Link in de kabel

Hello, Im David Loyen and I work for the organisation Link in de Kabel here in Leuven. Today I will try to tell you something about how we at Link in de Kabel use media and media creation to create chances for underserved children and youngsters.

Since English is not my first language, as you may have noticed, it feels a bit weird to not speak flemish here. I promise you I will do my very best to keep the allo allo-level as low as possible1

As some of you might know Im replacing Katie Bacon who could not make it to Leuven today due to circomstances. So Im feeling a bit like the Axl Rose of Apestaartjaren. I hope not too much of you will ask for a refund now you have to look at and listen to me instead of Katie.

Anyway, its a great pleasure to be able to speak here today and be a part of this amazing event. For the internationals I hope you had a good week! I guess its almost over know and you had lots an lots of inormation to process. Sorry again but Im going to give you some more to think about

First of all I would like to explain what Link in de Kabel is. For the international contenders: there is a dutch proverb een kink in de kabel wich means literary something like a knot in a cabel but is used to describe that there is some kind of trouble or problem.Started in 2001, 15 years ago, when a few organisations of the leuven area who are working with underserved children and youngsters were confronted with the phenomenon of a booming growth of the internet and everything related. Decided that they had to do something about the digital divide that was clearly becoming visible in their daily work. A second problem was that youthworkers of that era were seldom very ict-minded. So there were 2 problems: decent computers and connection to the internet and secondly a lack of knowledge amongst youthworkers. Solutions 1: ict-professionals volunteered 2hand pcs online helpdesk Solution 2: opening of a learning cent/media lab 3. coaching and 4 train-the-trainer sessionsNowadays: 3 pilars + tools (diginatives, sorrybox, get real, Hit the City, ))At our medialab play work learnCreative- - fun -- chances3

There are media and there are media mediaand theres also underserved and underserved

What is media? FB-post, photograph, instagram, sculpture, ?The wordmediacomes from theLatinpluralofmedium. The traditional view is that when referring to different forms of new media, and in the sense the material or form used by an artist:there were great efforts made by themediasof the involved countriesabout 600 works in allgenresandmediasweresubmittedforreview.(the media)[TREATED AS SINGULAR OR PLURAL]The main means of masscommunication(broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet) regarded collectively:theirdemandswerepublicizedby the mediaUnderserved. Less chances than they should have. Economical, educational, social. Practical and material issues. But there is also a group of more privileged youngsters negative view on media at homeDigital skills are no garantuee for social inclusion and the lack of digital skills isnt by default a reason for social exclusion. We can expect that insight of how to use digital skills for their own profit are the key to turn them into an strategic advantage for social inclusion.5

media creation the ultimate step in e-inclusion?

Creating media is often considered as an ultimate step in e-inclusion. Allow me to have some dougghts about that. Its nog because you can create publish an find an audience for your media that it means that you using it ina a way that could be in your own profit. The firtst example is from a singer in a band aimeing at kids who put ted an almost naked selfie on instagram and caused a meida riot. The second example is of a 115 year old girl that is posting clips about beauty an related stuff on het youtube channel twice a week. She has become one of the ten most viewed youtubers in Belgium wtith that so I can imagine that there is a kind of profit in that when she goes looking for a job in the future.6

Why media creation works?

Appealing: eat, breath media. In the results of the apestaartjaren survey we can see that almost everey youngsters has a smartphone an is constantly online. On and offline life arent diffrent thiongs the look at movies like directors and read new like journalists so by using media creating your going to the core of their daily life.

When working with youngsters with less language skills or newcomers media can break true those bariers. And of course meia can be a language on its own.

Results . Its much more rewarding to spen an afternoon and go home having published a movie on youtube than to spend it in a room listening to someone tellin gyou wath you should know.

Most important: its fun. The possibilities are almost endless and knowadays even when using only freeware you can get decent resulst were one can be proud of.7

Creating chances by creating media

Skills: using media gives you operational skills . Not only ict-relaterd but also on looking at stuff listening to music and understanding how media works

Self esteem: in the process of creating meida (for example a videoclip) youngsters start to explore and develop talents. Creating a result that they can show to others. Be proud of something and maybe most important are taken seriaouylsy

Interaction: in group with an audience with a neighboorhood or environment.

Opportunities: attention press other peoaple see their tealnte positive experience usefull in later life9

A few words of advice

Set some limits so things are clear. Provide accomodation materials and then let go of your expaectations and let them decide wich way to go

Result are important in a sense that they are something t reach out to butr mthe process of making is much more importan

Not too big groups aatention for everey person and their skills - learn from eachother an d as a worker learn from them

Make mistatkes encourage solutions

Explore talents word image music even cooking

Dont botter them with to much explanation keep the theory limited to the absolute necessary

Extra tip: be genuine be yourself dont try to imitate them.10
