30 June 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians, Greetings from the Marist Family and a warm welcome back to Term 3. We hope that you have had time to bond with your sons/charges and that they are energized for the new semester ahead. This will be an exciting semester during which Marists can expect to continue to hone their talents, deepen their values and build their character through the various Character and Citizenship Education programmes lined up for them with the end of nurturing them to become gentleman of faith, vision and service. As the semester would culminate in the PSLE and Semestral Assessment 2 and in late September/October, we encourage parents to continue to partner us in monitoring and guiding your sons/wards to keep up with their daily work. We believe that with consistent work and good time management, Marists would be able to balance the various aspects of school life well. As mentioned before, we view errors made by Marists as opportunities for Marists to learn and as such would like to remind parents not to deliver items that your sons/wards might have forgotten to bring to school for them. We would also like Marists to learn to be responsible for their learning by writing down in their Marist Buddy the homework given by teachers rather than have teachers emailing the homework to parents. We seek your partnership in guiding your sons/wards in these areas and encourage them to keep it up. 1. Student Achievements

Marists involved in school teams continue to train during the school vacation, in preparation for their National competitions. Our Bowling, Softball and Table-Tennis school teams will be commencing their competitions soon and we know they will continue to give of their best. We would like to congratulate the Robotics Team in their recent achievement as follows:

CCA Division Achievement

Robotics Category B Singapore Tech Challenge 2017 - RoboGladiators Division - Champion Award - 1st Team placing

2. Youth Day School Holiday In celebration of Youth Day, 3 July (Monday) is a school holiday. School will resume as usual on 4 July (Tuesday). 3. 59th Founder’s Day The school will be celebrating its 59th Founder's Day on 28 July (Friday). As a Marist school, we combine the celebration of our school’s founding with the 200th anniversary of the founding of Marist Brothers Institute. The Founder’s Day Concert and Award Ceremony which is jointly organised by our staff from both the primary and secondary section in the evening of 28 July would be held to commemorate the founding of the mission and the school, to affirm Marists both from the primary and secondary sections for their fine achievements in various domains – character development, CCAs, leadership and academic, and to recognise contributions of our staff and friends of the school. From this year, we will also recognise the primary Marists for their achievements in CCA via the Colours Award, Stephen Loh Sportsmanship Award and Sports Boy Award; as well as overall development via the Marist of the Year Award. It is also a platform for our students to showcase their talents through various performances. This year, students from our Primary Section would be putting up a special drama depicting the life and times of St. Marcellin Champagnat. Due to space constraints, award winners and selected Primary 6 class representatives will also be invited to the Founder's Day Concert Cum Award Presentation in the evening in the secondary section. 4. Attendance Taking The school is embarking on a new attendance-taking software and as a result, you may receive SMS alerts informing you of your son’s/ward’s absence from school. Do call the school should you require any clarification. 5. SAP Twinning Programme with Xi’an Gaoxin Schools As part of our efforts to broaden the horizons of Marists and deepen their appreciation of Chinese culture, we have established a partnership with Xi’an Gao Xin No. 1 and No. 2 Primary Schools. Marists who participated in the Xi'an Cultural Exchange Programme, will be hosting the students from Xi'an from 6 to 11 July. It is an opportunity for Marists to show their appreciation and reciprocate the hospitality shown to Marists during their recent school visits to the schools, as well as other Marists to interact with their peers from China.

6. Home-Based Learning (HBL)

In the event of an unscheduled school closure, Home-Based Learning (HBL) is the closest provision for classroom learning. It aims to keep students gainfully occupied at home without having to compromise on their learning needs. This year, the HBL exercise is scheduled on 5 July (Wednesday). All P1 to P6 students are involved in this exercise and need not report to school on that day. Instead, they will log in to our Learning Management System (LMS) and complete their learning tasks from home on that day. The school’s Student Care Centre will operate from 7 am on that day. 7. Transition to Secondary Education – Parent Seminar MOE will be organising the ‘Transition to Secondary Education’ Parent Seminar for parents of Primary 5 or Primary 6 students on 15 July 2017 (Saturday) at the NTUC Centre.
