Translations Jade: What songs are you listening? Summer: Nothing much, listening to Stephanie Cheng’s “13-year old elephant.” Jade: Is that a new song? Summer: Yes, it came out a few weeks ago. Jade: What app do you normally use to listen to music, Summer? Summer: I like to use JOOX to listen to music, because I like Cantonese songs. Jade: What is JOOX? I’ve never heard of this app. Summer: You don’t know about this app? Every Hong Konger uses this app to listen to

music. There are both Chinese and English songs, (and) there are also many Korean songs.

Jade: Isn’t that so nice? I also really like Cantonese songs. Summer: Another advantage of this app is that it usually includes the newest Cantonese

songs. Jade: That is so great! I usually use Spotify to listen to Cantonese songs, but it has very

few new songs. Does this app have ads? Summer: There is, but just like Spotify, you don’t get ads if you are a member. Jade: So are you a member? Summer: I think it’s not a big deal to have ads, therefore I didn’t buy a membership. Jade: I have to download it later too. Summer: But I don’t know if you are able to download it. This app was downloaded when I

was in Hong Kong. Jade: Then I will give it a try later. Summer: Sounds good.

Mini-lesson Notes

# Besides its definition “come” as a verb, 嚟 (lei4) can also be used as a final modal particle in

嚟㗎 (lei4-gaa3) and 嚟嘅 (lei4-ge3). In this lesson, “...嚟㗎 (lei4-gaa1)” is placed at the end of

a sentence to strength a question with doubt. The main verb of the question is usually 係 (hai6).

Example 1. 你唔⾷餛飩，你係唔係廣東⼈嚟㗎？

(nei5 m4 sik6 wan4-tan1, nei5 hai6 m4 hai6 gwong2-dung1 jan4 lei4 gaa3?) You don’t eat wonton, are you really Cantonese? Example 2. 呢⽀係⽔定係酒嚟㗎?

(ni1-zi1 hai6 seoi2 ding6-hai6 zau2 lei4 gaa3?) Is this a bottle of water or wine?

# 咁 (gam3) vs. 噉 (gam2)

咁 (gam3) pre-modifies adjectives, meaning “such,” “so,” and “very.”

噉 (gam2) can be applied at the beginning of a sentence to mean “therefore” and “so.” or simply

as a filler word. Example 1. 點解呢度咁凍？(dim2-gaai2 ni1-dou6 gam3 dung3?)

Why is it so cold here? Example 2. 你咁好⼈，我會幫你！(nei5 gam3 hou2 jan4, ngo5 wui5 bong1 nei5!)

You are such a nice person; I will help you. A: 有好多嘢飲呀。(jau5 hou2 do1 je5 jam2 aa3)

There are so many drinks. B: 噉你要咩呀？ (gam2 nei5 jiu3 me1 aa3?)
