area, b e s i d e s . ' So I began v i s i t i n g the other Tuen Munministers. I t soon became apparent that for good reasons none could help.My coworker Peter sa id , "What are you going to do? How cana w h i t e man o r g a n i z e Chinese?"

" I d o n ' t know," I s a i d . But with Wayfull Jew's h elp I gotorganized and started surveying Tuen Mun to divide i t up. I soon realizedthat Tuen Mun had nearly 8,000 homes so 3,000 l e a f l e t s would never beenough. What is more, i t rained off and on throughout the preceeding week. We're on water rationing. We need rain, but would God stay the rain cloudsfor one week, j u s t as he had stayed the sun for Joshua?Monday morning came. The heavy overcast kept down the sun'sheat, but i t didn't rain that day nor again unt il a fter the last evangelisticmeeting was over on Saturday night. It has rained regularly since then.

    Volun t e e r s s t a r t e d coining, 20 - 50 - 100 and ove r . No o t h e rday had as many volunteers show up as God provided fo r Tuen Mun.

    The chairman brought s ix bundles o f l e a f l e t s . He and Ithought the re were 500 in a bundle , o r the 3,000 he had s e t as ide . " Ist h a t enough?" He asked.

    " I d on 't th in k so ." How cou l d I ,w i t h 8 ,000 homes? So hes e n t fo r more . But we w ere w ro ng . Each bundle had 1 ,00 0 n ot 500 l e a f l e t s .So about 8 ,000 l e a f l e t s were passed ou t in Tuen Mun t h a t day.

Just as we were finishing supper on May 10th, Joyce discoveredi t was time to go to the hospital. We live twenty miles from the hospita l o I t could easily take two hours to travel, so we didn't want to wastemuch time. I prayed for a safe trip before we lef t .Prai se the Lord, we caught a bus-van right away, and therewasn't much t ra ff ic . We'd ridden in bus-vans many time, and none hadever Jbroken down, but i t did that night in a very unlikely place toget another ride. "Lord," I prayed, "this is in your hands. Help usto keep trusting you." No sooner had we crossed the street than anotherride was available.Joyce had wanted a private room instead of being in the 16-bedmaternity ward, but there was a mix-up at the hospital and no rooms wereavailable. 'But, the ward didn't have any beds either, so they put herin a private room meant for nurses,at ward prices. Praise the Lord forh is economy.

Steven Linville Anderson, a fine 6 lbs. 8 ounce boy, was bornat 3s30 a.m. pn May 11th. Both Joyce and SCeve came home two days laterand are doing fine. Steve's birth cost twice as much as Sandi's, butthaxiks to the generous gifts of many of you, we were able to meet the cost,Joyce's mother. Mrs. Wvmore. came on May 17th to be with usfor two weeks. We've enjoyed her company; and since she is our forwarding agent, she appreciated the chance to see %Aat we're doinghere. ^ .Carl and Carolyn Palmer, minister of missions at Los GatosChristian Church will also be here at the end of May to visit us and

Wayfull and Helen Jew.We praise God for our record attendance last week; 42 inin Sunday School and 9 in worship. But, -please keep praying that somemight accept sa lva t ion .Chinese in our area have been very busy this month worshippingthe Queen of Heaven or the "Great Mother." The Queen of Heaven is **-doubtedly the most important diety^ the average Chinese here. She isparticularly important to fishermen and farmers because she is supposeto bring good harvests. The festivities include colorful parades intraditional dress, dragon dances, l ion dances, feasts, sacrifices, offerings to the temples and the great Chinese operas.AUvillages and prominent local citiMns are involved. It's an exciting

circus atmosphere. The dedicated worship of this goddess may be thelargest single obstacle to people being saved in this area. Pleasepray that God might begin opening their eyes.

AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITYDuring the Here's Lire Campaign in April, I began designing a Chinesetract to make up for weaknesses in Campus Crusade s Four Spiritual Laws.

I t was jus t published. . ^ ^I also worked with a dozen teens from 3 denominations in our areapassing out tracts. Each congregation received far more prospect sthan we could follow up. Some were just too far away, like from a villagethat is l i terally at th e eid of the road.Little did I knew that in the weeks after the Campaign, those teenskept contact with each other. They were disappointed that their ministersshowed so little interest In evangelism, so^^they started a fellowship called"The Advancement of tl:s Guspel in Tuen Mun. uThey also began coinparing prospect lists and discovered that each oftheir congregations had. received several names from that village at road sLast Sunday, two spokesmen came to me. They said: "We've arranged witha school in that village to hold a five-day evangelistic campaign In theschool's building. We'll camp in the school, hold ?BS In the morning, calldoor-to-door in the afternoon and hold evangelistic meetings in the evening. We wane to know If you would help. Every other minister is unavailable.(So, I was their last choice!) "What do you want me to do? I asked."Help during the days and preach the evangelistic meetings each night, they sa-d^ enough already, but I was getting excited about this idea.

"Do you expect to continue anything after that week? ^"The village is all shacks," they said, "and there is lots of scraplumber from the lumber mill nearby. We think we can build a makeshiftbuilding and continue church services every week.(Can you imagine that? These high school students want to startchurch!) "Let me have three days to think about it , I said.Last night, when I told her I would help, she blurted out. Oh, praisethe Lord. I thought you were going to say No, too.Evangelism Is still not very fast in Hong Kong, but I believe thatGod is opening up more opportunities each day if we just have the spiritualmaturltv to take advantage of them. Thanks so much for your concern on our

WHAT A CAMP!Last month, I helped in one of the most unique camps I've ever been in.Ten young adults camped in one of Hong Kong's villages for four and a halfdays in order to s tar t a church there. The village, named Lung-gu-taan has about 700 people and is on theouter limits of Hong Kong toward China. The inhabitants and their forefathers have lived in Lung-gu-taan longer than the United States has existed;yet we know of only one other time when anyone preached the gospel there. Two or three decades ago, Lung-gu-taan was known mainly as a haven forthieves, highway robbers and pirates of the high seas. The inhabitants are a non-Chinese race common the the shores of Chinaknown as the Hakka or "Guest Race". Although most of them speak Cantonese, their mother tongue is Haddanese which I am only now learning, but I can tfind any books to help me since it 's basically an unwritten language.Nearly everyone in Lung-gu-taan is related, so they are forbidden tomarry one another. Boys go elsewhere to find brides, and the girls areaway as brides to other villages. Hakkas are basically farmers. Women tendthe fields, pigs, chickens and children while men get an education and go

    f ind work in th e c i t y .

The ten campers, from 17 to 21 years old, come from Tuen Mto's Baptistchurch and Missionary Alliance church. They are committed to the importance of evangelism, but haven't gotten any encouragement from their ownchurches, so they asked me to help with this work. The camp was held in Lung-gu-taan's primary school adjoining a templeto the Queen of Heaven. Each night we washed ourselves by candle-light inthe outhouse. Then we pushed the school desks together and slept in ourclothes on top of them, covering ourselves with window curtains or towelsto keep off the mosquitoes. The campers handled all cooking and responsib i l i t i e s themselves. ( I lost five pounds.)Early each morning, I expounded the Bible for the campers. Then, they held a Vacation Bible School for the children of Lung-gu-taan. About150 different children attended with an avarage of over 80 a day. In theafternoons, we went door-to-door calling, relaxed and prepared for otherresponsibilit ies. In the evening, the head camper taught us how to dochild evangelism. The last afternoon, the campers put on a play followedby an evangelistic appeal by myself for anyone from the village. We hope to follow up these initial contacts immediately with a coore-spondence course and then rent a place in Lung-gu-taan for a weekly preachingpoint. We earnestly desire your prayers for this work.

    WORK DECLINES

As you know, for the past year we have been trying to start a churchin the "Three Holies" area near where we live. June attendances were sogood that we thought we were on the way to becoming a church. But a completereversal happened when our Chinese helpers left. No one attended serviceson seven of the past ten Sundays, so we have visited churches in Mong Kokand Mei Foo for our own s p i r i t u a l benefi t .

    I realize that I have made countless mistakes over the past year,and that because of personality and ethnic background I am not the idealcandidate for this situation. But, I know of no one else willing to dothis work, and there is nothing.else I would rather do. So, i t seems likew e ' r e t h e b e s t ones a v a i l a b l e .

I also r ea li ze tha t the "Three Holies" area is basically resistantto the gospel. So, I've considered closing the work completely. However,11,000 people are expected to move into the area-within one-year, and Ibelieve they will be more receptive. So, we've decided to maintain contactwith the area, take advantage of opportunities as they arise, continue aSaturday Bible study for children and maybe advertize a correspondencecourse. However, we intend to put most of our effort into other responsibilities. Again, we would appreciate your prayers for us in this area.

    MONG KOK

I have just finished leading Mong Kok Church of Christ through a nine-week Church Growth workshop. Mong Kok is nearing independence to be self-governing and self-supporting. This involves a lot of faith (I'll be leadingthem into Faith-Promise shortly), planning, the establishment of soundBiblical leaders, incorporation and the purchase of an apartment for worship. They, too, earnestly need your prayers to solve each obstacle as i t comes up.

    SANDI AND STEVE

Steve is four months and fifteen pounds big now and likes to smile a ^lot, Sandi likes to feed and take care of him, and even wants to hold himiSandi is just three years old. Many children her age are already attendingkindergarten here. We'd like her to attend one where she can fit in andyet leam enough Cantonese to be able to attend public schools. Waitinglists for kindergartens are often one and two years long, so I hope we canf i n d a suitable o n e s o o n .

This fall, I^ng Kbk Church of Christ took a big step toward Christianmaturity. They set faith-goals for this^year^in their first Faith-FtaniseRally in five areas: church budget, mission giving, time spent serving thechurch and time spent evangelizing, and how many people they expected God tohelp them lead to Christ during this year. Then they started trusting Godfor TTOZG growth than they bad ever experienced or expected before.God is already blessing their comrnittment by faith to do His will.During the past year, no ninth's giving ever exceeded $HOOKK, but throu^God's strength they gave $979HK in September and^over $1,000HK m October, which is even more than their faith-promise committment. And two peoplesaid that tiine spent serving the church is^no problem. However, how Godplans to bless them evangelistically and with converts remains to be seen.Another Big Step Toward Maturity
