Першу премію «REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts» вручено молодому драматургу Андрієві Кушніреві з Торонто.

Since its founding in 1963 the Shevchenko Foundation has sustained the Ukrainian Canadian community by gathering and granting funds with the sole purpose of advancing the development of Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada.

The past year has been an extraordinary one, celebrated for innovation through the launch of new funding programs and events, and marked by significant farewells and welcomes.

In September 2018 the Shevchenko Foundation launched an innovative and progressive program aimed at giving young Canadian artists in our community the opportunity to reach higher, further and deeper into their craft through the REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts award. The first awarding of the REACH Mentorship was to Toronto playwright, Andrew Kushnir. We applaud the generous contribution of the Ihnatowycz Family Foundation for inspiring and supporting this program.

This year we welcomed 50 students from Ukraine, who through the foresight and generosity of the Myhal Family Foundation and Western NIS Enterprise Fund, were selected to participate in the Mitacs Globalink international student training program. It is significant to note, that these students represented the first-ever grouping of students from Ukraine to have the opportunity to take part in the Mitacs program.

The year also marked the recognition of the Foundation’s effective stewardship and leadership of the community it serves. The Shevchenko Foundation was honored to present one of the most successful gala awards events ever conceived in our community – the Tryzub Awards Gala, held in Toronto in May, 2019. The Tryzub Awards recognized the exceptional professional and philanthropic efforts of three honorees: James and Louise Temerty, Ian Ihnatowycz, and Diane Francis. I extend a special thank you to Rayla and George Myhal and their organizing committee for this exceptional fundraising event.

The generosity of our donors and partners ultimately serves the principal purpose of the Shevchenko Foundation, which is to ensure the development and promotion of our Ukrainian Canadian heritage through the financial support of projects in the fields of Arts, Education, Community Development and Heritage. This year, the Board of Directors allocated over $440,000 to 71 projects, ranging from the Toronto premiere of playwright Lianna Makuch’s Blood of our Soil, to the Ukrainian Archival Collections in Canada Conference, held in Edmonton. In addition, 21 students, both graduate and undergraduate, received bursaries to further their studies, or to travel to Ukraine for language studies. It is also significant to note that over 20% of the year’s total funding allocation came from funds, established through our signature capital campaign – Our Legacy Our Tomorrow. We thank our donors for their capital contributions, and welcome further donations to our permanent campaign.

As the year came to a close, we were met with the retirement of the Shevchenko Foundation’s first Executive Director, Lesia Szwaluk, and the first Chair of the Investment Committee, Wally Shoemay. Words do not adequately express the gratitude of the Foundation to Lesia for her ground-breaking contribution over 18 years to shaping the Foundation into the professional and accessible agency that it is today. The Foundation is equally grateful to Wally Shoemay for his founding role in the creation of the Foundation’s Investment Committee and 25 years of dedicated focus on the critically-important stewardship of the Foundation’s investment portfolio.

As we say goodbye to two giants of our Foundation, so we welcome our new Executive Director, Bohdana Bashuk, and new Chair of the Investment Committee, Dave Chucko. Both these individuals have provided years of service to the Shevchenko Foundation, and are committed to its mission and vision. We further welcome two new members of our team – Walter (Wolodymyr) Dlugosh, former CEO of Winnipeg’s Carpathia Credit Union and now the Foundation’s Finance Officer, and Donna Korade, our new Fund Development Officer.

I am grateful to the members of our Board of Directors, Investment Committee and staff for their unwavering focus on the best interests of the Shevchenko Foundation, and their dedication to its successful stewardship. We in Canada are fortunate, indeed, to have such steadfast commitment to our Ukrainian community.

May God bless,

ANDREW HLADYSHEVSKY, Q.C. PRESIDENT

FAREWELLS AND WELCOMESIn June 2018, Lesia Szwaluk announced her retirement from the position of Executive Director of the Shevchenko Foundation.

In taking the position 18 years ago, Lesia brought her invaluable experience of working as Acting Executive Director of both the Shevchenko Foundation and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the organizational skills of her experiences as Executive Director of the YM/YWCA of Winnipeg – North Branch, and her knowledge of the Ukrainian community through her affiliation with multiple Ukrainian Canadian organizations.

With these skills, Lesia helped turn the Shevchenko Foundation into a professionally-administered agency and respected national philanthropic body. She developed policies and procedures for the management and administration of the Foundation, partnering with the Board of Directors in strategizing new opportunities, and making the office of the Shevchenko Foundation open and accessible to all. She managed the establishment of some of the Foundation’s most important and exciting initiatives, including the Kobzar™ Book Award and the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund.

In gratitude for her immeasurable contribution to the growth of the Foundation the Board of Directors has established the Lesia Szwaluk Volunteer Leadership Award Designated Fund in support of outstanding young adults volunteering in the Ukrainian Canadian community.

As it bid farewell to Lesia Szwaluk, the Shevchenko Foundation welcomesd Bohdana Bashuk as the Foundation’s new Executive Director, effective July 1, 2019.

Bohdana brings over 15 years of senior experience in the not-for-profit sector in the areas of culture and heritage. She is noted for her work in both television and radio broadcasting, and has worked in the areas of culture and heritage, serving in senior management at Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre, Winnipeg. In 2013 she joined the Shevchenko Foundation management team.

New Leadership in the Investment CommitteeThe Shevchenko Foundation Board of Directors also announces the appointment of Dave Chucko, FCA as the new Chair of the Shevchenko Foundation Investment Committee, who replaces retiring Chair, Wally Shoemay, CPA, CA.

Dave brings a wealth of experience as Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, and in the field of business and wealth services. He volunteers on various committees within the Vancouver area, and has been a member of the Foundation’s Investment Committee since 2010.

The Board of Directors, Investment Committee and Staff express their deepest gratitude to Wally for his 25 years of dedicated service as Chair of the Investment Committee. Wally played a founding role in the creation of the Committee, and was instrumental in managing the growth and diversification of the Foundation’s portfolio. As a senior advisor to the Board of Directors and staff, he worked diligently on the affairs of the investment portfolio, and provided invaluable investment advice.

The last quarter of the Shevchenko Foundation’s fiscal year was considerably positive for investment returns, as markets bounced back from a lacklustre twelve months resulting in a return of 8% with the portfolio currently standing at $39.5 million. A major catalyst for the turnaround was the shift to a “lower rates for longer” stance from many of the world’s central banks. However, many risk indicators have not disappeared, such as US-China trade talks and Brexit. The end of the year was a reminder that a portfolio grounded in diversification and resilience is a prudent approach over the long term.

Prudence and resilience have been hallmarks of the investing approach of the Shevchenko Foundation over my 25-year tenure as Chair of the Investment Committee. I am grateful to have worked with people of vision and professionalism, who focused always on the goal of providing the Shevchenko Foundation with solid and reliable investment advice with the purpose of supporting and advancing the Ukrainian Canadian community.

As I retire from my position, I express my heartfelt gratitude to members of the Investment Committee, the Board of Directors and staff for their dedication and assistance.

Y A L E N K A D A N C E R S E N R I C H M E N T T O U R T O U K R A I N E The Yalenka Dancers Enrichment tour to Ukraine in August 2018 aimed to further the growth and development of our dance school, enhance our knowledge of Ukrainian dance and promote stronger connections between our Canadian and Ukrainian roots. The tour exceeded our goals and expectations and proved a truly unforgettable experience for our dancers.

Our dance school was a very active participant in the four-day International Ukrainian Culture and Dance Festival held in Lviv, August 10-13. During the festival we performed in an open stage Rynok Square, at the Shevchenkivsky Hai Museum, and at the final Gala Performance.

We also shared a wonderful cross-cultural experience with the historic Vasyl Stefanyk school in Kolomyia which specialises in Ukrainian fine art and dance. The children from both schools performed a joint concert with dancing and singing, followed by a tour of the school and a luncheon for all participants. The genuine interest and interaction between similarly-aged Ukrainian children and youth from two separate countries was truly magical.

The tour instilled a deep passion and pride in Ukrainian dance and culture in our youth. This wonderful experience would not have been possible without the assistance provided by the Shevchenko Foundation, and others.-YALENKA UKRAINIAN DANCERS SOCIETY

K A T E R Y N A K H A R T O V AI would like to thank The Shevchenko Foundation for supporting me in my pursuit of a higher education at The Glenn Gould School of Music, which has provided me a truly unique opportunity in vocal training, stage experience and networking with other great vocalist and coaches from across the country. I had a chance to sing two main roles in the fall and spring opera projects at the conservatory – Eleonore in Bohuslav Martinu’s mini opera ‘The Tears of The Knife’ and a full role as Pamina in ‘The Magic Flute’ by W.A Mozart performed at Koerner Hall.

In addition to the valuable opera experience, I gained additional experience performing via several public masterclasses.

I truly appreciate your generosity and commitment to the development of aspiring artists in the Ukrainian community and beyond. -KATERYNA KHARTOVA

L E S I A M A R U S C H A K Project MARIA (previously called ERASURE) memorializes the millions of victims of the 1932-33 famine in Soviet Ukraine – an event widely thought to be genocidal. This work is part of a growing conversation about the visual memory of history and the role of artists in narrating these intimate stories which often raise complex issues relating to human rights and social justice. The Shevchenko Foundation’s support has contributed to the project’s breath and depth, allowing Ms Maruschak to provide diverse entry points, including two books, installations, textile sculptures, performance, lectures and film.

In 2019,Ms Maruschak collaborated with recognized international memory museums, lectured at international conferences such as FORMAT 19 University of Derby (2019) and Why Remember? Sarajevo (2019) on Project MARIA. Project MARIA received the Director’s Choice Award at Santa Fe Center, Grand Prix Award at Kyiv Arsenal Book Festival and was shortlisted for the Prix du livre at Rencontres d’Arles and the Athens Photo Festival.

The first large-scale exhibition of Project MARIA will be at the Turchin Visual Arts Center, 2020 (Boone, North Carolina).

These achievements are only possible in community. An artist creates, and it is with others that mountains can be moved. The Shevchenko Foundation does exactly that. -LESIA MARUSCHAK

M E G A N R O B I N S O NI’m so thrilled to have been selected for the bursary for my Language Program in Ukraine in the amount of $2000. I would like to thank you for the generosity and support of the Foundation and its supporters that makes this award possible.

Your contribution has made it possible for me to complete 4 courses related to Ukrainian Culture and Language towards my Bachelor of Arts degree in Central and East European Studies at the University of Manitoba. Your support allowed me to be educated on the history of Ukraine and about its current political and economic situation.

This experience has allowed me to understand traditions and history that I am now inspired to uncover and preserve.

This award is truly valuable not only in furthering my academic studies and in contributing to my personal development, but as well, in allowing me to contribute back to the Ukrainian community by spreading my knowledge and findings from the courses and being part of the economic and political solution in Ukraine.

Thank you for your commitment to supporting students like me who are studying Ukrainian topics and investing in the preservation of history, culture and language. Please accept my grateful thanks and deepest appreciation.- MEGAN ROBINSON

H O L O D O M O R M E M O R I A L T O R O N T OMemorials are an essential part of our national landscape. They serve as import markers for events and people who make up the diverse fabric of our nation. Even in the age of internet, we need tangible reminders of our political and social heritage.

Holodomor Memorial Toronto is a parkette of 1½ acres within the grounds of Toronto’s Exhibition Place. It has been designed as a space for reflection and acknowledgement of the extreme inhumanity and tragic events that have occurred in the past, and unites contemporary citizens of all ethnic backgrounds in the spirit of mutual empathy for past sufferings, affirming of the value of every individual human life.

The unveiling of this Holodomor Memorial took place on October 21st, 2018 in the presence of over 4,000 people.

“Пам’ятати і знати про жахливу трагедію Голодомору — мало. Її потрібно носити у душі, у серці. I не тому ми маємо пам’ятати про це, бо так треба, бо воно колись було, а тому що — це наша історія, наша правда, наш шлях, який нам довелось пройти.”

E D M O N T O N H E R I T A G E F E S T I V A L 2 0 1 8This year’s Edmonton Heritage Festival marked the 43rd Anniversary of our community representing the Ukrainian culture in Edmonton. Over 345,000 visitors attended the Festival and thousands of attendees visited the Ukraine Pavilion where they were able to taste traditional Ukrainian foods, enjoy a variety of performances and learn about the rich Ukrainian culture and history.

The Ukraine Pavilion has a number of highlights to report on regarding this year’s festival. Firstly, the Arts and Culture pavilion won 1st prize for its display. This year’s main feature included a special Ukrainian Easter, Christmas and Korovay bread display. It also displayed the rich tradition of Easter and Christmas. Ukraine was one of 70 different pavilions represented and took the lead in representing our culture.

On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Edmonton Branch, we would like to thank you for your generous contribution of $5,000 to the Ukraine Pavilion, Edmonton Heritage Festival.

T H E W O R L D R E M E M B E R S"The participation of Ukraine in The World Remembers WWI commemoration was only possible through the support of the Shevchenko Foundation. Their financial assistance meant that important archival work could be done so that the names of Ukrainian soldiers killed in the final year of WWI, would appear along with the soldier's names from fifteen other participating nations. The World Remembers commemoration of the names, including those from Ukraine, appeared in a national display in Ottawa and at more than one hundred schools, libraries, universities and museums in Canada, the US and the EU. The Foundation's support ensured that the WWI history of Ukrainians, both within Canada and in Ukraine was told through The World Remembers displays. We were also pleased to include photos of WWI Ukrainian soldiers and nurses on Canada's National Arts Centre's Kipnes Lantern, which again would not have been possible without the Foundation's contribution. We thank them for a fruitful collaboration in 2018. - R H THOMSON

M I TA C S G LO B A L I N K – A N I N T E R N A T I O N A L I N I T I A T I V E In 2018, based on a partnership with Mitacs, a national not-for-profit research and training organization, and as a component of the newly established Shevchenko Foundation Future Leaders Fund, the Shevchenko Foundation launched the Ukrainian component of the Mitacs Global Link Internship program.

The program saw undergraduate student interns from Ukraine, and mostly from the scientific disciplines, participate in research projects under the supervision of Canadian university faculty.

In 2018, 50 students from Ukraine studied at universities across Canada. Reports from supervising Canadian faculty were overwhelmingly positive and highly complimentary of the Ukrainian interns. The level of satisfaction with the program expressed by the Ukrainian interns was also extremely high, with most willing to enthusiastically recommend the program to their peers at home.

Part of the experience offered to the Ukrainian interns is to become better acquainted with Ukrainian Canadian community life. To that end, the Shevchenko Foundation coordinated community contacts for the interns, which gave them the opportunity to visit community summer events and institutions.

In various cities across Canada, including Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton, Shevchenko Foundation coordinated public lectures for the

interns where some were able to highlight their research projects. The Foundation expresses sincere thanks to various local and Provincial branches of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Canada, the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union as well as many individuals and organizations across Canada who assisted in helping the interns gain a better appreciation of the life of our hromada.

It is expected that for the summer of 2019, close to 80 top-ranked students from Ukraine will participate in this 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty at post secondary institutions located across the country. Students are provided with professional skills training and gain valuable knowledge about Canadian industry and innovation.

For the past 18 years Mitacs has designed and delivered research and training programs, working with 60 Canadian universities, private firms and governments to build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada.

The Shevchenko Foundation acknowledges the financial generosity of the Myhal Family Foundation, the Western NIS Enterprise Fund, and the support of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine in making this project possible.

A group of 2018 Mitacs interns visit the Library of Parliament in Ottawa.

Before coming to Canada to take up their internships, Mitacs participants went through a voluntary “boot camp” orientation that helped them prepare for their stay in Canada.

T H E E N D OW M E N T CO U N C I L’S WO R KOn behalf of the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF), I am pleased to present an overview of completed and ongoing WW1 internment grant projects.

Over this last fiscal year (2018-2019), the award-winning documentary, That Never Happened, created by Ryan Boyko of Armistice Films, was digitally released on various Canadian and US platforms along with an educational version, exposing the true story of Canada's First National Internment Operations.

The Endowment Council held a total of four formal meetings of the Endowment Council via conference call and one face-to-face meeting. As a result of these consultations, 22 grants were approved, totaling $879,610.

Since the inception of the CFWWIRF, the Endowment Council has awarded $3,692,680 in grants and has approved another $803,894 for disbursement over the next two fiscal years of 2019-2021. The approved grants have funded various projects, including: historical exhibits, presentations, commemorative plaques/statues, internee cemeteries, films, historical research, artistic endeavors, symposiums, and educational resources, among others.

The Endowment Council is continuing with the strategic direction of Legacy initiatives that include working with Museums across Canada to create permanent WW1 internment exhibits and providing researchers and students with over 12,000 newspaper articles from the time on the internment website digital map, which includes Armistice Films, The Camps video series. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (National) also rereleased this webseries on Facebook.

The immediate priority of the Council is to complete its work of providing new headstones for all 107 internees who died while incarcerated as well as creating an online platform with documentation which identifies the 8,579 interned during Canada’s first national internment operations.

Emil Yereniuk, Chair Endowment Council of the CFWWIRF

OUR ANNUAL CAMPAIGNSOur direct mail campaigns allow us to connect with our donors and to provide a small gift of appreciation to our friends. Your financial donation to the Foundation through these campaigns is vital to our survival and operation.

Our Christmas Card and Shevchenko Month campaigns also benefit our community of visual artists. Twice-yearly they are invited to submit original works of art based on their visualization of the Ukrainian Christmas experience, or their interpretation of a selected poem written by Taras Shevchenko. And twice-yearly two artists have their work selected and published, and appreciated in thousands of homes across Canada.

Over 30 established and promising visual artists have had their works published in this way by the Shevchenko Foundation.

A N N U A L R E P O R TThe Annual Report is published and distributed in early fall of each year to inform our donors and other interested people of our activities. Besides a report on the financial performance of the Shevchenko Foundation, it is a comprehensive and visual account of the grants allocated during the fiscal year, and the many individuals and organizations who have received them.

C H R I S T M A S C A R D SDuring the Christmas season, the Shevchenko Foundation mails Christmas cards to each of our donors for their personal use. This gift from the Foundation is our way of expressing appreciation and good will to our supporters. The image is selected annually from submitted works by Ukrainian Canadian artists, and the cards have become an anticipated and welcomed tradition in homes across Canada.

S H E V C H E N K O M O N T HEvery March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of our namesake, Ukraine’s greatest poet and patriarch - Taras Shevchenko. We do this by distributing over 30,000 bookmarks to children and youth enrolled in Ukrainian language classes, Ukrainian Bilingual schools, Ukrainian dance schools, and youth groups across Canada. Now it its 17th year, this souvenir art reproduction has become a collector’s item for many.

CHRISTINA KUDRYK

Christina Kudryk is a Toronto based artist. She studied and received her BFA at the University of Manitoba, and BEd at the University of Toronto. Her works

are based on her involvement and interest in colour, ancient symbols, ideas, as well as emotional expression.

She has participated in over 70 group shows, and has had eight solo exhibitions. Her most recent solo exhibition, and her first retrospective, took place in 2012 at the Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, Ukraine. She is primarily a painter, but continues her interest in graphic design, and has also explored and exhibited sculpture and photography.

Her works are found in public, corporate and private collections in both North America as well as Europe.

OLYA TKACHENKOToronto artist Olya Tkachenko was born in Ukraine. Her father, a professional artist, was her first art mentor.

In 2014 Olya and her family moved to Canada, where she worked at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Saskatchewan and led a private art school. Olya’s works have been exhibited in Ukraine, France, and Canada. Since 2008 Olya worked as a freelance children’s illustrator and created a number of children books in the USA, Canada, and Russia.

Olya graduated from the School of Fine Arts studying classic drawing, painting, sculpture, and history of arts. She works with various media such as oil, soft pastel, watercolors, batik etc. Her hot batik works combine traditional Ukrainian technique of pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) with modern concepts.

І ДOСI СНИТЬСЯ... I STILL DREAM…. I still dream: beneath a hillAmong the willows by the waterStands a whitewashed cottage.Even now, it seems,A gray old man sits beside the housePlaying with his nice,His curly little grandchild.I still dreamThat the happy, laughing motherGives the child and grampsA kiss, three happy kisses even,Takes the child in her arms,Feeds, and carries it to bed….

T RYZ U B AWA R D S G A LAOn May 8, 2019 at a Gala event held at the Ontario Art Gallery in Toronto, the inaugural Tryzub Awards celebrated the accomplishments and impacts of individuals, who achieved outstanding successes in their work in support of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Canadian community, and Canada at large.

Spearheaded by a dedicated group of passionate Ukrainian Canadians, in partnership with the Shevchenko Foundation, the Tryzub Awards were conceived to celebrate outstanding individual contributions to the Ukrainian community.

Canadian and international journalist, author and activist Diane Francis received the Friend of Ukraine Award for her extensive coverage of political affairs in Ukraine, as well as her work in the fields of technology, energy and business. In accepting her Award, Ms Francis spoke of the remarkable people she met in Ukraine, and of their courage to take risks, whether on the Maidan or in the fight against corruption. She congratulated the Diaspora for having done “so much good for Ukraine”.

Founder, President and CEO of First Generation Capital Inc. and philanthropist Ian Ihnatowycz received the Business Leadership Tryzub Award for his remarkable achievements as a leader in sustainable investing, and his service on the boards of numerous not-for-profit and professional organizations in the fields of health, culture, and business. Mr. Ihnatowycz spoke of his excitement to support the next generation of visionaries and leaders through his family’s foundation. It is through the generosity of the Ihnatowycz Family Foundation to the Shevchenko Foundation, that the REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts award was established in 2018.

James (Jim) Temerty and Louis Arcand Temerty were awarded the Tryzub Award for Community Leadership, having devoted their lives to family, business, and service to others through their entrepreneurial acumen and consummate philanthropy. A member of the Order of Canada, Mr. Temerty is chairman and largest shareholder of Northland Power Inc. and a member of many boards, including the Royal Ontario Museum Board of Governors. Mme Louis Temerty serves on many charitable organizations, including the Leacock Foundation and as cabinet member of the North York General Hospital’s various campaigns. James and Louise Temerty’s $5 million contribution to the Shevchenko Foundation created the Temerty Family Foundation Community Development Fund, which supports projects dedicated to the promotion and advancement of Canada’s Ukrainian Community. Mr. Temerty acknowledged the leadership of the Shevchenko Foundation within Canada’s Ukrainian community.

Speaking on behalf of the Shevchenko Foundation Board of Directors, President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. congratulated the winners, and thanked the architects of the Tryzub Awards Gala - Rayla and George Myhal for their insight and dedication. He also spoke of the great generosity afforded the Shevchenko Foundation, to its partnership initiatives, and the trust given to its leadership and stewardship within Canada’s Ukrainian community.

The proceeds from the Tryzub Awards Gala are allocated to the creation of an endowment fund for community development, and for the activities of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association of Toronto.

The Shevchenko Foundation is grateful to the initiators of the Tryzub Awards Gala, Rayla and George Myhal, for their vision in bringing the Awards to life, and to the members of executive and organizing committees Orest Sklierenko, William Petruck, Yvan Baker, Adrianna Grod, Marc Marzotto and Roma Dubczak, as well as the Foundation’s own Lesia Szwaluk and Donna Korade for their work.

R E A C H M E N T O R S H I P / R E S I D E N C Y F O R T H E A R T SWe believe the artist’s job is to reach. Reach for the moon, reach for the stars and the clouds. Reach for the horizon, the future. Reach out to those around you, reach back to those that came before you or to those coming after you. Reach deeper, further into yourself and your own abilities. Reach your destination or reach your goals. Reach for that which is out of reach. Reach for the truth…- IAN IHNATOWYCZ AND MARTA WITER FOR THE SHEVCHENKO FOUNDATION

On September 13, 2018 at Super Wonder Gallery, Toronto, the Shevchenko Foundation, in partnership with the Ihnatowycz Family Foundation, launched the REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts Program, designed to call on emerging Canadian artists to reach their career dreams by seeking opportunities for mentorship, residency, internship, training, workshop and research.

The 2018-2019 competition attracted 26 applicants, who met the requirements of being 40 years of age or younger; having a connection to Ukrainian heritage through background, art, culture and/or language (with no requirement to be Ukrainian Canadian); and working actively within the Ukrainian arts community in Canada and/or worldwide.

Emerging Canadian theatre artist Andrew Kushnir of Toronto received $21,000 from the inaugural awarding of the REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts Program for a self-created development residency with Tarragon Theatre in support of his proposed new play, The Time Piece.

The REACH adjudication panel included opera and theatre director Brian Deedrick; stage director, producer and librettist/writer Gordon Gordey; and artist, curator and instructor Larisa Sembaliuk-Cheladyn.

The Shevchenko Foundation extends its gratitude to the Ihnatowycz Family Foundation for their vision and unwavering support of the arts.

and centralize your support for all of the Ukrainian Canadian community organizations and programs that are meaningful to you. We make giving easier than ever with options to meet individual needs. These include wills and bequests, living bequests, cash or property, life insurance policies and designated funds. Both immediate gifts and deferred gifts offer you significant tax benefits and the

opportunity to realize your philanthropic goals and leave a legacy that will endure for generations.

A GIFT TODAYA LIVING GIFT HAS AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT

CanadaHelps and ChangeIt.

A GIFT TOMORROWA D E F E R R E D G I F T I S A T I M E L E S S L E G ACY

By making a deferred gift, you can incur significant tax advantages for your estate while leaving a lasting legacy.

Deferred gifts can be given in several ways: as bequests, life insurance policies, RRSPs, RRIFs, pension plans. You are encouraged to remember that as your deferred gift will be

your final gift, it should appropriately reflect your appreciation for and sense of gratitude

to your community.

• Ensure a strong and viable future for the Ukrainian community in Canada

• Ensure our community organizations have resources they can rely on

• Give back to the community that contributed to your sense of pride in your culture and heritage

• Repay support you received in the past

• Enrich lives by supporting programs and projects in our communities

Give a gift you can be proud of! Your gift will be invested in perpetuity and the annual income earned will be

distributed to causes in accordance with the Foundation’s grants policy. Over the long term, your gift will provide much more financial support to these causes than the original value of your gift. A gift to the Shevchenko

Foundation keeps on giving.
